HomeAdvisor (Powered by Angi) Reviews Summary

The company exhibits a mixed reputation, with notable strengths in customer satisfaction when it comes to specific contractors and service providers, who are often praised for professionalism and quality work. However, significant concerns arise regarding the lead generation service, with numerous customers expressing frustration over poor-quality leads, lack of refunds for invalid contacts, and overwhelming solicitations. Many reviews indicate a decline in service quality following the merger with Angie's List, leading to a perception of the company as unreliable. Overall, while individual service experiences can be positive, systemic issues with lead handling and customer support remain prevalent.

Signed up for annual membership only $347.98, Charged additional $904.52 without authorization. Account closed due to fraud, membership closed after discovering charges within one month. Scam involves setting up a profile and turning on "leads" (leads are unqualified and not verified and you are charged regardless) you are suppose to know how the systems & apps work from day one while they are charging you behind the software where they have set up "spend targets". No transparency and when you request help "the system is down". The live help line cannot see your account to help you understand how the scam/system works. Refunds are promised - don't believe it, they scam and Lie.

Frustration!
April 7, 2018

I am a real estate appraiser and have used HomeAdvisor for about 6 months. I love their dashboard and their customer service, at least the people I have spoken with, has been great.
However, they charge me for every lead they send (roughly $15 - $25 per lead) and these have proved to be very little in the way of actual work. I have received calls from people that did not intended to click Real Estate Appraiser but needed a Realtor or a Surveyor, or a Contractor. Homeowners who changed their minds or many that did not want to do anything at this moment and even one who thought my service was free.
To my shock, HomeAdivsor has refused to refund me for most of these. I even got a warning, in their app, that I was asking for too many refunds.
I have had to call and plead my case with customer service multiple times and almost all of those have eventually been denied as well.
I realize that they are giving me horrible leads and I have to pay for their bad marketing. If I get one appraisal, it is typically sallowed up in their fees.
I hate to cancel this, since I love the concept, but it is taking more time calling them to get refunds and talking to homeowners that dont want to do business then it is worth.
Frustrating!

Home Advisor Review
April 5, 2018

I called a number which I thought was a direct phone to a ceiling repair person. Nope, it was Home Ad. Ok, thought I would jump thru the hoops, maybe it would be good to go thru them to find a reputable repair person. Gave all my info, address, etc. Home Advisor Girl said, they can come out on Thurs. Nope, won't be home, I told her. She asked next available date. I stated Monday. She said, ok, I just need a date to tell them. I SPECIFICALLY asked if this was an actual appt time. She responded NO. Great. I get an email 5 mins later telling me that this company is coming out on Monday at 10am. No. No and No. I don't want them out then. Home Advisor specifically told me this WAS NOT an appt.
I called Home Ad and they said it wasn't actually an appt. It was a TENTATIVE appt. Well, the email never said that and if I wouldn't have called and demanded them to cancel the appt, I would have had this ceiling company show up at my door on Monday. I wanted to talk with them on the phone first to see if they could actually do the work I need to have done.
STUPID HOME ADVISOR pushes appts on people and, I guess, hopes that the customer won't notice that it happened so they get paid.
I will NEVER deal with Home Advisor again. I feel like I was hustled into an appt that I did not want/did not agree to. I tried calling the ceiling company and got hung up on--they said Hello then hung up. So, hmmm, are they that reputable, really?
Home Advisor was a scam for me.

Home Advisor is a FRAUD. When I first signed up as a contractor on Home Advisor, I was looking at other profiles of businesses similar to mine. I went to a competitor's page just to look at it, I never requested to be contacted by them, yet I received a call from that competing business wanting to know if I was calling for a quote. It happened to be my neighbor, who owned the business. I told him I never requested that he contact me, and I was sorry they were charging him $17 for that lead. He gave me advice and said he keeps his listing with them, but he always turns off the leads because they appear to be fraudulent. I followed his advice, and for the few times I failed to pause the leads, I received 9 leads. I called all of the 9 leads and they ALL kept ringing... never even picked up by voicemail. When you call Home Advisor, their first menu option is to 'Request a Refund for Your Leads'. They obviously want to appear legitimate, but if that many people are requesting refunds to make it their first menu option, obviously there's a problem with their leads to begin with. Home Advisor THEN charged me $272.42 to renew my listing without my consent. They claim they sent me an email, but they didn't. I keep all of my emails, and I watch for theirs always so I can pause the leads. I saw the charge appear on my account on 3/30, I'm calling on 4/3 and they are saying they can't issue a refund. The manager claims they couldn't be so successful if it didn't work, but they are successful because they are frauds. At this publishing, there are over 588 complaints on BBB all saying the same things. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

Biggest Scam of a business plan ever! I continually got leads that were not able to be contacted and every time they denied a credit back to me. Further, it's the perfect setup... they make $18-30 off you per lead, while they guarantee nothing and they don't even explain much about the app/platform. If you are contractor, you are better off marketing your business yourself. I have 3 businesses and tested 1 with Home Advisor to see if it was worth bringing on the others, NO WAY. 10-15% conversion rate, even when calling customers several times a day, emailing, and texting with an assistant.

After speaking to a sales rep directly who insured us that we would only pay for leads that were clicked on by customers, she also ensured us that we would get a credit to our account for any leaves that didn't pan out and become a job. This nasty tactic which I will call bait-and-switch is something they do with many contractors whom I also learned that they bought out Angie's List and are now making millions off of those subcontractors and customers as well. Do not trust these people they will not refund your money and they will refuse to talk to you once you start to question their tactic. I had to change my bank card and put a stop payment on them because they refused to follow through with our original agreement. This company reeks of scam and Bs artists, run away as fast as you can in the opposite direction.

This company is a rip off. After turning off leads several times they deny turning it off and still send you as many leads as they can possibly fit into a 24hr. Period and refuse to reimburse you even though they admit to having problems with their website...

Just don't do it
March 30, 2018

Used them as a independent business for 4 months. WORST experience of my business existence. To get ONE 300 dollar job, I was paying 200 dollars. I figure about 1 in every 8 leads was ACTUALLY a customer looking to hire. I cancelled and they just kept right on billing. I finally cancelled my CC so they could no longer bill. And OF COURSE they called to collect "their" fraud fee. Blocked the number, never heard another word.

I needed a plumber for three jobs: two involved real plumbing skills and one to clean out a pipe so my kitchen drain would work. I got the name of a plumber on the Home Advisor site. When he called I told him my immediate need was cleaning the drain, but I needed a quote on the other two jobs. I asked him if he was a licenced plumber and he said "yes, of course I am!" So he came and cleaned the pipe for $109, but he said he did not want to do the other two jobs because one needed "two men" and one involved cutting into the drywall and he didn't want to do that. I told him I would get someone to prepare the drywall (just wanted to install a shutoff for the ice maker, so it was a 4"x6" square) and I would hold the other end of the pipe for the other job. No, he said, he couldn't do that. I again asked if he were a licensed plumber... yes.

I wrote a bad review of this guy on the Home Advisor site, simply because I was looking for someone to do all three jobs and he obviously only wanted the pipe router job. I felt I could have gotten a quote and been on my way with anyone else... Home Advisor called me and left a message that they would not run my negative review because the guy was not licensed so he did the right thing by refusing the work. I had looked on their site for a PLUMBER! HE WAS LISTED ON THEIR SITE AS A PLUMBER! I assumed anyone they had done a "background check" on was licensed. Plus, he told me 2x he was licensed. Oh, and he did not give me a receipt. Said he would mail me one... what? Did not.

Home Advisor is a scam, DO NOT sign up with them. They sent us "leads" with jobs that we didn't even sign up for, and they charge you for every lead, whether you get the job or not. Some of the leads aren't even real. They send the lead to MULTIPLE contractors, charge all of them, and obviously only 1 contractor is going to get that job, but, they make sure that they have charged multiple contractors for that same lead. What's worse, is that they obviously pitting these contractors against each other to win that job, that they have just charged them all for that 1 "lead". So, they can charge 10 (or more) contractors all $90 bucks for the same lead. They can all go out and bid it, and only 1 of them will get the job, but Home Advisor just made $900.00.

Contractors beware
March 29, 2018

As a business owner I thought this may be a way to add to my client list. However, after signing up and using them for six months I found that I was charged on average $300 a month for the leads. While this would be fine if we were to close maybe 25%; however, when we got calls from kids asking questions and students looking to interview to write a paper this did not help. Additionally, the number of calls that ended up being no answers were at least 50%. When processing a refund we were told this was not covered. Another 10% of the calls were just bad information or non- homeowners without property owner permission.

In short HomeAdvisor has no vetting process for their clients and we as contractors pay the price. Nice idea, poor implementation.

Canceled my account and had to put charges in dispute with my CC as HomeAdvisor would not credit to my CC the credit balance I had on my account.

I made an appointment through HomeAdvisor for a rodent treatment. They sent me an email with the time and date. I called the exterminator directly, just to be sure... they had no record of the appointment, and said that it "must be directly through our tech" - so I had them contact the tech to confirm the appointment... no one ever called me back. HomeAdvisor sent me an email and called to ask how the service was... and I said..."what service? No one ever showed up!" - to which they replied,... sorry, we don't have any control over that.

No show or call back
March 28, 2018

Second time I have used Home Advisor to inquire for a service. I did not know that they would send my contact info out to the service to contact me. I was just checking who was in my area.
First time was for an electrician. 3 called, only one showed up. The one that came took all the information and then never heard from him again. Did not return any calls. Was not impressed with his knowledge, seemed like he did this repair on the side and did not care if he got the job. Asked if he had a license and he said yes but did not have the information for it when he came.
Second time was for a pool service. Again, received calls from my inquiry, one said they would be out Thursday or Friday and would call when they were on their way. Did not show up and never heard from them. The people from these services that called me just wasted my time.
Just know that when you put in an inquiry to look at who is available in your area that your contact info is just given out and these services contact you. You don't have the choice of who to call, they call you. Not sure what Home Advisors way of checking for the best people is or how they get on their list. Maybe they should check references and qualifications better.
Done with Home Advisor. Save yourself time and aggravation, just look up the service you need in your area and call who YOU choose.

Ridiculous
March 28, 2018

This place had an associate call us and literally beg us to sign up. When my secretary told the guy we weren't interested that wasn't the end of it... he calls back and I talk to him a couple more times the next week telling them no interest in them here. Then, some other person there calls and I keep trying to tell him no and he gets sorta belligerent before I hang up on him. I emailed them and instructed not to contact us again. Finally, a "supervisor" calls and begins to pitch their service and somehow I think I got through to him. Fact of it is, I have been in business in the green industry for 32 years and check to see who they are signing up from my general area. Whoa!... there is the problem. I know who those guys are and wouldn't hire them to take my trash out. That explains a lot of it.

Vent would not operate.
It is unlawful to have electrical work performed by an unlicensed electrician.
HomeAdvisors took no responsibility.

In short. In long run, they will make sure to suck you dry.
98% of leads i did get from them had some info missing, like: no name, no address, no phone #, no zip code, no descriptions, and of course my favorite of all, the lead you just got was all made up.
These where every day leads that we where paying anywhere from $21 to $87...
Just stay way...

I signed up to not get leads, mostly for presence and reviews that could give me customers. After 2-3 months I have had multiple clients submit reviews, never to be published. HomeAdvisor takes the reviews, calls the customer to verify, and like most people the clients DO NOT answer calls they do not know. Logic and good business would say I'll leave a message for them to call back. But HomeAdivsor hangs up and deletes the review with no verification. So, while I had good plans for HomeAdvisor, they will not be getting any continued business from my company.
