The wonks that designed ID.me apparently gave little consideration to the end user. But it's the only way I know of for taxpayers to electronically access their accounts with the obdurate and callously indifferent IRS. My first attempt in the fall of 2022 was a frustrating failure. This spring I had another go at it - still couldn't get past the walls. Finally, in October 2023 my user name and password were accepted, and in November, after several tries, my identity was verified and I was allowed access to my IRS account. Looking back, I'd like to think I got smarter, but it's more likely ID.me made the software more user friendly.

I found ID.me very convenient to use. The steps were very navigable and the directions plain. I had a small problem with the photos of the drivers license getting reversed but perseverance paid off and it went smoothly after that. I found it a convenient way to pay a bill.
