thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

Ripped off by thredUP
February 2, 2018

As a public service, I want to share my unbelievably horrible experience with thredUP. In case you aren't familiar with them, they are an online clothing resale company. I did a major closet clean out in December and sent three very large bags of brand new, high quality clothing and shoes to thredUP. Of the first two bags, they accepted 26 items, and my payout was just over $15. You read that right... less than $. 60 per item. And because I requested that my remaining items be returned to me (for $10.99 shipping), I'll be netting a whole $4.62 for my 26 items. Unfortunately, rejecting the offer is not an option, so I had no choice but to just accept the staggering loss. Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, I received an email claiming that the third bag "contained insects and was thrown away", with absolutely no supporting evidence. I personally packed and sealed that bag and can guarantee that there were no insects in it, yet I have no way to prove it. For all I know, they're happily selling it's contents as I type this. I am literally sick that I sent THOUSANDS of dollars worth of clothing and shoes to thredUP only to essentially have it stolen from me. I would have much rather given these items to friends or donated them to people in need than to have this incredibly dishonest company profit from it. I used to be a huge fan of buying from thredUP, but I can never buy from them again now that I know how much they take advantage of their sellers. The damage is done for me, but please spread this information far and wide so that you can help prevent this from happening to anyone else. #thredUPscam #thredUPripoff

I don't know about buying because after my selling experience I gave up the site all together. I sent a large bag of women's clothes in excellent condition - some even new with tags. They kept maybe 4 articles, sent the rest back (charging me to send back) and then they gave me next to nothing for what they kept! Even the brand new with tags item - they didn't even give me 10% of what I paid for it. This site is a rip off! Do NOT bother trying to sell to them.

My New Addiction
January 29, 2018

ThredUP is my new addiction. I made three large purchases so far, and have scored some amazing buys on my favorite department store brands. Everything was either new with tags or in like-new condition.

I've read through the negative reviews about selling to thredUP, and feel they're somewhat unfair. If you read through the information under their Clean Out link, the company is very clear about what they accept, what happens to unaccepted items, and how you can optionally have these items returned to you. They also provide a Payout Estimator so you can get an idea of what you will be paid for your items. If you take the time to review this information before you send them your clothing, you'll know what to expect. That said, the number of reviews reporting negative selling experiences indicate there's a disconnect between what sellers expect and what thredUp pays out. ThredUP could probably use some PR help to bridge that gap.

I do plan to sell to thredUP, even though I realize I will recoup only a fraction of what I originally paid for my items. My reasons? 1) It's easy. I just send my items in the postage paid bag. I clean out my closet two to three times a year and I don't have time to sell on eBay or haul my stuff to a consignment shop. 2) Like most women, I have many "mistakes" taking up space in my closet -- impulse buys, sale items, shoes that pinch, those "what was I thinking" purchases, etc. Why not pass these items along to someone else who will be thrilled to find them on thredUP?
3) Recent changes in the tax law eliminated my need to itemize deductions on Federal taxes. That means I can no longer claim a tax deduction for donations to Goodwill. 4) For the items sold to thredUP I can select my payout as a credit against future purchases. What is not accepted will be sold to third party sellers or passed along to recycling partners and upcycled.

I do plan to send some items to thredUP and have ordered my cleanup kit. Once the process is complete I will update this review with my selling experience

ThredUP sells great quality clothing at really good prices. From the $$ they receive for sales they also need to pay expenses to keep the operation going. That includes buying their inventory at low prices and paying their employees to inspect incoming items to ensure quality control.

I like to think of thredUP as Good Karma -- I exchange my unused items for great clothing finds, priced way below retail, that I can wear immediately. So keep an open mind and give thredUP a try.

WORST EVER
January 21, 2018

I have sold clothes to consignment stores, online, on Facebook and at garage sales. ALL of them netted more money by 100 times than this rip off Thread Up. I can't imagine how their company runs but for me and 20 items, 12 NWT, all good brands, I got 55 cents. Yes, that's right and another is awaiting sale. So what do they do with the other items. They say they donate it but I would bet there is something else going on where they make additional money without telling those of us stupid enough to send them the items. NEVER AGAIN. DON'T USE THIS COMPANY.

Not worth the effort
January 19, 2018

This is a second hand online selling or purchasing site. I actually made a purchase of two pairs of jeans, one blouse, and one clutch. Very disappointed in my purchase. One pair of jeans does not match the picture or description. In the online picture they appear to be a slim straight leg with a little kick at the hem. They are a relaxed skinny jean. The blouse appears to have been shrunk, and the clutch, which I paid $80.00 dollars for is more of a pencil bag (a very small pencil bag). Plus that was a final sale item, so no return. Yes, they do have free returns, but you actually get charged a $8.99 handling and processing fee. Will not purchase again, and for your own sake "BUYER BEWARE"!

Great findings!
January 14, 2018

I did my first purchase all excited because with the 40 % discount I ended up spending 85 to get free shipping as well. Items are in good Condition. The order divided in 3packages from different locations. I am very happy with my purchase. However, now that I'm finding out they don't pay well to the sellers, I feel very bad :(

Great company to buy from, horrible to sell to. Youd do MUCH better to sell on eBay. I understand their concept but if they dont start paying out more all will become wise and will stop sending their inventory.

No Don't
December 30, 2017

I had filled two bags. I had a mix of new clothes and worn clothing. I know I had a couple of items worth atleast half price, since this website sells for much more. They told me one jacket had a spot (you are supposed to clean all clothing before) and that it was not worth anything because of it. It was a gift from a few years ago and it did not fit then or now. If I did not see such expensive prices to buy, I might have tried again, but, this service is more about profit than recycling. Oh well. Will not use this service again!

I had sent a Clean Out bag this past summer and had a great return on a few items. I was really pleased. I just received the info on my latest bag that had over 20 items. I will receive about 9 dollars for 13 items. Other items were placed on "consignment". I didn't pay for the return assurance because of my last experience which was positive. Some items this time weren't mentioned in either list of items. I guess they were donated. Never again. Really disappointed. Better return on EBay.

Complete Rip Off
December 26, 2017

Thred up accepted 6 articles of clothing from me (including one that had a tag on saying it retailed for $55) and in the end I'll cash out less than 4 dollars. Since the clean up kit costs $5, I wont make any money from all the effort of shipping pretty expensive clothes to them. DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT TO SELL

ThreadUp rip off
December 25, 2017

Oh my word! ThreadUp has certainly changed over the years. I would send in bags of clothes and get paid a lot of money in the past. One time, I sent in clothes and was paid over $200. Those were the good old days. NowI send in about 20 items and get paid about $20 and its a huge ripoff now. They will pay you mere cents for your items now. In years past, low end brand names from stores like Target and Walmart and even Payless Shoes were never even accepted. Now the company accepts anything and marks up the prices sky high and unsuspecting customers are scammed into thinking they are getting great deals. You must know your prices. I will only buy purses from them like LeSportsac and Kipling. Nothing else anymore. They should be ashsmed for charging so much for merchandise the way they do.

Update to prior review
December 24, 2017
Updated review

Wanted to update on my prior review. I ultimately filed a complaint with the BBB folllowed by a complaint for false/misleading advertising with the AG. The BBB complaint did receive some follow up by ThredUp. In it they sent photo's of what were supposed to be "spots" on two of the purses, of which there were none, not even in the photos. The 3rd purse was approved for their "store" and I did receive a small additional amount of credit for it. They have never been able to locate the additional missing items and never responded to the whereabouts of the two most expensive and best condition items. I still believe that this business model will bite them in the tail. They are violating customer confidence with misleading advertising and promises of "helping those in need" by donating items. They have yet to provide proof that this actually happens. I refuse to shop with them as do all of my friends. The day will come where they will have to answer for their practices.

Buyer - OK Seller - Know what to expect
October 28, 2017
Previous review

Buying: I have had a good experience with purchasing items from thredUp. Items arrived in a timely manner, well packaged and in condition as described. I do tend toward items new with tags and only from brands that I already know my sizing. One item received was sold as a 'tall" but when I got it was actually a Petite. They do have a decent return policy and I had no problems returning it.
Selling: I must say I tried this once and that will be my last. I would highly recommend that you make a list and take your own pictures. It operates a little opposite of what you would expect. I received 10% of items listed - you can see the items listed. Most of my items sold right away - so I think the 10% cut is pretty low for their investment. The PROBLEM is that I also included 3 handbags in my cleanout bag. I am realistic in what consignment condition is and these handbags are in excellent condition, all have very little if any indication of use... 2 Coach bags with all cards, original tags (removed but in a pocket of the bag) and storage bags (2 off the 3) included. 1 Tiganello bag in excellent condition. All current style, no smells, etc... I have gotten no feedback on the whereabouts of the handbags. They are not in the items listed in my account for upfront payment and no one will return my requests for the whereabouts of them. There are handbags listed for sale on the site that are out of style and in bad condition, so I find it hard to believe that the bags were not suitable for sale. I will not send my items to thredUP again and considering the ethics of the company, I will spend my $14.70 and not likely purchase from them again. I would feel better donating the items myself - the owners have taken good intentions and mismanaged themselves into allowing unethical practices. They need to get a handle on this or they will end up in trouble. I will be filing a complaint with the State AG office and BBB as well. If you can't itemize deductions, then you can sell your items elsewhere, otherwise - you're better off taking the tax deduction for donating items. ThredUP is paying less than FMV for donations per item (check out goodwill or salvation army sites for donation value for taxes).

Dishonest
December 23, 2017

I should have read reviews first, MY Bad! Everything I sent New or high end supposedly wasnt accepted and "donated". Clothing from Inc and brand new name brand shoes that were never worn once were not accepted. I would have asked for the clothes back BUT they charge you to ship it back. I should have taken pictures of all the items but learned my lesson with this company. They even ask for a review after you send your 1st bag but dont bother because you will not hear from them.

What a rotten, scandalous company! Do not send your clothes. Just like everyone else's reviews(wish I would have reviewed them before I sent). Same story, great bag of clothes, only sent the nice, some with tags clothing and I was given in return $1.30! Cant believe it! They are thieves the whole bunch of them. When I talked to customer service they replied that "under a black light, the clothes showed stains"! WHAT! Are you kidding me! Brand new clothes, never worn! You people have lost your minds! I will never buy or send my clothes to this company again, will not support a company that steals!

SELLER BEWARE!
December 21, 2017

Basically just stole my clothes! Sent a huge bag of clothing, with about 1/4 of them still with tags. Popular brand names from adidas to anthropology. How much did I make...? ZERO! But Im sure they made out well with my clothing. Consignment is such a great win win partnership until someone comes along and throws a wrench in it! Never again will I participate in a mail-in consignment that you just have to trust. Sad. Dont send them your clothes unless you just have a bunch of crap you want to get rid of... would serve them well!

I have consigned with local retailers and with Swap.com. I thought I would give thredUP a try. Sent in a bag of fairly expensive items, all of which had either never been worn (with tags on) or worn once and dry-cleaned. Items included limited edition William Rast jeans, a Lilly Pulitzer dress, a handmade Elizabeth & Jolie seersucker dress, and many Ralph Lauren polo shirts. My payout amounted to $12.

It cost more to dry-clean the Elizabeth & Jolie dress (which cost over 170$ and was worn ONCE at a wedding), than I got paid for all the high-quality, designer items I sent. I made $14 on a (yes, a, as in ONE) Forever21 dress with Swap.com last week!

Consign elsewhere, or better yet, DONATE. I regret this so much. I should have donated this entire bag of nice items to people who really needed it instead of making a measly $12 from a ripoff company.

P.S. Was sent an email to follow-up on my experience and am still waiting on a response.

Don't sell with them!
December 15, 2017

I sent in my second bag with several brand name pieces (JCrew coat, Burberry rain boots, Signature Report heels and brand new Calvin Klein flats). They didn't accepted the pieces, but they did sell it to a third party company. I ask their customer service and they explain it was because due to stain, which I believe they use that for all their excuses to not accept the items. They sent me pictures of my unaccepted items, which they had an employee hold it up and the picture is taken from a distance. I can say, they do have a good customer service and quick to respond to emails. I suggested you research before you sell with them, I made the mistake of no doing that. I did that after the fact, I realized employees had complained about the company and employees stated that the company low balled the sellers.
