thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

While it may be a goldmine for buyers, ThredUp is an awful option for sellers. Yes, their policies are clearly stated, but you do not understand the extent to which they will cheat you until it is too late to act. I sent in two clean out bags, and was perfectly happy to pay their costs associated with shipping etc. These bags included 40+ pieces of clothing and shoes, all new with tags, and many from higher quality shops like Talbots, Banana Republic, Macy's, Lord & Taylor and Ann Taylor. Others were from Gap and Old Navy. The payout they gave me was just over $120, and the amount I received after their expenses were taken out was $105. Every item sold quickly (save three), and the amount ThredUp received from those purchases totaled over $700. Clearly they are entitled to a profit for the work and transaction costs associated with their services. But nearly $600? I should have taken a day off of work and sold them on ebay -- it takes more effort, but they don't take advantage of their clients like this place does.

Sent a large bag full of excellent condition used and some new with tags items, about 100 pieces. All were laundered, sorted and folded nicely. They "bought" 18 items from the bag. Because the cost to ship to them was $9.99 and I asked for the remaining items to be returned to me another $10.99, I received no credit! Although they sold all 18 items for approx $10 each... I still received nothing! 100% profit for them, ripped off! I have emailed three people in their organization with no response. Also the bag of items I received back from them were rolled up in a ball, some had tears and rips. Don't waste your time or effort, shop EBay or local consignment shops.

Read the other reviews. This company takes your items sells them at 3 times what they are worth and only give you a small amount back. They further diminish the amount you get by saying an item is not new then sell it for the price of a new garment. They will sell items from forever 21 at the cost of buying it new. I could have made a profit selling on eBay or poshmark. Really does seem like a scam.

Rip Off
April 21, 2017

Yep, what everyone else said... complete and total rip-off. They took brand new designer items with tags from Anne Klein, Ben Sherman, and MNG and gave me a few bucks in return. I sent in a NWT (new with tags) Anne Klein suit and they are only selling the pants. Why would you break up a brand new suit? The jacket was beautiful with zero damage and now it's going to be recycled to make fabric? They claim only 8 out of 14 items are going to be resold but all were in excellent condition and from brand names. I would rather my items have gone to Goodwill or I could have sold on eBay. Never again.

I used to like thredup, but you don't get very much money for the clothes you send in. That wasn't too bad when the shipping was free to send in clothes, but now that there is a deduction for shipping you may end up owing money.

I sent a large bag of items to sell. All name brand. Some new with tags and others never worn. After weeks of waiting for it to be processed, they gave me $30 for everything! There were comments that some of the items had stains or were out dated! This is totally false! Nothing had ever been worn and were a year or less old. There is no way anything was worn or stained! I would never recommend Thred up to anyone! Poshmark has been a wonderful site to work with. I do all my transactions with Poshmark now and am doing very well. Thred up is a total waste of time and money!

No bang for the buck!
April 17, 2017

This company was great in the beginning deducting only 9.99 total. Now it's $20 and the pricing of the items accepted is ridiculous. They give you chump change for designer items. Took over 1 month to process a bag to end up receiving $3.00

When thredUP was first starting, I felt their payouts were reasonable. It's convenient so I was excited. After my first 3 bags, each of which fetched over $100. Things changed. The next bags I sent (with comparable items) received $14, $9 for name brand (boutique brands, Matilda Jane, etc) clothes, many with tags! Payouts are lower than garage sale now.

Shop the basement!
April 17, 2017

I especially have fun shopping the basement and buying myself a little goody or gifts for people. My best finds have been things that have no labels but are actually amazing products! Thanks for providing this service!

I sent in a bag crammed with name brand clothing most of which have NEVER been worn, and the rest in excellent condition. I waited over a month for the bag to be processed until finally a mere $7.80 was put in my account. Iam furious. I have emailed the president James Reinhart and also a Anthony Marino in charge of accounts asked that ALL articles of clothing be sent back to me. Some girl in acct serv emailed me they couldnt do that and told

Rip OFF
April 14, 2017

I sent a full bag of the brands they asked for - Tory Burch, Lululemon, Gap, etc. - for resale. They logged it as a "donation" and didn't pay me, but I can see several of the items for sale on their site. For at least $300 total and I am pretty sure they are the exact garments (colors sizes and brands, linked to other items from the "same seller" that I also sent in). No, I didn't "donate" to your for-profit company (and you know this because you list me as a seller on your website). I donate to many actual charities, I sent you the stuff that was worth too much to donate, to sell! I can't believe this fraud, if I wanted to donate those items they would have gone to actual worthy charities. If they are donating the proceeds, it should be accounted for, I should be informed of the cash amount donated, and I should be able to choose the recipient. ThredUP is a scam.

April 14, 2017

I sent in a bag full of abercrombie, ralph kids clothes a wool jacket unworn. And i got $7. They dont tell you what was accepted or not.
Why sell something for $15 and get $2.70 back at 15% and less than 15 you get 10%
What exactly am i paying them 85% and 90% commission for?
BIG RIP OFF NOT WORTH IT.

I would not use this service again. It is easy, but you are paid very little for your goods. Much more lucrative to sell on eBay and the like. Additionally, I think the clothes on their site are overpriced.

I sent in a HUGE bag full of EUC and name brand clothes. Most had original tags on them. First, it took over 30 days for the bag to be processed. Then I revived news of my "payout". I received $12.91 minus a $10 admin and shipping fee (ok, i get that). So, now I have to wait another 14 days for my credit to process. I felt $12 was very very low for the quality of the items I sent. 2 of my items already sold for $20 each! Next time I'll donate to a local charity or sell on a swap shop. $2 credit is not worth it!

I was impressed with thredUP's selection and bought several items from them. After trying everything on, I decided to return one item. There are several options for returning item, and I chose the one that would give me a full refund but I had to pay $8.99 for a pre-paid shipping label.

The label was never sent to me email. I followed up with customer service, and they sent me an image of the return label. Unfortunately, the image was low resolution and was slightly blurry. The shipper couldn't use it. So I requested another shipping label, explaining that it needed to be an original, unscaled version.

They sent me an image again.

I contacted customer service again (third time now), I didn't hear back within 24 hours. ThredUP puts a time limit on your returns (1 week), and thanks to their poor handling of the shipping label, I was now out of time.

Terrible, time-consuming experience. I won't be using them again.

The WORST experience I've had buying and selling clothing. It took them OVER a month to process my bag full of over 30 pieces of clothing to just rip me off and give a credit of $1.40 for the designer clothes and boutique styles I sent in. Brands like Show Me Your MuMu, Buddy Love, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, so many more. I went through the website to see the listed prices for the items I provided them and they were about half the value of what I originally payed for the. So $1.40 in in-store credit hmmmm. Very strange. They also claimed to only take 33% of what I put in the bag I saw every piece I sent them listed online. It's a scam and it's ripping people off one by one!

The worst experience I've had when selling clothes. The first thing that didn't work for me was that it took them over a month to process my bag once it was received. I waited and waited for my supposed "payout". I filled the bag to the top and forced it shut, that's how much clothes/shoes I sent in. Once my bag was finally processed, I checked the website to see that I had received $1.06 for the 5 items that they decided to buy and sell from my bag. Each item they sold for over $5, and somehow I received about. 20 cents for each item. Most of my items were good brands, gently worn or barely worn. One item I sent in had a price tag of only about 2 or 3 dollars from the dollar store. They sold it for $7.99. You're wrong if you think you're getting a deal when buying from ThredUp or selling to them! This experience was a waste of my time and I could have made more money somewhere like Plato's Closet. One last thing, while waiting impatiently for my bag to be processed I checked my email every day for an update. I never got one for weeks but I did receive one specific email from ThredUp titled "fuq overpriced handbags" clearly it's a classy business. Thank you for reading this, I hope it helped a lot.
