I've been struggling to improve my Mandarin for business relations for years. Just have been so busy juggling everything that I never put in regular hours. Since hiring echineselearning, though, my comprehension and speaking level has increased dramatically--I think this is mainly due to the fact that we both hold each other accountable--I've paid, so it's in my interest to complete the Skype lessons. This is a great setup for anyone WANTING to learn but just never getting around to it.
I'm in my 50s and have always had an interest in Mandarin Chinese. However, I'm a bit shy to join a college class in my area because of my age- most of the students are in their 20s!
Also, with my job I didn't have much time for both evening classes and my kids. After learning a bit more about online learning I decided to sign up for some Free Trials and I liked the feeling that I got from the teacher at e-chinese-learning.
Learning online helped take away my shyness and I felt very comfortable face-to-face with the teacher. It's good because
A) you can really watch the teacher's mouth up close as they make the Chinese sounds
B) you get feedback immediately
C) your learning is personalized. Since I wasn't moving to China or didn't need to know business Chinese, I just focused on my interests.
D) you don't have to feel stupid about making beginner mistakes in front of a classroom!
I renewed my subscription for a second year! Planning on visiting China this summer.
I went ahead and got assessed by one of the teachers--it was free on Skype, and very very thorough. I've been studying Chinese for a few years on my own now, and wasn't sure where I was level-wise with Mandarin. My teacher was so helpful in that one hour (I'm just at the start of intermediate) that I went ahead and booked weekly sessions. I'm having so much fun! And I'm learning so much more quickly with her than on my own. Imagine where I'll be in a year! Two thumbs way up!
I had been looking for a job in the architecture field in China, as their growth is booming and an architect has so many possibilities. I decided that, to communicate with my future Chinese co-workers, I wanted to at least have basic to intermediate Mandarin skills before arriving in China.
One-on-one lessons with a tutor in Chicago were much more expensive than I was expecting + the commute and setting up meeting times that worked for both of us. Just as my son teaches Chinese kids English online, I decided to go with online Mandarin Chinese lessons.
I took a few free trials and went with eChineseLearning, as I liked the natural, face-to-face feeling of their lessons.
I eventually passed a job interview (my basic Chinese seemed to charm the managers) and I'll be moving to Beijing in a few weeks. I'm happy to say I'll be able to continue my lessons online in China while practicing on the street.
Hi Wanda,
Thank you for taking the time to sharing this with us. Congratulations on your success!

Learning Mandarin is impossible, right?
Wrong.
From anywhere in the world now you can study with a pro teacher in China. You can still work at your job and yet go face-to-face with a teacher in China. There are a few famous sites for this and www.echineselearning.com is the most famous of them.
I was super scared to begin Chinese, but I figured that it's the best language to learn at this time. I speak decent Spanish but it hasn't exactly opened any doors for me.
I went with Chinese over Arabic, because my career as an engineer could benefit greatly from it.
I haven't regretted going with this company. JUST BE SURE YOU HAVE STRONG INTERNET! You're lessons will drop out if you aren't connected well.
I cannot say enough about how incredible my Chinese teacher was. Seriously, she was amazing! I spent months trying to teach myself Chinese using Rosetta Stone and a few other self-study tools, and it just wasn't working (duh!). I did some searching for an alternative and discovered eChineseLearning. They arranged a teacher for me, and she was a tremendous help. She patiently worked through the biggest problem Rosetta Stone couldn't solve for me, my pronunciation. If you're in the market for a teacher, I encourage you to try eChineseLearning!

I have had the best teacher for the past 3 months at echineselearning. I'm kinda shy and have been lagging in my chinese language course at university because of my inability to feel comfortable speaking in front of my peers. Jennifer has totally changed that. So pleased with my experience with this course--love that it was tailored to me every time. Thank you, Jennifer!
My wife and I had been planning to adopt a child from China for years, but we were always a little put off by cultural challenges. We didn't want to force our culture on a kid, you know? So we decided to learn about the culture first. For my part, that meant learning some Chinese. I took a class with eChineseLearning for one year, and it really did give me the kind of exposure to the culture I felt I should have before deciding to adopt. My teacher not only shared with me knowledge of Chinese language, but taught me a little bit about the culture, too. My wife and I are still deciding whether to adopt, but I can say that eChineseLearning definitely helped open my eyes. We're traveling to Beijing soon, maybe that will seal the deal!
I went ahead and started with their free one-on-one Skype lesson that they offer on their website and promote on their social media. I was a bit skeptical because you never know, but holy cow. I learned more in that hour than I did 2 semesters at my university. I'm deciding now if I want to move forward with scheduled lessons during the week. I really liked my teacher, so that may push me to go through with it. But if anything, just try the free lesson! High quality learning for free. Awesome.
I have loved this service so far. I have taken classes with them for a week now and started out with the free trial. In the free trial, you get to meet a teacher for 30 minutes and do a mini lesson. I actually learned a bunch of Chinese just from this! The teacher was so funny and sweet. It was a lot of fun and a very encouraging way to start learning. The classes are with a primary teacher and when she isn't available at the time I want, I can meet with another teacher online. It is very easy scheduling classes and you can cancel and reschedule as you please. Very convenient!
I'm 21. I've made it a goal to learn either Arabic or Mandarin Chinese.
After a month or two of considering the two languages, I decided to go with Mandarin, as I find that China would be a better places to live/work than the mideast.
I signed up for a study abroad in Chongqing with my university. However, I had six months before I flew off to China.
I was nervous, obviously! I picked up a few Mandarin books and tried to learn a bit of Chinese through them. I had no idea what I was doing. I watched some Mandarin movies with subtitles. Again, nothing.
I actually hired a tutor here in Chicago and she was good! But at $40/hr it was too much for my college wallet:(
I had heard about online Chinese Mandarin courses. These teachers were qualified and we were face to face, almost like she was here in Chicago with me. The company was echineselearning. The schedule was set by me!
My progress over the past two months has been so inspiring! I have four more months before I ship off to China. I'm super confident that I will have a huge head start when I reach there.
Can't wait. Thanks ECL!
I had been taking Mandarin classes at my local community college.
To understand the structure of Chinese Mandarin it was OK. However, I didn't get any feedback on my speaking.
I decided to go with online lessons so that I had a 1-on-1 tutor/teacher to mark my progress. I took 3 or 4 free trials and eChineselearning was the best of them.
The fee isn't so bad, really- when you consider the cost of uni lessons or a tutor in Chicago.
My progress is 3x better than when I was in the class.
Go for it :)
My sister is currently studying mandarin through echineselearning and has (so far) found them quite flexible in addressing her learning needs. I'm planning on starting in the new year as well...
As far as I'm aware, they're an 'online' school where you schedule your one-to-one class time with a native chinese speaker (located in China). "Classes" are held 3 or 5 times a week for 50 minutes via Skype (or other internet communication tools such as Windows Live so reasonable broadband is required), and you are able to influence the content of the lessons towards what you'd like to cover (like business conversation, daily conversation etc). If you find that you're running late for your class, you are also able to reschedule or postpone it to a later date.
Hi Steve,

I enrolled my 13-year-old daughter in eChineseLearning's classes for heritage learners. We adopted her from Guangzhou when she was a baby, and we feel like it's important for her to have some connection to her home. I was adopted myself, so this is really important to me.
Without a doubt, choosing eChineseLearning was a great decision. The teachers are really generous and patient, and I can tell my daughter is learning a lot about the language and culture. I hope she can learn a lot about herself too!
My family is Chinese, but my Chinese is not good. Growing up my parents spoke it at home, but they weren't very strict about me doing the same. They emphasized me learning English. I also didn't want to speak Chinese because I wanted to fit in better. Fast-forward 22 years and I wish I'd learned more when I was a kid.
I visited my family in China one year ago and the experience really opened my eyes. I realized how much about myself I still had to learn, and how much that meant I should learn Chinese. I chose to take classes with eChineseLearning because I can do it virtually anywhere. My classes are professional and I can definitely see progress. So can my family. I recommend this program!
I wanted to learn Mandarin because of my job in finance and settled on echineselearning because they offer industry-specific lessons. So far I have done 6 months of lessons, twice per week, and am very satisfied with the progress I've been able to make. I wasn't able to find Mandarin that was tailored to the complex vocabulary that is the world of finance, and my teacher was able to provide vocabulary lists that matched exact words I need to use on a daily basis with competitors and colleagues in China. Definitely worth the time and money.
Chinese is not easy for me. Not at all. I'd tried learning three times prior to hearing about eChineseLearning. The problem was I was trying to teach myself with Rosetta Stone and a few other systems. It just wasn't working. I made a little progress with Rosetta Stone, but I quickly realized I didn't know how the language worked. I just knew what Rosetta Stone taught me was right.
Having a teacher has solved that problem. I get individualized instruction from eChineseLearning, meaning I get explanations not just basic answers. This has made the biggest difference. If you've been trying to learn Chinese alone, I recommend eChineseLearning. It's the best solution!

Balancing family life with going to school can be next to impossible for those of us who've tried!
Where will the kids stay while I'm in class? Who can watch them? It's a dilemma a lot of single parents, or any parent, faces.
www.echineselearning.com was a godsend. I'd been meaning to give Mandarin a shot for a few years now. Never too old to learn!
This company's programs made Chinese learning fun and (kind of!) easy. Of course, speaking in the tones is challenging at first, but once I get it, everything else falls into place nicely!
The best part was the convenience. No flights to China, no traffic, etc. And the kids happily watched movies while Mom learned in the next room. Awesome!
I was so relieved when I found eChineseLearning--I could learn on my own time, at my own pace--but with a fabulous, native-speaking teacher. It really is the best of all worlds. I've been wanting to dive into Mandarin, but because I work full-time and have a child, I didn't think it would be possible. I scheduled my classes to be at night after my little one is asleep--so that I can concentrate better. My teacher's enthusiasm keeps me awake for the lesson (not gonna lie, I'm exhausted by the time our hour comes)--and I'm amazed at how much more vocab I'm able to retain working with her one-on-one than any of the audio books I've been using in the car. So glad I found it!
I give my experience with this service the highest rating! When my company decided to move me to China I was terrified. Although I am 3rd generation Chinese, I didn't speak a word of Mandarin. Then, suddenly I have this huge pressure to not only speak the language but speak it well. My company started some immersive classes but it wasn't enough so I went to the internet for help. I found these classes online and dove right it. I needed all the help I could get! It turns out my teacher is amazing and the sweetest person. I have advanced so much more quickly than I could hope and we spend a lot of time on my problem areas, which was much harder to do when I was in class with everyone else versus just me and the teacher. Overall its less pressure and highly convenient compared to a group class. Love it!
Answer: Not free. It is a Chinese school where only Chinese can be learned, not Japanese. I haven't studied Japanese and I don't know which Japanese language schools are good.
