HomeAdvisor (Powered by Angi) Reviews Summary

The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

My experience with home advisor was not good. They sent a decorator Rita Lyons, and she did not do anything. Her rate was 150 /hour. She came the first time and measured some of the rooms, she did not come back for a month. She was supposed to come back she never did. When we finally got in touch with her, she said she sent us a letter, which we think she was lying, cos we never received it. So then we maid an appointment with her again, giving her the benefit of the doubt. So she showed up for the second time and she had nothing for us. Then she started taking pictures of the rooms, which she said she forgot to do the first time. So she walked around the house, looked again and talk for awhile, and I was anxious to hear what she had in her mind for us to decorate our apartment, but again she had nothing. She charged us another 150 and left. Now I am thinking she is not doing a good job, but I figured I will talk to and let her know what's going on next time I see her., I will give her benefit of a doubt again. Then again she didn't show up on a day we agreed on and we called two times, she didn't respond to this day. The last day we spoke was a month ago as of today. And here we are, with our apartment undecorated, 300$ from my budget and nothing done. We started this process a month before the holidays and here, we going into the summer, apartment still not decorated, but our time was wasted and 300 $ short.

HomeAdvisor was horrible. They were quick to sign me up for their service and take my money. The leads that I got were out of my service area. When I called my acnt mgr 5-6x, I got no response from my vmails. I emailed the acnt mgr and also cust. Support, and got no response. Finally called cust. Support to cancel service and they were unwilling to refund my money saying they could only give me credits. I want my money back. It's their fault and they won't own up to it.

Poor lead generation
January 20, 2017

Got calls pleading with me to sign up as a kitchen and bath remodeler. Was too busy at the time to deal with it, but reluctantly signed up for "less" than normal. In less than 2 months received 31 leads. Could not make contact with half of them, had 2 hang up on me, 2 said the project was already scheduled, 2 changed their mind, and 1 said the project was complete. My average response time was 2 days due to going live the week of Thanksgiving when I was rushing to finish projects and then out of town. Now I see reviews from customers claiming to be called 2 years after posting their project, starts to make sense.

Paid over a thousand dollars for crap leads and when I tried to cancel, they first blamed me for not calling the second the lead comes through, then argued that there is no guaranty, then claimed to be able to help me improve my rate, then threatened me when I said I was going to call my credit card.

I spent more time turned off trying to chase the crap leads than I did active. The last week I was signed up, I was charged over $360 for leads that could not make contact. They would not refund any of these and would not accept any offer of parting ways.

Buyer be ware.

HomeAdvisor Pro
September 28, 2016

To any one that has opened a new business, I have to say Home Advisor is a fruad. They con you into paying a membership fee, then there are fees for leads weather it turns into a job or not, your bank account still gets charged. Not to mention the hassle it is to cancel your membership with Home Advisor. Home Advisor is a scam. I did not receive any jobs from any of the leads they sent me, and hat was 11.

Waste of time
September 24, 2016

I have used this site for several projects and the contractors either never call you or they come and assess the job and never call you back. I literally have never hired anyone that I found on this site because they simply did not get back to me. Interestingly enough, all the contractors that I contacted had "five star" reviews. I would advise that you save your energy and look somewhere else for a contractor.

Total Scam!
August 25, 2016

They make up leads and send them to you to make money. 9 out of 10 times you get a lead, you call the lead, no answer, then after a while you send an email to the "gmail" or "yahoo" account, and never contact a human. One of the leads was named Joe Schmo as a joke I assume, and I caught it. I paid over $240 just last week in leads and made just $500 in the ones that panned out. So 500 minus 240, equals $260 for a weeks worth of hard work. BTW, Yodle is just as bad. Get some business cards and nice clothes, beat feet and meet the surrounding area you're working.

Bullies and thieves
June 13, 2016

Several recorded calls, text and e-mails were made to a Home Advisor representative throughout 2015 and 2016 after joining the program and each time apologies were made along with adjustments to my account taking off any charges. A couple of attempts were made to cancel as this has turned out to be an overall shady company. I took a loss for the first year to try Home Advisor as it sounded like a good idea. It is the definition of if it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't. They are not. I had many communications with them about leads coming in at 12:00 a. M or similarly odd times for most people. I resent getting charged for ridiculous leads. I spent many hours turning off the darn things it got to be ridiculous. I made my intentions known that I wanted to cancel each time someone contacted me to assure better future dealings and my value as a successful customer was important to them. I had a conversation with someone in March and he said my subscription was up in June, he could suspend my leads give me time to think and I would be notified BEFORE my renewal was due. I was not! While doing my bank statement I noticed the 300.00 renewal fees being charged to my account. I attempted to talk to someone. (Interesting this happened on a Friday afternoon and you have to wait till Monday), I finally talked to a person a bit ago got the run around and passed around. I asked frankly are you going to stop that payment. I was told No and that he was going to pass me to someone who would say the same thing. I informed him that I would be calling VISA and the bank, He then threatened me saying it I did it would go to a collection agency, but I should hold and talk to blah blah. I have made my intentions clear to cancel for almost a year. It didn't work for me let me out, why do they have to escalate it to this so people get angry and robbed from. Home Advisor is shady thief business.

Paid for work that was never finished. Roof patches on shingles, fell off. Made appts and never showed up, or never called back, Cancelled two times. This was for money already paid. Made me feel like I was an old Lady that was scamed. Also work that was done on driveway was done half assed, and not completely finished. As soon as I informed John that I could not afford any more work, he sure didn't finish or call anymore to finish. Paid over two. Close to three thousand dollars for work,

This service has turbo charged my business. They send me leads constantly. Of course you don't close every lead you get and of course not every lead is perfect for you. (They will refund the lead charge if it's totally off.) I'm closing probably around 20% of the leads they send me, which if you know anything about leads is a great rate. They put me in direct contact with people who are trying to get the exact service I offer. They have optimized their search presence which puts them high in the results of people searching for my services. Then through their page, the customer is questioned and directed to my company. The customer gets my contact info and I get theirs. Some times they even call me first. Otherwise, I'll call them within a few minutes of getting the lead. That quick connection to the customer is a huge help in creating a relationship and getting their confidence that you'll be attentive. For what they charge for a lead ($10 - $40) it's worth every penny. I've never been so busy. If you don't believe me, call me and ask.

I was looking for some contractors for my home remodel and I used the HomeAdvisor website, 3 times. First 2 referrals were great but the 3rd contact had the worst cust serv (actually "no service") imaginable. I wrote a negative review... which did not get posted. Wrote a 2nd review, which again, did not get posted. Makes me doubt the validity of this type of website. I feel it's still best to use referrals from friends/relatives. I gave it 3 stars because my overall experience has been, just okay; nothing I can rely on.

The mission of this Colorado firm is to stab you, not to help your small business. I got billed for instance $188.20 in one month, and $56 of that was for giving me ONE lead that I never even followed up on because I install home theaters, and never got a single person who wanted that, mostly repair my TV power supply when the Chinese made electronics fail or mount my TV to the wall because Best Buy charges more than I want. They say it's $17 per month but don't tell you about the $80 every three months and the scam with random $20 fees for leads that you have no notice you are going to be paying for.
Be aware this site I had for a full year and it cost me over a thousand dollars with only one small sale. DONT SIGN UP unless you have money to just burn or are in a BIG city AND in the DOWNTOWN area.

I went on HomeAdvisor website twice for two different searches. I found none of the referrals adequate, but to add salt to the wound, I am now pestered everyday, even Sundays at 7:30 am with solicitation calls. I plead with them to stop but they do not. I have used up all 12 of my "do not call" options to block some calls. Still it is not enough. Do NOT trust this website to respect your privacy.

Why waste time with a company that charges exuberant prices for low quality leads? I'm done with HA and moving on to MyProHome, which is a smaller company, but they are down to earth and actually care about both parties. For me leads have so far been in the $10-25 range.
