I purchased multiple items from Gurney's back in January…. Delivery was scheduled for April. In April, I was told that delivery would be delayed until mid May. Mid May, I was told items were back ordered and would not be delivered until the end of June. I had ordered blueberry bushes, strawberry plants, asparagus and raspberry plants. We are already experiencing 90 degree weather here in SC, and now it is too late to plant. The reason why I placed my order in January was to insure a spring delivery. Now, thanks to Gurney's, I have missed my planting opportunity for this spring. Will NEVER do business with them again! The only positive note was that getting my refund was no problem…
I made 5 orders but will only receive a small portion of each order. Everything else is backordered. Some until next year! These were not cheap either. When I made the purchases it was stated I would receive everything this spring which would make sense because that's when they should be planted. Now I see some parts of my order will show up in the middle of the summer. A horrible time to plant 90% of what I ordered. This company obviously can't handle being a legit business and should just sell out of their back yard on Craigslist
I placed an ordered for live tomato plants. They were shipped FedEx Smart Post. I was given a delivery date for 3 days after they were shipped! They arrived 12 days later, dead! In the meantime I called Gurneys and was told I had to wait 10 to see if they were delivered because they have a contract that says they have 10 days to deliver. Why would you ship live plants, seedlings at that, knowing they had 10 days to deliver them. I also received a Gooseberry plant a few weeks before that was a dead stick with 2 wrinkled dead roots. That was delivered in 3 days but was already dead. I called and they wanted to give me a "credit" voucher. No Thank you. I want a full refund as stated in your "guarantee " I will never order again from this company. The shipping cost was outrageous for them to be shipped the cheapest version of FedEx!
No precautions were made for these plants to stay hydrated especially with knowing it could take 10 days. These were tiny, delicate seedlings.
I ordered plants that needed to be planted in early spring. I was told that they would be shipped the first week in April. They kept delaying my shipment back by two weeks. Then today (May 22) my order was cancelled without any kind of communication from them.
I took time to kill the grass on my hill for these plant, and I was ready to plant them in early spring. I wish I could rate them negative stars.
Worst company ever. Do not. I repeat- Do not fall for the scam of order 100$ worth and get 20$ off your order. Or order 200$ worth and get 100$ off.
It's a scam.
This is how they operate. You will order for specific amount and they will ship you a partial order. And then for the remaining of the order they will be back ordered or cancel your order that will bring your total amount down and you will lose whatever promotion is going on.
So for instance on my latest order I had $46.93 remaining partial order and they just canceled my order and refund me $11.09 because now I'm no longer qualify for the promotion that was going on.
And this is the second time it happening to me.
I wish I could give them a BIG FAT "ZERO".
I ordered plants 7 weeks ago. Still not shipped! It doesn't do any good to call customer service. They tell you they will escalate shipment and it will ship ASAP. Wait 7 days, still only received 1 part of the order. Another part shipped yesterday. They rest will be escalated and will Shipp ASAP. Now, one part is on back order and not expected in until middle of next month, so it should ship by the end of next month. WTH? I will NEVER order from this company again. And people are complaining because Amazon is putting them out of business? Guess what, I am going to reorder through Amazon and cancel my whole order. Imagine that!
After numerous emails back and forth in which they offered me replacement certificates (which I pointed out I would never use as they will never get any business from me again), I finally was told that my credit card would be seeing a refund. What with all the tomato drama I'd forgotten to mention my dead basil. I guess I'll chalk that up to experience and get my plants locally again or start my own next year. Too bad - there were a couple of varieties I'd never had and was looking forward to trying. Someone suggested contacting the BBB in Indiana which I may yet do. These people should not be allowed to peddle the crap that they do.
I ordered seeds only from them last year with no problem. This year I ordered seeds as well as some tomato, pepper, and herb plants. My seeds got lost in transit and had to be replaced, almost too late for planting. One of my peppers was out of stock and I got a refund. One of my tomatoes was out of stock and I got a substitute, which arrived dead. Two of my herbs arrived on life support and didn't make it, as was the case with three of my tomato plants. The ones that did arrive healthy enough to have a chance in the garden were all small and spindly. I'm hoping they will survive. In addition, the first box of plants I got was just thrown in the bushes halfway between the road and the house. We were lucky to have discovered it. I've emailed them and asked for refunds on all my dead plants but have not heard back. I will never order anything from these people ever again. It really should be against the law for them to sell their crap as viable plants.
Bought a blueberry plant 5 months ago, for 22 (no sale regular price) now its 50. Nothing on earth could justify their recent price increases, the plants arent even good. IMPORTANT: if youre looking for a better company use fedco. Reliable great products, and they aren't criminals robbing you
I have gotten plants from many different catalogues and decided to try Gurneys this year. I ordred in February right after I got my catalogue. The week they were sending me most of my order in May I got a note saying one of the items was not in stock. They should have told me that in Feb. When I could have ordred it elsewhere.
We were told over a week before they shipped the order that we would have record breaking heat the following week. They sent the plants when it was over 90 degrees. They traveled 3 days in that heat and arrived in terrible condition. Plants were dead or badly damaged. In the past from other farms i got plants that were nicely developed, around 10" tall. From Gurney I got plants that were 2" to 4" tall.and in terrible condition Only the Rosemary was taller. I called and had to spend an hour with an agent going over numbers many times trying to get her to replace the dead plants. I hope they send them this week as the weather is cooler.
Needless to say I will not buy from them again. I emailed them and never got a response. And when I called again about something else i had the same problem with the agent.
I've ordered from Gurney's and lots of other Garden's Alive companies in the last few years. Pandemic aside, their fulfillment abilities were never great but now they are downright atrocious. They continually push your delivery date. Originally, I was supposed to receive my order in April of 2022. By the time I cancelled, they had an ETA of early June.
On the cancellation, they only refunded less than half. I am still after them for the rest. If I can't recoup the cost then I will have only lost about $30 or so. A small price to pay to know that Gardens Alive brands are trash. If you know of a local nursery or mail order outfit, you are probably better off than ordering the diseased and ineffective trash they send.
I am glad I only purchased one small plant from them. It was shipped on schedule but that is were positive experiences end. Apparently they ship FedEx post which is advertised as an economical (cheaper) means. Tracking information initially gave a reasonable date but that kept changing and my package was on a weird journey. Finally a dead plant arrived after after a week. Interestingly my Chewy order was sent from the same town as the Gurney order and was shipped by regular FedEx. It arrived the next day. A 35 lb bag of dog food cost me less in delivery charge than a 7oz plant. I sent a email to gurney thinking they may really not know how long it was taking for their orders to be delivered. I received an automated reply with a case number and a promise that I would hear back. So far that has not happened. EDITED- I received a reply and a gift certificate for the amoubt I had spent. The lemon grass I originally wanted was out of stock. I found a tomato plant in the same price range so I can watch to see if it takes the same bizarre route. I will update when it arrives
My order was for seeds, seedlings, and fertilizer. Ordered in mid March, observed some seedlings were not available until mid April. Order arrived first week of May with 3 chocolate cherry tomatoes dead. Herbs suffered but are getting well. Big Beef tomatoes recieved in good shape and are doing well. Still to be sent is a packet of multi sweet peppers. All in all, first time ordering plants and likely will not order again and certainly not from a Northern nursery. I've since sowed some replacement tomato seeds and will endeavor to shop locally. My State Region is South Carolina. My sugestion is don't use US Postal System as my order was delivered 4 days later than first reported. I'm retired on fixed income with meager garden that keeps me busy. Likely, I could save more on good fresh food by buying from local groceries. By the by, I did plant the subject tomato plants just in case they could be refreshed or recover but no joy. Ray
Bought Some tomatoes and peppers Plants in mid March To be delivered in April, Received them in may 2nd, and guess what? All 18 plants dead. What a joke of a company. I wish there was a 0 star.
Was nice that they didn't ship until time zones said but all live plants were dead when they arrived took days to get to us and none of our seeds grew. We have tried a couple different years and not for our region save money and time we babies ours inside house for weeks with taking th out for sun. Don't work for our area.
I am so disappointed with Gurney's. I used them for years and was always happy but we were not able to plant a garden for 3 years. I ordered this year and I'm so unhappy with them. My carrots never came up, after 2 plantings. I had 1 beet come up out of the entire package. I had to cancel my order of red and Yukon potatoes. They kept changing the shipping dates, and it was well past time to plant. I had contacted them several times but ended up fighting with them to cancel my order and refund my money. Now I'm dealing with the same issues with the sweet potatoes I ordered. They have been packaged and ready for shipment for almost 4 weeks. They keep telling me they can not cancel the order. They keep telling they will be picked up for delivery tomorrow. They have told me that for 4 weeks now. Save yourself the frusta d use a different company.

I ordered 4 items on 2/19--2 seed packets and 2 types of plants. My last frost date is March 15th, but I didn't receive my 2nd plant order until today (4/25) and I had to call and beg them to send the seeds or I wouldn't have gotten them until today. Their customer service is a joke.
Placed an order 03/26 for seeds and some trees. The order was cancelled on 04/22. My credit card was charged for the full amount however they claim it was declined and refuse to refund me. The customer service reps can not speak English. Never order from them
I ordered 5 fruit trees and spent over 260$ I received 5 sticks in two boxes, they will not refund your money. That made me so angry when I opened the box! They gave me credit for overpriced, everything is over priced! I went to Walmart and tractor supply and got 7 ft trees in containers WITHdirt for 10$ chepper then the dormant sticks. I want my money back! I would not buy ANYTHING from this company but and I will dispute this worthless credit they are trying to force me to except.
I suggest this company to join Amazon. I received the wrong item after 2-week waiting shipping period. It wants me to pay the shipping fees to return the wrong items. I advise you to join Amazon and support USA businesses!
Garden has been ready to plant since mid-March. Ordered seeds from Gurney on April 2nd and still have not received them (April 16th). Last purchase I will be making fro Gurney! Much better service fron Burpee!
Answer: Phone call the wait is moderate. However they just read from a script so are not helpful. I requested to speak to a manager. One wasnt available so the rep said one would call me by end oaf day. Of course I never got a call back from a manager.
Answer: It use to be a good company, now it seems like they don't care about quality.
Answer: Johnny's Selected Seeds is great for seeds. They are always tested for viability and the company is employee-owned. https://www.johnnyseeds.com/
