Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

I booked a 15 Guest luxurious south beach suite with rooftop in Miami on 9/21/21 for my bachelorette celebration that is on March 24th - 29th 2022. On March 18,2022 my host asked me for a list of all the guests that were attending the Airbnb so we can have access to the place with a few additional questions about parking and pets which we had neither. On March 20th four days before our trip the host cancelled our reservation for the reason being "unauthorized party" we have a full itenary in Miami with family and close friends to site see and hang out at the beach. We did not have a party planned there as we book attractions and things to do and just needed a place to sleep. Also nowhere in the Airbnb posting said anything about no bachelorette or bachelor parties which a lot of Miami Airbnb's state they do not allow, so we were really careful when selecting this place. We booked all our activities around this location and planned and paid for everything. 4 days before our flight to Miami from UT the host cancelled our reservation. This was a horrible situation and really left us in a bind. When calling Airbnb support they told me there was nothing they can do. This was a terrible experience and I was not even able to leave a review to inform other potential guests that this guy Jason from Miami will cancel your reservation 4 days before an all paid expensive trip. I will never recommend or use airbnb again. Airbnb said all hosts are allowed to cancel a reservation 3 times a year and it doesn't matter if they cancel 4 days before an all paid. Very disappointed and sad that this all happened.
Unreliable and disonest
On February 16 2020 I was in Arequipa, Peru'. I was in a nice hostel but, in the evening, I could not shower because there was no hot water, so I decided to try to find another place for the next morning and looked up on Airbnb.
I was pretty new in Airbnb, but I had rented a room a couple of times before and it had been ok.
It was 21.00, so I tried one place, and my request was rejected, then I tried another one and the reservation was accepted and paid. Later, at around 23.00, before going to bed, I checked my emails and found out that my reservation had been cancelled by the host and I had no place to go the following morning.
I was quite shocked because, according to Airbnb policy, hosts cannot cancel reservations within 24 hours of check-in and, if they do, there are sanctions, including having to pay 100$.
Moreover, this is a clear violation of the principle of Contract Law. What the host did, ad Airbnb allowed to happen, was a breach of contract.
In fact, Airbnb allowed the host to cancel without any sanction and without giving any explanation to me. Cancellations are only allowed for Force Majeur cases, but clearly there wasn't any (no biblical floods, no earthquake...), and the room was still open for reservation.
Airbnb refunded me, of course without paying me back my Credit Card fee (I have a UK CC), and offered me a very generous compensation of 5$.
I told this to a few Peruvian friends of mine and they explained me that corruption in Peru' is rampant and this was just one example, so I am not sure that the same would happen with an Airbnb in another country.
Cancelled with in 48! Hours they charged my account $4,240.08 have proof of cancelation but for one year hundreds of emails just get run around AIRBNB says talk to TURNKEY then they say talk to VACASA this has been a nightmare and VISA will not help me called them immediately that day filled out forms but they said since I gave the cc # but you have to give the cc info to look at properties
When I sold the cottage, Airbnb told me to deactivate the account in order for the new owner to establish her Airbnb account. The new owner was not allowed to use the address for her account until I took me account down, is what he said. It made sense to me at the time. However, five (5) months later when I'm trying to get an Earnings Report or find out if there was a 1099 issued for the money they sent me, they can't help. Airbnb Benny stated today, March 16,2022, that I have to reactivate the account to get the data. But this action is impossible since someone else owns and has the address listed under their name and Airbnb account now. I asked her to check for the issuance of a 1099 document in my name or social security number and she said she couldn't help me until I reactivated the account. I strongly encourage folks to use someone else for their rental support needs even though the Airbnb set up initially is easy. Plus, if you deactivate your Airbnb account, make sure you get all the data you could ever need in the future, before shutdown.
The owner, CJ, is a crook. We had an address of our rental. Changed the day of arrival. The rental was in an apartment in Orlando Florida for 7 weeks. His lease strictly prohibits him from subletting. The company found out. Sent him, and placed a 7 day notice to vacate, on our door. He had changed the locks to the apartment! We called him, talked, said we were leaving and wanted a refund for remaining month, he agreed. Never refunded our money. Airbnb will not help you as a guest. We have everything documented. Do not use this company or CJ. Complete fraud. Airbnb is the same. Remember, check everything if you use Airbnb. CLS Inc and this fraud CJ need to go.
Absolutely the worst experience ever! Customer Service NO help at all. Safety is of no concern from Airbnb! Even if you feel unsafe at the property, oh well…., you are SOL! $2666 for one night stay out of 11 days and not willing to refund any part of what I paid! I will never use Airbnb again!
The Hideaway Inglewood CA -NEVER STAY HERE! Unsafe neighborhood, garage full of crap you can't even park in it. Try to Park in the drive way and you are one inch away from the neighbors car!
My husband and I both felt unsafe at this location, the neighborhood is ghetto, dirty, and scary! We didn't feel comfortable with parking outside as the garage that was promised in the listing was full of crap which made it impossible for any car to park in there. We contacted the host immediately and of course first response is about no refunds.
Your view as you step out the house, pictured below.
I had to depart a listing early because I felt unsafe and I was being discriminated against. I took the case up with Airbnb who supposedly have an antidiscrimination policy but they dismissed my case without even following up with me. I had and still have plenty of documentation. Then they took down my review of the awful listing (which by the way mysteriously had a 4.99 rating, which is why I booked it) because it mentioned the word "race," even though my experience was based on my race. Talk about censorship! Reviews are the only way for consumers to know what they are getting into with a listing so they are advertising false safety by taking down legitimate reviews that they think will hurt their business. Basically they are deceptive in their dealings and are scamming consumers IN ADDITION TO destroying cities by pushing ordinary people out for heartless and predatory landlords.
The first and last time I will use Airbnb The place I booked was a dump with a dirty mattress and furniture outside. Big broken dumpster 30' from front door. And surrounding units were broken down. Would not allow my dog to stay there yet alone mmm family for a vacation. I spoke with Airbnb and showed them pictures and did not help me if one bit.
My husband and I arranged a rental through Airbnb in late February for two weeks (March 16 onward) in Massachusetts. We paid fully. On March 7 we got a notice from them that the "host had cancelled the reservation". No reason given. We were told in subsequent notices that we would receive a full refund (we have not received anything), would be assisted in finding new lodging (were not helped, and finding new lodging at this point was very difficult), and that we would receive a $200.00 coupon to use with our new rental as long as the fee was of equal or greater value to the original reservation. We found the new rental, the price was of greater value than the original reservation, but the coupon wouldn't work in their system. After numerous hours by phone, online, etc., their customer service "made up" a number for the original lease (and would not even tell us where/how they came up with that number) and that our new rental was less expensive by $200 than the first. This was not true and I sent them the documents to prove it. They told me they were not interested, would not continue the conversation, and closed the case. This is very poor customer service and we certainly will not be using their services another time.
Schedule an reservations with Airbnb with a Super-host! Arrived to Unit and a Eviction notice is stuck to the door, threaten for the police to come kick me out! Guys standing outside the building, Key left under Mat! I called and expressed my safety concerns the rep shows not concern! Told me she will have someone call me back, 2 hours later no call back no refund no nothing! This is so upsetting! I don't know where I am and not safe at all.
I can't get hold of anyone to discuss this issue so if Airbnb are reading this (which I highly doubt) please call me! I went to book accommodation on their site and the payment was taken but the booking was not made. I spent an hour on the phone to them and finally got through to someone who said they're had been an error and I would be refunded in 15 days. I was not given the option of making the booking. I was told to make it again on a different card, which I tried to twice, got the same error message and two more amounts of £500 were taken from my account!
I have spend all day on the phone trying to get hold of someone to help me but without success. Every time I speak with someone I get told I must go on hold to speak with someone else.
I am just being passed around to different people no of whom can help me get my money back or make the booking for me.
It is absolutely criminal! I am really disgusted by this poor and fraudulent service. Trying to resolve this issue has made me feel so ill today.
Hello, I spent my first night at your listing, and I got to say I am extremely disappointed.
To start off with, There were no the functional couches? This couch was not functional, it was either missing a cushion, or I don't know what the hell it was. One person cant even sit comfortably and extend their feet, they call that a couch? Or when you open it up it has a giant hole because it needs a cushion that is missing. You can't call that a bed!
The bedroom was so cold and gets no heat, while the living room is super hot, we had no choice but to sleep in the living room, with the hosts treasure chest in the middle as a cushion. That is ridiculous, we had to sleep partially on a table in the middle of the night.
Second problem, there was no cutting boards, no mixing bowls, no knives ( the tiny butter knives you have are not knives) that is not a functional kitchen whatsoever, I didnt expect a fancy stove, but these are basic kitchen needs. What are you supposed to cut on?
On The dirty counters that the host left? Or all of the dishes that are greasy and have stains on them?
Third of all, the Coffee machine is broken and is not making coffee.
Fourth of all, the host mentioned how this place needs to be quiet, I don't know who lives on top of their unit, but there is clearly no children, and I don't know who jumps at two in the morning and drags furniture and makes this much noise unless they are drug addicts or ppl who dont sleep all night.
I took videos for evidence of when the unit upstairs does laundry, the whole unit here shakes and makes a very loud sound, that is impossible to sleep. We did not sleep all the nights.
I have reached out to the host and Airbnb and they only suggested a 30% discount!
This was a whole month stay booking! 3,000$.
Horrible!
And at the end of this, Airbnb didn't allow me to post any reviews after my first attempt with a review because it was against their rules.
The rule was not to mention about the noise from neighbors because that wasn't in the hosts control. And the other rule was because I messaged the host saying I would write a review about the issues. Since when it's not allowed to review your horrible stay?
This is fraud!
My husband and I are going on vacation i was looking at Airbnb as I have never used them before but heard great things. I found a place, created my account and then we booked. Our card was charged. I got a confirmation email then not 30 seconds later I got an email saying my account was deactivated. Spent 45 min on the phone with customer service to have no resolution. We created an account with my husband and the same thing happened. Now we have 2 charges on our credit card for Airbnb and are expected to wait up to 15 days for our refund. Stay away from Airbnb. We like many work hard for our money and they are quick to take it but don't want to return it. No reasonable explanation was given as to why our accounts where deactivated. STAY AWAY.
The worst customer service I have ever experienced all they do is apologize for not helping you and send you b******* articles on their policies which make no sense they wouldn't honor a $62 coupon they gave me for my host not canceling because it wasn't applied at the time of rebooking but I wasn't sent it until after re booking if you have a problem just swallow it they're not going to help you with anything
Renter beware! We are writing this review, so that others are not put in the same position we were put in. We stayed with our cousins and small children. The house is not small child safe as there are electrical outlets without covers on them (read previous reviews he says he fixed them -that is a lie). The bathroom in the main bedroom has live electrical wires coming out of the wall uncapped (which we capped to keep our children safe). There is only 1 egress out of the bedroom if their was a fire. Bunk beds in the area of the stairwell. We arrived to no heat in the main part of the house and they left a space heater to heat the kitchen and living room. The caretaker was supposed to come over and he never showed up. There was molding with nails sticking up laying in the pool area. The hot tub didn't work properly (no jets and lights) and when we told him he said "I ordered the part and it should be here soon". He did not notify us in advance that it was not properly working. The kids found glass bottles, garbage and even old food throughout the house. There are to many other issues to list, but we wanted to list our main safety concerns. He agreed to refund us 1 nights stay and the cleaning fee. When it came down to the last minute he changed the amount and refunded us only the cleaning fee and $100 more. He was also telling us that he would give us money back if we agreed to not leave a review. The House is not a luxury house as advertised it is basically an unfinished house with bedrooms and an indoor pool.
I've used airbnb for years with only a mild issue here and there. Finally my turn on the roulette wheel came and I got stuck with a filthy, unsafe space. Notified immediately and left that squatter shack and asked for full refund and help rebooking. Took 24 hours of constant calls and messages to get full refund and NEVER got help rebooking ended up booking hotels for $200-400 ZERO help from airbnb ZERO coupons offered to offset costs and frustration. Don't gamble with your vacay, your time on the roulette wheel of getting fuqt by airbnb might come soon. Save the hassle and just book a hotel b/c yolo! Airbnb customer service reps have a rep for not being helpful and now I know why give it a google before you waste your next vacay!
First time using this product waited 2 days before leaving my home to cancel booking would not help my find another place to stay.We we're going as a family for daughters graduation to recieve her doctorate. I would not recommend this Airbnb company to anyone
Airbnb customer support sucks. They are too quick to close a ticket without resolution and it seems as they don't value hosts. They value guests and fees. I am considering switching to another platform.
First time using this place. The system could not verify my identity so reservation canceled. But Airbnb did not need to verify my identity to take $750.11 from my bank, definitely a backwards. Reservation canceled and still no money refunded to my account day 5, I call ever few hours and get told a different time frame 2hr., 6hrs., 12hrs, 10days(I flipped out on this response) I need the money for my trip I truly can not believe how this company works. There is no headquarters told when I asked to speak with the company. Did say a supervisor will contact you in 3 hrs. I can not believe a company like this in 2022 does not have a specialized department that handles the issuin of refunds. I'm filing with my bank as soon as they open to file a dispute see if it's possible to file a complaint with BBB because this is terrible customer care and a company that handles such large transactions should be more educated and prompt along with precise including a Supervisor to oversee transactions. How can you take money without verification of my identity confirmed before remove large amounts of money out of my account. Terrible terrible terrible
HOST CANCELED ON HE 2 HOURS BEFORE GOING ON VACATION, THEN NEW LOFT FILLED WITH POT SMELL AND STRIPPER POLE IN MIDDLE OF KITCHEN. CUSTOMER SERVICE SUCKS, FIGHTING TO GET FUNDS BACK. DO NOT USE AIRBNB!
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
