Roomster Reviews Summary

The company, Roomster, exhibits a polarized reputation among its users. Positive feedback highlights the platform's user-friendly interface and a variety of affordable listings, with some customers successfully finding suitable rooms. However, significant concerns overshadow these strengths, including deceptive practices regarding message visibility, a lack of genuine leads, and inadequate customer support. Many users express frustration over payment models that feel exploitative, alongside reports of scams and unresponsive service. Overall, while some appreciate the platform's potential, the prevailing sentiment suggests a need for improved transparency and customer care to enhance user trust and satisfaction.

SCAM
April 23, 2013

SCAM. Fake profiles. They will trick you into signing up by saying you have a bunch of emails (must pay to read them). Cancelling is a nightmare and you will most likely end up being charged for an extra month. John S. Shriber and Roman Zaks are losers.

You cannot read your emails (and therefore get in real contact with anyone) unless you subscribe for their paid services. Once you do, they write in small letters that actually they will continue to bill you until you unsubscribe (even when you pick what appears to be an installment for a set number of days). And deactivating your ad doesn't mean you have cancelled your subscription, you have to follow a bunch of "additional" steps to reeeaaally cancel. Just stay away! There is enough services that are user friendly and are not out to get you for your money.

Completely misleading and probably fraudulent.

Useless search functions (ie./cannot limit to particular neighborhoods), and misplaced ads all over - roommate seekers in rentals section, etc.

And so far as I can tell, the vast majority of listings are fictional - if they were ever honestly posted, they have long since been inactive. I made dozens of inquiries without receiving a single response.

I don't mind paying for a service, but in this case, there is NO service to be had, whatsoever.

This site is not only deceptive but FRAUDULENT. If you have a non-paid account they have fake profiles message you over the room. I originally signed up for the $30 service, and got hardly any messages. Then when my subscription canceled since I canceled it before the renewal, I received 13 messages on the free account. And not to mention I had my email address on the profile, and yet nobody bothered to email me. So I paid for a 3 day subscription to see who messaged me and nobody had any images on their profile, the profiles were empty and were completely fake. 1 profile had a fake woman who looked like a model, and when I clicked her profile it didn't even exist. Then I didnt't realize that when I paid for 3 days it was AUTOMATIC RENEWAL! Then I get charged $29.95 for 4 weeks of access, after signing up for only a 3 day subscription! This company has over 270 BBB complaints, and probably a long history with the New York State Attorney Generals office, and it is about to get one more

Dont do business with this site. They automatically renew you for a 30 dollar subscription. When you ask them about it, they say, 'well you signed TWO agreements'.

They exploit people who do not catch their clause which states they will automatically renew the subscription. There customer service is horrible. I ask a question about a refund and I get an argument instead.

They clear of these people. They dont deserve customers.

Beware the Bait and switch. This company was not honest with me and did not readily disclose their practices of asking you to pay and then putting you on a higher monthly fee for a mediocre service. Avoid Avoid Avoid.

I'm reporting them to the better business bureau.

TERRIBLE. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. SUCH A SCAM.

I wish I read these reviews. The website sucks, they charge you without telling you and then throw their terms of use at you when you complain.

I signed up for the free set up of a roommate profile and to view listings. The next day I received an email stating I had "mail" from a prospect in my Roomster.com mailbox. BUT, I had to pay for a subscription before viewing my mail. I did pay only to find it was a fake/false mail... from a supposed person who has 5 different properties in TEXAS, I live and am looking for a roommate in Palm Springs, CA! Upon contacting Roomster... they would not answer my questions, wouldn't check into the situation and would not refund my money... the answer I got was "Cancel your account to avoid any further billing!" Roomster sends fake emails getting people to pay for fake potential roommates.

I personally have had an ok experience. I would have rated this site with 3 stars, except for the fact that I didn't know that after your initial subscription it gets renewed for 30 more days at $29.95. Other than that, I like their "Megaphone" feature which allows you to blast out a message to a lot of people that are looking for roommates in the same area you are looking to rent. We'll see if I have any luck finding a roommate on this site...

I signed up for this website mistakenly, they charged more for their service than advertised, their database was defective and refused to update my location, there are dozens of ghost profiles, and the customer service is even worse than their program.

I read the small print, and I understood when I signed up that I must cancel prior to the end of my 14 day subscription. Just to be on the safe side, I've calendared terminating my subscription 1 day earlier. I have no issue with the recurring charges. THAT SAID, I am furious that somehow or another, I supposedly sent HUNDREDS of people an email that says I've got a room to fill and to contact me ASAP. I suspect that they do it just so that other people will pay to log in and read the message, but I'm furious because (1) I didn't send the emails that are supposedly from "me," and (2) the vast majority of people that were sent the emails do not meet my criteria. I've emailed to complain and am awaiting a response, but bottom line either way--not impressed. Hate the site. No user-friendly. Do not recommend.

Like everyone else on this list, they auto-renewed my subscription and then quoted their terms of use when I argued about it. I would NEVER RECOMMEND this website to another person. It's utter bull that they continue to use this disgusting business practice and any legit business does not do this sort of shady auto-renewal. Stay away, it is NOT worth it.

You need to pay 5 bucks to see any replies or messages from your post for 3 days (3 day subscription) and don't be fooled, after the three days if you have not canceled your account already they will charge 29.99 to your credit card on file without checking in with you or asking permission!
Unethical, should be sued by everyone this has happened too

They provide multiple options for subscription lengths and then automatically extend your subscription to the maximum subscription length after your subscription ends. Totally misleading and very BAD BUSINESS! Not to mention, they can do this up to three times. I am appalled by their customer service as well. Emails received regarding this issue were not helpful and were rude. NOT A SATISFIED CUSTOMER!

DON'T USE THIS SITE!
October 30, 2012

DON'T USE THIS SITE!
They hide their policies in the fine prints to rip you off. Like many other reviewers of roomster, I was charged a monthly fee for a subscription that I was automatically enrolled into. People from roomster know that customers barely have time to go through the fine prints, so they exploit this to automatically charge customer's credit cards. If you're using this site, or are looking to sign up, WATCH OUT!

Major ripoff!
August 31, 2012

Major ripoff! I paid $50 for 2 months to advertise a room in my home. The place I was renting was a great deal and a great setup. I got almost not inquires. When ever I e-mailed a perspective tenant, 95% of them could not respond to my e-mail because they didn't pay $25 to Roomster. I presumed that they could respond to me because I paid the $. I think Roomster does this to keep people enrolled on the site. It costed me time and took me 5 weeks to realize what was happening. This is truly a scam... try to learn from my mistake... don't go with Roomster! I was able to rent using Craigs List in 3 days and had over 8 inquiries.

I agree with all other reviews on this page. It prompts you to sign up for what you believe to be a short term subscription and then "automatically renews" you for 30 days and charges your card $30. It is in the fine print of the terms and agreement you must check the box to before your account is active. I'm too damn polite to put in words what I think of this crap, but it is the first time I have written a complaint or review about anything. I would love to see roomster offline.
