OK... I was curious... What can people REALLY find out about someone online? For lots of money, you too can find out.

I was checking out a restaurant and scrolling down, I saw this thing for "Instant Background Checks" called CheckMate.com... Curious as to what it might say about me (not that I have anything to hide) the site didn't even know my name. So anyone relying on it for RECENT info is going to be deceived.

Due to divorce, I changed my name 2.5 years ago. It DID come up with the names of several people related to me, but that was it.

Checkmate had my middle initial wrong and it had my old married name. It did correctly come up with the last 3 cities I have lived in, but then they pour on the sales tactics to get you to pay (of course... you have to wait at least 10 minutes for all of the supposed information to load)... and then when I tried to leave the page, the site made it difficult to do that. And, it offered to give incorrect information about me for just $1 after saying the least expensive "package" was $24.00 (I think).

Either way... I was slightly impressed when it came up with 4 people "possibly" related to me (all of them were), but since it did not have my current name, I wasn't even willing to pay it $1. Plus, it has all of these disclaimers saying that you can't use it to stalk anyone or deny a job to anyone... So unless one is a private detective I don't even think it is worth $1. Also one of the people it said I was possibly related to has been dead for over 3 years.

This sight is very complecated, and deceptive. There is no one price for everything. If you forget why you sighed up before, and you fall for the same scam again, you are black listed. You can not use your same e-mail address or credit card. Everything is an add on fee, the hole package is not included. I do not recommend this sight, there adds are deceptive, If you just want a background check it is ok, pay once and you are gone. If you want to look up someone by their phone number it is extra, if you want to make a copy that is extra, do not try it for more than one thing because all the fees will add on to lots of money. Try a more upfront company.

Non-FCRA companies like this one are fake. You're not only paying for less info than what's available on a Google search, but you're paying for WRONG info. These assclowns and all their scumbag buddies have me listed as a 66yo pedo in California and my sister listed as a MAN. I've reported them to the Federal Trade Commission. Anyone who cares about mother$#*!ers losing jobs because of these $#*!ups will too. Here's the link: http://www.ftc.gov/faq/consumer-protection/submit-consumer-complaint-ftc

I knew more information than I found on this site. Be careful of the bells and whistles. They hide the disclaimers that justify them "being unable to provide information at this moment". I was able to cancel the subscription and get a 50% refund for the current month. But the service promised remains practically nil.

Checkmate is a deceiving site. They will get your information, but to get what they promised you must keep feeding them money. Don't waste your time unless you have lots of money to toss.

I agree with everyone here. I went ahead and joined for a month@ 22.86, but will be calling tomorrow to cancel. The information is not accurate to be nice. Some is an outright lie and I know this because I entered my name and things came up that are a complete lie. I will be turning them over to the BBB also and Consumer Fraud also. And anyone else that will let me. I will see how hard it is to cancel tomorrow, since no one is answering today. Lucily I out this on a Money card and it doesn't have anymore on it for them to charge.

Searched myself
May 18, 2014

Searched myself - site wanted nearly $30/month for searches & reports. Had 2 lower cost levels. When I declined all those, it offered a 5 day trial for $1, so I bit. Turns out the info they have is old (10 yrs or so out-of-date) and inaccurate (things I never heard of linked to my name, which isn't all that common). Needless to say, I cancelled. They told me I could continue to search for rest of 5 days but when I continued that same day, they got my Hotmail account locked! The next email I got from them had a msg that the sender FAILED the fraud check. Now you know.

Typical lying company just like the rest. Scam artist to the fullest. They make you go through an entire application process which by the way takes forever and even has a countdown to fool you into thinking that it's the real deal. Then on their site, they have all of the television logos along with Oprah's and Dr Phil's to fool you into believing that they approve their site. I checked and they were never on their show. I don't know how they aren't being sued by them. I am tired of companies like these. There should be a company that legitimately gives you any information you want and then to make funds they sell advertisements. Give to the people and make from the corporates. No, companies like these do not do that. They would rather take the money from the people. That is why they will never last. They come and go. The one that will be around forever are the ones that legitimately give to the people and take from corpo.

In order to expedite a Licensing process I thought I could cave myself a day at the courthouse (which of course houses PUBLIC RECORDS) and use this service. I enrolled in the TRIAL, as soon as I research MYSELF, the only information that was available without a PREMIUM subscription was 2 addresses that I had in 50+ years, my age, my husband's name, and a couple of obscure other relatives. This being said, I could have gotten more information by entering my name in GOOGLE. I called the very next day to cancel as to not be billed this ridiculous amount of money for nothing and I was told by a very RUDE woman that the information they provide in their basic service was nothing more than what I had allowed to personally be available online. OK other than minimal Social Media I do not put my personal information on the World Wide Web. She kept repeating that I could locate Sex Offenders in my neighborhood... duh I can so that online FREE, PUBLIC RECORD, she rambled on so much that I told her "I see you would rather have a very vocal and unsatisfied customer than to not refund the fee since your company is misadvertising with a disclaimer that protects you from anything and everything?" her response was "You can locate Sex Offenders in your neighborhood if you Upgrade to our Premium Service"... WHAT A COMPLETE RIP OFF AND NON CUSTOMER FRIENDLY COMPANY.

I tried it and agree with the other comments. When it said it was establishing a secure connection I became suspicious because the address bar did not show the usual https URL. So I ran Wireshark (a network capture program) and can see my search name in readable text. So don't be fooled and DON'T enter any personal information.

This site readily found names, birth and death dates. It also shows astrological signs (just what the user needs!). This site did not show my own pilot's license. It did not show the concealed firearms permit of another individual. It did correctly show the DEA number of a long resident local MD, but it did not show his marriage or divorce. Why? I could not find anything whatsoever that I could not better find on the free sites. If this site were to provide a 30 day trial period and 100% money back guarantee to those dissatisfied customers like myself, that would be ok. In this case a customer rep by telephone agreed to refund $11.43 of the $22.86 paid to my credit card. That appeared to be policy and nothing special. With what this site currently offers, How does one characterize an information site which does not have available what it claims to have? Most would consider it to be a scam.

PLEASE be careful when using this website. They will tell you that you are getting the total report and useful information with the one fee. After you enter the name they will tell you that for an additional $1.99 you can get the report on PDF, that didn't matter as you may decline and view the report there. However, if you wish to know anything beyond the person's date of birth, their astrological sign and an address that is over 3 years old, you will need to pay an ADDITIONAL $20 to view anything beyond that. I wish that I could give it less than 1 star, as they don't even deserve a rating.

This website boasts that they are "The internet's leading authorite on background checks." They do not provide any informataion on people known to have a criminal history., They just take your money & tell you to do more checking on your own. WHY & WHAT DID I PAY THEM FOR? This is a bogus website that is interested in only making money & not providing the service they say they will & are charging for.
