Roomster Reviews Summary

The company, Roomster, exhibits a polarized reputation among its users. Positive feedback highlights the platform's user-friendly interface and a variety of affordable listings, with some customers successfully finding suitable rooms. However, significant concerns overshadow these strengths, including deceptive practices regarding message visibility, a lack of genuine leads, and inadequate customer support. Many users express frustration over payment models that feel exploitative, alongside reports of scams and unresponsive service. Overall, while some appreciate the platform's potential, the prevailing sentiment suggests a need for improved transparency and customer care to enhance user trust and satisfaction.

I can't believe they charge you to read your messages! They lure you into thinking theres a so-called "free basic" service, & once you get an email/reply for a potential roommate, they block you from reading it by stating you have to upgrade and pay... I am not going to give these scumbags my information, I can't believe I opened up a profile, so bogus. Worst, some Spammer from Craigslist sent me a link when I posted an Ad for Wanted Roomshare...

Have to pay if you want to even read an email from another member. So I paid 3 days, just to find out that the "messages" I had received were of absolutely no information. I ended up being charged more after 3 days and I should not have had to pay the 3 days as it was. Will never go onto the sight again. I recommend staying away.

As with other customers who have reviewed Roomster, I signed up for a month and ended up paying for three until I noticed and cancelled. Unlike other sites that let you know that if you don't cancel you're subscription you'll automatically be enrolled in monthly payments, there is no such statement on the Roomster payment page.

Finally, the reason I cancelled is that I noticed that I was double-charged for one month. I contacted customer service to dispute the second charge and they basically said that they didn't charge me twice. I offered to send them a copy of my credit card statement, but they just kept insisting they only charged me once. I ended up filing a dispute through my credit card company.

As for the actual services, none of the emails I got matched the filters I set up. I was looking for a very specific rooming situation, and instead I just got blasted by a bunch of people with properties to unload. Craigslist was infinitely more helpful in the roommate search.

To sum it all up: The site will not help you find a roommate, the payment details are shady, and the customer service is basically non-existent. Stay away.

Same as most of the other reviewers. Found a $30 charge on my account MINUTES after my original 3-day subscription ended. Does not refer to the smaller subscriptions as "trials," which is what they are. Terrible customer service, they honestly don't care about their customers at all. I'm enraged and ready to spread the word about this scam.

Do not use this "service"
December 29, 2011

Do not use this "service". All of what you are reading here is true. They are as villianous and shady as any predatory financial lender you've ever heard of. You sign up for a temporary memebership, and are then socked with a $29.95 monthly membership a couple of weeks later. After pleading with customer service regarding my dire financial situation, I received a snarky email from a rep who relished letting me know I "agreed" to this subscription.

STAY CLEAR OF ROOMSTER!
November 18, 2011

STAY CLEAR OF ROOMSTER! The whole website purely revolves around deception and ripping you off, after filling in a huge and mostly pointless form you have to pay to use the service then the real joke is that its worse than all of the free ones like spareroom.com and easyroommate! Absolutely useless website for what it is then on top of that they automatically set you up with a direct debit and charge you double the starting price every month - all without telling you! Don't know about you but i'd call that fraud. You'd be an absolute idiot to use roomster and you'd be guaranteed to be ripped off, this company should be shut down

This company is awful and deceiving. They say once you agree to their terms and conditions you are billed automatically every month. However when you sign up, they don't make you aware of this. Their are much better websites to use for finding a roommate. STAY AWAY FROM ROOMSTER!

I also was scammed by this company. I just noticed that they charged my account and I also only signed up for the 3-day trial. I have informed them that I want my money back and I will go to every media outlet to do so and inform people of their shady ways!

DO NOT USE ROOMSTER!
October 21, 2011

DO NOT USE ROOMSTER!

As a former user of Roomster, I would strongly suggest that you do NOT join their service. They charge a nominal fee to use their most important tools (namely messaging other users)... which is an ethically dubious practice, considering that Roomster sells advertising on their site. Roomster will also surreptitiously CHARGE A SUBSCRIPTION FEE of approx. $30 without you knowing. Asking for a refund is a hassle; do yourself a favor and don't even sign up. Craigslist works fine without the headaches.

Went through the same thing as others. Signed up for the trial period then was charged the $30. As much as that hurt my bank account (im not working and attempting to relocate from Missouri to DC so every penny counts) I can only be made at myself for not looking up reviews beforehand and not paying attention to the fine print :( At least roommates.com doesn't automatically renew your subscription.

Worst site EVER
August 9, 2011

Worst site EVER. DO NOT SIGN UP!

Worst Customer Service.
If you sign up for a "3 day subscription" they automatically will recharge you even though you are under the impression you are only getting a 3 day subscription and will charge you $30.00 after that runs out.

DO NOT SIGN UP FOR THIS WEBSITE! ITS A SCAM!

On June 15th, 2011, I signed up for a 2 week subscription to Roomster.com and paid $14.95 for the service. At that time when I signed up there was NO disclaimer about being automatically renewed and charged for a full month if I did not cancel the service myself before the 2 weeks ended. And on the 15th day, my credit card was charged $29.95 for a full month WITHOUT my authorization or email notification. When I contacted Roomster.com (they don't have a phone # for you to call, so it's only through email that they communicate), they stated that there was a disclaimer about being renewed and charged automatically and sent me a doctored "screenshot" that was somehow taken at that time (2 weeks earlier) and of course there is a disclaimer "all of a sudden" way at the bottom of the "screenshot" page. I'm submitting a fraudulent charge through my bank against them, to the Better Business Bureau, and every other website I can find to warn other consumers that Roomster.com practices deceitful business and considers its patrons stupid enough to accept an "after-the-fact, doctored screenshot" as a burden of proof for an unauthorized credit card charge by their company!

I signed in on day 3 of my subscription planning to cancel. When I logged in to find out you had already charged me for 30 more days. Looking at the terms, I was about 3 hours later than 72 hour cut off, all because I didn't get to take care of my personal computing needs in time to cancel before it was automatically renewed. I am a medical student traveling for rotations- I do not have access to a computer to take care of personal matters during the day while I am in clinic. The moment I got home, I tried to take care of this only to see I had already been charged. I have been recommending their site to my peers who also need to travel for rotations. I will no longer do this, and I am going to inform those that I have recommended the site to about your ruthless attitude toward customers. The website is designed to charge unsuspecting consumers for additional memberships and it works because no one ever reads the fine print. This is borderline fraudulent and most certainly unethical. I have found their customer service department to be very rude and short with their responses. Please pay attention to these reviews and do not use this site!

Tried using this site to locate a roommate. In all of Greater Cincinnati there were only two or three people actively looking for roommates. There were plenty of profiles, just not active profiles.
The site was totally useless.

Roomster's Share It button is the best thing ever. I found the perfect apartment, but it was 2 bedrooms, so I needed to share it with someone. I clicked on Share it button, and in a day, I got a message from Claire that she wanted to move in with me to that apartment. Thanks to Roomster that now I am able to live in my dream apartment, and share it with the most fun-loving person I have ever met!
