I have been working with a teacher from eChineseLearning for 6 months, and think that this way of learning, 1-on-1 with a teacher is the best way to learn. Sometimes I do find technical difficulties with Skype somewhat frustrating, as it can effect video quality, but I think the value I get from classes outways that. I love my teacher, she works at the pace I need and is very sweet. Despite some techincal problems, it is really great to be meeting face to face with a teacher who is all the way in China. It makes me feel like my learning is more relevant and in tune with what is happening in China and I get more insight into Chinese culture. Each class is fun with interesting content, and I get a lot of practice on the worst part of learning Chinese--tones! Ah, they are my bane, but I am sure with my teacher I will get there!
If, like me, you can't just up and move to China, eChineseLearning is a pretty good language-learning substitute. Their one-on-one tutoring over Skype gave me better control over what I was learning (and the speed i was learning) than any classroom ever could. Plus it was great since I worked because I could schedule my hours whenever was most convenient for me--i could structure my lessons around my life instead of having to fit my life around them! The only reason this is 4 instead of 5 stars is the pricing is a little on the high side, but for the experience of the teachers and how easy it is to start learning immediately from it, I'd say it's more than worth the cost.
I find learning Chinese to be rather difficult and have struggled with getting past the first level. I tried a program for learning Chinese during a summer after failing with self-study and felt like I fell behind before the end. There were two many students in the class and I never got to practice speaking. I felt like it was almost a waste of time. I started to wonder if I should just get up, then I found eChineseLearning. I love getting to work alone with the teacher. Especially when speaking in front of a big class can be so much pressure and you don't get much individual practice. We get to focus on tones and practicing them for as much as I want each class. And thats the best part, is I get to decide what direction I want my learning to go to and they personalize the class to my needs. I give this website a thumbs up.
Long-time subscriber to eChineseLearning here (2+ years). I've seen my Chinese improve a lot since I started. I knew absolutely nothing about the language but my teacher helped get me up to speed quickly. Whenever a technical problem comes up with my internet connection they always help me work it out fast. Highly recommend this service. Good value!
I still think studying a language in the country of its origin is the best choice. However, if you need to prepare to go to Asia or if there aren't so many native speakers in your hometown, online learning is a great option available. EChineseLearning seems to be the most highly-regarded company out there, so I went with them and didn't regret it. The teachers offered great advice and the customer service was prompt and attentive with scheduling.
I've never done well with language programs. But I'm flying through the material and learning with this site. My teacher is patient and is helping me with the tones, and I didn't think that would be possible online. But it is--better than I would have expected.
I am an Asian Studies major with a minor in Japanese. When it came time to learn Chinese, I started from the beginning. Although Japanese was reasonable to learn amongst my classmates, I decided to focus on learning 1 on 1 with a native speaker for Chinese. Echineselearning seemed to be at the top of the pile for online Chinese programs, so I gave it a shot after my trial lesson. It worked out great, as my speaking progressed and I gained in confidence. If you're taking Chinese classes back home, this is a great supplement for speaking.
I've been using ecl for 2 years now. The best part about the program is my being able to schedule my lessons for any time that's convenient for me, regardless what time it is in China. The teachers are all native Chinese speakers, so I trust everything they're teaching me whether it's vocab, slang, or whatever. That's why having it over Skype is so great because I can get my pronunciation (which is like THE MOST IMPORTANT PART of Chinese) corrected immediately as I'm saying it. There's a little struggle in communication because the teachers' english is not perfect, but the better your Chinese gets the less you have to use English anyway, so really it's like motivation to improve faster!
The key to learning Chinese is to not only understand the pronunciation with all the tones but also understand the culture. That is really the key to being able to communicate since China is such a large country with different norms. Thankfully, eChineseLearning gave me a teacher that was from the region I visited regularly for work, so she was able to really help me out with everything I needed. I am very grateful for your assistantce and look forward to working with eChineseLearning for a long time to come.
I have had a great experience with eChineseLearning, from the enthusiastic teachers to multitude of the learning materials. I have tried self-study and some other programs and could never get the language to stick. Then, I tried the online classes and suddenly it started to make sense. Sometimes you just need a teacher in real-time to walk you through things, and importantly provide examples! It is so nice to be able to make sense of new words and grammar with the help of a great teacher.
The Chinese classes offered by eChineseLearning have helped me a lot in terms of pronunciation and understanding of the Chinese language, but the bottom line has been the improvement of my confidence. The number one problem I had was trouble interacting with native speakers of Chinese. Every since I began taking face to face classes via Skype, Im able to speak with native speakers easier. My teacher was amazing and very patient as I progressed. I really believe that eChineseLearning could help you, whatever your level and wherever you are.
This was the first time I tried an e-learning course for langauge. I'm surprised by how much I learned just in the first few lessons. The skype connection worked, and the teacher has been very encouraging. It's a great investment, better than a language school here in the states, glad I did.
My company gave me 6 months notice that I would be moving to Shanghai last year. They also made it clear I should try learning some Chinese. I did some free trials with other companies and decided to go with this one. Learning online has its ups and downs, but overall this site was excellent preparation for my China move. When I arrived here I was able to hit the ground running and converse on certain topics and local Chinese really appreciated my effort. Good experience.
It's all about the teacher with language learninng, and I can't say enough good things about my eChineseLearning teacher--so much fun to talk with, and has been helping me so much, not only learning the language but also learning the culture. Chinese is difficult, and she has made it easy to continue plugging away.
I tried out echineselearning's free trial lesson, it was very good. The teacher was friendly, professional and encouraging. She made it feel like learning Chinese was doable, and she told me why it would be beneficial for me to learn the language. It was really fun. The sales person was also friendly, polite and professional. She followed up with me based on my schedule, it's very comfortable.
I am an expat working in China. Someone recommended me to use echineselearning to improve my Chinese. The person that recommended me the service obviously did not try it out first because the service is simply not worth paying for. The teachers were all very young and not really trained. Their English was poor and it was very hard for me as a beginner to feel like I was advancing. Their customer service is a joke. I am not very tech savvy and they made me feel stupid. I still believe that online education is the way of the future, but definitely not with echineselearning.
Not improving after taking more than 20 lessons. Most importantly, customer service cover limited time and reps speak horrible English. Very unprofessional. I even decided to refund.

I didn't think I would like learning on Skype, but I took the free trial and it was great! Thanks echineselearning! Julie is my teacher :) She is very accommodating and very helpful to my learning. She is an amazing person who is friendly and kind always, and always makes our lessons fun and engaging. I think it's true that you can learn with echineselearning.
I contacted them, and they offered a free lesson, which I tried, but ultimately decided not to hire them because of their rigid price structure. Since then, they have been emailing me and calling me regularly, despite my at-first polite then later forceful requests that they stop. Some extremely pushy person called Doris Zhang ignores all requests that they stop. Do not provide contact information with this company, or you'll regret it.
Hi A Y.,
Thank you for taking the time to bring this to our attention. We apologize for the trouble that was caused to you. We had completely stopped contacting you and this personal behavior will not occur to students any longer. We again apologize for this entire situation. Thank you!

They are very rigid and its incredibly expensive for poor teaching. Would not recommend.

Answer: Not free. It is a Chinese school where only Chinese can be learned, not Japanese. I haven't studied Japanese and I don't know which Japanese language schools are good.
