The "experience" is a little daunting, particularly as the exchange is with the IRS. Securing a verified ID through ID.me can be much easier if you have, and become familiar with, (1) the return under review and (2) the IRS letter that provides your (i) tax year, (ii) control number, and (iii) letter number. Securing verification is easiest if you have (1) a laptop with a strong wireless connection and (2) a mobile phone with the capacity to take photos and a strong wireless connection. The upload process includes taking a front and back photo of your govenment issued ID (driver's license, passport) and emailing those photos to the ID.me site. It takes a bit of time, but even with a trial and error effort, the result is worth the frustration/pain/anxiety.
