ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I thought I'd try something different instead of EBay. I tried ThredUp and Poshmark. Wow. The experience with ThredUp as a seller borderlines theft, I swear. I did a cleanout kit. On top of paying those fees, I also paid the $10.99 to get my items returned that didn't sell, and I sent 6 items. ALL of the items were like new and nice pieces like an Eileen Fisher wool dress, a Worth silk/linen blend blazer and pants, etc. 5 pieces sold. I was shocked at how much they charged for them compared to what my take was.
After everything was tallied, My 'haul' came to under $12. AND the $10.99 to return my item came out of that amount. Really? Then they charge you $5.99 to ship it back to you! The $10.99 is some kind of 'fee' for nothing. So my big takeaway was 80 cents. And they don't 'credit' you what they owe you against what you owe them. So I had to pay them, and then they paid me. AND to add the cherry on top, they charged me the PayPal 2% fee! I was so sure this was in error, I opened a chat. Nope. That's how it works. They end up with all the money, and you end up with nothing. The prices they charged buyers was crazy!
I'm going back to eBay! So very glad I didn't ship a lot more of my items that I'm selling. A total waste of time. How in the heck do they stay in business?
Thredup has upheld no part of their responsibility to me. My order was not processed in the time they claimed it would be, they do not pay what their website claims, their communication is horrible and they are now holding my items hostage and will not return them to me.
Hi Audrey—thanks for your input. Our processing time for orders is typically 1-2 business days, during times of high order volume processing can be a bit delayed. Our payouts will always reflect our current payout structure (https://bit.ly/2rjNhPx). We have sent you a private message to discuss your Clean Out in more detail.
I ordered several items, and first they went to a previous address (from over 3yrs ago), and had to be sent back and re-shipped to my current address. Maybe that was my fault for not checking all my info carefully beforehand, but it was disappointing.
Then I got the order and the quality on a few of the items was very disappointing as well. Some items were nice. So I tried to return the one's that I wasn't happy with, and there was an issue with that, and I spent more time trying to get ahold of customer service so they could fix the glitch.
In the meantime I ordered a clean out bag, thinking that would be a neat way to clean out my closet of nicer stuff. It came quickly, and I filled it and sent it back with some nice stuff including Michael Kors, etc. It's been almost a month and I have heard nothing back yet. It apparently takes a LONG time to process. And based on the reviews, I don't expect they will offer me squat for it. Next time I'll just take it to the local thrift store or consignment store or sell it on ebay.
And my return still hasn't been processed. Things at ThredUp move very slowly apparently.
Thank you for your review Heather and we're sorry for the troubles and frustrations you've experienced. We are showing your Clean Out bag has processed as of 4/25/19. Please visit your account to review further.
They have great items at great prices. Their shipping is quick. The customer service is wonderful!
Thanks for the support, Judy! We're really excited to hear that you've enjoyed shopping with us.
Similar to the many recent reviews, I turned in a 20 LB bag with designer brands and even some never worn items only to have a few items (which i thought for sure were rejects) accepted. I actually lost money because I paid $16 to expedite the bag only to receive $13. I tried to see if I could add return assurance after the fact (my own fault i didn't in the first place) and they it wasn't possible
Hi Audrey—thank you for sharing your experience, we are sorry to hear that it did not meet your expectations. Please know that it does not benefit thredUP to reject items, we are in the business of selling second clothes & want to accept as many items as possible from Clean Out Kits. With that in mind, we do have strict acceptance & quality standards that we uphold and we are not able to accept everything that sellers send into us. If you would like to review the results of your Clean Out in more detail please feel free to email us at [email protected].
The clothing reeked so heavily of performed laundry detergent that I couldn't try it on, I got a headache just opening the box. Wasn't much of a loss because they completely ignored my style and color preferences. I made this purchase because I'm interested in being eco-conscious so clothing doused in chemical products doesn't fit the bill. Also very inconsiderate of them to use products that cause medical problems for people with asthma, chemicals sensitivities, and female reproductive systems.
Hi Jackie—we're truly sorry to hear that you had this experience. We have strict quality and acceptance standards that we always try our best to uphold, we often reject items from Clean Out Kits for having strong odors. If you need any assistance with returning your items please reach out to [email protected]. If you would like to provide your stylist with feedback for future Goody Boxes this can be done from within your account. Thank you.
I literally gave them thousands of dollars worth of clothes for huge boxes shoes never worn and I got a total of $45 never again
I purchased some athletic shorts. Per the description they were WOMENS size large champion shorts. I received size large in GIRLS... and it's blatantly obvious it's a girls
Size. The waist itself is 11 inches. The large romper I bought had rotted elastic at the top and was totally stretched out. It costs 8.99 to ship back to them regardless that I've already paid 5.99 for shipping to even receive the items. I'm super disappointed, upset that I wasted money, and will not shop here again or recommend them. I gave them a
Chance because I'd heard good things. My items were straight up the opposite of what was described and I feel ripped off. No, I'm not going to pay for shipping again for their mistakes and false descriptions. I'll give the shorts to my niece, maybe they will fit her and the romper goes in the trash.
Hi there—thank you for bringing this to our attention. We're sorry to know that you received an item that was not as described. It is always our hope to list items as accurately as possible and our support team is happy to assist when things don't go according to plan. You can always reach out via thredup.com/contact in these situations & an agent will work with you in reaching a resolution. We have sent you a private message regarding your purchase and look forward to chatting further over there.
ThredUP is rip off. I would not recommend. They gave me. 50 cents for a lot of the brand name tops I sent in. THEY are making a killing!
Hi Deborah,
Our hope is to maintain clear payout expectations for our customers/sellers, by providing all payout information via an accessible chart --> https://thredup.helpshift.com/a/thredup/?s=selling&f=how-much-will-i-earn-for-my-clothing&l=en&p=web
It is important to note that our Clean Out program offers convenience while we process, photograph, list, sell & ship items for you versus the work involved in peer to peer selling.
I ordered from them 5 times, and 3 times the items were not as described. One was wildly off in sizing. One item was described as jeans but was sweatpants, and another wasn't new with tagsit was wrinkled, tagless, and smelled like body odor. I was only given a partial refund. Plus, I placed 2 separate orders (and paid separate shipping) and they were shipped together. I asked about this and the customer service person said it was "passive bundling". So, they'll charge you double but ship it in one box. The customer service woman also insinuated that I was too stupid to understand what she was saying.
Hi Lisa,
When you place multiple small orders, we create a bundle for your to ensure we ship your items to you in the most convenient way possible (& reduce packaging waste.) The Customer Service agent that assist you, was clearly describing the bundle & return process, rather than insinuating anything.
A friend at work told me she uses threadUp so I tried it. I sent a perfect batch of clothing-Joie sweaters, two Tory Burch dresses, Jcrew skirts, a silk Rebecca Taylor blouse and a DVF dress, etc. Probably 500.00 worth of clothes AT resale. I was informed I only made $39.00. The site "encourages" you to buy back instead of cash in, so I bought a Joie top for $29.00 which just arrived in horrible condition. They are stealing money. AVOID!
Hi Patricia,
Our Clean Out payout structure and options are made very accessible for seller's who get to decide which method of payment they wish to receive. We offer a multitude of options including Paypal transfers, Visa prepaid cards as well as store credit. If you ever experience issues with an order you receive, we recommend reaching out to Customer Service for direct assistance with an array of order issues. We can review your bag for you and provide processing details, if you reach out via [email protected].
Some items were not correct size. Petite medium was cashmere sweater that was washed and shrunk! Shorts weren't right.
Hi Patricia,
Thanks for taking the time to leave a review. It is important to note that the nature of thrift contribute to the variance in clothing sizes due to general wear. If you are unsatisfied with an item and it arrives not as describe, you can always generate a return via your Order History page. You will not be charged the restocking fee on items that arrive not as described on the website. For further assistance, please reach out to [email protected].
I was excited to try this - thought it fit in with my goal of havving small footprint- however the quality is shabby and everything thus far that I have received from the company smells like cigarette smoke covered up poorly with some god awful scent. Why anyone would send clothes reeking of smoke- especially childrens clothes- beyond me.
No bueno- I do not recommend. We will see if returning items is a nightmare. Disappointed.
Hi Anne—we're truly sorry to hear that you had this experience. We have strict quality and acceptance standards that we always try our best to uphold, we often reject items from Clean Out Kits for having strong odors. If you need any assistance with returning your items please reach out to [email protected]. Thank you.
The payout for designer items is robbery. They only give you 5% of items sold. I have used this service many times and finally realized that they are stealing our money and we are letting them. I could sell everything I sent to them on Ebay for $. 99 each and still make more money than they are giving me. STOP sending them stuff!
Hi Kristen,
Our hope is to always manage expectations initially around what you can make with us. We provide the payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) and display our payout structure (https://bit.ly/2rjNhPx) to allow customers, such as yourself, to get a better idea of how much you will earn. We are sorry to hear that our program did not meet your expectations. Our goal is to offer convenience of selling without the hassle of listing, pricing, photographing, selling and shipping your items in peer to peer sales.
Well two of my three items sold, for a total of 92 cents. I have the option to cash out but using either Paypal or a Visa gift card requires at least $1, and using Stripe would only yield 66 cents. The one shirt that did not sell has "expired" as I was not informed that consignments are posted for only 84 days. It will now be destroyed (a. K. a., "recycled") soon unless I request it back - for a shipping fee of $6 which is almost more than the consignment price. I don't want it back but I sent it in to be used, not destroyed. I could have lowered the price if I'd known I had only a limited time to sell it, and my cash out total would have been more than $1.
So in the end, I sent in a box full of quality items (see original post below), most of which were rejected due to issues that were fixable if they were even real (Ever hear of a washing machine? Button replacement?), and even for those things that were accepted I will receive so little that it's barely worth claiming. A box full of clothing with lots of wear left, and nothing to show for it.
Hi Terry,
Thanks for reaching out. We are sorry to hear that our Clean Out program did not meet your expectations. We do our best to provide full transparency about our policies, what we expect, and our reasons for item acceptability. We want to accept 100% of what people send us, but must adhere to our strict quality standards to ensure shoppers are receiving like-new items. Please be assured that our processors never intentionally reject items from a Clean Out Bag with the intention of selling them through our Rescues shop.
We do not guarantee the acceptance of all items sent to us. Your items from bag #B2Q4D-WM4AT were rejected and marked "unclean/stained" as well as "rejected for overstock".
I sent in a box full of clothing in good condition according to the ThredUp rules, but only 3 items were accepted - two big-box tees and a badly piled sweater that I expected to be rejected. The rest were items of classic styling and good construction, most of them still in like-new condition. I didn't expect to make much money (as obviously their prices are already low and they have to make a profit) but I am dismayed that quality pieces were sent to be "recycled" because... they weren't this week's style? The brands (e.g., Lands' End, Carhaart, Coldwater Creek) weren't up to snuff? Different people have different tastes, yet ThredUp apparently gets to decide what people should want. I suppose the reason I've never bought anything on this site is that the clothing I might like (i. E., basic, classic) was rejected before I could even see it.
I sent a large bag of name brand clothes for resale. I was told that I earned about 1% of the actual amount that thredup received. I asked for money install. I received a prepaid visa card that I could not activate. If you do not care to receive any compensation for your items then do business with them. Otherwise, do not.
I purchased over $400 worth of items and financed them through Affirm. Inaccurate website descriptions, hardly any items fit. I think I kept a couple of items, but returned about 10 items and requested to be refunded through Affirm. After the return was sent back, they only refunded $91.88... When I questioned them their customer service i was given the run around and was told that they deduct shipping and taxes and blah blah blah. They actually charge their customers to ship returns back to them. And it does not state this anywhere on their site that I saw. They then accused me of not sending all the items back, which I have proof that I did. Long story short they kept giving me the run around and refused to refund me any additional money. So now I am still out like $380! I will NEVER do business with Thredup EVER AGAIN! STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY THEY WILL ROB YOU BLIND!
Hi Chelsea,
We do not refund the original cost of shipping on orders that are returned to us. This is clearly stated in the Return Policy on our website --> https://bit.ly/2SyxEND
Our Customer Service agents base information off of the tracking #, reference #s and Fedex/USPS information linked to your Orders via your account. If you would like to further review this information, please reach out to our Customer Service via [email protected]. Thank you.
ThredUp accepted 10 of my items, for which I will receive at the most $15. Five of those items were brand name and new with tags, and I'm getting a buck and change for them? I also included an $80 pair of pumps that had only been worn 4x and a pair of boots that were the same, and I got nothing for them. My guess is some employee at ThredUp is wearing my shoes. Please... you'll get more for your items if you donate them and at least you'll feel good about the cause.
Hi Katherine,
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. We are sorry to hear that our Clean Out program did not meet your expectations. Our hope is to always manage expectations initially around what you can make with us. For $61 bucks I got torn, faded crap the Goodwill would have thrown out! What a scam! The one dress I thought I could salvage was two sizes too small! NEVER AGAIN! I can do better than this on Ebay or Poshmark. What I can't understand is why they have so many good reviews... I call B. S! They can keep their fancy packaging and send me some decent clothes!
Hi Diana. Thanks for the review. We're not showing you were in contact with our customer service team regarding this order. Please reach out if you received items that did not match their listings. That is something our team would like to look into further. We're sorry for any disappointment and we look forward to hearing from you.
I've now made several designer purchases from ThredUp that were listed as the designer (and this more $$) and what I actually received was the factory/low end brand of that designer. When I reached out to complain, their solution was that I could pay $9 to return the item. I'm not paying for their mistakes. Will never shop here again.
Hi Kelly—it is always our goal to list items as accurately as possible on our site. If you received an item that was not as described we are happy to make things right, this is a part of our Polkadot Promise. We have followed up with you in a private message to investigate further.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.

Hi Jill—thank you for giving us a shot, we are sorry to hear that your earnings weren't what you were hoping for.
