The company has garnered a predominantly negative reputation, with numerous customers expressing frustration over inadequate customer service and unresolved refund issues. Common complaints include misleading pricing, unexpected charges at pickup, and a lack of accountability when problems arise. Many reviewers felt deceived by promotions that did not translate into actual benefits, leading to perceptions of false advertising. While there are occasional mentions of successful rentals, the overall sentiment indicates a significant distrust in the company's practices, suggesting a pressing need for improved transparency and responsiveness to customer concerns.

First, the price you'll find will always look like 30% of the real price on other websites... that should be enough for most people to avoid it. If not you'll see a call out box righ below the price that says: "+ a xxx EUR car hire company fee" which is typically double the price you were told above. When you scroll over it it says "because you are under 30 yrs old", so even if some people will still try to proceed, when I did not get any confirmation of teh final price before entering my credit card I decided not to use Rentalcars.com such "border-line" fraudulent way of doing business should be banned...
I have just booked a car rental for 3 days in Thailand (Surat Thani). The website rentalcars.com sent me an email for the reservation and there's a button to click "manage your booking". After I click on, there is a blank page that you cannot do anything about it!. I went back to the website rentalcars.com and click for reservation; it works fine! THAT MEANS YOU CANNOT CANCEL YOUR BOOKING AT ALL. IF YOU'RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO READ THIS BEFORE YOUR HAVE DONE YOUR BOOKING, IT'S A BLESS.
A car that was supposed to cost around100 euros for 4 days ended up costing 300. Nothing more to say. Very misleading.
I RENTED A CAR FROM RENTALCAR.COM IN THE US IN USD$ AND THEY CHARGED MY CREDIT CARD IN TRY (DIFFERENT CURRENCY AND DIFFERENT AMOUNT). IT TOOK ME ABOUT 2 HOURS TO CANCEL THE RESERVATION. THESE GUYS ARE CROOKS. DO NOT TRUST THEM
Will never ever use this third party company again.
My recent rental ended up costing nearly twice as much as the charges quoted that I accepted and prepaid!
I was quoted for 'full insurance cover' and paid for it.
When I collected the car booked, a few months later, Hertz said no, I had no insurance at all. I paid again, thinking perhaps it was an oversight and could be sorted later. Big mistake.
Nope.
There's obviously some kind of double- dipping scams going on, whereby RentalCars charges you for insurance. Then there's the hefty VAT charge added on at the end of the rental - another complete surprise of the bad kind.
Argued with RentalCars and somewhat to my surprise the 100AUD 'full protection' insurance charge has been refunded to my cars. Wonder if it was because I wrote and told them I had two independent witnesses to being told by Hertz that I had no insurance?
Will never never use them again. It would have been cheaper overall and not have involved much time arguing with their 'customer service' about the extra charges later.
Avoid like the plague. I feel ripped off.
As per other reviews just read here, they say you are insured, then the company hiring to you says you are not. Double dipping with a 'we wipe our hands of it' attitude. We rented through Rentalcars.com for an October 2016 trip through France. They said we had 'full cover'. Hertz in Arles said we had no cover. They also added on VAT which was not in rentalcars original quote as a separate cost. ( This is a trap for young players but normally confined to lawyers and real estate agents-first time we've been misled in a commercial transaction like this). They are refusing to engage with us and say that the transaction is complete. I am about to pursue them through the small claims court and suggest others do the same. BTW just posted this on trustpilot.co.uk which suspiciously has nothing but praise reviews for this company. Suggest all with this complaint also post there, Facebook, The Review Centre, and Moneysupermarket.com
We have booked a car rental on Rentalcars the day of the rental. The site gave us no information before the payment about the rental company. After the payment, we realized that we rented the car from Goldcar (Fuerteventura, Canary Islands), which had 1,6 (out of 5) Google rating, and was actually not located at the airport where we wanted to rent the car (they took us to the rental place with a bus after 20 mins of waiting).
We booked a full cover on Rentalcars (the rental cost approx 70 euros, and cover an additional 70). At Goldcar, they told us that the full cover we bought was useless, and if we do not want risk, we should definitely buy the real full cover (from them) for 160 euros. We wanted to cancel at rentalcars, but they told us it would cost us 70 euros for the cancellation. However they cancelled their "full cover" for free.
Goldcar said then that we also have to pay additional 20 euros for a flexfuel policy that we did not want (also, it was not included in the quote we received from Rentalcar). Again, we called Rentalcar and they said that they cannot remove this, but we can rebook, which would cost us 20 euros more than the original amount.
All in all, we ended up paying, 250 euros, instead of 140...
The desk had closed ten minutes earlier after we arrived after a delayed flight. Rentalcars had my flight number. Manager refused to speak to me and they kept the full booking fee including insurances. Why would I ever use this rip-off merchant again?
Do not arrive late to pick up a car it will not be reserved and you will be paid the full booking fee for the cancelation they imposed on you!
I reserved a mini van for a trip to Denver. This reservation included a request for a toddler car seat for our grandson. The reservation showed the amount due upon arrival. Upon arrival, I was informed by Budget that the car seat was not included in the cost. I called Rental Cars customer service and filed a complaint. I would not use a company that is not upfront in its business practices.
Sent detailed claim for pricematch which was refused. Reason: Excess on insurance on Rentalcars was higher than on the compnay that I compared them with. They would only match if excesses were identical. I tried to point out that low insurance excess was an advantage and they agreed, but claimed offers had to be excactly the same.
We paid for car for collection at Dalaman on arrival in evening. Landing we found no one there to meet us and on ringing them they denied all knowledge of us. This despite having a voucher to prove our booking. They finally arrived with a totally unsuitable car for 3 adults 2 teenagers & luggage. Man said. We not expecting you till tomorrow. Their error he said. A Renault with barely road legal tyres, a selection of dents and no room at all. We were told this is it, take it or leave it. Bring car back tomorrow and we will exchange for a bigger one. That would have entailed a 4 hr round trip drive. No apology, no refund for the lower group of car just told to contact company. When we did the next day they spoke to hire company (fox hire) who said our fault for being late! We were in fact dead on time. We are now trying to deal direct with rentalcar.com. It like banging head against a wall. Worst customer service ever. Have since read similar reviews of their bad service. Avoid. Not a good start to our holidays.
They are very dishonest and don't list all the hidden fees in their service. I booked a car from Bergamo to drop off in Milan and was charged 305EUR for a one way drop off fee (which was less than an hour away). This was never mentioned in the terms on rentalcars.com. NEVER EVER USE THIS SITE.
Total rip off got scared into taking out extra insurance of 250 euros in Germany or face a 1000 euro bill which I had to get back from them for the hire car even though I had taken out full protection, never again use proper hire firms, this was also more than the value of the hire I will bring this up with my credit card company.
I had been a regular user of rentalcar.com but recently had to contact them when their website duplicated my bookings! I've been on the phone to their customer service for over 30mins now and they still haven't sorted my issue - they could at least communicate with me rather than leave me on hold now for over 10mins. Very poor customer service and they don't have the ability to simply solve a customer issue.
Be aware of these people. They say they will give you a car but they will find ******* reasons not to give you a car AFTER you pay and FORGET THE REFUND
PS i wish there were minus stars..
I paid in full never got the car nor a full refund! The worst customer service ever! Save your money book somewhere else.
I tried rentalcars.com a few times and now I decided not to use them anymore. I tried to call them up for 2 days and has never been able to get hold of them. This is terrible. I was charged additional comprehensive insurance at the car rental counter as the car rental company(Thrifty) said that my rentalcar booked through rentalcars did not come with insurance. I wanted to to clarify this with rentalcars.com but unable to get hold of them. This is scary. Imagine you had an accident and wanted to talk to them. As far as the rental car company is concerned, there was no insurance.
So - for safety and peace of mind, I suggest you stay away from rentalcars.com
I think my response to there £40 refund explains it best:
Dear Customer Services,
Your response falls woefully short of acceptable.
What you have completely failed to note is that my disabled mother was with me when Europcar tried to cancel my booking! That kind of distress was entirely uncalled for and despicable. For me, the money paid is far smaller an issue than the the attempt to strand a disabled woman and her son outside the outskirts of Thessaloniki airport!
What you also did not address is the engine warning light I had on the first day of the rental of the Nissan Note. The fact that the next day I had to drive it to a remote garage that was hard to find and waste a day of much needed holiday.
As for communication, please furnish me with the timeline from me notifying you through the app and you responding to my first request please. You have failed to provide this at any stage because you know it is in the region of 5 days! You have also not addressed the issue that it is impossible to change pick up times with the app... without changing the vehicle! Hence I had to email you. My mobile had no coverage while I was away and the phones at the airport seemed unusable, even when I purchased a phone card!
If the voucher says a flight number is mandatory how come I could make the booking in the first place? Surely I would have been locked out from the voucher until I provided it.
I will make sure that I post an appropriate review of my experience, I think others have the right to know of the risks they take when renting vehicles from your organisation.
Thank you for responding, but not for the content.
In a nutshell, use someone else.
Poor rentalcars. Comagents poor car rental providers.
Answer: Good luck with that one, I'm in the same boat, I'm going to pass my situation on to the travel doctor at the Sunday Times.
