The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

First time on Home Advisor, picked a Lawn care service from there recommendation. Later to find out, they are a third party service. The company they supplied and I contacted for lawn care, sent txt saying they would show up 4 times... No show! Sent link to website to set up an account and add your credit card. After several times saying they were coming, they never did. Then a $44 charge showed up. I Contacted Home Avisor customer service, was told that company no longer does business with us and really did not care about my problem and shifted me off to Lawn Love in San Diego and hung up on me. I managed to get info that the company "Lawn Love" is NO longer a part of us. Now with that said, why was "Lawn Love" able to get my info from your site and contact me as if they were in my area and 4 no shows with an unauthorized charge for services not performed.
Home advisor boasts that they have top rated pros. That is a lie! They have known con men utilizing their service to steal from more people. Customers trust Home Advisor because of the ads they run, but they should be warned that after a contractor pays money to join and keeps paying money, they don't care. They don't file through with issuing refunds for bad eads and they certainly don't care who is in their website. I wonder if they even do a background checks. What a rip off for contractors andwhat a fraud for consumers. Beware.
I CONTACTED BBB. ABOUT THE TREE SERVICE THAT I GOT FROM HOME ADVISOR, i HAVE NEVER TOLD ANY OTHER STORY. 6 TREES. CUT DOWN TWO, TRIM 2 TREES, AND LIMB CHOP TOLD ME HE WOULD CUT 2 OF THE SMALLER TREES FOR FREE... LIMB CHOP, SAID I GAVE HER AN ESTIMATE OF ONE TREE. AND BUSHES... 2300. 00, BUT HE GAVE ME AN ESTIMATE OF THE 6 TREES. FOR 2300. 00. I TRUSTED HOME ADVISOR BECAUSE THEY SAID HE WAS RELIABLE COMPANY. I PAID HIM 1400. 00 HE CUT ONE TREE. AND TRIMMED ONLY ONE SIDE OF ONE TREE,,,, IT IS SO HARD TO WRITE ALL THAT WAS SAID AND YES I DID CALL LIMB CHOP, AFTER THE THIRD TIME OF HIM SAYING HE WOULD BE BACK TO TRIM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ONE TREE, HE DIDNT FINISH... I CALLED WAS UNSET. I AM JUST SORRY, JUST FOR THE FRUSTRATION I LET HE CAUSE ME... LESSONS LEARNED.
They charge way to much for leads. Most of them don't answer the phone or call you back. The only lead I was actually able to talk to don't have the ability to pay me. So now I'm out labor and money. Home Advisor doesn't answer when you call to change your status because they don't make money when they can't send you bogus leads. I greatly regret giving this "service" a shot.
I own a large home improvement company. Although we do receive some quality leads through them, we only set appointments with about 20% overall. 30% of the leads are not even real. 20% of them are real but not looking for our services and 30% never answer or call back. Also, only 3 contractors are supposed to be given each lead's contact information but I have been told by many customers that they get up to 10 calls. If you sign up with HA, just be aware that you have to multiply your investment X5 to understand the real cost of leads because they refuse to issue credits, even when you show them the lead was not valid. For example, I called a lead and he said he has never even heard of HA. Home Advisor refused to issue a credit because the phone number I called was a working number. Their logic is bizarre.
DON'T RELY ON HOME ADVISOR FOR THOROUGH SCREENING OF THEIR CONTRACTORS! I got the name of a plumber (through Home Advisor) who turned out to be unlicensed in the same county (in New York State) that his business is located. I don't know how the screeners at Home Advisor managed to miss that. (FYI: In New York, plumbers and electricians are licensed at the county level.) Overall, I haven't been impressed with any of the contractors I've encountered through Home Advisor.
I'm a contractor that resigned with them. The only reason I resigned was I was told I can be the only contractor that would get specific leads. Canceled because wa stold after signing that's not true. Told me I didn't get a refund. Even though the salesman lied? Liars and scammers. Now they threaten with collection. I won't be blackmailed!
1st. When i signed up as a contractor with home advisor, they told me the price per lead would be between $14 and $18 for residential leads and $18 - $20 for commercial leads. After about 2 months I was being charged approx $25 per res lead and $35 for comm leads. When i called to question this they simply said I must have HEARD WRONG because those were never the prices. I was fed up and decided to keep all leads paused 3 months at a time until my annual agreement was up at which point I would cancel the account completely.
2nd. When i wanted to cancel, they told me I had 2 months left and to call back then. Before I could call again, they automatically charged my account for another years membership WITHOUT MY PERMISSION. I called to cancel and get a refund for the non permitted charge and they said "I'm sorry, Home advisor never issues refunds. It's not possible". At the point I got aggravated with Ray, he implied I should get a lawyer if i wanted to dispute any further... So bye bye to the unauthorized $300 charge?!?
Absolutely unacceptable from such a "customer service" company. I feel appalled and disgusted with home advisor over all. I will never use them again and will NEVER recommend them. In fact, I'll talk people out of using them, sending everyone to ANGIES LIST where they don't screw you and have true customer service.

B. C. Construction was hired to tile shower stall. It was half done, it looked horrible. Byran said he was a tile man. I beg to differ. We are now being told, have to start from stratch. A total nightmare. Richard Lynch *******@gmail.com
Signed up, 1st 2 leads bogus in the 1st hr. 100 bucks a piece. 3 day right to cancel Call for a refund immediately, took days and hrs. To dispute and contact someone. Said my service was cancelled. Numbers they give you are not leads real phone number, it's some Google voice system. Still receiving collection threats in the mail for services never received... Can't shake the advisor monkeys off my back. And good luck trying to get ahold of someone!

I signed up with home advisors years ago and have a 4.65 rating with over 80 reviews, eventually shut them down because they are to expensive. A year later I tried them again and they posted my rating reviews again. I paid a start up fee $363. My leads are in the rang of $78 each. My limit was $400 month I received 5 leads within 2 weeks, I called each lead with in the 1st hour of receiving them. I called each lead 2 times, left messages, sent a text, sent an email. 4 never responded and 1 said she was just surfing the internet and basically was window shopping. The 1st month cost me approx. $800 that includes start up fee, with no positive leads. Stayed on for a 2nd month same nonsense either they don't answer or they were just shopping. I am out $1,200. Now the kicker, I delayed payment and tried to negotiate with home advisor they put me in collections. (Are you joking) My account is frozen until I paid the collection agency. When I call the collection agency my bill in now $470. I told them to go to hell. What a SCAM! HOW DO THEY GET AWAY WITH THIS... Don't we have a government that protects us from these voltures. It's JUST AS BAD AS A PONZI SCHEME. And I cannot retrieve my 4.65 rating. Thieves
I hired 3 contractor on 2017. 2 of them are no good at all. One contractor half way through the the job and disappeared. Repeat calls go unanswered. Another one did a terrible job and blame all the problems to me. I asked home advisor to drop these no good contractor from their contractor's list, they told me no can do. So, don't believe their ad on tv.
I phoned for an estimate to have a bathroom faucet installed. I had purchased all the necessary parts and removed the old faucet. I was supposed to receive 3 estimates but only 2 called back. I felt like it should be a $100 job. Both of them came in at over $300 so called a local plumber who quoted $125, so guess who got the job.
My experience with HomeAdvisor: I was looking for attic insulation. Found a contractor on Home Advisor, went through the process. Cot a call from the company two days later, set up an appointment.
No word from the company thereafter. I called them directly the morning of the appointment. Voicemail. No return call. Called again 15 minutes after appointment time. Again, voicemail, no call back. No call, no show, no job.
Home Advisor called to confirm my 1/2 star review and said it would post within 2 hours.
A week later, I figure that they aren't going to post ANY bad reviews about this company. Don't kill the golden goose, right?
Since they charge contractors for referrals, it's obviously in their interest to keep recommending them and suppressing any bad feedback.
I fell for the TV ads, don't you make the same mistake.
I was told I would not be charged for leads unless I won a job. After the initial join fee I was then charged nearly $200 in lead fees! Non refundable. Such B. S. they charge you despite sending the leads to other people as well. Dishonest company.
Decked out put a sick bush in the front of our house which has only gotten worse as time goes by. Does ny 75 year 0ld wife have to replace it?
I SIGNED FOR HOME ADVISOR LAST WEEK after constantly getting phone calls from them to get me to sign up for this "amazing service" I finally decided to do it. WRONG! I got a few leads which all of them seemed to be fake. They charged a total of $57 dollars not to mention $377.99 they get you when you sign up. (NON REFUNDABLE AFTER 3 DAYS FROM THE DAY YOU SIGN UP) NO BODY TELL YOU THAT AT THE TIME OF SIGNING UP.
I was told by SCOT M. Buss customer care dept. the best they could do is refund me the $57 for the fake leads and give me 3 other leads on them if i was to stay with their service.
I unsubscribed from their service after one week of signing up.
And it cost me $435 dollars to do so. A TOTAL SCAM.
I called several contractors for a painting job. One sounded great, and he asked me to send him pictures of the job I wanted done. I sent him pictures, and waited. And waited. And waited. I contacted him two more times, nothing. I then posted a review on HomeAdvisor, but never saw it posted by them. They called me about the review, and I told them that their site isn't helpful if they don't post the negative reviews. They said I never used the services so they won't post it. Isn't the fact that they never got back to me relevant? I have to admit that I did get angry at the HomeAdvisor person, but they just sat there and kept repeating the same thing. I wasted a lot of time trying to contact the contractor, but obviously my time is worth nothing. I will not use HomeAdvisor ever again. (oh, and the other contractors on the site that I contacted were flaky too, no communication and no-shows to appointments).
Hi Margaret, We're sorry to hear you had this experience with a pro. There are a number of reasons we require the pro to be hired in order for the review to be made public. One of those reasons is that the most helpful feedback for homeowners when making a hiring decision are those ratings that are regarding actual work the company performed. If a homeowner submits a review about why they didn’t hire someone, it isn’t about their craftsmanship. Non-hired reviews are shared with the pro to make them aware of the issue and we reserve the right to remove them from our network if they have a lot of negative feedback. We're happy to address any other questions or concerns you have about our ratings, please reach out to [email protected] and a rep will reach out. -HASupport
There is something not right about reviews on HomeAdvisor. It seems biased toward publishing positive reviews that favour their preferred providers and against negative reviews of those same providers. Two recent examples support this view
1. I hired a company to install a gas BBQ. The company stood me up twice and did not return my calls. I wrote a scathing review regarding their professionalism. Time went by and the review was not published. I contacted HomeAdvisor at which point I got a call to verify the review, which I did. More time went by and the review was still not published. I contacted HomeAdvisor again and was told that the review would not be published amongst those for the provider because they did not do any work for me. Surely the reliability of a provider is an important consideration. So, this flaky provider retains a 4.5 rating in spite of lack of professionalism
2. I hired a plumber and they did an excellent job so I rated them a 5. The review was published within a day as a verified review although no one contacted me to verify
I would let you draw your own conclusions as to the evident bias towards publishing positive reviews of their providers but obstructing negative ones

They tried to get me to use a specific company that I didn't select. Some of that company's reviews concerned me. I don't understand why I received multiple phone calls and text messages from this company after I had already expressed I did not want to use them. I ended up having to block their number so I stop the phone calls and text messages. Furthermore, the customer service representative told me company I wanted to use was booked up for the next 4 weeks. I told them I would not use Home Advisor. I would find someone on my own. I called the company who was supposedly booked up for the next 4 weeks and they came out the same day to give me a quote and fixed my refrigerator the next day. That made me think Home Advisor was running a pay to play business. They lied to me about that company being booked up in order to get me to choose a company I didn't want and did not use.
Hi Star, Since we advertise for all our pros, we do not recommend or try to get you to use any particular company. We're sorry to hear about your experience with being contacted by this one pro, please feel free to send them any feedback here: http://www.homeadvisor.com/write-a-review/. Additionally, if a pro on our network is not accepting leads through us at the time, we are unable to send calls to them as this would go against their wishes. We hope this information adds some clarity to your experience, we are always happy to address any other questions or concerns you have. Answer: We had a similar experience when first trying Home advisor out. They kept taking money out of our account arbitrarily. I finally had to file stop payment forms at my bank. Then they threatened us with extra fees unless we "settled" our account. We have strict DTPA laws (deceptive trade practice act) in our state. I advised we complain to our Attorney General about this. I think home advisor should be banned in our state because of this fraud.
Answer: I didn't, they have been blowing my phone up for 6 month's now and now they act like thier desperate for me to sign with them. I have absolutely no want or will i ever sign with them after i have heard what thier doing to contractors who have a contract with them. I just signed with a family owned reality company and even they told me not to sign and even when i tell home advisor i don't want thier business they ignore my request and still call and now they act like thier a home owner requesting painting but once i get to asking where they live or information all of a sudden I'm being told to do a background check and i sign up for free! But i have to pay a percentage of my leads or size of job something of that nature where i pay them for a no guarantee of work as i see it. I can't trust handing money to a company that's being deceitful in a phone call off the rip! Just be careful i don't hear good thing's about them all over now.
Answer: Fake leads, sends email, text & calls between 20-30/day and charges for each. Even if Contractor doesn't open Or answer any calls! Will rip off contractors about $800/day until they catch it and no refunds! Do Not Use HomeAdvisor!
Answer: I don't know about the house cleaners but, I do not trust the company based on my own recent experience.
Answer: You don't know you have to call home advisor and wait on the phone for an hr until they pick up
