I was under duress to access the IRS web site for tax purposes and was forced to have a live web call with an agent whom I do not know and allow them to view and record my face and the interior of of my home in order to continue. Then I was presented with a webform requiring me to consent to a privacy policy for which there was no link provided! I have no idea what I consented to but I had no other choice because I needed tax forms. Terrible experience.

Someone tried to hack my ID.me account and I didn't allow access but when I needed to login to do my taxes it took 16 days, 3 documents and a video call just to login to the IRS website. If they thought I was hacked they should have contacted me

If you want to access US gov services from abroad - particularly SSA, this is the way to go. Can't tell you how many times I've attempted to get access to services in the US, gone through long registration processes and hit a roadblock when it came time to enter a non-US address or phone number.
Getting to talk to a real person takes a while but it is managed very well/painlessly - and during MY business hours.
I was forced to deal with ID.me in order to access the IRS account that I have been using for many, many years. The process took me at least an hour over a period of three days and was extremely headache-inducing. I have no idea what ID.me is nor any idea why the federal government has to operate through such an outfit.

Unless significant improvements are made, I wouldn't recommend this tool for anyone with anything beyond the simplest tax situation.
