The company has garnered a predominantly negative reputation, with numerous customers expressing frustration over inadequate customer service and unresolved refund issues. Common complaints include misleading pricing, unexpected charges at pickup, and a lack of accountability when problems arise. Many reviewers felt deceived by promotions that did not translate into actual benefits, leading to perceptions of false advertising. While there are occasional mentions of successful rentals, the overall sentiment indicates a significant distrust in the company's practices, suggesting a pressing need for improved transparency and responsiveness to customer concerns.

Do not use this site. Seems like a good deal, but if anything goes wrong in getting to your destination (delay/cancellation), rentalcars.com will NOT work with you and will take your money anyway. My husband and I went on our honeymoon and flew to Madrid, Spain from Miami, Florida and were to pick up our car at the airport. There were MAJOR airline delays, which ended up totaling to almost 19 hours, and we were getting very little information from the airline which was very stressful. By the time I was able to contact rentalcars.com after getting new flight information and accounting for the time difference between FL and Spain, they said they couldn't help me, my rental had been cancelled, and I was not getting a refund. Rentalcars.com had our flight information and knew our flight was majorly delayed but took our money anyway, so we paid for a car we didn't get. When we got to Madrid, we had to book a new rental at the desk. We are out an extra $500 due to this. Customer service is awful and unhelpful - when I did speak to someone on the phone at the airport, that person wouldn't speak to me even though I was the person who made the booking and whose contact info was on it, he wanted to speak to my husband, who literally had no idea what was going on. I thought that was extremely rude.
Do yourself a favor and book directly with the rental company you're going with. It will save you a lot of money and headaches.
I rented a car with them through lastminute. They sent me instructions to pick up the car with a credit or debit card. At the airport, they refused to give me the car because they only wanted the credit card. I asked for a full refund, and they denied it. Even though their own customer service confirmed to me that the debit card was possible following their terms and conditions.
This is their answer:
"We inform you that there is no refund option, we can no longer provide further assistance in this case.
I can assure you that we have considered the points you have raised. However, although I understand that it is a disappointment, we cannot change our decision."
The points I raised were that I have been denied the card even if I follow their instructions to the letter. I am now going via legal channels!
Booked a car on lune and got confirmation. Then told credit card had been rejected and to use a different one. So did and told this was rejected as well. Rang customer help and told hire had been cancelled without telling me. Asked to rebook but then found no cars available. Next day walked into a large hire company and hired a car at £11.00 less per day than rental cars.com had quoted. Answer is book direct and save a lot of problems and money.
We were forced to cancel a booked car at Gatwick Airport due to transport strike in Greece on our day of travel.16th March 2023. Telephoned the Easirent office at Gatwick Airport to change the book. All OK. Two days later 18th March when we arrived late at night, as planned, no car. Easirent office shut. Easirent responder explained the parent company is Rentalcars.com. Complaint form completed. Numerous emails from them to me requesting call logs, better quality photo shoots, more information - all communications to me had deadlines set by Rental. I do not recall signing anything to say I needed to be technically competent should I have to make a complaint. To date - 4th June - no reply no compensation. Appalling after care service. DO NOT USE!
I booked a car from the U.S. as I didn't know the European car companies. My flight was delayed 2 hours and I missed my connector. I spend the entire time in the airport going back and forth with Rentalcars.com to see if I could get my car after 10pm. They could not get ahold of the car company and told me I had to pay more money to book another car and they would then give me my money back. It was horrible service and I eventually had to take the full car rental hit. None of it was in my control, they couldn't get me in touch with the car company they had on their website, and charged me for it.
Tried to change drivers at pick-up and they could not edit my reservation info. So they wouldn't let us have the car. I had forgotten my license, but my husband (listed as secondary) had all his info. So they wouldn't let us have the car. No refund on a bill of almost $1000K. They said they'd give a refund for all but 3 days of the rental if I booked another rental with them (not this rental, since they had no cars!). I made a rental for another time this summer so that I could at least get some refund. Now they refuse to stand by what their chat room representative told me.
Be very wary of this company i was robbed of my 800euro deposit and rentalcars wouldnt help and the insurance isnt worth the paper its written on or the email, absolutly disgracefull customer service based in the philippines no help what so ever stay away from this conpany,i used them for many years and now there just a con
Booked a car from Oslo Airport but they changed it to another airport 2 hours away. Refused to amend the booking or refund anything so we lost the entire amount paid. Avoid this greedy and dishonest company at all costs. Booking number *******.
They lied on their website about 48 hour free cancellation, they charged me full amount even when I didn't rent the car, and are IMPOSSIBLE to reach.
I have been a loyal gold club member at Hertz for over 25 years. I rented a car from Hertz with a pick up and return to Boston Logan. Two days before my rental return was due I had emergency gall bladder surgery. I was discharged from the hospital the day before the rental was due with instructions not to drive for 3-4 days. I was staying in southern NH which was a 90 minute drive to the Hertz drop off. I called the company and requested consent to drop the rental off in Manchester, NH, ( 20 minute drive) due to the emergency surgery. I spoke to a customer service representative and a supervisor. Both employees told me I could drop off the vehicle at Manchester for an additional charge of $1,071. The additional fee was 252% of the original rental agreement charge of $425.
They owe me 432 USD for a car I have never received. Service support comes up with all kinds of random excuses to not pay the money back. Will take legal action if I am not getting the refund.
I booked a car on-line. I arrived to pick it up with a valid International driver's license and a US drivers license that showed expired because I had renewed it on-line while out of the country and had not been able to have a hard copy shipped to me yet. I provided evidence of the on-line renewal including the the new expiration date, but Sicily by Car refused to give me a car. Rentalcars.com charge me the full amount
I was asked by mail to fill in my payment information once again after I booked my car since it hadn't go through. So the booking was not confirmed.
Then I found a better price on a rent car on an other site so I ignored this mail and let it be.
Then when I checken my account later when I got the other car I saw that money had been withdrawn from my account even though I didn't pick up the car. I contacted rental cars about this and was promissed a full refund as soon as they had confimed that the car wasn't rented out and I was promissed a confirmation about this the same day or latest the day after and that the money was going to be back in my account within 6-7 days. Now it has gone 6 days and I have sent emails every day since then but still no sign of a confirmation that the car wasn't rented out to me. I Wonder if I will ever see my money which is extremely weird since 1) i got an email that the payment was not succeeded and booking was not confirmed 2) the car was due to number one not picked up.
I miss word for the un-profesional treatment and how rental cars handle their customers. My only advice for those who consider Rental cars is to go direct to the company that rent out the cars and skip Rental cars, it Will save you tons of headache, troubble and time. Eventually even money, only time will see if this is a scam in a criminal way or if I will get the money.
I had booked and paid to rent a car via this company. I had checked the T & C and I was permitted a date chase. I attempted to do this online but accidentally cancelled the order rather than amended. Called with 10minutes of the mistake. Would have been quicker but they hide their contact number well imbedded in the website. Only to be told tough luck, it was you mistake we can't help and thank you for the $350AUD. Vile made me sick, now I can't drive to my next location and have to forfeit that booking too.

Upon sending me to the wrong destination m, and phoning the company who told me that the hire firm was closed (when it wasn't) I emailed a complaint and was told that the 'was a special department' for people who had suffered as I had. Finally I got through to 'Daniela' who confirmed that there was nothing she could do or say about the issue other than a measily discount on a future rental- she didn't even give the discount, but told me to chase a phone number. Appalling! Never use this company. I was out in danger, as was my family- and their lack of care is disgusting.
Bad Bad Bad experience don't book with either company
We booked a car rental reservation from RentalCars.com ref # *******
We picked the car in Malpensa airport from Milan. The car was from Secilybycar.com.
Sicily by Car S.p.A. - Rental Agreement '*******'
My brother in law Sabti did the booking.
It has been malfunctioning for the duration of our trip.
The mirrors are not functioning one mirror shots the other opens, can't get them adjusted... and this is a security and safety issue.
We told this to the attendant and he said oh it will be okay later.
The battery kept dying.
We got stuck on the highway and when we called Sicily by car they told us that somebody will come and tow the car and we have to go and find the taxi with our luggage to the next airport to pick up another car which was about an hour and a half away.
When I asked the towing company if they will give us a jump they say absolutely not they will just tow the car and leave a stranded.
This service is unacceptable!
We called then Sicilybycar.com and they told us that they don't exchange cars
As a car rental company all over the world, they're supposed to come pick up your car and drop off another car for us no matter where we are.
If I was a single woman by myself stranded on the highway is that what you want to get from a car rental?
Absolutely not!
We had to buy jump cables and have strangers help us jump the car a few times.
We called the several phone numbers that we had for the office of Sicily by cars.
Sometimes they answer sometimes they don't.
It was about 10:30 a.m. we called the office at the airport in Milan Malpensa and nobody's answering the phone!
What kind of car rental is this?
Shameful.
We didn't know where and when we would be stuck.
They have RUINED OUR TRIP!
Don't book A car rental from rentalcars.com and don't rent a car from Sicilybycar.com
After a few months now since my holiday in Greece, it is sad having to say this again: please avoid, especially if you are traveling with your family; it is not worth it, and local dealers can do 20-30% of the price with a little bit of good bartering (no in high season, of course. But still...).
I am now seriously considering to sue rentalcars.com, if only to bring a little bit of fairness to this mess they've made. There are still laws that punish malpractice and, more importantly, written legal commitments. I have spent not only money as such, but time and effort that belong to my family and my work. Now somebody needs to answer for that.
To you travellers, there is a lot of choice out there, inform yourselves, because an informed choice is something that you at least cannot regret. Things happen.
Avoid Avoid
Avoid Avoid, I booked a car, I went to counter, I was told I was 23 and they could not give me a car, went back home and contacted customer care and was told I could not get a refund as it was in terms and condition hidden that I have to be above 25, This company is a joke, I would not trust them avoid avoid, only trouble company, be aware of hidden terms.
The customer care, did not care. I was at the counter and was refused the car. Its not like I did not show up. Beware of this company, don't risk taking a car and next thing you will get hit with cost that your not aware, AVOOID
It is the worst company
It is the worst company. They cooperate with the scam rent-a-car companies and in case of problems, they will not be with their customer but will cover that scam car rental company. Stay away!
1 star is over-rated! At the counter at Dublin Airport they refused to accept the insurance I bought through rentalcars.com and told me I would have to buy their own expensive insurance. I decided not to rent the car anymore because that was just too expensive for me. Rentalcars.com said I cannot get a refund. They sold me a useless voucher that was not usable unless I paid a lot more than promised. They also requested a $5,000 deposit at the counter. Lost my money and didn't get a car. Lesson learned: Never rent through a middleman. Always rent directly from the car company.
Answer: Good luck with that one, I'm in the same boat, I'm going to pass my situation on to the travel doctor at the Sunday Times.
