ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I was desperate for a pair of black boots and hoping that I could find something that didn't look like I raided my teen daughter's closet. I found a great pair of designer boots that fit perfectly for very cheap.
Unfortunately that led me to believe the overall ThredUp experience was better than the reality.
An Eileen Fisher sweater, size S, is listed at 27" bust circumference. Nope, didn't buy this but really? What adult woman has a bust less than 27"?
A pair of cotton pants is listed as 36" waist measurement and "Very Good" condition. Upon receipt the waist measures 30" and the hems have been let out with obvious stitch marks, wear marks and lots of fraying.
Another Eileen Fisher sweater listed as "Very Good" arrived and upon inspection found countless moth holes, one larger than a quarter. How could they miss this?
Their return fee is $4/item plus $11 shipping label - they waive the $4 fee if you point out that the quality is not as described. If you get on the live chat, you can get them to waive the shipping label fee if enough items in the return have quality issues.
They are also slow. Like molasses slow. Slow to ship, website is slow, talking to a live person takes about 30 minutes.
Cleaning up their description issues should be top priority. I'll bet they are losing a ton of money on returns due to description and quality problems. ThredUp could be good but right now I'd be careful about spending money here.
I may like to save money, but I value my time a lot more. When you waste an hour of my time and dump my cart during checkout while I'm signing in because your site insists upon it - and I had 15+ minutes remaining on each item, I suddenly don't have the time to bother with you anymore. Don't waste my damn time.
Mostly sold talbots and similar quality. Payouts usually only 15% of list, which gets me a couple dollars before fees! I have sent in my 4th and last bag to them. They listed a genuine leather jacket from cold creek as faux leather for $9, netting me $1.35. You can definitely do better elsewhere as a seller. It takes about a month to be paid. Shipping is VERY SLOW. I ordered a bag to ship in 10 days ago, as of yesterday they had not even shipped it! As a buyer I like the site, thats why the got one star. Stuff I bought was in nice shape and well packaged but every order takes around 2 weeks to get. Even when I don't opt for bundled Shipping, they still wait and consolidate before shipping!
I have shopped at thredup a few times and have received items that have much more wear and tear than visible on website. I was a little baffled that these items were put up for sale rather than recycled or upcycled as they claim to do. Then I sent a clean out kit to them for resale. Out of 40 or 50 items, only 8 items were listed. To me, they were the most out of date and homely clothes in the lot, and in my opinion overpriced. There were newer, more expensive items which were not listed. I suspect there is another avenue for pricier items and I no longer trust this site. If my items sell, which I don't think they will, I will cash out and be done with this site for good.
They claim they never received my box, but post office receipt indicates it was delivered. They site a Federal Express tracking number.
Their record keeping and organization gets an F.
I turned in a Burberry jacket to sell and they never posted it. When I chatted with someone(you cant speak to anyone) they said there was not a size on it,so they could t sell it and because I didn't agree to the return cost before my items were processed, they gave it away! WHAT? Wow! Going local from now on! This company has gone way downhill!
What a terrible "Closet Cleanout" experience. In theory, this should be fantastic. It's an incredible way to give thousands of people access to great quality items in your closet that just don't fit your lifestyle anymore. However, the entire process took entirely far too long and the payout was not at all worth the wait.
I'm so disappointed that it took 3+ months for them to even go through my bag. After that, you have to wait until AFTER your product is sold and the return window period is over until you get paid out.
Needless to say, I won't ever be sending them my items again. It took entirely too long. I'd rather just go to my local consignment shop, have a 17 year old go through my things, take my cash and drop off the rest of the items at a local shelter.
As a buyer I have been very happy with items. So I decided to try to sell. However the amount you receive is a pittance. But, more to the point, two name brand items were never listed nor can they account for them. I have asked for them to be returned but the customer service/communications is terrible. I will never list items with them again, especially anything that I wouldn't have given away for free anyway.
They take your items and won't give the ones that don't sell back unless you pay them. The ones that sell are charged a hefty fee, and *then* they take more fees. I sold perfect-condition high-end clothing that sold for more than $100; my net "profit" was $15 and after their "fee" I netted 53 cents. I wish I would have just donated the items to charity. If you need to make money on your clothes, you'd be better off going to a local consignment store (even with their fees-they are more fair!) or selling on eBay or facebook marketplace.
I regret that I sent 3 clean out bags to ThredUP. Most of my items were new with tag. Before I sent them, I was thinking if it would not sell I would get them back. So I thought I would give it a try.
Here is the status of one of my clean out kits. 21 items for consignment. As of now, 8 items sold, 7 pending sale and 6 items have not sold. I owed them already $25.98 because of the shipping fee in the beginning to send the clean out bag. And I earned $45.55 so far. Most of my items were new, so I like to reclaim the total 6 items. They are charging $5.99 fee per item. So if I want my items back I have to spend $35.94 + $10.99 (shipping)= a total $46.93. Even though I earned $45.55, after deducting $25.98(first clean out shipping fee) and $46.93(reclaim fee) is now what? I have to spend –$27.41? I didn't realize that they charge $5.99 reclaim fee per item. If it's old and not in good condition, I will not consider reclaiming it, but most of my items are new and in excellent condition. I'm very regretful now for sending the good and new stuff to ThredUP. Also even though it's new with the tag, the payout is same as other used items. This place is a thief.
I purchased from Thred Up several times and in the cases where items were definitely not as described (stained, torn, etc.), I let them know. I was told I could return 3 items out of 20, after I sent photos of the condition (which was very poor not "Excellent" as described). I was promised a refund to my credit card but lo and behold, they issued store credit after I told them I no longer trust their descriptions and would no longer shop with them. I let my credit card issuer know along with evidence. Thred Up also tampered with my ordering history and removed items, but thankfully I took screenshots before they did this. My credit card issuer said I should get a full refund through the dispute process since I have evidence. Be warned--this company is just an algorithm to enrich a few people at the top. They do not care about their workers or customers. It's the way businesses are run these days--grab money, then let a company fall apart...expect the founders to donate to charities and causes they believe in to absolve their empty souls. I have also heard terrible things about those who send clothes to Thred Up. I did so a few years ago and it took them 8 months to review them, they gave me $15 for a large bag of new with tags and flawless Athleta, Banana Republic, Sketchers shoes, and J. Crew items. We get the retailers we deserve and if nobody speaks up, this company wins. I don't like doing business with them and am sharing my experience. I do think they are committing fraud with false advertising and wrongful descriptions of items that they profit from. Take a look at the pictures I posted--do these items look "Excellent"? One is a pink-tinted Michael Stars shirt that looked flawless and unstained in their photo. The other is an Athleta top described as "Excellent" that was faded, pilled, and worn out. They argue when you report that items arrive not as described, they fail to respond, when they finally do, they issue store credit. Be warned!
Do not sell your clothes on ThredUP. I sent clothes some still in the original plastic and unopened, from Victoria's Secret and many other name-brand clothes. Yet only four cheaper and more used items were selected. Those 4 are the only things worthy enough to sell?! Or did they only let me sell those and steal my more expensive clothes? I had practically new checkered vans in that bag, Bearpaw boots, David's bridal dress, and a bunch of Nike WHICH THEY SAID THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO SELL ON THE INSTRUCTIONS. All my items were of good quality. It's a waste of money. I feel like they just stole my clothes. I wouldn't have sent them if I thought they wouldn't be good enough to sell.
I was kind of excited when I saw this site. What a cool idea. But I should have guessed it was a scam. It's so sad that nowadays everything is so sketchy. I will donate my clothes to good will where people will love the awesome clothes I have. Sorry to this company that tried to make it sound like a fun and good thing to do with my clothes.
I liked Thred up but when you redeem the rewards that you have earned you break even. So if you have an item that is 20 % off with code and you also want to redeem rewards example - free shipping you can only use one or the other. Shipping is 10 dollars or you can use your code that will give you 10 dollars off. So you are not saving any money!
I finally received my clean out bag after several requests. I filled it up and sent it back with the understanding that the items they would not except would be sent back. Only after calling many many times I found out this is not the case because I did not choose the assurance option. This option was not in the information listed, and after further look, found it, hidden like most of the things on their website, I called and asked if this be reversed. They said it too was late and my items had been sent off to a recycling site. I called that BS. I do feel that they are reselling someplace else. If you're thinking of doing it, don't. Poshmark, eBay, and other choices are out there. You can control the price and how things are listed. Shame on Thred Up
I just received my order of four skirts totaling $98.00 made on August 28th
Today on September 13 and it is absolute trash. Items were shoved into a green polka dot plastic bag and rammed into my mailbox. The skirts are wrinkled, worn and smell of body odor. Two skirts have terrible static
Cling and are faded. Their status and/or quality are NOT AS REPRESENTED ONLINE. I am VERY DISAPPOINTED and ILL NEVER shop with Thred up again. The company has terrible customer care, and offered me no shipping updates or tracking. It took over 15 days for my purchase to go from Georgia to South Carolina. My purchases are not As representation of what shows on website. These skirts are Goodwill quality and NOT high end consignment. I am a consignment shopper and know what should be expected.
Buyer Beware! Save your money and shop in person elsewhere.
3 times I ordered from them. 9items all together. 3 items I kept, 3 items to my niece and 3 to goodwill. The jeans were Ok. The tops were garage sale items. No more ordering from them. They're garage sale clothes.
They make money selling your clothes. You taking cents and on top you have to pay the shipping. That's more a scam
The "leather" began peeling the first hour of wear. This is the second order for this same shoe.
First shoe order the size was incorrect. No return no credit for either shoe. I'm out $85!
NEVER use this company!
Clothing is way overpriced, especially since most of it is used. One dress wasnt measured correctly so its small on me. The heels I purchased are warped, and the shorts had holes and a loose button not reported. Cannot return because they're final sale. This review comes after two ThreadUp purchases
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
