I rented an Avis car in Palm Springs Memorial Day weekend. The car's a/c was intolerable in the sweltering 105 degree weather. They told me I had to switch the car out myself because the only way they would travel to me to switch the car out is if it broke down. I asked them if they thought that poor a/c in the desert wasn't a good reason to come to me to switch the car, and the manager at the Palm Springs airport told me that the car had to be un-driveable. She told me I could take the car to the Palm Desert Avis and make the switch, but the salesperson at the Palm Desert Avis told me that I had to return it to the airport because she didn't want to have to service the car. If you think I am the only one having a problem with Avis, google reviews and consumer rip-offs of Avis. Then google their competitors.
Avis does not charge for one way drop off. If you need to pick up a car in one city but need to drop in another city there is no drop off charge. Other agency like enterprise will charge a $100 drop off fee. Site is easy to navigate cancelation is easy if necessary with full refund. Excellent pleasant staff
We had to switch airports, Clearwater to Orlando. Avis said they didn't have ANY cars in Orlando... since we pre-paid, there are no refunds, so we lost the entire amount, over $500. We went through the Avis lot on our way to our car with another company, and imagine my surprise when the Avis lot had more cars than anyone else! Shady, Shady, Shady. I guess they had more cars because most already knew what I just learned... stay away from Avis.
If you rent a car in a foreign country and there is some problem, you are at a disadvantage to resolve it with either local companies or even some US based car rental agencies.
In my experience Avis is the only one where the US management can correct mistakes made by a foreign office.
One common "mistake" is the Avis office in Italy or Brazil will not honor a reservation you made on the Avis website, or want to insist you add on "insurance" or other items.
If you rent from Alamo or Enterprise abroad and you see fake charges added on (commonly unwanted insurance) the home office claims it can do nothing as that office is independently owned.
In my experience you pay Avis almost exactly what the reservation states without hidden charges.
Hi - I used Avis for a recent Euro trip for 3 days through Germany, France and Lux. All was fine and car was normal. Only really annoying thing is I asked if they had a GPS in the car and they said yes, but then didn't tell me the cost of the charge.
When I got my bill this was included, this was a nasty surprise. They need to be very specific about costs of add-ons.
I've only had excellent experiences when I've rented cars from Avis while on vacation and when I went to Conventions.
Even got a couple of nice upgrades at no additional cost.
Most of you still prefer Uber, but I like to drive myself because I do a lot of self-talk. Avis does free delivery and pickup from my location.
Why do sites promise "best price guarantee" when they make it so hard to claim the difference between the price you booked for and the price you found later. The T&C's are so complex that I have found twice that I didn't qualify. For $30 or $40, it just isn't worth the hassle. But that's a lot of bad will - so I get vouchers for car hire instead and save $$$$$ over the avis price. They lose because they have to pay a commission and I win. Their problem. If they actually kept their word and made it easy to claim a price differential, I'd only ever go direct.
I used this company in the tropics hands down best selection of cars. Tip... use a credit card with auto insurance and decline their paid insurance. Saves money..
We've rented cars plenty of times, and was pleased with the service quality. Although there are usually cheaper options at small local rent-a-car companies, I prefer bigger chains like Avis. You know, rental cars sometimes brake - people who rent it unfortunatelly don't care it well all the times, and in case of any troubles Avis was very helpfull. But of course, the prices can be better...
Hello Friends of SiteJabber,
This will be my first review at SiteJabber, apparently a good site in itself. So let me share my story about Avis.com:
I made a car rental reservation with Avis.com Rent-a-car. I needed the my rental car one day earlier. So I called Avis up (1800-) at their local office in 435 Channel Islands Blvd. In Oxnard, CA. I would not have been able to get a rental a day earlier (today) if somebody just hadn't pulled in front of the store. I assume this is because the Avis branch on 435 Channel Islands Blvd is small and only has a limited number of cars available.
Disaster loomed when I was trying to find the local rental office. The address given by Orbits and verified through Google Maps -- 435 Channel Islands Blvd, Oxnard CA -- did not exist. Unfortunately, I discovered this when it was too late as namely when I was driving around at Channel Islands Blvd. After realizing the address mistake, I called the local Avis office to inquire about the correct location. The branch's agent on the phone explained to hang up and call the number again to obtain directions. So I did and when connected again I ended up talking to the corporate hotline who could only give me the address again (the same wrong one) and naturally having no local knowledge of the branch's location. Now I also realized the intent behind that agent's surprising request to hang up and call the same number again. It was 5:55 PM and the branch closed at 6 PM. The local agent wanted to go home and not being bother by my request. The agent also didn't wanted my business presumably anticipating having to work a bit after store hours to provide me with my requested car rental.
Bottom line: Very bad customer service by that local Avis agent in Oxnard, CA.
Answer: They don't answer their phone. If you want to contact the office, you have to go directly to the office and wait in line.
Answer: On June, 24,2020, I arrived at sky harbor airport rented a vehicle from Payless or Budget. Upon arrival, there was a long waiting period. The associate told me he would give me a better car for the same price as the initial rental I reserved. Also, he stated I could pay 40 dollars to receive the advantage of bringing the car back on empty if I chose. Two weeks later when I come to extend my rental I found out Avis was overcharging me and had to get the price adjusted. Later I called the 1800 number to extend my rental from July 24 to August 24th in which Avis did do. On August 24th, I called to extend my rental for two months. However, the associate said I could only extend for 1 month (August 24th -September 24th). So, I submitted for another month. The associate told me she submitted it. So I was under the understanding that my rental had been extended. On September 17th, I received a text message as well as a phone call stating that I needed to return the vehicle because it was critically past due. If not returned, the police will be notified of the care being stolen. I'm a travel Crisis nurse; I had to leave work and drive 35 mins to get to the Avis/budget location in Chandler. On the way to Avis, I called the 1800 number again. The associates were saying my submission was "improperly put in" by the associate. I asked why would I need to bring the vehicle back. Can you guys just charge my card on file for the month I initially requested? The associate said no and I had to return the car. The associate at the Chandler, AZ location was very nonchalant. I explained the situation above and he stated the people I spoke to on the 1800 number were not the boss. They cannot extend my rental. I should have called an actual location. I was explaining to him that they already extended it for me once. Thus, they can extend the rental. Also, the automated system has an option to extend your rental. So, I was not understanding why the information he was providing and the system was contraindicating. I asked him to refund my money for the charges and fees placed because this whole situation was an AVIS error not mine. He said he could not adjust any charges on my account. I would have to go back to the location, my contract originated. Then, I drove to the Sky Harbor Airport and the associates there was very calm and truly tried to explain everything. However, the manager stated that he could not adjust any charges and fees and that I would have to call corporate to get a refund. Also, he said I would have to return the car officially. Then, the corporate associates will be able to look at my account. I officially returned the vehicle. While in the Avis location at Sky Harbor, I called the 1800 number again. I explained the situation, and the associate stated my account was being investigated. I asked to speak with someone who can refund my money that day, because Avis charged my card on file right at 3,000 dollars. My usual rental charges was 1,000-1060 per month. I had the car three weeks and three days past August 24. The associate told me there was a 24-48hr period before refund would be given because they had to look at the account. I continued to ask for a refund today. He consistently said no basically. He hung up on me. I called back and spoke with someone different and went through the same process except I found out I couldn't even get another rental for Avis or Budget because I was placed on a DO-NOT-RENT LIST. I explained that I needed to return to work and needed to rent another car. He said he would suggest going to another company until this is cleared. I asked to speak with the manager and the manager said the same thing. I was beyond frustrated. I went to the other companies at the airport and all of them were sold out of cars. So, I was STUCK AT THE AIRPORT WITH NO CAR AND NO WAY TO GET BACK TO WORK. I called the 1800 number again to see if I can speak with someone above the floor supervisor, and I was told I could not. The floor supervisor stated to me that he could not give me the number. I explained my disbelief and disappointment in Avis for how poorly they had treated me. Everybody was very nonchalant. So, I had to catch an uber to my hotel and research locations to get a vehicle. I was CARLESS until Sunday. My experience with AVIS was the ABSOLUTE WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE. AVIS FAILED ME AND DID NOT DELIVER ON THEIR PROMISES. Do to the lack of empathy or concern for its customer, I was STRANDED AT THE AIRPORT UNTIL 4PM( 6HOURS)! PLUS, MY WAGES WAS DEDUCTED BECAUSE I COULD NOT RETURN BACK TO WORK. AVIS did a poor job of correcting the mistake made on their part. This was the WORST RENTAL EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE. AVIS/BUDGET IS UNTRUSTWORTHY.
