Poor service

We tried to change the pickup time on their website, it didn't work. We checked the depot open hours so we knew we would still make it on time. The depot closed before we arrived to get the car, even though they were supposed to be open, we had to hire elsewhere. Rentalcars.com where hard to get hold of, the complaint inquiry took weeks and they still chose NOT to refund me. They're also based in the UK, not ideal if your in NZ.

Terrible customer service, complete lack of human understanding or connection. Phone staff very unreasonable, chat staff slightly better but again none willing to further our dispute for valid refund.
One plus, we have learnt to always contact local rentals directly rather than go though secondary sites like this ever again.

BEWARE BOOKING THROUGH RENTALCARS.COM!

I booked a car for Liberia and prepaid. It gives you a voucher with which to collect a car. On the voucher it said what was included and that a vendor may charge extra for collision if you don't have it. I revied everything and prepared my Visa collision waiver.

When we arrived the vendor did indeed try to scam us for collision. It was a very bad company Keddy by Europcar! It was so bad that I had to video him, and when I did he covered his badge and kicked us out without giving us the prepaid car.

I called rentalcars.com and not only did they leave us stranded in Liberia, but when I complained they were reprimanding me for filming the criminal activity. They wouldn't compensate me for the booking difference or indeed my prepaid fee. I had to dispute with my credit card!

Watch out! The savings is not worth it!

BOOKED CAR HIRE THROUGH rentalcars.com. ADVERTISED AS NO DEPOSIT. COLLECTION FROM LIVERPOOL AIRPORT. CAR WAS NOT AT AIRPORT, WAS TAKEN BY A REP £ MILES OFF SITE TO A COMPANY WHO DEMANDED £2005 DEPOSIT. DISABLED MAN LEFT WITH NO CAR OR TRANSPORT 3 MILES FROM AIRPORT. rentalcars.com DECLINED MY OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO DO THE RIGHT THING AND REFUND MY MONEY. ASK THEM FIRST TO REFUND - RECORD OR SCREENSHOT REFUSAL TO DO SO - THEN GO TO YOUR BANK AND CLAIM GOODS NOT RECEIVED AND/OR MISSOLD. YOU CAN GET YOUR MONEY BACK THROUGH YOUR CARD ISSUER. BE WARNED PEOPLE.

Avoid them!

Don't use them, book directly with the rental company. Prices look great, but then your reservation gets cancelled without telling you (invalid confirmation number) and you end up either without a car or paying 3 times what you budgeted. Awful customer service as well, refused to help.

Total scam

I reserved and prepaid for a rental car with Thrifty, through rental cars.com. When I arrived at the airport in the early evening (as scheduled), I was told that my driver's license was no good. It needed to be an "international driver's license", because "we have no agreement with the US for driver licenses, according to the Geneva Convention". Has anyone ever heard anything so stupid? Next day, the excuse was my credit card. When I got home and complained, I was told that I had signed the terms and conditions, and would not be getting anything back.
Terms and conditions are: pay up, but don't get anything in return!
Do not rent from these people!

Due to cancelled fights and making connections from Italy to the US, I returned the rental car one day earlier than the period for which I had already paid up front (an expensive three-week rental with "trip insurance")
The provider, Sicily By Car said "no problem, you will be refunded for one day". That didn't happen; after the trip, Rentalcars.com Customer Service refused to honor the verbal promise to refund.
When I appealed to Rentalcars.com, they said the refund was "denied". In addition, the 3-week rental was overpriced to begin with.
I used them in the past with few problems; I'll never use them again.
People, read the reviews—-bad customer service. Do not get scammed.

Initially my experience we good, booking the car was easy enough, but as soon as I ran into issues, forget it! The company I booked a car with would not rent to me because they wouldn't accept my credit card. So, here I was stranded at the airport having paid for a car but with no ride. I had to rent a vehicle from another company at the airport last minute. Again, I tried to cancel before my scheduled pick-up but was repeatedly, and conveniently for them, redirected. It was relayed to me in a live chat (text message essentially), because I STILL haven't spoken to a real person, that I would have to wait until my trip ended to file a claim. When the initial rental period was over, I filed a claim only to be told that they would not refund me. The company they partnered with refused to rent to me and yet they were going to keep my hard-earned money, not to mention the fact that I still had to rent a car. I told them that was unacceptable and they finally, three weeks later, have provided a partial refund but they still kept $88 as a cancellation fee. After all the headache and hassle I paid more than I would have if I had booked directly. Just save yourself the hassle and DO NOT USE RENTALCARS.COM. YOU are not their priority and neither is getting you a rental car. Side note: my voucher stated that there would be no cancellation fees if the booking was cancelled before the scheduled pick-up time. Just make sure their site is working when you plan on cancelling!

This company is to be avoided if you want to rent a car. Youvbook and pay, than they cancel. Not reliable. They take the money and you have to wait until you get it back. Avoiddddd.

I landed at Toronto Airport YYZ and I gave my flight information to rentalcars.com (which is completely useless! Because they don't care about anything). I paid upfront the entire amount. What I didn't realize was that the time the plane lands and the time the rental place closes is the same. So the pick up time of your car is the same as the landing time, which is funny. They take your money and thats it. Worst website ever! Be warned everyone. After I reached out to them they told me it's in the terms and conditions to arrange afterhours pickup. The rental place wasn't the best either. Routes car rental has the worst service. Nobody from anywhere called me about this issue. Now they just took my money and that's it. I tried to call them but obviously they were closed when I landed in toronto. I'm just thankful it wasn't a lot of money but be warned. Next time try to get a hold of the rental place and if they are not picking up then that's a sign of bad service. Sometimes, the rental place itself has better prices than these 3rd party booking websites.

I had to take my car in unexpectedly for maintenance for 3 days and needed a rental car. I submitted my request online and drove approximately 40 miles to the airport to pick it up as there was nothing available to rent within 50 miles of where I lived. When I arrived there to pick up my car I was told that since I lived within the state I was renting and had no airline ticket I was able to rent the car. I tried calling RentalCars 3 times, and after waiting on hold, all 3 times I was told "I'm sorry, we have a bad connection, can you please call back?" Finally, I used their chat feature which took about 45 minutes, I indicated that I needed to cancel my reservation as the rental car company would not rent to me as I was an in-state resident, so I needed an airline ticket in order to do so. They told me to hold on so they could contact the rental car company to find out why I couldn't rent the car (they didn't even know the policies on rentals). When they finally got back to me they indicated that I would be charged for the first day because I cancelled the reservation after the fact and they may be able to credit me the second day. I said I wanted full credit as I was at the car rental in time, but it took about 45 minutes to get in touch with RentalCars. They said, "sorry, this is our policy" without even listening to a word I said. Needless to say, I filed a dispute with my credit card company for false representation,

Rental Cars customer service seem quite happy to lie about the facts of the rental. I assume they think they can make the complaints process so tortuous and long winded that customers give up. Even after the Sixt branch manager has clearly taken responsibility for the cancelled booking and clearly refuted 'no show' reason Rental Cars erroneously gave for not giving me a refund. I have been fighting this issue since the 9/9/21, the night of the deeply unpleasant encounter at Sixt. Rental Cars rather than helping their customer have done nothing but lie and prevaricate.

Terrible company

Use service in catania, sicily, could not garantee deposit as only carried my debit card which they did not accept, did not accept my wife credit card either, different name, third party renter offer to rebook for 350 euro extra, decided to rent with europcar, next counter. Lost every thing except the third party insurance which i am still waiting to get, terrible experience
And very dishonest set up. One of my colleague has the same misfortune by booking with credit cart, but only carried his debit card while travelling, same issue...

This Company is a SCAM

This company is a scam, better not to book through them. We lost alot of money dealing with them. We arrived at the airport in Italy to pick up our car, turns out they cancelled the booking and they made us pay for a cancellation fee. They took 3 days payment even though they had given our car to someone else.

Car Given Away

Our bus was running late, and when we finally reached the airport to get the car, it had been given away due to some fine print. So, we had spent extra money to get to the airport, only to arrive to pickup a fully pre-paid car which had been given to another person. The only remaining options were hundreds of euros more for those days. The guy at the Hertz counter was on his phone when we arrived and told us to wait, and finally about 10 minutes later he was done texting and called us over. They didn't honor the pricing we had for a car and give us another for the same cost like would have happened in the USA. Rather we were told we could wait for a couple of hours to see if a car became available. Instead we went to Avis/Budget and rented another car.

The guy at Hertz told us to contact rentalcars.com for a refund. Upon contacting the rental cars customer service, they say "I am limited to my resources to do such things like cancel or refund on the transaction, however what we can do here is to file a claim, on that part I'll be needing your help as you will be needing file it on your end..." So, we will see if the runaround game stops and we get a refund.

Advice: Use the rental car company directly, not rentalcars.com

I had a booking through rentalcars.com for a car in Cagliari airport.
Unfortunately the original flight that I booked had been cancelled, so I had to book a flight with another company, which will have arrived to the airport later. I tried to call europcar in Sardinia to let them know, but all operators were busy so couldn't get through, and left a voice message, as automatic reply was suggesting to do, to let them know.
Well I have arrived at the rentalcar, and the office was closed, at 7:15pm, in an airport. I asked informations at another rental car office, and they advise they closed at 6:30pm. Considering all other rental offices were open, I was a bit in shock. I called than the rentalcars.com number, but for a technical issue I couldn't get through.
I called rentalcars.com the morning after, and they told me is my fault I didn't show up for my reservation ( please note as well, they ask your details when booking, including the flight number, which was correct, so they knew I was going to be late), and I need to pay £400. The most ridiculuous situation I have ever found myself in, they ruined my holidays.

Do not deal with this company, it is impossible to contact once you make a reservation. If you want to cancel within the 48 hour of pickup, as they advertise you can do for a full refund, you will be unable to reach them! If you question my recommendation look at reviews on BBB and other sites. STAY AWAY from RENTALCARS.COM! Note they get approval ratings o 1 star because a star rating is required to post a review, it would get a 0 if it was possible.

Some friends and I were going to rent a car in Europe. We found one through rentalcars.com in the south of France and went to go pick it up. Because of COVID, the expiration date of my driver's license had been extended by the State that I am from. They didn't accept it, however. We then tried to get the name on the booking changed to one of my friends (all of whom had valid licenses). But rentalcars didn't budge. The only option that they advised was to pay for the original car (200 euros) a cancellation fee (150 euros) and a new car (250 euros) if we wanted to get a car that day (total: 600 euros). Even though we all had licenses! So absurd. Stay away.
