It is a surprisingly fast process for a fairly thorough vetting that relies on a number of factors in order to solve the challenge of how to securely verify the identity of someone who is requesting verification remotely.
It does require access to a phone with a camera (maybe a desktop or laptop camera would also work but I didn't try this) and also to a government photo ID like a driving license.

My experience with ID.me was extremely frustrating. I was unable to verify my identity because they said I had duplicate accounts but would not give me any information. Finally I was able to do a video chat after I uploaded some documentation and the individual I spoke with was very nice. He verified my identity.
Horrible. Constantly screwing up and when you need someone within the agency they are nowhere to be found. Customer Service means you actually help your customers. Being bad at your job, here, means people are losing out on jobs and access to medical records and help. Horrible.

This whole thing is not a piece of cake as I was told in my past. And afterwards still no answers nor updates followed. Please fix these situations and then y'all might have something.

upgrading, because the documents I sent were perfectly clear to me. Yet they were rejected multiple times.
But once I got through that, the rest of the process was very painless and quick. And the agent that assisted me was wonderful. She was personable and professional, as well as detailed and patient.
Could not finish process after 1 hr and 45 minutes. I asked for a call to help. Did not receive call.
It was obvious to me that a crucial part of the instructions for how to upload my IDs was missing from the website. I then used the "Help" to try to get assistance since I could use neither method for verification. I got a person who did not seem able to read or comprehend English. I think this person was a bot, or perhaps some kind of AI reader. She sent and resent and resent and resent the same useless "how to upload" incomplete instructions. She always included "I am always happy to assist" in her messages which would have been laughable if I had been in the mood to laugh while I was spending hours trying to get ID.me to work.
I was so expressed when I started the process. I mean, everything was smooth. From the beginning of the end, everything was good. The interviewer was polite.
