The company has garnered a predominantly negative reputation, with numerous customers expressing frustration over inadequate customer service and unresolved refund issues. Common complaints include misleading pricing, unexpected charges at pickup, and a lack of accountability when problems arise. Many reviewers felt deceived by promotions that did not translate into actual benefits, leading to perceptions of false advertising. While there are occasional mentions of successful rentals, the overall sentiment indicates a significant distrust in the company's practices, suggesting a pressing need for improved transparency and responsiveness to customer concerns.

Website offers extra insurance which I bought thinking I was covered. I am sure the fine print totally exonerates the company, but I do not have time to read all the tiny print in legaleze. When it came time to try to collect - guess what - no coverage! Not surprised. Too bad because it does not take much to make a crummy company like this into a consumer friendly company that brings back customers due to their good service and product. I won't be back too many other good companies out there.
I bought insurance for the car from this site, but when I got to the rental car company they said that no insurance was paid for. Won't ever rent a car through this website again.
Rented a car for 4 days from Geneva Europcar, cost me almost £1000, they charged me twice then lied about everything, Rentalcars.com are s useless bunch of tossers, will never use again
I have been renting through The Rentalcars.com website several times per year for about 3 years now and have been very pleased with the prices I have paid. For example, when British Airways / Avis wanted £700+ for a 7 seater Dodge Grand Caravan in San Diego, Rentalcars got it for me for £250.
However, I am prompted to write due to two positive experiences with their Customer Service. Last December I had booked a car an Innsbruck airport through rental cars. The night before travelling to Innsbruck I printed out the paperwork and found the particular rental company would not accept American Express. I phoned Rentalcars and they managed to change my booking to another company that accepted American Express and were cheaper than the original one!
In May I booked a car for a week at St John's airport in New Foundland, Canada. Unfortunately, I accidentally forgot to pack my driving licence. I rang Rentalcars from Canada but they were unable to help me get a car without my licence. They told me to ring their customer services when I got home. I did this and within two weeks they obtained a full refund of £250 for me from the car rental company.
I do not take the extra insurance they offer because, being a regular traveller, I pay about £80 per year for an online insurance that covers all the rip-off excesses charged by car rental companies.
I have used rentalcars.com before in europe and have had an overall positive experience. However, their North and South American Services has been terrible.
Chile-2016. Rental car company offices were closed upon scheduled arrival. 10:00am on a Sunday, and were not scheduled to open for three days... If I had know this during my booking I would have looked elsewhere.
Mexico-2016. Visa's CDW (Collision Damage Waiver/Basic insurance) was not accepted by rental car company. Instead, to rent the car for a week the company Firefly would charge us $638/week for insurance... Beyond ludicrous pricing... For this price, we asked to see the car first. We were led to a nearly empty parking lot with one car remaining. The sales person said he was surprised how busy they were and that eh only had one car left (ours from our prepaid reservation). The car looks like it had driven through the trenches in World War I... Scratched, dented, dinged, and any extruding appendages the car had initially had been ripped off as it most evidently had been birthed through a cinder block wall... good heavens... the imagery of that prose...
Needless to say i will not be renting with RentalCars.Com in North or South America.
Terrible business practices! I reserved a one way rental from Houston to New Orleans. I reserved the car for 29 hours and have confirmation email from rentalcars.com stating my car is reserved with Dollar Rent A Car for those hours. The cost with all taxes and fees was $76.
When I arrived at Dollar for pick up, they showed that rentalcars.com made the reservation for only 5 hours. Not even enough time to get to my destination at lightning speed. They said my cost would be $115 to keep it overnight versus $76. I was stuck at the counter so I agreed and was told I needed to take it up with rentalcars.com.
Rentalcars.com was no help and refuses to admit they were wrong. They said that I agreed to the extra charges for the extra hours at the counter. There should have never been extra hours if they made the correct reservation with Dollar. I have all the evidence and rentalcars.com refuses to make this right. It is a terrible company. Reserve your travel plans elsewhere.
So rented a car from RentalCars. Flight cancelled, the next delayed so picked up a day late. Talked to RentalCars via Skype and they were fantastic, no problems, cancelled first and then rebooked.
However when I picked up the car at Malaga, the people there didn't know what I was talking about, then found my booking but still charged me, not much but some, for 'administration', I also took their insurance deal. So all in all £164 for 9 days, £123 of that for insurance. Not bad but still not sure how this is supposed to work.
Due to the fact our flight to Munich was delayed as we spent a few hours stuck on the tarmac at Nurenberg after being redirected because of a bad storm, our car was no longer available on arrival at Munich and we had to pay for a very expensive upgrade, despite having paid in full prior to departure.
I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole in future.

Hired from rentalcars advised to have the full coverage insurance which I did
Then told by the company I collected the car from as it wasn't their cover it was invalid.
Hired the car Full to Full. Returned the car Full, nobody to return the car to just a letterbox. On arrival home, charged to refill the car. Luckily took photo to prove it was full.
Getting nowhere trying to get a refund. They're not interested why would they be they've already had your money.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY ULESS YOU WANT TO BE RIPPED OFF
They charged me twice and refused to return one payment back.
Rental Cars is nothing short of outward deception using its platform to fleece clients who choose to rent cars. Better to go with a bigger rental company in future!
I booked a Toyota AYGO car at Nollegiare Sardinia and I returned it in perfect condition at the airport but outside of opening hours and therefore there was no contradictory report. Two days later I received a bill of 120 for a scraper on a plastic hubcutter that is worth only 25.
No proof of the scratch: you are sent a picture with a 1 cm scraper on a hubcap but nothing proves that it is the car you rent.
Please do not book at Nollegiare: it's a scam!
They already charged my debit card, but since i did not have a credit card i could not pick up the car. Tried to cancel booking on web, but could not. Called them on Skype and they refused to refund me.
They ruined our days in Milan. We found a good deal on the website. So we took it and we paid by debit card on line. Once at the Gold Car desk, they didn't give us the car. The reason it's because they accept only Visa Credit or Mastercard, not the debit card, american express or maestro card. (This is not clearly specified on rentalcars website)
So we had to call the website and in order to have a car they charged us three times the amount we paid in advance. Also the new company we booked with, Local Auto, made us waiting for two hours at the airport.
So if you wanna rent a car, avoid Rentalcars.com and its cheap deals, they'll literally ruin your holiday!
Had a horrible experience with this company. A debit card was charged on May 12th 2017 for $140.41 for a rental car in San Juan rented via Dollar rent acar. Upon returning the vehicle another credit card was used to settle the bill. Therefore the company got paid twice. Bank statement were requested, although is was presented the company refuses to honor a requested refund. Please, Please people do not do any online or otherwise business with this company. They are not reputable, this company is running a fraud scheme.
During the booking they scare you into taking out full coverage insurance. Then, once the booking is finalised, you get a notification via email saying that your rental car company may still charge you a $2,000 deposit to collect the car! Which they did as they don't recognise the insurance by Rentalcars.com Even worse, if something goes wrong, you then have to pay for everything up front and then claim back from Rentalcars! And there is no domestic phone number available to call to even discuss anything!
They will cheat you anyway possible. Just don't use you will end up paying way more than the teaser cheap price advertised.
I booked and pre-paid for a Citroen C4 (I realise that class of vehicle not the specific vehicle) through rentalcar.com. When I turned up at the Budget desk in Fuerteventura and after a 40 minute wait in the queue, I was advised that they didn't have any cars left at all apart from a Citroen C1, the smallest class of car. Given that there was no alternative available I agreed to take it and was told that the cost would be readjusted to compensate - I assumed downwards. Four suitcases didn't fit into the C1 and the drive to and from the airport to the hotel involved my daughter and wife sitting in the car with a suitcase each on their knee. Not ideal.
On receiving the invoice from Budget on my return, I noticed that I had been charge additional money and on enquiring with Budget Customer Service was told that the car that I was given was a higher class than a C4 because it was automatic and that was what I had been charged for! I didn't need, book or even want an automatic. I took the car as it was the only one available. Because Budget were unable to provide me with the car that I booked. And yet I have been charged additional money for the inability of Budget to honour my reservation.
Customer Services told me in no uncertain terms that that was the situation. Hard luck! Not good. Avoid. I won't be using RentalCars.CON ever again.
Found it difficult to get a refund from the company when I cancelled a trip with several weeks notice
First of all, we were given a terrible car... smelly, full of scratches on the outside and stains on the seats, and very unbalanced wheels. The steering wheel shook like crazy on the motorway. The GPS was so old that it didn't contain updated motorways and roads. We did not know where we were going for a while...
We had made the reservation to include a different drop-off location on our way back. We drove around the Pisa Airport for about 45 minutes, looking for the Ecovia drop-off location. We asked various staff there working for the rent-a-car companies and no one had ever heard of Ecovia. We NEARLY missed our flight back to Denmark because of this incident. Finally, we called the local Ecovia number. Hearing my desperation over the phone, they calmly agreed they would pick up the car at the airport. And we had full insurance. However, they later charged us a penalty fee of 60 euros since they "hadn't been able to find the car" and it had been in "an insecure area" (whereas we had parked it in monitored parking garage and had clearly told them over the phone).
After our trip, suddenly 200 euros-worth of extra charges appeared on my credit card bill. First of all, for the above-mentioned 60 euros penalty. Then, another invoice included a charge for the different drop-off location (which we had already booked in our original reservation) and an overpriced GPS rental of about 30 euros. (and, again, old and not updated with new roads).
When I tried to dispute all of this with a representative at Rentalcars.com. They said that they had "warned" of the different drop-off charge in a roll-over icon as I made my reservation. I NEVER did see that icon, nor was that extra fee ever included in my original reservation and payment. (although we had specified the different drop-off location).
I will never again use this shady company.
I submitted for a reservation, it came back "not able to process at this time" I hit refresh the car came back same pricing, i did not resubmit instead i checked my account saw that they took $66 for the collision insurance. Why would they charge for that but not supply the car rental that should go with it. I was told when I called. Which by the way they don't supply a number for cs and the number associated with the charge is a automated only number that says priceline is the actual parent company, we found a number it's UK base and with my email they found my charge. But told me I'd get a credit back 5-10 days. I asked for a sup. And was disconnected. Follow up with your bank to file a dispute, that's what I did... this is fishy and not professional of rentalcars.com BEWARE!
Answer: Good luck with that one, I'm in the same boat, I'm going to pass my situation on to the travel doctor at the Sunday Times.
