I needed to sign-on to ID.me because it is utilized by my professional State Board. When the option became available with Social Security I was really pleased because time was saved in creating yet another log It believe this is a trustworthy site, although I am one of the skeptics as to all electronic systems. They are supposed to be foolproof but in reality they get hacked. In my mind, ID.me is likely no less secure than any of the others. However it is super easy to use.
You cannot speak to anyone if you have an issue. It's all AI. In the past I've been completely ignored by the AI, saying that it would work on the issue and never hearing from them. The issue got fixed, but I was never told why the issue existed. The AI took a week to finally get back to me, and there were no updates during the interim. I had just assumed that they were ignoring me again. If you can avoid dealing with this company, avoid it, unless you enjoy frustration, in which case you'll get plenty.
After several long sessions I finally got the validation to enter the Social Security agency I needed to contact. It was not easy to navigate on my iPad. I needed other devices to finish the whole process.
