The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

I joined Home Advisor in am attempt to enhance my business. Within 5 days I was sent 9 leads. Of the 9 only 2 were legit. 3 were suspect and 4 were discovered to be out right fraudulent. When confronting Home advisor they refused to credit the account. I disputed all charges with the cc company and canceled the card to prevent further charges. Now they won't remove my business from their search engines. I have joined the class action lawsuit against them and highly recommend others do the same
If your given the right expectations and set up correctly you can see life changing ROI, at the end of the day it is up to the contractor to respond quickly and have the ability to sell your services. If you get 10 leads and only close 1 you still make money. Example; lets say you build decks. You pay roughly around $500 for the leads but you make back at least $3,000 back. That means for every $1 you gave HomeAdvisor your get $6 back. That's only closing one lead! Now lets say you do what most do and close around 3 out of the 10. That's $9,000 off of $500 which means you gave HomeAdvisor $1 to make $18 back... All you contractors should look inward for the lack of success you had with the program.
The "prescreened" contractor for a major rehab job took my initial deposit money and disappeared. I'm now out on $15k. DO NOT USE THIS SITE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE
Also nice touch that there is a bot that writes the same messages asking you to email them on the responses. I did that before writing the review but got no responses. These bastards are probably laughing their heads off on some carribean island making a killing selling your info to shady contractors.

In my opinion Home Adviser, formally Service Magic is a terrible company to do business with. When I signed up I was told that if a lead was invalid for some reason, like the potential customer couldn't be contacted or the lead was for a different service then my company provided, I could simply indicate this on the Service Magic internet portal and I would not have to pay for this bogus lead. LIES, LIES, LIES! It turned out that out of perhaps 20 leads that they charged me for there were only 2 legitimate leads. When I brought this to the attention of one of their customer relations people I was told that, basically, it didn't really matter if the leads were legit or not, I was expected to pay for them anyway. Really? My conclusion is that this company is both incompetent in producing the quality leads that were promised me, as well as unscrupulous in their business dealings. My advice to all contractors STAY AWAY FROM SERVICE MAGIC FAR, FAR AWAY!
UPDATE: Home Advisor has responded below to my review, in my opinion with ANOTHER LIE. They wrote... we are able to credit back for projects that you are not profiled for. Well, I don't doubt that they are ABLE to credit back for leads that my company was not profiled for, but the fact is that despite several phone calls to their "Customer Care" department, they refused to issue credits after the first couple of bad leads. Just one of the problems I had dealing with these guys, but obviously having to pay for obviously bad and inappropriate leads after being promised when I signed up for their service that I would not have to pay for bad leads is a pretty big negative. Like I originally said: Liars and Crooks.
Hi Kim, We're sorry to hear your feel this way, we do our best to provide our pros with tools and opportunities to help sell their business. While we have no control over if or when a customer answers their phone, we take this into account when pricing our leads and we are able to credit back for projects that you are not profiled for. There are a number of other situations we are able to issue credit for and we are always happy to discuss ways to help you see success with our service. To speak with a rep, please call Customer Care at 877-947-3639 or send your contact info to [email protected] and we will reach out. -HASupport
My experience with Home Advisor has been Horrible. I needed contractors experienced in roofing, siding and porch repair. I not only had "contractors" come to my house who stayed less than 5 minutes without walking around the entire house and then give me a price but one guy from Pretty Clean in New Jersey came by and smelled of marijuana. Another company American Dream of Newark, NJ came by and stayed for at least 1/2 hr. He gave me a glossy brochure and an estimate of $16,000. However, when I did a Google map search I found out that the company was actually a garage with the name of the company on it.
Hi Gayle, We're sorry to hear about your experience with these pros, we encourage them to present themselves in a professional manner. Was using Home Advisor and they kept sending us bad leads. We were also getting leads we didn't ask for. We spent more time calling them trying to get refunds and there customer service team told us there was nothing they could do. I immediately canceled our account and was told no more leads would be sent. They kept sending leads that we never called and 6 months later was sent a bill for almost a thousand dollars. I called them and they said that they had spoken to someone else at my company and was told we still wanted leads. I asked them who it was being that I am the owner and they couldn't give me an answer. I asked them to pull the recording of the conversations because they always tell you that the call is being recorded for quality. They told me that the do not recorded any calls! They then told me that I would have to pay or they would turn me over to a collection agency. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. WE SPEND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS A MONTH ON LEADS AND THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM!
Hi Justin, We're sorry to hear this, we are not a scam and take these matters very seriously. You would have continued to receive notification of each lead and there should be record of any conversations. Please send further information to [email protected] so we can locate your account and investigate this matter. -HASupport
Home Advisor is a Scam. They will promote any bad company.
Do Not Use This Company. It is a scam.
Also don't use MasterGuard pest control recommended by Home Advisor. I had an initial service on 6/19 and already had to take out three hornets nests.
Don't give them your credit card the day of (MasterGuard)!
I was charged full price and I think it was a total joke. I selected them for mouse removal and the tech inspected for about 5-10 minutes in my basement and less than 5 minutes outside.
I honestly also think the insect spray is a joke too.
Go with a real professional. I cancelled the day after my initial service.
Signing a contract for pest removal is a total scam and joke. I'm an idiot for doing it.
Hi Chris, We're sorry you feel this way, we are not a scam. Feel free to share your experience with this pro by writing a review here: http://www.homeadvisor.com/write-a-review/. You have not been honest from day 1. The sales person first told us that we could select the leads as we go. That is not true! Then we got told that we would get a credit that we could just go away. We got charged for the leads anyway. Then we called back in order to protest why we have not received our credit. Guess what? We were told that we will not receive the credit as promised because you were unable to. You lied again. This is not good. The service is terrible and we cannot trust you!
Hi Ricardo, We're sorry to hear this. While you are charged for the leads that come through, you do get to control the types of projects you're receiving leads for. We're happy to look further into this matter, please send your contact info to [email protected] to speak with a rep. -HASupport
Many hours wasted trying to get to the bottom of the several thousands of dollars our small family business was charged for just one week with home advisor. Under no circumstances would I recommend any contractor using this service to grow their business. They are criminals that sell you on a great business idea where you get to set the price you pay per month and then they deliver something entirely different. Leads that you are charged for are mostly fake and for us, they came in huge numbers. All around complete waste of energy, time and money. Please save yourself from this nightmare and go elsewhere to find customers.
Hi Amy, We're sorry you feel this way, we do our best to provide the opportunities and resources to help you sell your business. You can control the number of leads you receive per month and you're always welcome to discuss any lead concerns with us. We're happy to further address your concerns, please send your contact info to [email protected] to speak with a rep. -HASupport
I used Home Advisor to find a painter and a carpet installer. The whole purpose of using HA is to be able to read unbiased, truthful reviews. Well, I can tell you for a fact, Home Advisor does not want to post negative reviews.
I got lucky with the carpet people, but not so lucky with the painter. The painter had mostly great reviews on HA, but there were a couple of old negative reviews. Considering their age, I ignored the bad reviews and hired this clown. Big mistake. So, I wrote a review that reflecting my bad experience. It's been over 6 weeks now, and despite many conversations with HA, and promises that they have already made the review available, it's still sitting in a pending status.
Now, some might think that my bad review was sour grapes or something, but on another website I have since found other scathing reviews of the painter in question. Thus, HA doesn't seem to vet their contractors much, if at all.
My theory is that 1) HA does not post all the reviews it receives, and 2) it buries bad reviews by withholding them for awhile.
I'm very disappointed in HomeAdvisor certainly do not trust them to be honest.
I won't be using HomeAdvisor anymore, and I've told my realtor about this experience so she won't encourage people to use them. HA is a great idea - but lacks the honest and integrity to support it.
Hi Leticia, We're sorry you feel this way, we will absolutely post negative reviews and take your ability to rate our pros very seriously. We also vet our pros and you're more than welcome to find more info about that process here: http://www.homeadvisor.com/screening/. I wanted a reliable, honest contractor, Mitchell Custom Homes and Rentals was at the top of the list, after taking draws for product he never even ordered he stalled the progress on my house while he borrowed from Peter to pay Paul, unfortunately I was Peter. I am stuck for all the subcontractors and vendors he neglected to pay and my house will be tens of thousands more than promised. With the help of some kind and generous people who used to work for this crook, I am now the general contractor.

Had someone come out and give a bid on a sprinkler system, guy was over an hour late, and tries to claim his guys came by but no one answered. We were there, we have a doorbell video monitor, and once I told him that, his story changed. No one came by! Then it was he "gave his people the wrong address, but they did come by". Right. The address that I literally spelled out for him, twice. Why nobody called is beyond me... oh wait, "they don't have phones". An excuse/lie for everything.
Edited to add; I can't leave a review on Home Advisor because I didn't hire him, and he is not on any local sites or pages for me to review him anywhere else, wonder why... I do not think this is fair, I could understand if it was because his bid was too high, and I didn't agree, but this guy was just rude and all around unprofessional. There is much more to the story, but I'm not here to review the Pro. Also, after reading other reviews of Home Advisor (which I should have done in the first place) from this site and others, I see it's hard to leave a negative review even if the person was hired for the job, which absolutely makes sense to me now, considering all of the contractors had amazing reviews, yet this guy was FAR from a "Pro". I should have checked reviews elsewhere. Lesson learned.
Hi Amber, We're sorry to hear about your experience with this pro, this isn't the type of interaction we expect you to have. I was matched with ONLY 1 pro for my project, but there were others listed that the web site indicated MAY be able to help. I called one of them and they didn't even offer the service requested in my area. Not only did they not do garage doors, they didn't come to my neighborhood. I called the home adviser phone number and told the person that there was a mismatch in my results - hoping they would use the information to improve their website. The guy on the phone was rude and basically emphasized the word MAY as their disclaimer that those companies may or may not match. The guy did not even want to hear my story - kept trying to talk over me and basically raised his voice over the phone to emphasize his rudeness.
Don't use these guys - they suck.
Hi Dan, We're sorry to hear about your experience, we greatly appreciate your feedback and don't expect you to have this kind of interaction with our business. This type of situation should show pros that do the requested type of work but could be outside the area so we appreciate you bringing this to our attention as what you've described sounds a little different than that. I paid this jerk $800 to come treat my house for bed bugs. He has been here AT LEAST 7 times to re-treat my house since October 2016, and yet I STILL have bed bugs! Other companies say they should be gone in TWO WEEKS! Plus, he comes over, uses my electricity to do a heat treatment that HAS NOT WORKED! And, if all that isn't bad enough, he calls me honey, babe, sweety, etc., as well as aske me personal questions such as who I'm seeing, if we've fooled around yet, etc.?! He makes me and my roommate VERYYYY UNCOMFORTABLE! Anyway, I'll be contacting Home Advisor, in the hopes that they'll rectify the situation, cuz if not, the next step will be the Better Business Bureau, regarding BOTH the exterminator, as well as Home Advisor, for both of them ripping me off, and not getting the job done!
*** DO NOT EVER USE HOLT EXTERMINATOR, EVER!

We where with HomeAdvisor for many years and we felt that they we're sending fake leads, so we set them up and sure enough they where charging us for lead's that didn't exist. And we had been with them and they called and ask us to come back and as soon as they got $800 out of us they cacelled our account on the grounds that one of our many employees had been in a bt of trouble 25 years ago and they put a hold on our account, there fixen to be out of business, be careful, they will get you to, Brad with Patch Perfect Drywall and Repair Co

Terrible customer service. The contractors all seem to be lower quality/poor reputation outside of their own review system. Try to leave feedback and they make you jump through so many hoops if it is a negative review that I assume most people just give up leaving just the positive reviews. With that kind of system its no wonder everyone looks great but when they mess up your home good luck getting them to let your negative review go on their website.

I posted a negative review with a small bathroom remodelling company I hired and homeadvisor.com does not publish my negative review at all. I was basically trapped by it's 5 star reviews. It is just hard to believe all the positive reviews any more.

Mr. Lee Wilson from Greenville Clean Air Agency came to my rescue when i needed a mold specialist. He was VERY PROFESSIONAL and worked tirelessly in helping me get the necessary information to present to my landlady about the mold in my apartment. He explained every step thoroughly and completely which eliminated surprises. He also was reasonably priced. THANK YOU MR. WILSON!

You have no record of me, eh? What about complaint number ******* on your records!
How about 3 years of calling you and hours of explaining the $140,000.00 disaster from the referral you sent me! You make me laugh that you are "sorry". That's NOT TRUE! The only thing or " help" I got from you is a couple of calls to see if you could expedite a kitchen remodel that was now going past its 3 year mark! The so-called " great referral" STOLE a contractors license AND forged my initials on my checks made out to his company name, as he wrote it on his contract with us, so he could cash the checks for himself! Your customers NEED TO KNOW that you know ABSOLUTELY NOTHING about the people you refer. Whatever " background check" you do has NOTHING to do with the verification of the persons qualifications. All you're looking for is the money you get for every name you refer to your so-called " professionals". Did you really think someone wouldn't figure that out after an experience like this, then my continuing nightmare that you were aware of and you STILL refer this person! You have absolutely no pride in what you do. You're just greedy. Those are the facts. The file you have from this project, including pictures must be at least 2 inches thick. You did nothing but ADD TO MY AGGRAVATION!
After all the messages and emails I sent to you over a 3 year period where the response was no more than " you probably have to hire an attorney ". Well... after using Home Advisor WE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO USE AN ATTORNEY.
Your company is a disgrace. It is also apparent that many others have experienced a nightmare after using your referrals. Don't take my word for it... read them yourself!
Hi Judy, We're sorry you feel this way, we're here to help but we cannot with the current amount of information we have. In your original review you stated you spoke with someone which is how we knew this, however, we have no other information about your account or the pro in question. Answer: We had a similar experience when first trying Home advisor out. They kept taking money out of our account arbitrarily. I finally had to file stop payment forms at my bank. Then they threatened us with extra fees unless we "settled" our account. We have strict DTPA laws (deceptive trade practice act) in our state. I advised we complain to our Attorney General about this. I think home advisor should be banned in our state because of this fraud.
Answer: I didn't, they have been blowing my phone up for 6 month's now and now they act like thier desperate for me to sign with them. I have absolutely no want or will i ever sign with them after i have heard what thier doing to contractors who have a contract with them. I just signed with a family owned reality company and even they told me not to sign and even when i tell home advisor i don't want thier business they ignore my request and still call and now they act like thier a home owner requesting painting but once i get to asking where they live or information all of a sudden I'm being told to do a background check and i sign up for free! But i have to pay a percentage of my leads or size of job something of that nature where i pay them for a no guarantee of work as i see it. I can't trust handing money to a company that's being deceitful in a phone call off the rip! Just be careful i don't hear good thing's about them all over now.
Answer: Fake leads, sends email, text & calls between 20-30/day and charges for each. Even if Contractor doesn't open Or answer any calls! Will rip off contractors about $800/day until they catch it and no refunds! Do Not Use HomeAdvisor!
Answer: I don't know about the house cleaners but, I do not trust the company based on my own recent experience.
Answer: You don't know you have to call home advisor and wait on the phone for an hr until they pick up
