I.D. me is the safest website and most importantly place to go to identify yourself when it comes government issued.
You probably already have an id.me account because you you renewed your drivers license and did it at the same time. All it does is map your face and compare it to your license to verify it's you. Easy Peasy!
NEVER BEFORE OR AGAIN WILL I USE THIS DATA BASE! TOOK OVER AN HOUR TO GET TO USE THE IRS SITE!

I have no idea why I had to go through this to sign into IRS when I have had the ID.me sign in before. I felt it was excessive, invasive and took way too long to upload images -even though I have high speed internet- and then get to the part where then they needed to do a video chat. That wasn't explained when I first started the process of signing up with ID.me. I thought all I had to do was send my driver's license to verify I am who I say I am. Nope, they needed my DL, SS card and insurance card. You need to explain to people a little better what's expected, what is needed and why they are doing it.
I can't even imagine that someone with cognitive issues or even seniors in their 70s and '80s could manage going through this process without losing their minds!
The step by step process was very simple. The video ID could be simpler, but it all worked great.

The ID.me system worked okay, after a problem with verifying who I was because apparently I had info with SS that linked me to my landline phone. Also, getting from ID.me and through SS was a hassle, because I was ONLY trying to apply for Medicare. ID.me needs a DIRECT link for Medicare applications so we don't have to keep logging in to other accounts.

I live in very rural New Mexico, and your methodology and inclusion of multiple steps and allowances to achieve authentication made my life much easier. Honestly, directly with the IRS, they are so overwhelmed, I was not able to accomplish it. Keep it up the great, amazing work you're all doing. Keep that code solid as you are doing, the CSR experience, tech side, keep up the great work. BUT, so you know actually, your end user also needs to keep up their side to make the experience work thoroughly. Seriously. It is a precarious balance. I suggest putting out white papers on how to traverse certain issues. Such as, what happens when you're at the IRS end, their website, you request a PIN, but do not recall the information you originally used to create the account. If you are doing this from their end, and honestly even from yours, it is not clear on the next steps. I would consider writing white papers, knowledge base documents, but you must let the public know of their existence. A slight touch of marketing should be applied, even if it is via social media.
