The company, Roomster, exhibits a polarized reputation among its users. Positive feedback highlights the platform's user-friendly interface and a variety of affordable listings, with some customers successfully finding suitable rooms. However, significant concerns overshadow these strengths, including deceptive practices regarding message visibility, a lack of genuine leads, and inadequate customer support. Many users express frustration over payment models that feel exploitative, alongside reports of scams and unresponsive service. Overall, while some appreciate the platform's potential, the prevailing sentiment suggests a need for improved transparency and customer care to enhance user trust and satisfaction.

Hostile marketing! They ask for your personal info before showing ads.
The profiles are horribly out-of-date. A profile listed in our area was marked new but the guy who listed it had done so over a year earlier. We listed a house share with detailed information. The only response was from a "Doctor" from outside the U.S. who messaged that he was arriving in three hours (no time to check references!) for a two-week stint as a guest lecturer at the University here... great, except the University is on winter break for the next three weeks... no way I will trust this website again.
Sticking with craigslist from now on.
This is a scam. The profiles are not real, and their business practices are unethical, to say the least. When you first search the site, you are forced to create a profile in order to go further. Once the profile is created, they lure you with a phony inquiry. In order to see the inquiry, you have to pay. You think someone is interested so you take out your credit card. What happens next? The "person" who contacted you disappears. Customer Service is unavailable, and it doesn't take long to realize that you have been ripped off. BUT, I did not allow them to steal from me. I contacted my credit card company, documented everything, took screen shots, and had the charges reversed. It took hours to do this, but I was not about to be ripped off by these pieces of pond scum. Had I done my research prior to signing up, I would have been warned. Please, please be warned. If you are on here looking at this company, it means that you were taken. Fight the charges. These are truly creepy people, and you must tell your credit card company that you will not pay, and print out complaints for them to see - that is what I did. There are warnings about Roomster all over the Web. Bookmark them, and use those as documentation.
This website is truly horrible. It looks like I'm not the only one who became victim to this fraud. Used the site for just a few days - Charged 3 times 30$ and no response from customer service.
I've also used a site called Easy Roommate. They charged the same, but I had much more results and a lot less trouble...
Like others have said, this site does not even deserve one star.
I've had the same issue as everyone else.
I paid for the 3 day subscription ($5.95) and after the 3 days, my card was charged for $29.95.
There is NO reason this site is worth $29.95 - your paying to view messages people send you that you can just as easily view on their site for free.
You're better off searching for housing on Craigslist.
To those who have had issues getting their money back, threaten to get your bank involved.
They will refund you.
I canceled my subscription twice. I let the first time slide, because I thought maybe I had just done something wrong. I didn't. The second time I was careful to make sure I had canceled it, and went back to the Roomster site to make sure it was canceled. It said it was. A couple days later, I had to spend a couple hours on the phone with my bank and Paypal to ensure they weren't going to take anymore money out of my account. Essentially, they stole $60 from me that I did not authorize. From reading the reviews, it looks like I'm not the only one. Also, their 24 hour service, I called three separate and random times. They were always in a meeting. Odd, I didn't know pathetic low-lifes had meetings that lasted from noon to 8pm, and continued the next day. It's a scam, just use craigslist. Despite "the craigslist killer" it's still safer.
Horrifying, nightmare of a site - Obviously the creators have no integrity at all.
I will gladly join any class action activities against the site - Feel free to message me about any that are initiated.
I just posted the following on my profile at roomster.com - I wonder how long it will stay up?
Unfortunately, this site is not what it appears to be at first.
Having paid for a full subscription and then sending out over a hundred messages with no response, I felt it prudent to check out some of the feedback available online for the site.
What I found was a number of individuals who reported the same thing - Immediately after signing up with a FREE subscription and posting a listing, everyone receives a message that can't be read until you sign up for a paid subscription. Once you do so, the message you received turns out to be something that looks auto-generated and if you respond you never get an answer.
Thankfully I cancelled my subscription before they got any more money from me. If you're reading this, I suggest you do the same.
Doesn't even deserve a one star. Emailed over 150 people 24 hours ago, with zero response. Paid for 3 day membership via paypal. Went to paypal, said it expired in FEB. Liars. Fakes. Frauds. Stay Away!
I payed for 5 day trial and later that month learn that they charge automaticaly $29.80 for the following month cause I didn't cancel the subscription and It was in their terms. What a waste! And the messages from the people you don't get right alway. Very in useful site and didn't work properly. The idea is good but so SNEAKY! I hate this site!
I paid $ 14 as evaluation trying to find a roommate.
It never work, no one would ever return your messages. I learnt that later on craigslist where I met one of those roomate.com recipients. They told me they have to pay for reading the messages.
It is just a crap to me or everyone else if we pay $14 or less for a evaluation.
However, it is more like a scam to me that they charge me for $29 for the following months. I usually checked my credit card statement, but not the PAYPAL one, which is just an item on my credit card statement. So I didn't know I have been charged $90 because I didn't cancel the subscription.
The customer service already has an official canned message telling you how they can legally steal your money. And I wouldn't be surprised if I found this review here.
In the Houston, TX area alone on Craigslist, there are HUNDREDS of FAKE, BOGUS, TOTAL SCAM rooms and houses listed, many with fake pictures, that are absolute fakes, and total "scam come-ons" just posted to LURE people into JOINING THEIR SCAM WEBSITE, based upon TOTALLY deceptive, TOTALLY FALSE postings or listings or whatever one wishes to call them. DON'T BE FOOLED and DON'T WASTE 5.95 or 29.95 or any money and any time and grief whatsoever... THEY ARE TOTAL SCAMMERS! SHAME on these total FRAUDS!
The most sneaky site on the internet. I register for the 3 day trial for $5.95 to try it out. What they fail tot mention is, if you don't cancel your membership within 3 days, they will automatically upgrade you to the $29.95 full service and charge you for it. You can't get a refund because it's in their "terms of agreement".
All the positive reviews on here are surely written by roomster themselves. All the messages are from creeps and yes, they take advantage of broke people in times of transition to withdraw $29.95 from their accounts without authorization. STAY AWAY.
Very useful site. I was looking for a room in Boston where I go to school. Found a place in less than a week. Really liked being able to view links to FB pages. Good Job!
I found a roommate in 1 day in NYC which is pretty impressive. I did pay and canceled no problem. They have made improvements to their past issues. I will use Roomster again and will recommend Roomster to my friends. Wish the service worked better on the iphone though.
The website is fairly user friendly, a new should spend some time familiarizing themselves with how it is laid out, once that is know their tools for finding roommates or rooms is good.
With that being said, their selection is not very big. And I suspect it is because of the high fees for subscriptions and the fact that the fine print is elusive and tricky, charging for future subscriptions. Beware! I have experienced this problem twice now in a three year period- a recurring problem they will have to face if Roomster would like to see more users, in my opinion.
I found Roomster to be very easy to use, all the messages were good and i canceled my subscription without any problems. I did not have any of the problems i read about.
Well, I wish I've done my research before starting 3-day trial... basically,. Just like other reviewers I thought 3-day $5.95 trial is just it, but NO, like any other deceptive sites they put tiny print somewhere in the end of long agreement text that this isn't "IT", and they'll charge you automatically $29.95 and will keep on month after month! What a bull cr@p! Looks like they getting away with this "auto billing", you better head to Rommates.com where 3-day is just IT - no re-billing and much better leads, so be warned about roomster.com as$*0les!
Nothing but a scam to get get people to agree to a 3-day subscription and then automatically charge them $29.95 for a month-subscription afterwards without the ability of a refund.
If you buy a subscription, ensure to cancel it. They charged me $60 even though I didn't use their site.

Answer: These are untrue statements. We have asked our many satisfied customers to post their positive experiences about Roomster to counteract the negative, and mostly untrue statements posted about us. If you notice that Sitejabber has negative reviews of almost every company doing business in the united states. If it was all true, there would be no business left and everyone would be out of work. People never write good reviews, people love to be negative. Its sad.
Answer: Hi Aminah, Roomster did not post that ad on Craigslist, we did not create that link and there fore we can not offer support for it. This looks to be one of our affiliates, who should not be doing this. We will be removing this person from our affiliate program. Thank you for bringing this to our attention.
Answer: That makes little to no sense. Undeleted? What does that even mean? N you want to create an account after you deleted it? Go ahead.
