I have used the realreal for four years and was satisfied. Recently however, I have had a steady stream of bad experiences, both with purchasing and consigning. My most recent purchase was a final exam of sorts. The previous order had various errors, so I had to do an exchange due to inaccurate descriptions. I was refunded and given a $25 credit in addition. I decided to give TRR one last chance. I placed the order, which not only showed up late, but also included one piece that had marks on it, and worse yet, was wadded up like a donation to Goodwill.
I work in luxury retail and know that the service I have received from TRR if far from luxury. TRR may be a consignor of luxury items, but are a far cry from a luxury company.
I love the real real but I don't like the new checkout "bag"where it doesn't keep as many items that I looked at for as long as it use to and I can't see all of the items unless I take items out. I use to keep things in for future purchases and now I can't do that in the same way.
Hi Sarah, thank you for sharing feedback on your shipping experience with us. Please note that once an item is added to your cart, you have 20 minutes to complete your purchase before the item is released to other shoppers on the site. If you're looking to save items for future purchase, try adding them to your obsessions list. Happy to answer any questions you have, just reach out!
Items are too expensive for what they are, are described inaccurately (ie long sleeve tee, instead of sweatshirt, etc). Not enough items on the site compared to other sites such as posh or Grailed, and there's no opportunity to negotiate price.
Hi Brandon, we appreciate you sharing feedback on your shopping experience with us.
I was sent a wrong item and the item I ordered still hasn't been located! I have written customer service several times and after a few messages back and forth - no further replies!
Hi Tiffany, we're sorry our team has not gotten back to you yet regarding the missing item from your order. Please reach out to us again at [email protected] with your order details so we can help right away.
I love shopping second hand cuz... do we really need more clothing in the world? And to be able to try out designers at great prices is wonderful!
Thank you for partnering with us to create a more sustainable future, Leslie. We can't wait to shop with you again soon!
I had signed up for RTR with the understanding that I could swap items earlier than before. The functionality wasn't working; the rep may have fixed that, I'm not really sure yet. But I'd also expressed disappointment that I was falsely sold a feature, and it had led to me missing outfits for planned events. (For example, I wanted this latest jacket to arrive before I left for a flight on Sunday but because the return early functionality wasn't working, it won't arrive until after I get back from my trip almost 2 weeks later.) The response fully ignored my questions. Pasted below for reference.
-----
My initial email: "... I was banking on this feature all month since I had a lot of events, and not being able to swap the shipments as quickly as promised has delayed some of my outfit plans. Is there any way to get a discount on the month? Or because I'm already trying out RTR on a discounted plan, could I add a third month at the $99/month rate?..."
Response: "We apologize for the delay in our response, and we appreciate your patience. We're happy to see another stylist has assisted you. Let us know if you have any other questions - we'd be happy to help! Kala B"
Just love on the service the products and the price that affordable
This site is one of the biggest second-hand luxury e-commerce sites in America, they have a huge selection of luxury goods. But if you try to consign with them and sell your stuff, they take your stuff, take photos, create the listings, and will post incorrect details about your products, creating poor sales for you. It's absolutely shameful how poor their product detail entry is, it seems like every single product page has one or more errors.
Hi Ashley, we're sorry your consigning experience with us was less than positive and we'd like to understand more so we can help. Please reach out to our team on social media with your consignor details so we can take a look into your account.
I ordered a pair of Common projects men suede slip ons. The product description said there was no size listed on the shoe but their measurements said it was 11.5
I received the shoes and they are nowhere near 11.5. I was going to return them but a friend who wears a 9 could fit and them and I gave the shoes to them.
Hi Jason, we're sorry to hear this was not what you were expecting when you received your order. We're always more than happy to answer any questions you have before completing your purchase, just DM us on social media. Please reach out to us if there is anything more we can do.
Returned a damaged dress. I was not refunded for shipping either way as I'd been promised.
Hi Cat, we'd be more than happy to help you with this request. Please reach out to our team at [email protected] with your order details so we process this credit for you.
I love shopping at RealReal, except for when I"m looking for dark colored clothes. The lighting/photography of dark colored items is waaaaay too dark that you barely see any detail. The screen has to be set to the brightest setting to even see any hint of fabric or detailing.
Hi Lourdes, thank you for taking the time to share this feedback with us. If you ever have any questions about a specific item, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team so we can help.
My last order was three items. Two Lafayette dresses and a P Sempione coat. One of the Lafayette dresses went straight to Goodwill, sizing listed was way off, like two sizes off. I have slender neck and arms and thought even a 4th grader might have problems zipping it. Interestingly the size 4 (Im a 6-8) fit like a charm. I would have considered getting the weird dress altered to a skirt but omg, the fabric was a stiff puffy material like you find in cheap upholstery. Not what I expect from the brand. Off to the thrift store where maybe some street wear design student can cut it up and make some funky thing. Otherwise it's unwearable. No signs anyone ever did…and no wonder!
Hi Tatiana, we're so sorry to hear the item you received was not what you expected. Please reach out to our team at [email protected] with your order details so we can help.
I Purchased A Shoulder Bag On September The 7th Of 2023. After Receiving It I Realized That It Was Too Heavy And Too Large So I Decided To Consign It But They Declined Consigning It Saying That It Was Discolored. Well I Know That I Never Used It And Sent It Back To Them Just After Receiving It, And It Is Still September. This Situation Is Very Upsetting To Me Because I Buy All Of My Items From Them Where They Make Money From Me But They Also Make Money From My Consignments. There Is Something Terribly Wrong With This Situation!
Hi Evelyn, we're sorry you haven't heard back from our team regarding your consignment. Please send us a DM on social media with your email address and consignor details so we can help.
This order was about the 4th or 5th one in which I received items described as "pristine" and even " new with tags" that were not only visibly worn but I would say "hammered". During the pandemic they've been letting sellers do virtual consignments and I've noticed pictures that even show worn corners on bags and wear through to lower layers of the soles of shoes described with "no visible signs of wear". I ordered a $2200+ Goyard duffle "new with tags" and well, it had the tags inside it but you could even see a dark mark on the corner on the website (which I was willing to let go for the price but still irked that the item was clearly not "pristine") and when I received it, all 4 corners were crushed with rubbing and the feet on the bottom were scratched through to the different colored base metal. Ebay has such a bad rep but honestly, sellers there show double and triple the number of pictures, showing all sides and insides and close-ups of items such that if they lie you can at least tell. I've received several bags now from TRR described as pristine and they are soft and/or worn from use, metal hardware scratched and/or rubbed off and worse, fine jewelry costing multiple $1000's with scratched and nicked stones, sapphires with color zoning so bad you'd be embarrassed to wear it and stones called sapphires that are clearly tanzanites. You can at least return misdecribed or misrepresented jewelry (for a fee) but their designer bags are final sale. This didn't used to be this way when I started buying 2 years ago from this site because they used to see stuff in person. They only show 4 photos or so, so many times you're purchasing pretty blind. They really need to go back to in-person consigning because their quality is pretty hit and miss now.
Hi Erica, we truly appreciate you taking the time to provide us with this feedback and we're sorry to hear of your experience with us. We always promise to make it right if an item you purchase from us doesn’t match the description on our site, handbags included. Please reach out to our team on social media if there is anything more we can do to help.
It's hard to get a full feel of the product when the zooming in feature only allows a small swatch at a time. Also, product seems out of scale w/ the model.
Hi V L, thank you for sharing this feedback with us. Our team is always more than happy to help answer any questions you have about an item listed on our site, just send us a DM!
I love shopping the real real, as I am able to access designers that are hard to find, even living in a city as large as Los Angeles. I love the treasure hunt and having so many wonderful, quality options at my finger tips. Returns are always easy and I feel confident ordering multiple options to try on at home.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us, Maya. We can't wait to shop with you again soon!
You can find some real gems if you search carefully. The designer items are usually in great condition amd the condition is listed. The prices can go to high to deals on sale. They are good about returns.
Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review, Jan. We can't wait to see what gem you find next!
Was sold a fake Hermes bag, and another Hermes bag which was labeled "pristine" which arrived with notable damage, among other issues. TRR was professional, caring and responsible in addressing the issue but it doesn't take away from the fact their authentication process is impaired. Their grading process is also impaired, labeling items as pristine which are not pristine, and not including enough photos of key areas to illustrate genuine wear.
Hi Carrie, we're truly sorry for your experience with us. We will always work with our customers if they have concerns about their purchase. Please email us at [email protected] or DM us (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) your order number and we'll sort this our for you ASAP.

Hi Pilar, thank you for sharing feedback on your shopping experience with us. We can't wait to shop with you again soon!
Answer: Do not buy from them! Their return/refund policy is skewed to their benefit. In my case, I bought a Louis Vuitton bag and when it was received it was not in the condition advertised or the photos did not highlight the real wear of the bag and they refused to make a refund or credit. It's their lost because I have since bought many bags on Ebay which offers guarantee of refund should item be faulty or misrepresented. Also, on Ebay you can judge by seller feedback whether the seller is reputable and PRICES are so much less than on the REAL REAL. Their name should be changed to the REAL GREED!
Answer: Hi Samantha. The RealReal does sometimes ask for additional information from customers for a one time security check. Most times, this is for new customers who have never shopped with us before, orders with vastly different billing and shipping information, or are international customers with unverified credit cards. We will ask for some sensitive and personal information for the purposes of verifying the identity of the purchaser but we will not ask for a Social Security Number. Was your father attempting to complete his purchase via Affirm? Affirm is a third party company we work with that offers financing on purchases. If your father was attempting to complete a purchase via Affirm, they do require a SSN for a soft credit check for the loan approval and repayment options. As Affirm is a third party, we do not have access to any of that information so it is secure with Affirm. Of course, no one is required to use Affirm for check out, rather it's just another payment option we offer. Please feel free to reach out to us if this does not answer your questions or if you feel that the explanations provided were not applicable to your situation. You can reach out to our Customer Service Department at (855) 435 5893 from 8am to 5pm (PST). If you would like to speak to a supervisor directly, please feel free to ask for Caitlin from our NJ office. She is available from 9am to 6pm (EST) and of course you can reach us via email at: [email protected].
Answer: If you like to be frustrated, disappointed and want to take a few years off your life, then yes consign with the real real.
Answer: I do NOT recommend selling through TRR. Read all seller reviews. This a speed selling co trying to cash in on a quick commission. The prices they assign are RIDICULOULOUS at best. They are not there to get you a good price but a fast buck for themselves. They priced a brand new prada bag with a label on at $625. Minus 20% permanent discount, 60% of that, I receive a whopping $312. After 10 days wait of processing and seeing the prices assigned I pulled my items. I was shocked and even more upset. I rather give the cloths to charity or sell them myself. I think it is insiders who buy the best items at dirt cheap prices they assign themselves. As a buyer just today I receive a wrong item. They were going to research the problem and find the item I purchased, a coat. They sent me a dirty silk top... This is after waiting for 10 days to get the wrong item. This co is just very bad. Customer service is spotty. Some reps are just dreadful. They sound like this is a summer gig and they got no training, you can never speak to a supervisor, none is ever available, Read the reviews and decide if you still want to use this co. If you do, you will be disappointed,
Answer: Hello, We are sorry to hear of your concerns. If you can please send us your order number or email address we will happily research this further.
Answer: Hi Frank, Thank you for reaching out. We apologize you have seen more negative than positive reviews. We would be pleased to advise you on our consignment process and share a little more insight about the RealReal.
Answer: I don't work for The Real Real I am just a satisfied customer, very satisfied! I see all the complaints, and just shake my head. Knowing how people can be, and also knowing the complainers are the ones who write letters, I can only assume they are "out of touch with reality", or POSSIBLY are competitors who are just being difficult to try and hurt the site. Remember, anyone can write anything, that does not mean it is true, nor are ALL the facts being presented! As for me, I am willing to show, and prove who I am, and the great products and service I received.
Answer: This happened to me only one time, and I have sold quite a few items with them. As soon as I received the quote for a pair of earrings. I contacted them immediately and said I felt the price was to low due to various reasons, and they got back to me the next day with an adjusted price. I have never experienced what you are describing above as a bait and switch scenario, and I always check the similar or same items they are selling. I would just call them and ask for the details as to why the other item is higher. Sorry you had a bad experience!
Answer: File a complaint with the US Customs office in your area and your state's attorney general. Also for many types of goods, they will destroy the counterfeit goods and give you a letter stating they have done so. This is ironclad proof for the bank dispute.
Answer: I have returned things with no hassle at all.
