ID. Me is a great concept. I deal with finance and insurance for remote clients every day- so I've an idea of the level of fraud going on out there. My new ID.me account was mostly set up, but not verified. I'd prepped scanned copies of vital docs on my computer - but the process didn't need that much from me, just the phone camera and a good charge on the battery! Once I got past my own thoughts, the process worked flawlessly.

My account is linked to an email I do not recognize and I'm pretty sure this is how I was the victim of identity theft. After someone filed taxes with my personal information, I was not able to get any help from ID.me. It is impossible to get someone to reach out. This company should not be responsible with having personal information that is linked to government agencies.
I had had an issue with a tax return from 2021 and had to resubmit my paperwork to the IRS. It's been months and I hadn't heard anything from them and knew I had to take matters into my own hands. I was required to use the service to verify that it was me and, in this case with it being the IRS and all the important information associated with that establishment. I was fine going through the rigorous identification process. I was happy to take the time to do each step and the biggest issue I had was the few times you had to verify something and then switch back to a different tab. If you're anything like me and you're using your phone as your computer, you can have many tabs open at once that all tend to look somewhat the same. This part was clumsy and just felt like it didn't fit into the flow. The section where you have to take, the video selfie was a bit odd, mainly because I had never seen that identifications step before. It requires you to takeoff your glasses and when I do that, I can't read anything on the screen. After I read the instructions, I went ahead and took my glasses off and started as best I could, but there was stuff on the screen so I had to put my glasses back on, etc. etc. If that part could be tightened a little bit, it'd be great. All in all, I feel secure in the process and that my information is at the very least more secure than most other places I visit on the Internet.
