StudentUniverse Reviews Summary

StudentUniverse generally enjoys a positive reputation for providing affordable travel options, particularly for students and young travelers. Customers frequently commend the competitive pricing and ease of booking, often highlighting significant savings on flights. However, the company faces notable criticism regarding its customer service, particularly during high-demand promotions, where long wait times and difficulties in reaching support representatives are common concerns. Issues with confirmation and communication further detract from the overall experience. While customers appreciate the value offered, enhancing customer service responsiveness could significantly improve satisfaction levels.

I booked a united airline ticket with them and tried to cancel it within 24 hours. But their website is super crappy and uninformative. I couldn't find the cancellation button in the itinerary page. So I went to the united airline to cancel the ticket. After two days, UA canceled my ticket but didn't refund me since I booked with studentuniverse.com. I called studentuniverse.com for refund and they declined my request saying that it has already been over 24 hours. Holy, sxxxt. I was very annoyed by their service. They canceled my ticket and wouldn't refund me. The student universe didn't clearly instruct the customer about the cancellation procedure and they won't pay for their fault. I'm very upset with their service. Do not book with student universe if you can!

Hi there,
We're sorry you had a negative experience and that the cancellation process was confusing for you. However, our 24-hour free cancellation rule is strictly enforced. Our customer service team is always available and there are multiple ways to contact us. They could have assisted you with changing or cancelling your flight within that 24-hour window. We hope you'll give us another chance in the future. Please let us know if there's anything else we can do to help.
Thanks,
StudentUniverse

Poor customer service
April 17, 2018

I had a poor experience with student universe, customer service in particular. Jim Field was the travel agent I was dealing with. He replied quickly to my concerns, which I appreciated, but he also lied to me about a flight and knew it. I then expressed my disappointment and he then did nothing to fix it. Will not be booking with them again.

WORST SERVICE!
April 4, 2018

I have booked the ticket with insurance, but now when I need to cancel the ticket they are charging me 600$ for cancellation. This is crazy! Worst customer service for students, the representative seemed that he did not even know what he was taking about! He Confused me and did not provide any information on how my travel insurance may help me get my money back.

Hi there,
We're sorry you had a negative experience. Unfortunately, cancellation and change fees are standard across the travel industry and not all types of travel insurance covers cancellation/change fees. Please let us know if there's anything else we can do.
Thanks,

The second leg of my daughter's flight was cancelled before she left her origin, but after she'd checked in online. Upon calling SU, the team took the case immediately, ran with it through rescheduling (3 people involved). She'll be home a few days late, but not stranded in Rome - Kudos.

An airline schedule change has caused a misconnection in my itinerary. While in these situations for tickets booked directly through airlines the modification of the reservation is immediate, StudentUniverse's process to modify the reservation is a real pain.
First of all, I was NOT notified of the schedule change. I could have gone to the airport and notice there that I didn't have enough time to catch my connecting flight. After I noticed the schedule change, I contacted StudentUniverse to modify my reservation, as requested by the airline. 8 days has passed since my first email, and I am still waiting for StudentUniverse to confirm my new itinerary. Completely unacceptable.

Overcharged for flight
January 9, 2018

I booked a flight with student universe and it was cheaper than the other flights I could find to and from the same destinations. But when I checked my credit card statement I was charged an extra 30 dollars which was never shown in the invoice OR receipt. Currently am in the process of trying to get my money back.
DO NOT BOOK WITH THEM.

Ruby, did you use a promo code on your booking? With some of our promo codes the full amount of the ticket is charged to you and then the promo code amount is credited back. Alternatively, this could be a foreign transaction fee depending on where you booked from. Please let us know if it is not either of these scenarios and we will further investigate.

Customer Service
December 13, 2017

I had booked a round trip flight from JFK(New york) to BLR(Bangalore, India) on 18th December. Had a layover in saudi arabia jedahh airport for 13 hrs. Initially while booking they had not mentioned anywhere about the transit visa. But today morning that a transit visa is required if layover is more 12 hrs. I tried calling them and asking for a reschedule but none were available. I had to cancel the booking. 120$ Student universe cancellation fee and also 250$ airline cancellation fee is there it seems. Huge loss for us.

We're sorry that you were not aware of the need for a Transit Visa. We do have a Transit Visa filter on our search page that helps passengers select their flight (and where their layover will be) based on visa requirements. This is also stated below the itinerary under "additional restrictions that apply to this ticket" and website Terms of use.

Mounica, just replied to your message as well, but wanted to confirm that the insurance (if what was purchased through Trip Mate covers cancellation) will refund you for the cancellation fees, but they are still paid initially at the time of cancellation.

Booked a trip to London with my roommate. We were both very excited to travel abroad, and it looked like StudentUniverse would be a good option. Unfortunately, a mandatory work obligation came up, forcing us to change our return date. To move the return flight up a few days was going to cost over $400 in fees, plus an additional ~$390 flight adjustment cost. We ended up having to completely cancel our flights, and were charge $460 in fees, just to cancel. Not a very student-friendly booking website.

Scott, I've further investigated and the tickets you purchased had associated change/cancellation fees of $200 per ticket (these fees are outlined during the booking process). Also, since you had used a promo code for your bookings for $30/each ticket and were refunded the price of the flight in full for each flight, we had to recoup the $30 promo for each ticket. We know it stinks to pay fees when plans change, but next time perhaps looking into refundable options might be a better fit. Please let us know if there is anything else we can do to help!

Caroline, I didn't receive back your booking ID I had messaged you for, but I looked further into this. The agent mentioned he had emailed the information over a few times and also sent the vouchers with all information attached. Perhaps you did not receive his emails? I know he had also tried to call you to discuss, so I hope everything is set, but if not please let me know!

Jacob, curious if you could provide some more detail on why customer service was reserving a ticket, were you having trouble doing so on the website? Also, if you could private message me your StudentUniverse reservation code that would be a big help so I can further explore this issue.

Do not use this company. My daughter booked tickets through this company to study abroad. When she found out she could not go through Dublin, due to student visa issues, they would not help us and yes we were willing to pay all change fees. We contacted British Airways (ticket holder) and they said it should not be a problem for them to change it - Not until I conferenced in a lovely British Airways agent who was willing to stay on the line were they willing to change our route. Thank you British Airways! I spent over 3 hours on the phone with them trying to understand why they would not help. Go direct - sad part is this fraudulent travel agency was recommended through the abroad program :(

I cannot say enough good things about Student Universe, especially "Charles".
My daughter had booked a trip to Europe for the summer. Due to a medical condition that needed surgery in the middle of her trip, she flew out to do her semester abroad, but needed to return early. The airlines AND travel insurance would not refund her return ticket OR allow us to change her return flight. Charles fought for us 100% and to my surprise, a month later, a found a credit for her return flight from British Air. Thank you Charles! During a very difficult time for my family, Student Universe was compassionate and efficient.

Seriously student universe is the worst travel company I have ever come across. They can go back on their words and written agreements and make up new stories. All the representatives are poorly informed about policies and managers say something different and their leads will tell a whole new agreement and stories.
I am down with $1000 and I swear never ever coming back to them for any travel no matter what.

I have a flight from LAX to Edinburgh Scotland. I land at London Heathrow and have 4 hours to completely change airports. It is not possible to land, get my checked bags, get through customs, get transportation, and somehow get to Gatwick, re-check in and get where I need to go all within 4 hours. It is an hour alone to even travel from one airport to the other if there is no traffic. I tried to call and send an email about my issues and the Student Universe hotline pretty much told me that it is a "valid" connection and that they can't be held responsible if something goes wrong... I tried to cancel my flight and they said that the airline charges nothing but they will charge $400 if I do... so I am stuck, traveling alone in another country for the first time and if EVERYTHING doesn't go exactly on schedule, then I will be stranded in a country I have never been to, all by myself... and when I explained this to Student Universe, they just told me that they aren't responsible for any of it.

Terrible company!
February 24, 2017

I booked a flight through them and I had to cancel it because of plan change, I have cancelled another flight in the past and I know that they charge 25 % when you cancel, however this time they said this ticket isn't refundable even though there is about 2 weeks till the departure date! After I said to the guy in the phone then there no difference of I cancel it or just simply don't show up... He said if you don't show up you will be charged a fee on top! What a $#*!ing lie... he just said that so they can get the seat back and resell it!

I will never use this shifty company again ever!

Moneer, there is not a set percentage charged for cancellation, it depends on the type of ticket booked on our site that dictates how flexible the change/cancellation is, and what the associated fees are. We do apologize that you were quoted a fee for not showing up for your flight, that fee was actually if you missed your flight and looked to re-book. The agent helping you mis-interpreted that to you on the phone. If we can be of any further help with making changes to your itinerary, please let us know.

Very unsatisfactory customer service. Very unprofessional.

I booked my two-way tickets from Boise, Idaho to Kathmandu, Nepal for December 12 on October 14, which unfortunately transits through Vancouver, Canada. Unfortunately, Canada requires a transit visa - policy which I totally respect but I wasn't aware of until this Sunday. Had I known it even a week earlier, I would have gotten enough time to apply for visa, and it's already late to process visa as I only have 7 working days left until my flight day (they take 19 working days and no expedition option - trust me I tried every possible option).

I totally agree that based on my particular itinerary, my tickets are non-refundable. They restrict me to cancel and even re-route my ticket. I also understands that it is actually traveller's responsibility to manage the visa requirements. But don't you think that not knowing about 1 country's transit visa policy among 196 countries in the world is reasonable enough to be considered for atleast re-routing (in your own airline or the travel agency that provides the so called global service around the world) the tickets for customer's convenience (given that it is only me second international flight)? And, what if the customer were people who don't usually have knowledge how to find such information regarding their flights? And, don't you think, not even offering "any option except for cancelling with just a tax amount and re-reserving a ticket" to a customer with an authentic reason to do so is some kind of loot to customers? I know I might have looked for cheaper fare, isn't that what any students/middle class people would do? Isn't that why your organization exists for? And does the policy really have to be that much strict just for the reason I looked for an inexpensive fare from one of the largest airlines and travel agent? Is it just the money that binds the service provider and the customers? As a service provider, don't you appreciate how we coordinate when the airlines when they are delayed due to your own mistakes, and we JUST understand it? Shouldn't it be as that simple to help your customers back, too?

Really frustrating.

NOT SAFE.
July 22, 2016

I will never book with Student Universe again. I booked a trip to Istanbul way back before any terror attacks began. As soon as they started, I called to cancel. I was told there was nothing that they could do, as Turkish airlines claims there is no threat traveling to Istanbul. Then the airport I am supposed to fly to was attacked. Again, I was told that there was nothing that they could do. I quote the state government website, "In light of the July 15 coup attempt and the resulting potential for interruptions to travel and daily life, we suggest U.S. citizens reconsider travel to Turkey at this time. This replaces the Travel Warning dated July 16,2016." Despite this and Turkey's declared three-month state of emergency, Student Universe refuses to give me a refund. I am a solo female traveler. This company targets students such as myself. Clearly they focus on students not to help broaden cultural perspectives, but rather to steal their money and take advantage of their courage to attempt to explore the world safely. I am extremely disappointed in this company and will continue to spread the word about this unfortunate inability to keep their customers safe.

Marilyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your concerns. Our ability to refund passengers is based on the waivers issued by the airline when incidents occur. In this case, Turkish Airlines issued a waiver for cancellation/refund but was limited to tickets departing Jul16-July20, after which normal ticket restrictions would apply. The FAA travel ban for US citizens was also lifted shortly after it was issued as well, thus airlines such as Turkish Air are not liable for any cancellation/change fees for transactions outside the window covered by their waivers. If you could private message us your reservation code, we can further investigate any other options that might be available in this case.
