Airbnb Reviews Summary

Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Good Afternoon, I work for Guardian Property Management Inc in Kitchener, Ontario Canada. We have a tenant who rented a two bedroom condominium apartment for himself on a one year lease. The condominium management company and board of directors brought it to our attention that our tenant does not live in the unit but immediately started advertising the unit on VRBO and Airbnb. We contacted VRBO and explained to the company that our tenant does not have the owners permission to rent out his unit. We also explained that this activity goes against the condominium rules and regulations which the tenant has signed. VRBO promptly removed the listing. We then approached Airbnb and received the response that they cannot take down the listing. Only the host can take down the listing. I am writing this review in hopes that Airbnb will change their policy to prevent Illegal Airbnb Listings. Thank you for taking the time to read my review. Joanne

Airbnb will always take the side of the host. I arrived at the Airbnb home of M. W. in Ocala, FL last Friday evening. Her home was pitch black inside and out. I knew she had 2 dogs but I didn't know her dogs would be the only ones home and greet me at the door barking aggressively. (I later learned they are Pitbull mixes.) When I unlocked the door and cracked it open I knew I was in a risky situation and immediately closed the door and locked it. As a dog trainer I knew a stranger walking into a dark home with dogs of any breed barking like they were was not safe. I messaged the host on the app but got no response. I left and went to a hotel. A message from her was finally received a day and a half later. To make this long story short. I posted a negative review for the host on Airbnb causing her to become very irate. She did refund my payment but later said she would cancel the refund (which was not possible). She continued to harass me on the Airbnb app. I was told to block her by Airbnb so I did. She then found me on Facebook and sent me a Facebook message continuing the harassment. Airbnb said they could not do anything, to contact police. I blocked her on Facebook and somehow she found my cell number and then texted me and left me a nasty voicemail. Airbnb again said there was nothing they could do. To top it all off I later got a message from Airbnb that said they removed my review for inappropriate content. I read the link they sent explaining what is inappropriate and I still didn't see how I had violated their policies for reviews. I asked them if I could edit my review to meet their requirements and to tell me specifically how I was in violation. They said I could not, nor could I post a new review and would not tell me specifically what was wrong with my review. I don't believe there was anything wrong with my review. Either she harassed them until they removed it and/or they only care about hosts earning more money for them. I chose this host partly on her stunning reputation shown by her reviews, which I now know are skewed. My situation was unsafe and handled very poorly by Airbnb.

Buyer beware cancellation policy has 4 different versions. Regardless of what the promo tells you they renigged on the refund and stated the host(Trudy Cozy Kona Kai retreat) goes by the firm. Mean while she is sending me messages telling me I should get a refund and differed all back to AirBnB which then lies to you. Sad how they make you select 1
Star as a
Minimum. Airbnb as changed through out Covid. Not a good business model now.

Airbnb policy on removing reviews
May 10, 2022

We recently stayed at an airbnb in la Jolla San diego. The area is exceptional however this airbnb on Taft st. In birdrock fell well short of the mainly 5 star reviews given. If you look closer at the reviews after staying there you can tell there's a disconnect with the property and the reviews. We posted a 3 star review for the unit in question and were immediately harassed by the owner. She offered money back to take the review down however in hindsight I think the review should have stayed. The owner gave us half of the agreed amount prior to removal and then ghosted us after. When we approached airbnb they basically said we needed to contact them upon arrival so they could send us elsewhere. I appreciate that however when you're on vacation and just arrive at 830pm the last thing you want to do is start looking for another place wasting precious vaca time. Add insult to injury, after taking down the review and not getting our full amount agreed upon airbnb said we couldn't have the review reposted nor could we post another review. BS

I don't usually write reviews but we had the worst experience ever. Our host canceled on us less than a week before our booking when everything had been fully paid. Airbnb was taking forever to respond. All similar places by then were double the price. Airbnb didn't want to cover the difference. Our flights were none-refundable. They refused to cover the cost of our flights. We lost so much money bcz of them. Never ever using their services again, worst site and worst customer service ever.

I WAS TRYING TO FIND A CHEAP PLACE FOR ME AND MY HUSBAND AND I FOUND MULTIPLE PLACES, BUT WHEN I PUT THE STAY TIME IN IT CHARGED THE PRICE UP HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS. A $16 NIGHT STAY CHANGED TO A $300 A NIGHT STAY. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE SCAM. REPORT! TAKING THEM TO COURT. This company will be mine.

They deleted my account for no reason
May 5, 2022

Up until this point I had no issues with Air BnB. I loved the interface and it was really easy to find local places to stay. I had a perfect score and basically 0 issues with the owners. If there was issues we talked it out and got to a place where we were both happy. So I don't understand what happened next.

When I recently tried to log into my account I was told I was locked out. When I emailed AirBnB they said they would look into it. A day later I got an email saying my account was deleted with no explanation why! I found a number to call and I got the same "we'll look into it" and again I got another email saying the account has been deleted. I literally had no warning that this was going to happen, or given any chance to do something about it before it became a problem. I had made so many wonderful connections with one of the owners and now it's all gone.

I tried making a new account and they said I was locked out of that too (it probably remembers my name and phone number.

Basically I'm really disappointed and angry there is nothing I can do. I really liked Air BnB but now they lost another customer.

Never Again
May 4, 2022

Did you know that your host can just cancel your rental at any time with and face absolutely no repercussions? It's true. I booked a rental in April 2021 for May 2022. I paid it up front 100% months before it was due. I received a message today saying "Too bad, the owner of the property wants to stay there that week so find somewhere else to stay." Seriously. Less than three weeks before my trip they cancelled my reservation. They didn't offer up another one either. Just cancelled. To add insult to injury, when I called Airbnb, they said it would be 15 days to get my refund. They're holding my money 15 days. Money I paid months ago. I will never ever use Airbnb. Beware that the same thing can happen to you.

Wrong Pin Locations
May 4, 2022

DO not trust the general location pins for properties. Just found one over 20 miles from the pin location. Property owner says Airbnb sets the pin locator, Airbnb says owner sets the actual location. Who knows the truth. Missed the 48 hours cancellation. Fee is $700 or drive hours during the week. Airbnb offered $30 coupon for their HUGE mistake/action to reap cancellation fees. Will contact owner for exact location before ever booking with them again. DO NOT TRUST THEM.

We live in a culdesac of 5 houses. Two are now full time AirBnB's. One is owner occupied and that host is a great neighbor. The other is investor. There's been an issue with trespassing guests. Owner occupied, direct contact and understanding about this issue. Investor host became hostile. Fast forward to a gram and a half of crystal meth found in front of the investor property. Called the sheriffs department to collect it. Contact the host (the only way to do so is having an Airbnb account and using contact host option) to let the host know significant drugs were located in front of the house possibly by the cleaners. The hosts response has been threat of harassment lawsuit, being reported to local law enforcement, etc. AirBnB just gives lip service. No one is actually helping normal people who own their houses. We are going to go full on opposition.

Sleeping in filth
April 26, 2022

Our kids gave us a wedding present gift card from Air BnB to use for a getaway. We chose to stay in Stoney Creek NY at the Moon Shadow Lodge.
It took us 15 miles of country road without lighting to get there. When we arrived the place from the outside looked like a dump n so did the inside!
We were told a cleaning team had cleaned the place. If I could post pics all of you would die! It was dirty, dusty, spots n spills on rugs. Floor had mouse droppings and birdseed throughout the place. The bedroom had mouse droppings. The sink in the kitchen had food left in it from previous occupant.
When we pulled down the covers on the bed …dried up blood stains were on the sheets! Pet hair on mattress n mattress pad. I have never witnessed a place to take advantage of customers as I did with Air BnB. My husband n I will never ever us them!
We lost $273.88 our kids gave us…I left after the first night as soon as the sun came up!

I wrote them 10 times, they ignore and don't return money 2 months already. They stole my money. Why government do not close so fraudulent company and do not prosecute this criminals?

If you rent through Airbnb, you need to take lots of notes AND pictures! If you discover an issue past the 1st "few hours" arrival mark, and you haven't already called Airbnb cust service, you are screwed! Seriously, we had issues upon arrival, but didn't know "how bad" things really were till the next day, and they (Airbnb) DID NOT CARE! They tell you to message your host... so you DO... THEN, when you follow up with Airbnb for resolution (when the host isn't resolving things), they WILL NOT help you because "you didn't contact Airbnb directly when the issue was known (even if you did call... and also did exactly what Airbnb Customer Service directed you to do). There are so many GREAT hosts, but there are also so many BAD hosts too! But YOU don't know until you are "in it" and they already have your $$$$!
Airbnb absolutely knows about repeat issues with bad hosts, but they simply "don't want to be involved" as it will lessen the $$$$ that is their cut. The relationship Airbnb has with its HOSTS is far more important (to Airbnb) than making YOU (the REAL Customer) happy (happy meaning - you expect to get what you paid for... and what was "advertised"! - what a concept!) - Immediately follow up in writing... if you are on a call (with Airbnb), they will "say whatever" to make you happy... then deny it was ever said! Follow up within the app... always get the name of the person you spoke to... and note the time too. Documentation Matters!
I will forever be a Consumer advocate and speak up (Good AND Bad)... you should too! Give good (even so so) reviews when you can... overlook the "small stuff" - but let future renters know what to expect by sharing YOUR experience... it's the only way to make a difference!
Do your research people... and save your $$

One more thing - I had already booked (and paid for) another Airbnb before the above incident... it was a lovely experience and I gave the host (not Airbnb) a 5-star review.
I was an Airbnb supporter before all this!

Refund policy tricky. Missed refund deadline fir a full refund by 12 hours, my fault, however the $553 I put as deposit was kept…the trickery in the wording I wont receive any money back. Property management KM Properties Bass Lake should be embarrassed to keep that kind of money from a patron. Keep a night $250 but not $553! Terrible business and policy. Done with Airbnb. Last 2 places were terrible too. Looked nothing like pictures and descriptions misleading. Plenty of other places to stay dont need them.

FRAUD
April 22, 2022

To whom it may concern,
I cancelled my Airbnb and to make sure of it, I called Wells Fargo to go ahead and make sure they did not take the money off my card. The representative that reversed the charges told me specifically do not worry about it, this happens all of the time if you cancelled you will get all of your monies back, which I did. However, Airbnb went back in and took my money back out. This is not ethical and straight up FRAUD and someone has to be accountable for this. I am requesting at this time for you to please return my monies. Please refer to the attachment of the letter. I am the victim and either way you look at it this is straight up fraud. I would like to get this resolved immediately please advise.

We rented a property in Jacksonville it's the house hosted by Dexter. We paid $700 for the weekend stay we arrive to the property and there is an intoxicated man sitting on the stairway telling us that the lady of the house is not there at the moment and we could not go in. I called Airbnb immediately because we had children staying with us and was directed by Airbnb to get off the property and go to safety. We did exactly that we did not feel safe. I did an instant book on another property it looked very good went ahead and purchased it. I tried to get my money back from the other property and they said that because I didn't have video of the drunk man that I would not be refunded. Now they're asking me to video of someone on private property. I'm not an attorney but I believe that's illegal and no way were we going to antagonize a drunk man, And that was the reason they're not refunding me. Watch the news right now about what happened on a property at an Airbnb. Seriously it made national news. I cannot say all stays are bad, some of them were amazing. But not knowing the property before you go can cost you a lot of money if it's not a safe spot for you and your family. Because if there is a safety issue they will not, based on my experience, give you your money back. So you either pay for another place or you risk it and stay on the property. We weren't Taking that risk at that time with kids and after watching the news and seeing what happened to the guy at the Airbnb I'm glad we didn't.

I booked for this first time ever this past spring in March for my birthday. We went and ate at Restuarant and came back to the Airbnb and relaxed the rest of the night. I took my nightly shower and water ended up all over the floor despite how careful I was to not get it anywhere. I slipped and fell into the sink and accidently cracked the mirror. It was a minor crack in the mirror and was a total accident. The host then told me I owed only $400 and then took it back and said I owed $1200. I talked to Airbnb resolutions and they "did their research" and came to a conclusion that I owed $1410. That is just an outrageous amount for a small bathroom mirror. I will NEVER book with Airbnb again! Make sure the host you are booking thru is valid and has had renters before! This was the most unprofessional stay I have ever encountered! The room I booked wasn't even $250, I don't see how they came out with a price 5x the price of the stay!
