thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I had a positive experience to start with (sent a clean out kit and bought some items) and I like the concept, so especially with Pandemic shut downs sent multiple clean out kits as part of getting ready to move cross country. They arrived at disparate processing centers at variable times, however at this point all of them are marked as delivered by carrier (Fed Ex tracking) by early June. ThredUp acknowledged receiving 3/4 kits on their site (there's an MIA kit that they acknowledged receiving when I contacted customer service, however never corrected on their tracker). NONE of the kits have been processed and while I've received generic form-letter emails apologizing and acknowledging the delay, the same emails say that rather than staff their current centers, they are opening two brand new centers. I'm assured they'll get around to opening my kit sometime…maybe…Their form letter response and apparent business plan don't address the issue current customers face. Expanding the brick and mortar portion of your business while not providing solid service to current customers seems a poor model at best. I will hope for the best, however I've now put ThredUp on my AVOID list.

Missing boxes
August 20, 2022

I made a large order and it was shipped in 3 separate boxes. Out of the 3 boxes I only received 1 box. The other two boxes I never received, and I did NOT get my money back for both boxes.

Terrible return policy
August 17, 2022

I have made multiple purchases from this company, and for the most part it has been good. The last purchase that I made, nothing fit. My size has not changed but all the items I ordered seem to have come in midget size. I go to do a return, and it is completely unreasonable. Even If I pay my own postage for the return, they are still deducting 1.99 per item and charging a restocking fee. Please read the return policy BEFORE buying anything from this company or you will be stuck with crap you can't wear. I feel completely ripped off. I will not shop with them again. I also have to backtrack and let the many people that I have recommended this business to, know that it's a rip off.

I purchased four items several weeks ago and- after verifying on the ThredUp site that they primarily ship with USPS and have ZERO notations or warning about shipping to p. O. boxes- checked out and chose my post office box as the shipment destination. Ten days later, I get a postcard from FedEx Ground saying that they do not deliver to p. O. boxes and asking me to contact them. I do, and I'm told that only the shipper can change a shipping address (to my home address). I try to find an actual phone number for ThredUp and am left having to use the Chat function instead. The person I chatted with said that they cannot change the shipping address because it's "not a part of their process/system." I explained that I indicated my p. O. box AFTER verifying on their site that my package would be shipped USPS and that they shipped it FedEx ground all the while knowing FedEx ground doesn't deliver to P. O. boxes.
See this link for their shipping info: https://help.thredup.com/en_us/order-shipping-and-delivery-methods-rk71eLETN

So. I'm told that now my package sits at a local Fedex ground office where it will be returned to ThredUp, inventory after ten days and I will get a refund. Why in the world would one spend time looking for items on their site when there's a good chance you'll never actually be able to wear them once you find and pay for them? Horrible "customer service," and a ridiculous waste of time, really.

Missing Coach boots!
August 14, 2022

So disappointed with ThredUP! Sent various items in - most name brands (Banana Republic, Coach, Fable, etc). Out of 2 boxes that I sent 4 of the items that were posted were Amazon sweaters, and a few American Eagle items. What happened to my Coach rain boots and Banana Republic dresses that were in really good condition? They were never listed in the site. I reached out and got a response from ThredUP that I should have used their policy of having items returned to me that they didn't post on the site. My bad but really? Using Poshmark from now on!

I purchased dresses on 8/8 for a wedding I'm attending on the 20th. Based off the quoted time frame of 3-6 shipping days I figured I would have plenty of time. What they failed to mention is that the items are in different locations in the US, and would need to be shipped to a central location before being sent to me. When I asked about the reason, it was stated that it saves money and packaging. Which is BS, because sending it twice is not less of anything. Also when I try to communicate, I'm only given a chat or email option, with the chat people I get conflicting, or made up answers, not sure what the email side looks like, tho I'm not hopeful. If they had made the shipping craziness clear, I would have gladly paid individual shipping so I could get the items in the time I needed them. Now I'm without something to wear, my time is being consumed trying to sort this mess, and my frustration level only raises with every attempt to communicate with this company.

BUYERS BEWARE!
I bought two plaid Rails shirts, one had a large hole in the sleeve and one was fine. I also bought a coach purse and the crossbody strap looked shredded. All items said they are lightly used with little to no signs a wear. TOTAL BS, my friends. Two out of three items were damaged. You can't get ahold of a customer service rep to save your life. And the coach purse I bought was a final sale... of f*#$ing course. I spend 99 dollars on three items, and only one was in decent condition. I'm keeping it all, I can fix the shirt, and I snipped the excess threads that were coming off the strap... but all in all I believe whole heartedly that... THRED UP, YOU SUCK. And I will never make another purchase from you all again. I thought that thrifting online would be a better experience. ****12 point inspectiong check my butt.***

Very deceiving
August 3, 2022

I so wanted to be a fan so bad helping the environment, good for the buyer, and good for the seller I thought. Customer service was on point every time. First of all I will have to say that only a small percentage of the clothes came in the condition.as described. So, then you have to go through the confusing, convoluted, time consuming process of returns. There are all these tricks to make sure you keep your money in credit. Most of the clothes that I'd fall in love with and fit me perfectly well it was a facade. I was always so excited and hopeful. Once I was committed by keeping them I'd try on the clothes again. I'd feel excited after ordering oh what a good deal I got I'd think. I'd rave about the quality and the way they fit fantastic. Then I'd wear them ONE time and they would stretch out beyond belief AS I WORE THEM. Also, often times I hadn't realized how bad the fabric was worn to the point of transparency until I was already committed. Well, guess what I am then both disappointed and out a lot of cash. I turn around have to donate them to a thrift store. We are talking about hundreds of dollars here. I really don't know why I kept doing it over and over again I even complained numerous times. Then I'd have credit from returns and I was right back in the never ending loop. I am still sitting on some credit and I don't even want to use it. I was giving them good reviews because I've been in denial. I am finally seeing it for what it is a scam. I have blown away a lot of money and time and really have nothing to show for it literally. I have included a photo of my latest disappointment. Unfortunately, it keeps flipping the photo on it's side.

I've written a previous negative review on thredUP here before. But because there aren't any choices that make cleaning out your closet as easy as throwing it in a bag, and dropping off at post office - I decided to send them two more bags of shoes after I retired …some of which I had never even worn, some wear leather boots I bought in Nashville, some were strappy name brand sandals, some were leather heels. All were in great shape as thredUP rightfully expects them to be. And I had great success selling shoes with them before ( yes, I freely admit I buy way too many shoes - which is also why they were in great shape - I hardly used them as I had so many).
I even paid for expedited handling for my two bags of roughly 40 pairs of shoes / boots.
So I was absolutely shocked and devastated when they accepted ONE pair of shoes from one bag and NONE from the other.
When I questioned Customer Service, the response was "the 10 pieces of clothing I sent in were soiled, old and not designer brands " - and that's why they didn't accept any more than one pair of shoes (?!))
I explained that I didn't send in ANY clothes- it was all quality shoes and boots. To make a long story short we went round and round with absolutely no resolution and I am out a whole lot of money. I sincerely wish I would've taken pictures of my items or not sent in as many as I did so I wouldn't of had as great of a loss.
But you know how it goes when you're set on cleaning out a closet and those ThredUP bags are so big.
So what happened to my shoes and boots? Your guess is probably exactly what I'm thinking.
At any rate, I really have no idea… but the worst of this long story, is neither does ThredUP.
Do yourself a favor and learn from my loss …. Go through the longer more involved processes with ANY OTHER resale company and run, don't walk from THREDUP. Even if your barefoot like I am.

Complete screwup
July 22, 2022

I ordered an e-gift card for my bestie for her birthday and it never got there. They claimed to have sent it twice. After two chats with customer support and 3 days, I gave up and asked for a refund. We'll see if THAT shows up.

Scam
July 22, 2022

Do not use this Company. I sent in twenty items. Several new with tags. They only accepted 10 items to sell but only gave me back 3 items. Their response was that they could sell the other items but I won't be receiving a payment for them because the pay out wouldn't be cost effective for them. Had I known this, I never would have tried this service.

For a thrifting website, ThredUp is extremely overpriced. Some of the clothing they sell can be found on the original company's' websites for the same price. Their shipping cost is also ridiculous and they use a lot of false advertising. For example, their website always claims that "everything" is on sale yet a tremendous amount of brands are not, only the items that never sell. Furthermore, a lot of the clothing is falsely described. I have bought a couple of T shirts claiming they were in good condition with no mention of any flaws. When I received the items, I noticed a couple of holes and the stitching coming apart which was never mentioned in the description. Unless you're buying clothing that is labeled new with tags, I would not shop here. I would check out other thrifting apps like Mercari where you can actually score good deals, not pay an insane amount for shipping, and support small businesses/sellers.

Warning, do not buy from here!
July 21, 2022

I wish I would've read these reviews before I decided to buy from here. I bought my items a while ago. I have emailed two different people from this company with no response. So I have felt more and more offended by this company. I am a middle class citizen and I wanted to have some nice brand names even if used. I picked items from the description with tags and excellent almost new condition. What I received was an insult for over $300 I received some Coach booties that actually fit that description. As for the rest of the items,,, the pictures will tell what I received. I did not expect brand new items, I know this is 2nd hand items, but I also did not expect this. The black shoes I've never used. This is how they came. As for the gold shoes, I wore one time. The coat I bought, under same description had a button that was literally hanging from a thread and the smell was horrible. If you have the money to just throw away, I recommend that you risk buying from this site. If you do not have the money, I highly recommend against buying from this website.

Only okay— not always worth it
July 21, 2022

I admire the platform of recycling, and I have found some great pieces on this site after using it for a few years. It works best when you know exactly what you're looking for in terms of brand, fit, and material.
Unfortunately, it is not always worth it to buy from them. They often mis-advertise the condition of their clothing. Many items I've received listed as "like new condition" come stretched out and pilled. They also lack detail in product description; I've returned many items that had unspecified glitter/shiny elements that aren't mentioned on the website. The return process is a rip-off. Even if they incorrectly described an item you have to pay a $1.99 return fee per item + $9 shipping. It's just not worth it.
I've also tried the selling process on their website. I've sold 4 items in like new condition from Forever 21, Loft, Banana Republic, and FRAME and I've earned. 91¢. So you can draw your own conclusions from that.

11/24 I wanted to update and lower my rating. The reason for the lower score is due to my experience as a seller. I sent in 4 bags of designer items and a lot of my pieces disappeared. It seemed the high end items never made it to listed. They have zero tracking and I really made no money.

Buying issues I experienced were items that were listed with the wrong designer. Example I received Old Navy jeans that were listed as Agolde. Also received many stained and damaged items. In all cases the issues were resolved with a refund. However the communication was one way. I never received any response but saw the refund on my credit card statement.

Original Review:
This is a thrift store. I believe they have an ap but I have only used the website. Each items condition is listed as either; showing wear, good or excellent. If an item is listed as excellent and arrives with pilling or defective zipper or ripped hem (I have received all) they do not charged the $2 per item restocking fee. I did pay to ship back. However they do not refund but give you a credit instead. But do not let that discourage you! I have received some lovely designer pieces including bags and boots. Know your measurements and check items measurements carefully. Know your brands and read the fabric content. Look very carefully at the photos before you buy. They do ship quickly and packing has improved. I try everything on immediately. Inspect for damage, then I wash on delicate or hand wash cycle. I had a cotton dress fall apart at the seams, I sent it back and received a credit. But you must send back in 14 days!

I have ordered from Thred Up a few times and have never been satisfied. I only order black pants for work. Every pants i receive i try to make sure it says excellent or good condition. Most of the pants I have received have been in poor condition. Pants were very faded not even black anymore, severely worn and should not have been resold to anyone, one pants was even blue and not black. I know the prices are cheaper but I just want what is advertised when I purchase an item.

After placing a fairly large order, I couldn't understand why I kept getting emails about 'adding to my bundle before it shipped.' Turns out, my order will not even ship until THREE WEEKS after I placed the order, meaning it will arrive about a month after I placed the order.

Their customer service "will get back to you in four days", the website (if you need to cancel or return) is a mess, their online 'chat assistant' is terrible---bad interface, and NOT HELPFUL.
But they'll take your cash right away.

How 'bout being upfront about how long your shipping takes? Like put it on the checkout page. Then people can decide if they want to wait A MONTH to get their order.

There are better online thrift sites; DO NOT use thredUp.

UPDATE: I received my items, very neatly packaged, on July 8 (I ordered on June 22). While I was happy with the condition of the package, if you're offering people free shipping but it will take two-to-three weeks, again, just let them know on the checkout page so they can choose.
