ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I'm ashamed to say I gave them another shot. Sent in 2 more bags and their processing time has improved, down from 6 weeks to 1 once the bag arrived. BUT the pay out amounts have not. First bag sent back had several items with tags/never worn (4 out of the 9 items accepted) and was offered less than $15 ($14.65 to be exact - not even $2 an item). That is ridiculous based on how much they'll mark everything up for the resale.
I know, I know, "Fool me once..." but come on!
Don't bother if you think you're going to be offered a lot. And I wouldn't buy knowing how little the sellers receive.
I've sent 4 bags and the first 2 were accepted and the cash up front amount I received back was OK. However the third bag was a different story. First it took them almost a month and a half to process, then you have to wait 2 weeks to cash out, and a fee to "up-cycle" the non accepted items. I would be OK with this if they would at least tell you what was not accepted and why. (Because I think we all think our items are worth more than what they offer). Plus I think they don't offer as much back on each consecutive bag you send in.
Granted I was not using any of the items, but they priced a dress for $26 and I only was paid $10 for the entire bag (only 7 items were accepted, one on consignment and that bag was FULL). My items are good, and in great shape (EVERY item I've sent in has sold, one on the first day it was listed). And the descriptions of items are way off base. "Minor pilling"? Where? "Stains can be improved after washing?" Where? At this point I'd rather donate to Good Will. This whole process is a border line scam. I'm cashing out and not looking back.
Paid $11.99 for expedited shipping. Ordered on Wednesday morning, and it is Monday night and still no package. Emailed 3 times no response. Sucks cause I was a regular purchaser.

I have tried customer service, no one will respond. I purchased two items, both listed as 5X, shipped separately. Both were actually medium not even plus size. So you want me to pay you $8.99 to return the items and get my money back for your mistake. Seriously? You don't respond to e-mails or phone calls. There should be a law -- oh I bet there is. I'll check into that.

I will never use this company again. I purchased some item and was unable to return them. I sent several emails and never got my problem solved. I was told to use the chat icon but there was no icon when I logged on. I only had 14 day to return my items and I was unable to get my problem solved within the 14 day. Both my husband and I called because we could not figure out how to return the items. We also called and left messages on a phone number and no one returned my calls. Now I am stuck with several items that did not fit me and a few that were stained therefore, I cannot wear them to work. As a teacher on a very limited budget, I cannot afford to spend money on clothing and now I have several pieces of clothing that I cannot wear.

Update 3-16-2018: Today, items that were in my cart for a while at $9.99 showed up at a sale price of over $50. That is without me removing the item from my cart- the price went UP over 200%. Maybe that is the UP in ThredUP?
I was eager to continue shopping at this site because I love the idea of resale clothing (reduce, reuse!). I was joyous at the 40% off coupon for new users and placed my first order in a matter of days. That is when things started to go downhill. First, once I refilled my cart (which is supposed to be a guaranteed hold for 12-24 hours {depending on if you've made a purchase before or not I assume}) the site managed to delete the contents 3x. In the course of an hour. Which, for those of you familiar with the site itself know, means half of the items I spent my time searching out were immediately gone. This happened every day for 2 weeks, always at a different time, always for some unknown reason.
Next, thredup seems to have added a new feature, BUT ONLY FOR SOME, where you are allowed to purchase something that is in someone else's cart - "once it is removed". So if you have something in the cart and the site "glitches", that item is gone, automatically bought by someone who for some reason has far more power than you do.
Some of the items I've attempted to place in the cart to purchase together have been fine for a day or so, but when checked to renew just mysteriously disappeared, only to reappear as purchased or with a price increase. It seems that items can disappear without even a seconds notice, which to me points to someone who knows how to use the system to their advantage...
My favorite thing so far, however, is that once you make your first purchase and use the lovely 40% coupon code, it seems as though NO OTHER COUPON CODE ABOVE 15% is applicable to your cart. Lovely, right? I am determined to get a decent coupon, so when over a dozen places list a 30% coupon with the only qualifications being "Valid for everyone, may vary" I call BS.
In summary, I believe that the idea behind thredup is genius. I also believe that the system is set up to fail purposefully to remove the usefulness of the "reserving" feature of the carts. There is some indefinable void between those shoppers who are "good enough" to get priority shopping including from others carts and the rest of us. Finally, I highly doubt that the site will offer any decent coupons to returning customers until a certain amount of money is spent.

They used to have nice clothes available but now everything is garbage. Can't find anything cute on there anymore.
Thank you for your review, Maria! We're adding thousands of new items to our site daily. We hope you find something to enjoy soon!
To buy from them, great! To sell to them... DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! I sent in 3 stuffed bags of clothes, shoes and jewelry. Name brand and some new with tags. While they are making tons of money off my items... I made a total of $12! They are ripping off sellers! I'll NEVER consign with them EVER again! I should have checked the reviews BEFORE selling to them!

Eventually ThredUp will have to fold after taking advantage of first-time sellers. I heard about them on a podcast and thought I'd send in clothes. Sent several J. Crew and Banana Republic items still with tags and made $3. Sure, their rules are laid out, but the pay outs are not fair and I will never buy or sell or recommend any friends do the same from here on out. Do not waste your time.

I was excited to get rid of some of my good clothes that I don't wear any longer, and heard about Thred UP... I sent new things, barely worn items, brand new Calvin Klein shoes, etc. They literally gave me pennies to the dollar. They sold a pair of my boots for $24.99, I got $1.40, other items I received. 70 cents... I'd rather donate the clothes/shoes to people who need them then to get next to nothing them. I remembered the brand new shoes and messaged them about them. I got a nasty gram with a photo of them saying they "forgot" them on my list. And again, gave me next to nothing. First and last time I will sell on their site. :(

I sent them a bag of clothes, jewelry and purses. Once they got my bag all I got in my account was $4.00. I saw that all my items were sold and no money was put into my account. I sent them a few messages with NO response. I had to let it go and know that this company is a joke.
Please dont waste your time and send them anything. I will NEVER deal with this company again.

I have experience selling clothes to thrift shops, but decided to give thredUP a try with a recent batch of clothes I was getting rid of. I had to request a bag several times before one actually arrived to my house weeks later. I filled the bag with like-new shoes, designer jeans, skirts and tops, dropped it off at the post office, and received an email from thredUP that my items were on their way. About a week and a half later I received an email that my items had been accepted, logged into my account and found that I had earned a whopping $8.25 for the 7 items that they bought. My items have all sold on the website, totaling over $200. The 5% payout you receive is a joke, and makes the hassle of ordering the bag, packing it, and dropping it off at the post office not even worth it. I will not sell here again.

Good deals for buyers. Do not waste your time selling. On most items you will get 5% of their list price. Totally not worth the trouble. I'd rather donate to goodwill than donate it to a for profit business. Selling at virtually any other consignment or resell store will yield more than 5%. Even a yard sale would yield a higher profit. 5%. If they sell your jeans for $10 you will get 50 cents. I understand they have overhead but stop donating to these people and they will have to rethink their payout or they will go under. For the few people who have stated that this is reasonable, please send me all your designer clothes for free and I will do with them as I please. I think these people are either joking or are affiliated.
In response to Thredup's response below:
I did not ask a question. You did nothing but confirm what I said already. I'm not stupid, and I did check your links regarding payouts BEFORE using your service, so sharing them in response to my review is a little insulting as if I either did not bother to check your policies or implied that you were lying on your site. I did neither. I simply shared my opinion of your policies and the selling experience. If I had a question, I would have contacted your customer service department. I left a review on a non-affiliated site to let others know that selling to you is a complete rip-off and should be avoided. I stand by that, and I do not need your opinion of my opinion. Thanks!
Hi Christine. Thank you for your comment. We take all customer feedback very seriously as we continue to improve our service.
While our clean out process may not offer the highest payouts, we try our best to provide more convenience (no driving, negotiating with buyers, or dealing with rejected items). For this reason, we are not able to provide the greatest payouts for items that are already highly discounted.
We understand if your goal is to earn more money that you may seek out other consignment options, and we certainly respect that. We are always here to help sell your items and clear your closet in the most convenient way possible!

I do a lot of online shopping at second hand stores. I tried really hard to find something to buy so I could do a complete review on the experience. I just couldn't find anything worth what was being asked. You can get a better deal at other sites for the same items. The ONLY thing that was appealing to me, is that they have the items ready to be shipped. At other sites, such as poshmark, you don't know if you will get what you've bought due to sellers not being active any longer. I will keep trying to see if I can find something I feel is a good deal.
Hi Susan, thank you for your feedback and your interest in thredUP! We're adding thousands of new items every day. We know you'll find something you'll love soon. Feel free to send us a message should you have any questions. Happy shopping!
Don't expect to make a lot of money. But if you just want to get rid of clothes and you don't want them to go to waste, you might get some extra pocket change. I understand that the sell price is up to their discretion. However, I sent them $700 worth of clothes in new or like new condition, some even with tags, and they payout is very minimal. The first problem is their estimated original costs are all over the place. Some items i paid $60 for and they estimated them at $20. So they don't have a handle on the brands. Keep this in mind if you are sending anything of value. The second problem is they sell most items under the $15 mark even if they estimate the original value to be $60. I sent $700 worth of clothes. They are selling for $163 (most have already sold). The payout based on their current policies is only $12. I will say their customer service was incredibly responsive to my concerns. Hopefully their policies will improve. For now, this is just an easy way for me to get rid of clothes that I don't feel like selling and shipping on my own.

So, I sent in a second bag thinking that maybe the bad experience was a one-time thing.
They accepted and sold almost everything (one item didn't sell).
11 items.
I got $6.90
I'd rather just give it all to a Buy Nothing Facebook group.

It's so little money for what you give them. I sent over a huge bag of premium women's/kids clothes, which totaled over $200 in inventory for them (probably close to $1,000 full retail) and I got about $22. So not worth it. I've gone in person to places like Buffalo Exchange and got between 40-60% of what they will eventually charge. ThredUp doesn't even offer a higher amount for a trade in value, which they should. There should be a "cash out" amount, and a "shop with us" amount. Also, I bought a pair of shoes and a cardigan with my "cash out". The cardigan was labeled as new (I paid $30 for it), and it had a hole in it.
I used to make fair money with them a couple of years ago, but they have become progressively worse. Now it is. 25 to. 35 per item. I owned a resale shop, so I understand how the process works, but they have started taking more and more and giving less and less and they rarely buy anything outright anymore. I am sending name brand clothing and occasional designer pieces, but will take to local places to resell or use Poshmark or Ebay. I sent to them for convenience sake, but after they take out the bag charges, it is literally nothing.

I'm writing this largely in response to everyone who has said that thred up is a scam. It's not. They clearly state in their FAQs and in the terms of service that it is 100% up to their discretion what they choose to sell, and how much they pay for it. Anyone who isn't okay with this shouldn't send their clothes in.
That being said, I've noticed within the last few months that they've restructured their pricing and I'm making WAY less than I was before. The first bag I sent in, I made $66 with only 3 consignment items (none of which sold). My most recent bag, I only made $10 upfront, and then an additional $22 off of 22 consignment items. It's clear that they're selling more items on consignment, probably to offset the cost of stocking items that never sell, which I imagine is a decent amount of their inventory.
Thred Up is fantastic for what it is - a way to send off your unneeded clothes and hopefully make a few bucks, while not having to deal with listing and shipping things online or visiting consignment stores. Those who have 'thousands of dollars' worth of NWT items should take them to a consignment store where they can make back 40% of what it sells for.

Thredup paid me 65 cents on an item they sold for $12.99 and 50 cents on one that went for $9.99. Their rip off strategy should be illegal and exposed to all!

I have shopped with them in the past and been pleased for the most part. Not any more. Just ordered four items and received them yesterday. All four are very worn and pilled, not to mention old. They had lint and hair on them. The web description was quite misleading. Would have gotten better quality for much less at a thrift store. Thredup prices in general are ridiculous. If you want to return something, they charge you $9! Easier to just donate it. No more Thredup for me.

I discovered this site/app about a year ago and anytime I'm looking for something specific, this is the first place I look. I've gotten some amazing deals on barely used jeans, shorts and dresses. They ship super quickly and thankfully I've never had to return anything (they typically post the measurements of items, so just have your measurements on hand!)
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
