My positive experience with ID.me is in contrast with Login.gov. Dealing with Login.gov was a nightmare. In huge, contrast, dealing with ID.me was seamless. Login.gov,'s online instructions are not easy to follow and led me in endless circles--truly a nightmare. They could not verify my identity. They said my phone number did not match. (It is my only phone number.) But their website offers no phone number to reach out for help. After four hours on hold, a Social Security agent provided me with a phone number to reach Login.gov for help, but it led only to recorded instructions and offered no option to speak to a person. I returned to the Login.gov website and with difficulty found a way to send them an email. The result was that, at last, I was able to speak to a person. However, she told me she that if my phone number did not match public records, there was nothing Login.gov could do to help and that I must obtain an authentication code from Social Security. (I later learned that Social Security has discontinued giving out authentication codes.) Desperate, I called Social Security again and luckily managed to speak to an agent. She suggested I try ID.me to verify my identity and offered to walk me through the process. The instructions for ID.me were easy to follow, and ID.me verified my identity easily.

I tried to login to IRS.gov with a fairly simple request: was our organization's form 990 accepted or not?

My regular SS login would no longer work - I have no idea why. The simpler option of Login.gov would not let me sign up. That only left ID.me as a choice and it is just too complicated for most people and they want too much private information and pictures and agreements to access my finances. Why? It is very invasive of my privacy just to access my own SS account. I don't know anything abut this company and it is very scary to give them access to all my private information.
