I created an ID, me account a few years ago to access the VA web site. Recently I wanted to set up an account at IRS, and saw that they also were using ID.me. The best thing was that I could use my existing ID.me account to very quickly set up the IRS account. Some government agencies seem to be using Login.gov as a similar partner for added security. I was recently forced to convert my name/password OPM (Office of Personnel Management) account to Login.gov It has been a nightmare... hour-long waits on the phone just for human help logging in, websites that don't work. I hope all other government agencies I need an account with opt for ID.me..
