ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

My last order (two tops) was not as described, however I normally have good experiences. I ordered a shirt described as "gray" but when it arrived, it was navy blue. I bought it to go specifically with a pair of gray and black pants but I kept it because I could wear it with other stuff. The other top was described as "polyester" which is very easy to care for (exactly what I was looking for) but it was actually 100% silk. I liked the top and did keep it but it has to be dry cleaned. I'm hoping this was just a fluky experience!
The dress is beautiful! Fits nicely! Item arrived on time! I would recommend thredUP to my friends! Thank you so much!
Hi Cynthia,
Thank you so much for your review! We are so happy to hear that you loved your order. Happy shopping. :)
Not only does threadUP keep clothing and accessories out of our landfills by re-homing them, but the quality of their items is great. Some are new with tags still attached! I have found their shipping to be prompt and the packaging more than adequate. Highly recommend.
Thanks for your review Kelly! We are delighted to hear that you had a fulfilling and positive experience with us. Thanks for choosing used!
You've been warned. I sent in items for sale before a big move. Most of the items were worn once or twice or still had tags. I liked that they recycled items that they couldn't sell, so I sent off 2 boxes. Not everything was selected, which is totally understandable. Some designer shoes I wore twice were actually not good enough for sale, but that didn't upset me. What upset me was the ridiculous prices they paid for the items they did accept. Everything was basically under $5. So I looked on their site for a comparison. The ugliest, cheap-looking items were at least double what they were offering me for items that were basically brand new and quite trendy. I helped a friend use Poshmark and she had a much better experience. So I would recommend it over Thredup ANY day.
Thank you for your review Carla and we're sorry to hear about your disappointment. At thredUP, we aim to be the most convenient way to pass along your unwanted clothing responsibly. We always aim to provide as much information about our Clean Out services as possible so sellers have realistic expectations around selling results. We do display our payout structure (http://bit.ly/2vu1OaH) to allow customers to get a better idea of how much they'll earn. Please contact our customer service team via thredup.com/contact if you have further questions.
Returned over a 150 bucks of merchandise. They claimed "items were not the same as sent" and attempted to give an 18 dollar credit on the site instead of returning 150 to credit card. Twelve useless emails in and its like banging your head against the wall.
Also, they sold me NWT items and marked the "estimated retail" as twice the price on tag. They charged more for the item than if I had bought new in store.
Love the concept but the customer service is so abysmal. Second negative experience with them. Won't be buying ever again. Not Worth it! Stay away.
Hi Debra. Thank you for your review. We have sent you a private message to discuss these concerns further.
They took a ton of pieces from me and my payout was like $7.00. Some of the pieces were designer with tags still attached. Then they charged me a $5.00 fee for something arbitrary that was written in fine print. They then turn around and sell it for a huge profit. It's serious the most f*%$#$ up business model, it's hard to believe it's even legal. I have a small amount of "credit" to use but I don't even want to support their "business" in any way so it's just sitting there.
Thank you for your review Eugenia. We're sorry to hear about your disappointment. We do hope to manage expectations initially around what you can make with us. Our payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) is provided to help give users a better idea of how much they'll earn. We also provide our payout structure via http://bit.ly/2vu1OaH. We have sent you a private message to discuss further.
I bought an expensive purse. When I received the item, the invoice said final sale, marked in red. Which meant I could not return the purse. The photo of the purse was very deceiving, it was tiny, but did not look liken that in their photo.
I could not look back on the original page to see if there was any mention of "final sale" on my account and it is next to impossible to reach them.
I will never buy from them again.
Hi Solis,
Our email records indicate that a Customer Service agent has responded to your inquiry regarding this item. We can assure you that this item #40530242 contained the measurements in the description. Please refer to your ThredUP account email "[email protected]" for the agent's response via [email protected]. Thank you.
I purchased a pair of boots I'm not too happy with. But what was disappointing, they had these really nice designer boots I could not purchase because they disappeared from the web site and I could no longer find them! When I tried, that page was no longer available, they wanted me to look at a site showing tons of shoes! I know what that was about so I deleted their web site. It's their loss, I shop a lot on line!
Hi Carrie. Thank you for your review. Since everything is unique on our site, an item can no longer be available if purchased by another customer. We suggest filtering your search by similar brands and styles to find another item that might catch your eye!
I placed a few orders, all but a couple were NWT. I received my first order and the NWT ones were good, although at close to $100 a piece I didn't appreciate designer handbags shipped unprotected in an envelope. I recieved the first of the ones I purchased that were described as "excellent condition" comparing it to new.
It has 2 tears in the front. And inside was some makeup and a NEEDLE SYRINGE!
When I contacted them, a 30% refund was issued. They have a "final sale" on all handbags but do not stand behind their product when they mess up. And even the response I received stated this.
30% is not good enough. I don't want a damaged handbag. And 30% of the $80 I paid was not even close to making it right. They falsely advertised it, and they still refused my return.
And let's not forget about the needle my kids could of easily found before me. Thankfully it didn't. This would not even be close to over!
Hi Angela. We understand why this is alarming - we’re alarmed too and that is not okay. While our team is as thorough as possible when inspecting items for acceptance, human error does sometimes happen. That definitely does not excuse this instance and we’re truly sorry this was your experience. It looks like we have connected again privately and have offered additional solutions. Thank you.
Sell or consign your clothes to anyone but these people. I packed up at a minimum $1k with of designer labels (black halo, frye, etc.) and shipped off my box excited to see what they came back with. I initially got a response that they received my shipment - they notified me it would take 2/3 weeks to process. That day came and went with no communication so I emailed them to check in. Over a week later they finally responded to say they were behind and gave me a date two weeks after THAT day as a new processing date. Finally, I get the email notification that my box had been processed. I logged on to find a COMPLETELY different shipment, with some of my clothing mixed in. On top of that, I only received a $63 store credit for the over 30 items they processed under my name. I was so frustrated that I didn't even reach out, took my $63 credit to purchase a purse and gave up. What a joke.
Hi Brooke,
We recommend you reach out to Customer Support for assistance with your bag. If you see items you do not recognize, please send them a message and they will be able to better assist you. Our facilities experience bag processing delays dependent on how many bags are awaiting processing in our facility. This is a good thing! It means more product will be listed on our site + donated. :)
I sent in 2 bags with Thredup. I selected the option to have them send back items they did not want to sell on their site (which is a $10.99 fee). I lost $8.00 selling items on their website while they made approximately $250.00. I was hooked on the site buying items, the prices were great, although some items weren't perfect. With a positive purchasing experience I thought the same would apply to selling. It wasn't. It is a scam. They sell your items at a reasonable price to the buyer and give you 5%, 10%, 15% usually unless you have "luxury" items. If your item sells for $9.99 you will receive $0.50. If you have 20 items to be sold and you use select the option to return items they do not want you are already in the hole $10.99, which means to break even you hope your items a) sell b) sell for more than $9.99. I did send clothes to Crossroads and was sent a check for $22.00 with returned items they did not want, therefore start there or read reviews before selling to sites. I would have been better off donating the clothes to Goodwill or another charity.
Hi Nancy,
We are sorry to hear that our Clean Out program did not meet your expectations, despite the transparency we offer customers before selling with us. It is important to note that selling with us offers the benefit of convenience as we sort, photograph, list and ship your items versus selling peer to peer. All items are priced and listed in accordance with the re sell value, taking processing cost into consideration.
Wrong brand, wrong retail price. I purchased a NWT item that had an estimated value of $71. I paid $28.99 for it and thought I was getting a deal. When the item arrived, the tag had the price of $29.99. I saved a whopping $1. The brand was also Xhilaration not Phillip Chi. I will not recommend or repurchase from this company.
Hi Mel,
We are sorry to hear you received an item not as described. A policy allows for returns on discrepant items. Simply generate a regular return and select the option for "items that arrived not as described". You will be able to leave information regarding the item and will not be charged a restocking fee. After reviewing your account info., it does not appear that you have reached out to Customer Service for assistance. Feel free to send us a message to [email protected] for further assistance. Thank you!
I sent a huge bag of clothing, all of which were items they carry. When I used their prediction generator, I should have received over $100 for my bag easily. They even state in bold print that only about 40% of items are accepted. They must have only accepted 5%... and half of these items had tags! This site is a rip off, and then they turn around and sell for a huge profit. I had a friend who said she later saw fairly uncommon items she sent in that they wouldn't accept show up for sale on the site later! I will never use this company again. For 5 minutes of effort, I could have sold TWO of the items I essentially just donated on Poshmark instead and made more than the $13 I got from ThredUP. Stop advertising yourselves as some green company doing good... you basically steal clothes from people under false pretenses.
Hi Kathy,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are sorry to hear that our Clean Out program did not meet your expectation, as we offer many tools to manage customer expectations when selling with us. I can confirm that only 8 items were rejected from Bag #B2C2T-MH22Y, for reasons including item overstock/off trend, unclean & stained. 40% of your total items were accepted for listing. Our goal is to accept as many items as we can, within our strict quality & acceptance guidelines.
Ordered a cleanout kit in April it's May now. Why don't they have a number to call? I've seen reviews where they sell your $#*! for like 75% of what it's really worth. Honestly gonna stick to Ebay and Mercari. They're like a ghetto version of Poshmark- $#*!ing annoying. And on top of that, they have so many fees its just a waste of damn time
Hi Shania,
It is important to note that our Clean Out Kits have a shipping time frame of 2-3 weeks until arrival at your location. The only fees that kits incur are a $1.99 bag fee. We are sorry to hear that you do not wish to partake in our Clean Out program.
I've been selling and buying with Thredup for 3 years now. And I have just sent in my last kit to them forever. The process has become so shady. It takes them weeks to get things processed (not a big deal) but now if something sells you have to wait almost a month before you can even collect the. 10 on the dollar that you make. Pay out have dropped dramatically. Several time I have bought from them only to have the item arrive and it is the wrong size. Most recently I purchased a new with tags pair of pants, listed on their site as a 8. When it arrived, NWT, it was a size 6 and too small for me. My choice was to either pay for shipping or pay the restocking fee for their mistake. Several items have arrived smelling like smoke or like they were stored in a basement. This use to be a fun easy way to make a little money. I never expected to get great pay outs. It is used clothing. However, for the effort and time I am spending tracking my consignment items or dealing with their screw ups, I will just go find a better place locally. It is such a shame because I really enjoy using their service, now it isnt worth the hassle.
How this service has 4 stars across all of the review sites is super shady as well.
Hi Autumn—we appreciate the time you took to share your honest thoughts. We know the recent change to our payout system (http://bit.ly/2TMXoui) is a little painful, but it is a necessary change for our business. This return window is the industry standard for consignment & we need to make sure your awesome items have a home before we pay you out for them. Anytime items are received differently than described in an order our support team can be contacted for assistance. We stand by our Polkadot Promise & always want to make things right when we've failed to accurately list items on our site!
After mailing in my items, it took over a month and a half for my items to be "evaluated," with the "ready by" date being pushed back twice. For over $300 worth of seven "accepted" items, I was given the option of getting $7 or waiting 3 months and *possibly* earning $14. The average payout for each item was a little over $0.30.
I have not bought from this company nor do I plan to, since I don't want to support these shady business tactics.
In short - donate your clothes instead. That, or Poshmark is a great option!
Thank you for sharing your input, we're sorry to hear that your overall experience selling with thredUP hasn't gone as expected. Our processing times do vary depending on volume & we aim to provide the most accurate estimates possible from within customer accounts. Ultimately we do provide detailed information in our FAQ section (http://bit.ly/2V4A6Re) as well as our blog (http://bit.ly/2G0XGUv) so customers can decide if thredUP is the best resale option for their needs. We are all about convenience at thredUP! As we cover the majority of the tasks involved with the sale of these items from start to finish, payouts are a bit lower than they would be peer to peer. If there is anything further you'd like to discuss about our Clean Out process please reach out to [email protected].
Selling: they take very little of what you send in. For instance, I sent 5 pairs of Rag and Bone jeans in great condition, they accepted one. Where did the others go? Probably to their rescue area, where they keep the cash. All bags and jewelry are final sale. They have only a couple of pics of items, and you can not return these, even if they look different in the pics. And they don't give measurements on necklaces and bracelets. My mistake!
Hi Nico—thank you for expressing your concerns. Please rest assured that we maintain very detailed records of all the items we receive in each Clean Out Kit. If you haven't already reached out to our customer support team for more info about your unaccepted items we would encourage you to do so, they can be reached at [email protected]. While handbags & jewelry items are sold as final sale we are happy to make things right when items are received not as described - our support team can always assist in these situations. We hope to hear from you soon!
Avoid at all costs. Rip you off. Lose bags. Don't respond to emails. Do yourself a favor and donate to charity. Not worth the pennies they offer you
Hi Adi—our support team typically responds to inquiries within 24-48 hours, if you haven't heard back we would advise reaching out again through one of our outlets listed at thredup.com/contact. We are always happy to provide additional information & address any questions or concerns you are having about your Clean Out.
This is basically a scam. I sent two very full bags of clothing in perfect condition, shoes, etc. Total payout thus far: 0.53 cents.
Hey Tami—we're sorry that your payouts for your items have been lower than expected. We know how disappointing it is when expectations aren't met, this is why we are very transparent about what types of items accept & how much sellers can make with thredUP. We are all about convenience for our sellers and having them do as little work as possible, which may mean you may not earn as much as you would with other resale services. If you'd like to discuss your Clean Out payout in more detail please feel welcome to reach out to us at [email protected].
I sent a very large bag of quality clothing. Some items were new with tags and name brand. Thred Up said they only used 8 items and the rest would be returned. I receive the bag today it, is only a couple of pieces. I did not receive the items with the tags back. There are multiple pieces that are missing. They have applied 8.55 as an offer for h&m, roc rival, Dkny and akira jeans. I want them to take everything off their site and send it back. All my items. I have the receipt from usps to prove the weight of the bag verses the weight it will be once everything is returned. I entered the numbers on the bag. I believe is the tracking number. I will be making a bbb report also.
Hi Alvira—we're sorry to know that your Clean Out experience didn't turn out as planned. Please rest assured that we maintain very detailed records of all the items we receive in each Clean Out Kit. If you haven't already reached out to our customer support team for assistance we would encourage you to do so, they can be reached at [email protected].
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.

Hi Stephanie,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review! We are sorry to hear you received an item not as described. Luckily, our return policy includes an option for items that arrived not as described. This assure you will not be charged a restocking fee. Hope this helps!
