I liked the store I bought a couple of books in a few years but until recently I found out that I have a membership which without my authorization they are debiting me of $25 from my account and this started in 2018 faith which I have not signed anything no I was not aware nor was I clear about a membership that was charging me, I called customer service. The person who spoke to me told me that he was giving me credit for 2023 and 2022, and that they couldn't do anything with the illegal charges since 2018. I went to My bank now has 4 charges and I can present the screenshot of the charges and of those 4 charges, only one has been returned to me. I call B&N and the customer service lady tells me that she has no idea why a charge appears in her system $25 and that was already credited. I am very offended by the illegal way this business cheats and steals their customers and does not inform them I never received any emails, any texts, any correspondence, any contract that I had a membership of $39 first year and $25 AUTOPAY RENEWAL. I sent a letter to them two days ago, I hope they will refund my full amount since 2018 because I have not had any "supposed" benefit from the membership and it is something illegal with the consumer. I would like to attach the screenshot verifying the illegal charges that they are making to me and I want a legal answer.

Missed Opportunity
June 22, 2023

My son had purchased a vinyl album from our local Barnes & Noble as a Father's Day gift and I already had this particular record. I went in to exchange the product for a different record and the lady behind the counter explained very curtly that without proof of purchase they cannot exchange it for another record. The fact that I have it in my possession is proof and to say otherwise implies that my 25yr old with a wife and 2 kids "stole" the record for Father's Day. Nice job Barnes & Noble but not only did you lose out on the opportunity to provide a positive experience you also lost a customer of over 25yrs.

I ordered from Barnes and Noble on the 11th of June, I paid for my order, it was $228NZD. On the 16th of June they took two further payments of $267.85NZD ($535.70NZD).

When I called them they couldn't find the payments so I called my bank. The bank them told me one was a hold and one was a charge. The bank gave me advice on how to get them to immediately drop the hold and reverse the charge. When I called Barnes and Noble they were unhelpful again, refusing to drop the hold immediately or investigate the charge and reverse it. I explained that they had left me in a position where I had no money as my account was now overdrawn, the woman I talked to then had the audacity to tell me to enjoy my day. I've had to borrow money from my mum to get through the weekend, and I've had to open a dispute with my bank against this company.

Trust me, do not order from Barnes online. Find what you want somewhere else where that company will not STEAL your money and put you in vulnerable financial positions.

I have been a Barnes and Noble member for years. $25 a year, auto-renew. I had continued doing business with them throughout this time. Back in March, I purchased a few books through their online site. That's how I know they had a current credit card on file, for purchases. In April they emailed me that they would be changing the membership system. That new memberships would have all kinds of bells and whistles but the cost would increase to $40 a year. That same email also said however that I could continue my current membership without the bells and whistles for another year at $25. They offered. All I had to do was allow the auto-renew go through in May.

Now it is June and I went to make a purchase only to find that my membership was listed as "expired". I investigate further... there was never any auto-renew and all my current account information online was retroactivated to data from many years before. The only credit card listed was from 2016, the address they had for me, I moved away from in 2019. None of this makes sense because as I said before I had just made a purchase in March of this year, my address and credit card information were current and would've been set up perfectly to renew my membership at $25.

I sent all this information in to customer service, including screen shots of the email they set me. They refused to even address the email offering auto renew for $25. Simply apologized that my membership "got expired" and told me to sign up for their "free rewards".

I believe they did this to break their contractual obligations of my previous membership that they were required to otherwise follow. As long as they could auto-renew they had to maintain the original conditions (because I signed up a long time ago when they were far more favorable than they are now). Wiping out my old data, even though I have proof on my account that I just made a purchase on my current credit card, sent to my current address, stopped the auto renew, which allowed to them "legally" break the agreement that grandfathered my account in.

Barnes and Noble is showing their dishonesty. With all the options out there to buy books, games, and coffee, I don't need to give my money (in this difficult economy) to a company that is going to be so obviously dishonest. And these kinds of behaviors are the soft signs that the company is going downhill fast. They will be cutting corners in other areas too. Do not trust them or their quality. And honestly, if I were you I wouldn't touch their new membership program... I don't trust them to honor it.

This book was a good purchase, I recommend for those who love a historical fantasy story but in a school setting. It contains a detailed enough story line and never leaves you bored.

They lie on the delivery day
April 18, 2023

Be very careful when you buy online from Barnes & Noble they lie about the day you will receive your book and after you buy it they send you an email saying that you will receive it 3 weeks later because they do not have it on hand. And when you call customer service they don't cancel your order and the only thing they offer you is a label so you can send the product back so they can refund your money. If you need a book sooner go to the store in person or look for another place where you can buy it faster.

Poor customer service
March 20, 2023

Purchased two audio books by gift card. One became corrupted a week after started listening. I attempted to troubleshoot at the direction of customer service without success. I was then told that I would need to enter credit card information to continue to access the book. No further assistance was provided.

I went today to purchase a book that came out 2 days ago. Now I had ankle surgery a few days ago and obviously and struggling to walk. I couldn't find the book in "New Releases". I could not find a single employee to ask, so I stumbled to the check out desk and asked the 1 worker. She said they had the book way back in a different section and called someone to bring it to the front. She was told the copy they had in stock is being held for someone. That seems very strange since all the "Hold" books are in shelves behind the desk where I was standing. Why would this book not be with others on hold, and why would this not show up in the computer when the girl checked? Seems like the second employee didn't want to help out. They offered to order the book for me, but I declined saying I could order it on Amazon for most likely a lower price. Indeed, I was able to order this book $10 cheaper and will get it faster. Customer service at B&N has declined to the point that I don't want to shop there anymore.

Worked hard on a book knowing I did not want to meet the usual gallery of rejection letters from publishers and agents. I signed up and went through all of the rig-a-more-roll of downloading W-9 form, creating a vendor account, giving out banking info and formulating a book cover. Spent 3 or so hours putting it together. Got notice hours later stating my book was now available for pre-order. I always experience hard times with these types of endeavors. True to form I get an email the next day stating my book was taken off sale because files 'were not uploaded' by February 14th. I created it on the 14th. Then I sent an email to (*******@BN.com) It's two days later with no response. I'm anticipating I won't get one and will have to go back to cussing out pusblishers and agents who don't want to work with me. Of course they don't supply a phone number (always a red flag). When you call you get a worker for 3 dollars an hour from the Philippines (red flag #2) who has no answer for your problems. The only thing I can say is...I put no money into the endeavor. If buying is like trying to sell...I wouldn't buy from these guys based on my experience as writer.

Don't preorder books from B&N. Their system is terrible: if you preorder multiple books that will charge you right away for them (they are preorders aka shouldn't be charged until they are published) and this charge will stay on your card for 7 days. Then it will finally come off. However when it is time to charge for one of the preorders they will charge you for the whole amount; I'm talking about not the $15 for the preorder book but the WHOLE amount of the order. On top of that charge they will then charge you for the $15 for the book. The $15 charge will go through but the whole amount charge sits on your card for 7 days. According to their customer service, who are rude and very unhelpful, this is just the common practice. It is not! Any other online book store (like Waterstones or Amazon) will not charge you till the preorder comes up and then they only charge you for the preorder because that is the book being published. I don't know who runs you system B&N but it stinks and you guys need to fix yourselves. And if it could get any better this happens each time a preorder comes out; you will be charged for the whole amount of the order yet again and it will again be held in your account for 7 days! Is this crazy?!? YES, IT IS! I hope that this helps someone because I wish that I had realized this ahead of time. I have now cancelled all of my orders and will either shop indie or from Waterstones. Fix yourselves Barnes & Nobles, stop doing book lovers dirty!

I paid expedited $15.48 shipping for "item arrives in 2-3 days" description. What they don't mention there, it's 2-3 days AFTER SHIPPING, not after ordering. Takes them about a week from ordering day to shipping. Don't waist your money folks. I'm surprised Barnes does this. I thought they are more honest. They didn't refund the shipping cost of course. Stinky customer service…. Eewwwww…. I hope you get really really reach with that $15.48 in your pocket.

Orders placed online
December 19, 2022

95th street Overland Park, KS really sucks! There is no special line for web orders. You have to do the same line with everybody else. When you finally get to the counter they are so negative and unwilling to help. Avoid this place!
