Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

AirBnB claims that they will reimburse hosts for damage done by guests. However, in three years I have only submitted one claim, with documentation, and in four months it has not been paid. The customer service department cannot even see the claim documentation or handling, and says that the claims department will contact me, but they do not. I am at least 12 calls in, and several discussions with supervisors, but they have no information or authority and I may as well talk to a potted plant. If I did not have so many positive guest reviews, I would change companies. If anyone is starting as a host, I suggest using a different service.
I booked a reservation which went smoothly. Then was requested to pay more for my pet as I expected. I tried many times to pay the pet fee, but the payment would not go through online. I contacted an Airbnb rep who tried for over an hour to help me get the payment made but couldn't unless I gave the User I.D. and password to my checking account. I refused on that one. So this overseas rep said I was being referred to a specialist. While holding for the specialist I was hung up on. I felt there was no other choice but to cancel the reservation yet they kept almost half the money I paid for the reservation. Now have found out that even their extenuating circumstances will not allow me to collect the full refund when this happened through no fault of my own. Their extenuating circumstances provision covers almost nothing that will ever happen to a person but many circumstances most people will experience through no fault of their own yet get little or no refund whatsoever. They should be put out of business.
The reservations system is misleading. I had reservations for about 15 days at a condo. I could change the end date with a 1 day penalty up until the last day of stay. I then extended my reservations to about 32 days total and did not see the cancelation policy had changed.
Now if i change the end day i get NO refund on remaining days. However I could have created a new reservation for same condo and received same cancelation policy as my original. This is misleading by Airbnb and makes no sense. When I extended my stay I didn't see the policy changed and i get no refund if I change the end date. I find this misleading and don't understand why... especially given how I could have just created an independent reservation.
Recently stayed at an Airbnb property in Sicily and it was NOTHING like the images on the Airbnbs site. Torn sheets, construction site outside, thinnest bath towels, dirty, tired looking, broken sofa lounge etc etc
Airbnb needs to have more accountability on the properties that they list and not go by what the host posts up. They need to follow up on these properties to make sure they are up to scratch. I am sure they can afford to employ the staff to do this!
Visit Portland OR, Terrible service, First Time and last time
=================================
First time try this, the huge AC compressor attached to the bedroom, and AC does not stop full night and outside temperature is only 64F at night;
Message host to tell situation, she could not stop AC, the AC noise level is 70 db above, room freezing, the cold air from ceiling vent hiss towards beds make things even worse. Cellphone no signal without knowing before checked in, need to work a week here.
Unbearable noise roars whole night, can not sleep, have to request to cancel rest and escape rest. I am sure AirBnB agent knew this, still rent this out. She does not care about people, simply make big effort to steal as much as money from me, charged me 3 days fee for 10 hour stay regardless the room is not suitable for sleep and live.
What a shame!
First time AirBnB, last AirBnB, a scam, looter company.
I booked my room in Romania using my credit card. I was charged $500 swiftly and sent a confirmation code. When I showed up at the property, the owner refused to let me in. She couldn't speak any English and I couldn't speak any Romanian. Long story short, I had to spend the night in the street, cold, hungry and helpless. All hotels in the town were fully booked due to a christien event. It was risky as well because I had cash, laptops, cameras, cell phones etc. in my backpack. Romania is not the safest place in Europe. I called Airbnb for help but the lady refused to help me because I was calling from a Romanian phone number that she couldn't verify, or she just didn't want to help. Ten days later, I called again for a refund at least as I only had one credit card that worked in Romania. This time I was told to wait for another 15 days for a full refund. I don't know if Airbnb is really worth it when there are so many other options. For me, this was the first and the last time to book with Airbnb. Please don't put yourselves in precarious situations like me, go to professional hotels instead (I'm not saying that they are perfect).
The host of a recent trip I had scheduled suggested that I cancel for a refund when I asked what my cancellation options were, and when I canceled at Rob Host of Hollywood's suggestion, we did not receive the refund. Customer support protected the host and had no policies that support the guests' experience, nor gave the option to rate the host with my experience. They agreed that the host should have refunded, as it was his suggestion that we do so, but claimed that now that the host is in possession of the money, they were unable to refund. When we asked to be able to have the refund and rate the host, they discontinued the support option.

Bad reviews and lies on Airbnb siding host
I had a very bad experience with a host in Aldgate, London and reported the abusive and bullying behavior of the superhost to Airbnb customer service. The host posted false information about their listing and cost me additional cost to store luggage at the end of my stay. When asked further, the superhost refused to admit fault and started using abusive language towards me in his messages. The host was also spreading lies in his review to me and in his reply to my review. I even have documentations of photos and receipts to prove his lies. When Airbnb customer service was contacted, they did not remove his untruthful comment and instead said that spreading lies on another person's wall is in accordance to their policy and they can't do anythi g about it. They sided with the abusive host and closed our case without any action taken eg, take down lies and strip the superhost status. Airbnb reviews by other customers were also not accurate as everyone is afraid that they will in turn get a bad rating by the host. Much prefer booking.com or book hotels. Will never use Airbnb again. Where all their policies sides the landlord or host.
Airbnb is a Clown Show! They delete reviews warning of violence, insults, discrimination, theft and financial scams to continue profiting from clueless users. They manipulate prices (up to $200 in many cases) and track your behavior to extort more. When a host scams you, Airbnb ignores everything for days, even if you take the case to the local police. They refuse to delete insults by hosts. They have a racial bias. I have reported 5 hosts to the police and Airbnb awarded 4 of them. Multiple women have also been raped in Airbnb accomodations because many Airbnb hosts are psychopaths and Airbnb does nothing about it despite the many warnings. They keep these women silent by paying them, which is just another form of raping them once again. It is abuse after abuse after abuse... Why is nobody suing this company to the ground or at the very least expelling the CEO?
Booking was a complete nightmare. Certain amenities listed in contract will not be accessible during our stay, such as beach access from property. We specifically paid for this location because it's beachfront with direct access on a NO DRIVE beach. Asked for fair compensation for this HUGE inconvenience. We were offered $34 out of our total paid, $842 for 2 nights. Remember, Can't access beach from property! We're told to drive down to a public access location! Our concerns and disappointments have been constantly dismissed and gas lighted. We are so upset at how our trip turned out and how Airbnb and the property handled our issues. Make sure you read the fine print on BOTH contracts (airbnb and property) before you commit to any contract. Ask any and all questions prior to payment and have them put it in writing. This will be a valuable lesson learned for us. Never again.
I attempted my first stay last night in an airbnb and it was a total bait and switch.
Misleading description. The property is in a ruff looking neighborhood with run down houses. "Farm" house is misleading when they show it with nothing but green grass as if it is outside city limits and in a rural area, it's not. The house had construction materials on the outside and the area generally looked ruff, with unkept lawns, homes in disrepair, etc... I was even mean mugged by a guy that looked like he was just out of prison, standing just outside the slum apartment across the street. The property was surrounded by run down homes & apartments. I did not even bother to check in.
Suspiciously they had no bad review. I saw that mostly woman stayed there or have had their reviews left online and what a shame, those woman are putting themselves in harms way and the "supposed" husband/wife/baby hosts are letting this happen, probably because they cant sell the house for what they paid, if they are even a real couple.
https://airhostacademy.com/remove-airbnb-reviews/ Its right there. They can be removed and even encourage it.
We booked a 30 day rental with Airbnb and showed up a day before to check the place out. The building was empty and there were signs all over the property saying the place had been fumigated the day before. We changed our mind about staying there because of our dog and because I have long term respiration issues and didn't want to get sick. We contacted Airbnb and they said the host would have to approve the cancelation which he did not. We tried to dispute the charge with the bank but Airbnb ended up taking all the money, over $2500 dollars! We didn't stay a night in the unit and the host knew it. This is outrageous in my mind. We had other problems with other stays but the owners were always understanding and we got our money back but obviously this fella wanted our money. I understand Airbnb had to take care of their hosts but explained our situation to numerous customer service reps and thought they would work with us but no. We tried to communicate with the host but he didn't return any communication until the time was up for us to cancel. A lot of hosts are very responsive but this guy was not, and Airbnb kept telling us what a great host he was. Sorry, not!
So it isn't there policies I have a problem with but rather the way they handled everything. So I opened an account with airbnb and went looking for a place to stay for my pending concert the next night. Found a place for for my fiance, me and our fur babies. Went to checkout and it asked for info such as phone number, text the person running the airbnb and a credit card. Did all that and it hung up and wouldn't process when I tried to check out. Saw I had an email and went to it telling me it needed the info again but this time it wanted a picture of a drivers license. I gave them the picture and went looking for the place I wanted to rent again.
This is where things get unprofessional. I got booted out of my account 2 times telling me I had logged out. Went to log back in the 2nd time and it told me my account was locked and I would need to go to airbnb website to review it with them. No explanation or understanding of what was going on. I then get a email from airbnb telling me I can go and slappeal my account being locked through a link. I still at thus point have no idea what is going on. I went to appeal and they asked me what was my reason for appealing and once again not saying anything about why I'm locked but rather they can't tell me in that section why I'm locked out but wants me to tell them why I shouldn't be locked out. Still had no clue till I went back to my email and saw there was another email and it stated that I had a criminal background from 30 years ago and they wouldn't allow me to rent from them. Website states they only go back 14 years and that they take into account rehabilitation and being a productive member of society. Well long story short they should make all this transparent when you sign up and waste everyone's time.
Place is not as described. Complete lie. Definitely not safe and secure as listed. Bio hazard materials, construction during the night and loud music during.
The host shared there is no parking thus requested a refund but he refused and Airbnb wasted my time that night
Airbnb my foot I will never book a place with them, instead go to a lodging or some small time hotel, these people are crazy I could be killed and they were happy with that.
I was awake the whole night guarding myself from attack.
My host was great and the place was even better that I rented. I had unfortunate circumstances and had to cancel my reservation. Airbnb took an extra 1,300 out of my account after I have already paid for the entire month in advance. Per the host, the money didn't even go to him. Airbnb took it. Well, Airbnb was shady with it and said I needed the "ok" from the host to receive it back. Even after he agreed, support told me he didn't agree and therefore I would not see my money. Thankfully the host was very determined to get my refund for me and was talking with support for the whole day. Be cautious if you need to cancel. They'll try taking your money!
Airbnb kept my money, even though Hurricane Ian cancelled my event and flight! Once I was informed (2) days before my event, I contacted my Host about rescheduling,. I was told, I couldn't reschedule or would be given a refund. To contact Airbnb!
I contacted Airbnb, who told me to Contact the Host! I informed them I had and sent them a screenshot of the cancellations in regard to my trip. Airbnb Extenuating Circumstances Policy, says Natural disasters SUPERCEDES the host! Yet they still decided NOT to honor their own policy! Not letting me know how the decision was determined. This deciding to just STEAL my money
This Airbnb at 6204 beechwood avenue, sarasota FL hosted by Kayla does not care about their renters.
We had rented for Oct 8 - 15th and the hurricane hit. She had earlier promised she would accept cancellation if the hurricane came. Well, it came and she had some damage to the property, so we asked for a cancellation or rebook. The dates we wanted to rebook she said were taken. So we asked for a full refund. She would not refund us our 100%. Luckily I was in the 7 day to get at least 50% back. Why would we come to FL right now? Can't go to many things. Not much open, food stores, gas stations, restaurants, beaches, etc. Not sure if she was even honest that she had power.
DO NOT rent from this person under Airbnb!
Thank you
If the host ask to refund your money because you write a bad review don't accept it. Airbnb uses that against you to remove the bad review. Do not trust all of the reviews because if the host knows this loop hole you don't really know if it's good or bad. Never again will I use airbnb.
My wife and I were forced to evacuate the Tampa area due to a mandatory evacuation order. My wife booked in Atlanta, but after talking with several friends, we leared that travel back from Georgia after a storm can cause massive delays (12-24 hours) with several people running out of gas on the highways. This could be deadly for our infant, so we cancelled our booking after talking with the owner and rebooked in a safer area of Florida. The owner of the unit refunded us all but the first night, which was reasonable, but AirBnB kept their entire fee as per their "partial cancellation policy". The customer service agent was rude and when I asked to speak to her supervisor, she said "sure, but she is going to say the same thing". We have been longtime customers and will gladly take our business elsewhere in the future.
Our stay was filthy and unacceptable despite being proactive and sending a message prior to our arrival listing our concerns. We were assured everything would be perfect when we arrived. Every single room was dirty, had stains, dust, and bugs present. We spent thousands for the week and there wasn't even toilet paper stocked or a garbage can to throw away thing away for the entire stay -besides a tiny can located in a bathroom. The wifi didn't work after day 3. We had to supply the entire place with toilet paper and paper towels. There was not a real response from airbnb and they ignored all our messages once it was clear we were not happy. Airbnb - their own policy states they are "against physical intrusions" but they were totally fine with check my guest saying "they sent over someone to clean everything and we should be ok with that". Sending some stranger to our place unannounced isn't ever safe. In fact it is against airbnb policy. Airbnb and Check my guest made us feel unsafe from day 1 because we never knew if anyone was coming or would just let themselves in. Unacceptable. Our stay was unsafe and im angry that airbnb isn't responding. There was only 1 key for the apartment for 12 people. Not very convenient. Zero stars. Not a safe place to deal with.
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
