We are in Canada and had no prior experience of outsourcing overseas. Working with a manufacturer in China that we found on Alibaba.com turned out to be a surprisingly easy and smooth process.
The Alibaba badges for companies listed on the site enabled us to narrow down the list to those that are verified and are part of Alibaba's Trade Assurance program. We therefore felt reassured that we were dealing with legitimate companies.
The second stage was communicating with the selected half dozen companies and there, again, Alibaba.com made the process so easy. We could exchange messages within the platform, send and receive photos and PDFs and negotiate prices and terms. The majority of the manufacturers' reps responded promptly and all had a reasonable enough command of English. It's perhaps no surprise that the manufacturer we eventually went with was the one in which the representative had the best English and was able to market their work most effectively.
What was really outstanding about working on Alibaba.com was the Trade Assurance service the website offers. With this service, you pay the manufacturer via Trade Assurance (for a small and reasonable processing fee). We liked the option of paying using a credit card. With Trade Assurance, the manufacturer is required to follow the terms of the contract (price, specs, delivery times, etc). If they don't live up to their contractual obligations, the buyer can file a dispute and Alibaba will investigate. This was important and gave us the confidence to work with our manufacturer.
We received our order on time and packaged securely. The craftsmanship was excellent and the goods looked very beautiful. We tested every single one of the 150 products we'd ordered. All were up to the capacity we ordered and all functioned properly. It was such a smooth experience working with the manufacturer and we will certainly return to Alibaba.com for future projects.
