thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I was thinking of selling my designer brand clothes to thedUp but, after reading all the negative comments, I prefer to do business with another company that shows more respect more their customers.

I used to dread this task, somehow it would take up my entire day, I would end up with a mess on the floor and a bag full of clothes and shoes sitting in the corner gathering dust because I would never get around to bringing it to a donation center. ThredUp is 100 times more efficient and easier - order a clean out bag, fill it up, hand it in at the post office. Watch your clothes online get new homes - that is fun, and then I use credits to buy name brand stuff for the kids that I would never pay full price for, since they will outgrow them in a month anyway. And returns are super simple as well. A++

RIP OFF... smh
April 9, 2017

So this is on their site about payouts to its customers lol

"We cant stay in business unless we keep buying items from you. There is absolutely zero reason why wed try and not buy items from you after all, we pay to create the bag ($2), ship you the bag ($1), ship the bag back ($12) and pay the wonderful team members who go through each item ($5/bag). Thats $20 per bag. If we get a bag with only a few items in it that we can resell, we actually lose a lot of money, even if were able to offset some of this cost by working with our network of recyclers. The more items we can resell from you, the better! I cant emphasize this enough."

What does you guys having to stay in business have to do with us? If it is that bad then maybe you should adjust your overhead and if customers are complaining about the payout then adjust that as well. The customer is always right & being in human resources technology I get the hot ear too from those who complain but if you want to stay around fix the complaints first. Point blank I should not get $2 for a $30 shirt & then you sell it for $15 nahh bro thats ridiculous

However, I like how i can send stuff & pay for a bag later & you guys list it but still.

Knitwit! Seriously
April 9, 2017

I have purchased quite a bit of stuff from thredUP and never had a problem. I recently ordered a pair of jeans and when I receive them they were too short. I ended up missing the deadline because of a surgery. So I emailed them asking if I could have a deadline to return extended. What I got in return was an email with the subject, "*******@thredup.com"! Seriously if this is how they view their customers when they asked simple questions you can bet that I'm probably not going to purchase anything further from thredUP. Shortly after I got an apology letter but I'm sorry that just still doesn't cut it! So apparently thread up company thinks there are customers are a bunch of nitwits when they ask questions.

Waste of time.
April 9, 2017

First of all, I sent in a giant bag of nice clothes and thredUp did accept some items for sale, HOWEVER, what you receive in return for the items they do accept is chump change. They did put lots of my items on consignment though and some things have sold, so I'm happy about that. My real rub is that many of my pieces they did not take, even to put on consignment- 24 to be exact- and most of these pieces were in good or excellent condition. I sent in a size small designer suede jacket (that would retail new for $400+) with no stains, rips, holes or tears that wasn't even considered for consignment! I also sent in a designer top that I purchased new and had never worn. It was also not accepted as they told me had stains in the armpits. Don't you just love it when someone tells you something you know isn't true!? :(( ( I sent in a pair of Steve Madden size 6.5 nude/gold colored peep toe shoes that I had worn 2 times- same story... not in good condition- the leather was cracking- BS. Yet, they purchased and consigned many items that I was very surprised about. I am wondering if the employees just take what they want since there is no system in place to record what you're sending in on the customer end. Don't waste your time. I don't trust this company. They are CROOKS and SCAMMERS. I just cashed out what they have sold and HOPE that they actually mail me the money I'm due.

Thumbs way down for thredUp.

Prompt Service
April 10, 2017

I was disappointed to find that I had the wrong item in my order. I had ordered a J. Jill skirt, but received Hunt Club. (The other two items were packed correctly.) I contacted customer service via the chat service. I was told that the issue had to be addressed offline; I would hear from customer service shortly. I was doubtful, but ThredUp came through - my payment had already been returned and the fee to ship the wrong item back to CA was credited. It cost me nothing!

I say it's a scam
April 9, 2017

I sent designer clothes. Including 2 new, never worn leather jackets. A lot of the clothes i sent, expensive like new, i was told was unsaleable. They've sold 3 of the shirts for a total of $56, i received $4. I could make more selling on ebay, a garage sale or at a local consignment store.

Took over two months to turn around my bag. My guess is they are hoping you will forget what you have sent. They claim the "bad condition" of thousands of dollars worth of shoes, then send you no money. Consider thredup a donation site that is a great deal of work for you!

Like most that have used their service, the first bag is "decent" on your resale items. Trust when I say, it is short lived. I had sent 2 bags within days of each other. The first was a tolerable return assessment. The ease of selling with free shipping made it very appealing. The second bag included major designer brand items including a very lightly used yves saint laurent bag. I had chosen the option to donate what they didn't sell given my bag had included shoes. Heels that were barely used (a pair of manolo blahnik's worn once) but shoes, none the less. I chose the option because shoes can always be a fickle resale item. ThredUp gave me nothing and "donated" a purse worth over 1k (new) that would have sold for at least $600 and the manolo's should have been offered for any amount. They were literally worn once. Instead, I was emailed that nothing in the second bag was worth selling and they had donated my items. They are crooks! Shady! Beware!

Scam! Stay away!
April 7, 2017

Horrible scam site! I sent 90% of my clothes being brand new with tags. After getting emails saying a lot of my clothes were being sold, I wondered when I was going get my money, having no idea I was already 'paid' for upfront items. $3?!?! I could've sold just one of my items on ebay and gotten 10x that amount! I wish I researched before I sent all my stuff in.

I am very disappointed in the Thred Up company. I sent them a huge bag of nearly new designer clothing and they offered me $23 to shop with. When I hadn't used that in a month, it disappeared. There is no 800 number to call and communicate with anyone. I feel like I've been ripped off. I wish I had my clothes back.

I sent a bunch of gently used clothes in to ThredUp as a seller. After 6 weeks of hearing nothing, I chased them twice and a few days later I received just 0.30c for the entire bag and worst of it was, I sent two brand name tops which were exactly the same and had been worn only few times so were in near perfect condition. They were different colors but other than that, exactly the same top and same condition. I received the 0.30c for one and nothing for the other. Total rip off. They might as well state they are a charity rather than a re-sale site because I essentially gave away half of my brand name wardrobe for nothing. You have to pay $12 for the 'privilege' to get a bag to send in your seller items. Their prices are not competitive as a buyer either. Avoid like the plague unless you just want to get rid of your clothes for nothing to make space. I'd have sooner given them to a homeless person than to be ripped off in this way. Their money grabbing, unfair practices are nothing like they claim. Plus I've taken a look on their site and seen clothes on there that I am certain were from me that I didn't get credit for and there are much worse clothes on there in terms of quality than what I sent in. Terrible terrible practice.

People, this is a for-profit company. I've seen people post things like, "Thanks for the initiative to help other," and "I continue to be impressed with your company's mission and work." Again, this is a FOR-PROFIT company. There is no "higher" initiative or mission other than to put money into their own pockets. I believe these 5-star reviews are either paid writers or written on behalf of their employees. In truth, yes, they do sell designer items (used) at prices that are competitive with Ebay, Mercari, and others, BUT they are making HUGE profits from those items sent in by their customers. You would be better off finding a consignment store in your area, selling on Ebay, or donating to a charity (help your local community) other than Goodwill (another rant for another time).

My experience:
Once my bag was processed (nearly two months), I was shocked and disappointed to see how little my payout was. I sent them 25 items (quality and in mint condition) and 10 were accepted. Nine of the items received an upfront payment of 5% - pennies. I was not offered an option for consignment nor a trade-in value. If you want to receive your payout payment versus using as store credit, you may have it sent via a visa gift card or Paypal, but not before paying the fees for those. After shipping and fees, I am left $3.01. Sickening.

I was initially impressed with ThredUp - no charge for the bag, quick processing and fair $ amount offered for what I sent. Now it is the complete opposite. The last bag I sent in contained about 8 items - including shoes, coats and brand new items with tags. I was paid just over $12 for all of it - subtract the processing fee I essentially made nothing. Kicker is that ThredUp charged close to $100 for all of it - nice profit for them - totally not worth it for me. I'm waiting for my final bag to be processed (which now takes around a month...) and will be cashing out my account and saying goodbye.

STAY AWAY!
April 2, 2017

Do NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES sell on this site

You will receive several dollars --if you are lucky- after they deduct their shipping fee. And can guarantee you----that is all It is about making THEM VERY wealthy ---- not to get anything into your pocket. This site is about THE OWNERS --- a group of guys who figured out a way to make a quick buck on a public who is out here trying to make a few dollars to help with the flat and declining income of most Americans. Don't do it. Do not make them wealthier than they are. They don't need your clothing. They will list a few pieces out of a full bag. And the rest ---- especially the better brands --- will disappear You will see between 2 and7 dollars and the remaining question will be---- where did the rest go. Believe me, we're all asking that question in chat rooms about the site. More than a few have filed formal complaints with the BBB in California---their district. And investigation is quietly underway. We suspect selling of the better items elsewhere. In other words, two women have now found rejected items of theirs on another site, bought them and not so amazing --- it was their items. Two j crew dresses So my advice.? Spread the word ------THIS IS A SCAM. STAY AWAY. There are other sites. Lots of them. And they're legitimate. Your items are listed and an explanation sent to u with reason if rejected Stay away from these guys. They're using their consignors and laughing all the way to the bank. I mean this very sincerely
DO NOT. UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES USE THIS SELLING SITE. DO NOT LET THEM TAKE
ADVANTAGE OF YOUR DEsPERATION TO GET A FEW DOLLARS INTO YOUR HOUSEHOLD. THEY DO NOT CARE iN THE SLiGHTEST ABOUT YOUR LEGITIMATELY GENUINE FINANCIAL ISSUES tHIS IS A CON. AVOID THIS SITE LIKE iTS THE PLAGUE. IM WARNING YOU SO THAT YOU DONT GET BURNED LIKE SO MANY OF US HAVE. PLEASE. STAY AWAY. PLEASE. PLEASE. THESE ARE NOT VERY ADMIRABLE PEOPLE. NOT THE KIND of PEOPLE AnYONE WHO I S DOING THIS FOR THEIR FAMIlY SHOULD HAVE TO HAVE cONTACT WITH IN THEIR LIFE. YOU DESERVE BETTER. DONT GIVE THEM THE TIME OF DAY -----OR YOUR ENERGY EVER yOU DESERVE BETTER.

Rip off.
April 1, 2017

I bought a jacket that was described as being a silk jacket. What came was something resembling a 1980s leisure suit jacket, complete with ribbed polyester resembling corduroy. To send it back, I get the pleasure of loosing about 1.2 of the amount paid for the item, as well as to pay them for the p, ensure of shipping it back to them. Can you say Scam? Never buying from them again!

I have ordered from Thredup several times and have been very happy with my purchases. The selection seems infinite, and I appreciate being able to see only items in my size. Everything arrives promptly and is as described. I feel like I have gotten some great bargains and have filled my closet with a bunch of new options for very little. I also love the convenience of being able to find a lot of different brands and stores all on one site. I think you have the best results when you pay attention to the sizing of specific brands (i. E., either buy brands you know what size you wear in, or track down brand-specific size charts). The measurements listed on the website are a little hit or miss. Returns are easy as they can be sent back in the same box within fourteen days and processed quickly. Returns are free if you opt for store credit, which I always do because I know I will use it.

If you are looking to make money, I do not necessarily recommend this site. Sellers can expect to make very little even on very nice items (dollars or even cents), but they are upfront about that, which I respect. Use the payout calculator and believe what it is telling you. Given the fee deducted to cover shipping and processing, you would probably be better off consigning locally or having a yard sale if your goal is to sell your clothes for money. However, when I sent in my bag, I considered it "paying it forward." The only reason I have been able to find so many bargains on nice things is that other people have sent in their clothes. If everyone stopped sending in cleanout bags, the site would not be what it is, and since I can't make it to a million yard sales all over the country, I appreciate that this exists. Considering how much I have gotten out of it as a buyer, I can live with the flipside disappointment of selling.
