Airbnb's reputation is significantly marred by persistent complaints regarding its customer service and the quality of listings. Customers frequently express frustration over inadequate support, particularly in resolving issues related to cleanliness and safety at properties. Many report feeling unsafe or misled by inaccurate listings, leading to financial losses and dissatisfaction. Conversely, some users have had positive experiences with Airbnb Luxe, highlighting exceptional service and quality accommodations. Overall, while there are isolated instances of satisfaction, the overarching sentiment reflects a concerning trend of unreliable service and a lack of accountability towards both guests and hosts.

Do NOT use Airbnb. It is a mess and filled with scamming hosts and the company will not help you get your money back. Do not book. Please use something else to book. There is no oversight to this operation. It's just anarchy and craziness. Just left my illegal Airbnb after the building told me it wasn't even allowed there. Can't get refunded. Host is unresponsive and a total lying jerk. Spare yourself this grief.
My home is fraudulently posted on Airbnb. After 7 days contacting Airbnb and the person who posted my home my address is still listed along with the exact location of my home on the map. Homeowners beware I have NEVER listed my home on this site and NEVER been a host. The code enforcement officer of my city contacted me stating I illegally have advertised my home on the website. Airbnb protects the host not homeowners. I question the period they require of a host before listing a home, my address should have never been posted let alone the exact location. This makes me so nervous for my home and my family's safety. Homeowners keep an eye on your property on Airbnb!
I travel a lot and generally speaking, I have a modest and moderate expectation of the rooms I stay in. I have a high threshold for what one would consider a bad stay or bad enough to write a negative review. Don't mistaken that for not knowing the difference between high quality service and a great deal on a real nice room and lowering standards and sleeping in a horrible room; that's definitely not happening.
My issues are not so much with the listers, even though they have gotten real excessive with their cleaning fees, as they are with Airbnb themselves. They have gotten so ridiculous with their extra tacked on fees that not only does the renter suffer but so does the lister because they're also getting hit with those fees, plus the renter may move on because they refuse to pay 50% of the cost of the room in fees, or in some cases, just about as much as the room, so you're basically paying double than what's advertised. It's Airbnb's greed that's going to bury them.
ABNB blocked me from booking $450/night condo for my wife and child over Memorial weekend on account of "high risk parties" algorithm. Offered me to book rooms as though I am college kid. Discriminate against users and horrible service line of BS. I have over 50 + reviews in last two years that are all perfect and ALWAYS book our own places. They also deprived the host of said revenue and the host property went vacant for the holiday. The reasons were bunk and would not fix it. Use VRBO.
Airbnb advertises a supervision of their hosts with partial or full refunds for inaccurate claims by the hosts but this advertisement seems false since we received no reimbursement or acknowledgement for our hosts false claims and lack of attention to correcting the problems. It is difficult to find harsh or extremely critical reviews on the Airbnb site because the reviews are not published if Airbnb does not find it beneficial to them and their hosts. Therefore, every critical statement in review seems to be sugar coated. They will now only be an absolute last resort for my family.
Airbnb's facially neutral policies to screen out customers with past criminal convictions form a disparity impact on those customers denying them services. It is no mystery that human beings make mistakes; condemning them to a lifelong stigma for that mistake is discriminatory and Denys that person services provided and a quality of life that only "some" can enjoy.
The hosts' house smelled like witchcraft and she had pictures of her god on the front door and inside the kitchen. When I complained to her, she said it was the plug-in which it was not. She refused to give me a refund. I called Airbnb and they told me I was discriminating against her because of her religion. The host doesn't even live in the house so what's the purpose of having all that in there. I tried to get a refund again from the host but she refused and verbally attacked me stating repeatedly that I was a liar and that her home smelled great and that she has a 5 star review and that I was the problem and tried to get a refund from day one yada yada. I was even kind enough to put her key back in her smelly home and not on the street.
Beware Airbnb. I booked an Airbnb for October, then had to cancel that reservation. The cancellation went in four months before my booking started and yet I was charged $4000 for the first month. The cancelation policy is unclear. But what is clear is that I am done with Airbnb.
I would rate them lower than 1 if it was an option. Booked a property for 20 nights. Paid. Cancelled with no reason given. Booked a another property for the same 20 nights. Paid. Cancelled again after sitting on it for 4 weeks. Very hard to make overseas plans when all I get is cancellations. The least I could expect is an explanation.
Did you know the only thing that protects the renter is a $50 or $100 cancelation fee to the host. The host could literally cance hours before check in and the only thing they get punished with is a $100 fee from ABnB? Meanwhile as a renter I was left with no family vacation. Increased nightly expenses. Change of flight fees. I will never rent from ABnB again.
My family stayed at Shane & Lauren hosted guest house for 4 days, when we stayed in san Diego for my daughter's spring break in 2022. The women host came to talk to me, dressed like she was going a nightclub, looking for a man(i felt that way). She saying the reason she came was because i parked on the property's parking lot, which is dedicated to her husband, and i can move it anytime later before her man came home. I did not like that, and coldly told her that i would move my car. After we left the property, she asked 3 times for a review. I did not want to have any communication with her, so i ignored it. Three months later, i found her made up a feedback stating that we left coke can on her property and parked on drive way! We are very healthy professional family (both my wife and me are doctors) and have not touched coke for maybe five years. How can i have a can? I also never left any trash behind in my over fourty years of life!
I contacted airbnb and told them what happened. They never gave me any chance to leave a public feedback or even response to the review! I was very angry and felt abused! I feel that my fourty years of reputation was destroyed by a mad woman that i talked for 30 seconds.
My 9-year-old son and 8 other friends/teammates where were discriminated against and harassed while staying at an Airbnb hosted by a strange woman named Nabi who physically assaulted my 9-year-old and other children at the address listed below:
******* Maryland 108, Clarksville, MD
Which I later found the actual mailing address for online below:
******* State Route 108 Clarksville, MD *******
The team mom along with the coaches planned a sleep over for the boys to cheer them up from losing their football games Saturday. Our intentions were to lift their spirits by bringing them together for a sleep over the night before their next game. However, unfortunately my son along with his coach, a team mom, and the rest of his teammates were not shown hospitality, respect, dignity, or even common curtesy.
I'm outraged that I had to drive 3 hours back and forth to from Washington, D. C. to Clarksville, M. D. at 10:00 p.m. Friday evening.
The fact that this woman thinks in 2022 it's okay to inappropriately touch and throw 9-year-old little black boys out in the dark cold woods at 10:00 p.m. with nowhere to go, no way home, and without them even knowing where they were, is terribly disgusting to me.
I feel like they were only treated that way because of their African American descent simply because she called the police on the kids and had them escorted off her property as if they were criminals or did something wrong. Which I find very disturbing because I didn't know that Airbnb didn't allow little black boys to stay on their property once the reservation has already been confirmed and paid for.
I'm assuming this is how they treat little black boys in Clarksville, MD.
NEVER AGAIN WHAT EVER YOU DO, DO NOT STAY AT ******* State Route 108
Clarksville, MD *******
No protection for guests, incredibly terrible customer service. The host changed the listing after i booked it. Changed it from entire apartment to a shared room, changed all photos, didnt respond to a single communicatiom i sent him. Airbnb customer sevice did nothing about it after 2 weeks of investigating. They said the host is not responding to them so they cant do anything about it! I had to cancel a week before my trip and book it elsewhere 3 times more the price as it was on the last minute. Airbnb must be taken to the court for illegal activities under their watch. No more Airbnb for me. All levels of government must ban Airbnb. Unreliable and useless
AirBnB is loosing its perks. It has become a platform neither protect the consumers nor the hosts. Long story short, I travel quite some times for business and prefer to cook my own meals, so I like to have a big kitchen wherever I go, especially with my families. I started liking AirBnB since 2016 and had one or two amazing experiences, with no problems, though actually the prices were more expensive than 4-star hotels. After that, everywhere I travel within the Americas became nightmares. Yes, as a guests I receive quite amount of good reviews. Because guess what? I didn't even stay in there most the time...
So shame on you AirBnB. More expensive than hotels and absolutely no guarantee of quality service of any kind.
AirBnB charges both the consumers and the hosts, quite a chunk, especially for extensive stays. But guess what service they provide? Nothing. If there is any problem during the stay or the ad is inaccurate that when you check in, it looks nothing like on the picture; AirBnB Does Not Care. So there you go. You paid a lot of money for your trip but end up without a place to actually sleep well. You either have to look for a hotel somewhere or stay in a small sofa trying to rest because there is no decent service about cleaning and maintenance. There is no rules about that. You complain to the hosts and they could treat you whatever they like. AirBnB Doesn't Care.
Even though you paid a large cleaning fee, most of the hosts would ask you to clean everything including putting everything in the laundry, clean the bathroom towels, clean all the dishes and etc etc. So you don't even know where the cleaning fee went.
When you want to put a bad review, everybody is offended these days. You can put negative 1 star review, AirBnB still Doesn't Care... You will not get your money back.
I'm sure 2 years after 2020, there has been some trust issues worldwide. So I understand that hosts sometimes fear that their guests might be not following rules or are troublemakers. But guess what? Hosts are not protected either. AirBnB just take a chunk from both sides and leave all the problems to you guys. As a platform it is not honest or safe; has bugs that still not fixed; no measures to protect consumers and hosts.
So this is what happened when a company set out to do good and innovative, now again, turned into a corporate machine. Of course, their stocks are fine now, until real competitions kick in.
Our neighbor advertised his house for rent on Airbnb. A shooting resulted which caused damage to 5 different neighbor properties. The host tells us Airbnb is to blame. Airbnb will not respond to claims submitted.
The company promis to cantactet me alredy 1 week and nobady contacted me. I calldes 6 times and i wrote a massege in chaine. The answer is 1-* We transwer you to another team, and they will call you.*
Im waiting 1 week and nobady colled me and in the chain nobady answer to me. I have a vauther and i booked appartment and then cancel. And now my vouther dissapiered. They promis to retern me in 2 hours but its already 1 week and no refund.
So bad service. I wait for that vouther 2 mounth and wven the vouther comed the company Airbin did not show me the vouther and dont want to henl ar explain me where is my vouther. The just promis to call me back.
I had experienced at so many lack of solutions, rudeness, time consuming, being on the phone hrs to after all that time received. You can even try the prompts and does not get you any where. I try email them and does not work either.
Please do not book with them, if there is a problem you will either loose your money and or your reservation. I have a rental and they even send me a tax for, that I gave to my tax assistant and after submitting my taxes, Arbnb sent me a note saying to disregard the tax form as it was not properly done. One rentr made damage in my bathroom home and caused a flood, and their suppose coverage never worked, yes, that million dollars they claim they will have on your property. So far it has been a horrid experience: hrs in the phone with same issue and then after you spell your name, address, and give them pin codes, they have no absolutely idea how to resolve your issue and later they will send you an email saying that your issue will be solved in a couple of business days. Yes, that issue that you already spent hrs in the phone and proving emails and receiving codes. The should not be in business at all because they only cause problems, headaches and make owners loose more, get damaged their properties and devalue the time spending with the, They should just go bankrupt.
Elizabeth
Here is the last email I sent to Airbnb,
Thank you for your help. I am sorry that it come to this. But it is for the best, for me and my family. I would never endanger my family or let my property be used for a "pot house" illegal activity. It is sad to learn that Airbnb would expect their Host to accommodate guest that all criminals and break the Law. I will be sure to rate Airbnb on Google and any other site that has a ratings review and tell as many people as I know about Airbnb Policy to Block Host and allow guest to smoke drugs in on the Host's property. Please Do Not send me anymore Emails or Text. My account is Blocked, why can I still Login? Why does Airbnb insist on sending me Unsolicited Communications? Again, Do Not Contact me for any reason. Consider this a Cease and Desist.
I sent a message to the Airbnb costumer service 4 days ago and until today I haven't heard of them..
You don't know how the houses are and they only put photos that the owners send but airbnb doesn't refund all money that you have paid more airbnb does not have people who inspect the houses to verify that they are 100% safe in health and everything but look how they defrauded me with a houses that the basement was full of garbage, broken pipes stink of $#*! and urine, a bathroom didn't work, I don't know how the city government allows this where there are as many bacteria as meningitis, E. Coli that can infect
Answer: AirBnB is the worst. You might be able to go to the resolution centre, but previous posts are correct. Watch your money with them. Once they make an error it's hard to get it back. You may have to go through the credit card you charged it to and even then the dispute process might take awhile. Hopefully, you have other money to use in the mean time or the date of your trip is at least weeks out? They are asking you to "verify your ID" so they can gain access to your linked in, Facebook and google contacts. They say it's a security measure to protect you and everyone else but it's not. They are pirating your info. They take your contacts and use it as a marketing tool for themselves or sell the contacts to other distributors. It's very common with sites like this now. If you want to continue using AirBnB you have no choice unfortunately.
Answer: Being a host, I can say that when things are going good, all is great, but if something goes wrong, as a host, you will not get the support from Airbnb that is promised. They do not stand behind their hosts, I find they like to a facade that all is great in the land of Airbnb. I have cancelled my listing and will not deal with them anymore in the future.
Answer: As a host & licensed realtor with multiple properties in both Los Angeles & Las Vegas which I book directly and also have listed with multiple vacation rental agencies, SAVE YOURSELF TIME, MONEY & AGGRAVATION by booking either DIRECTLY with the host or through other REPUTABLE Agencies, such as Roomorama.
Answer: I haven't been a host, but would certainly recommend that you read ALL the reviews here before getting involved with Airbnb. I can't think of ANY business of ANY type I would patronize that got a 1.5 star rating after 382 reviews.
Answer: They offered $25 discount of next booking I just chose to go else where
Answer: You don't. The only thing that you can be sure of is that if you have a problem Airbnb will be unreachable. They hide from dissatisfied customers and hosts alike. You are taking big chances when you deal with them. The benefits just aren't worth the risks.
Answer: No, you would be lucky and have to fight to get a refund if you cancel 1 day after you make the reservation!
Answer: Hello, First, the credit card co. Needs to be notified and will refund the amount spent. In turn, the cc co. Will backcharge. Airbnb is notorious for these types transactions and should be shutdown. Your son has learned a business lesson... research a business prior to do business!
Answer: This is the root of my problem with AIRBNB. They do not check to see if a host can legitimately rent the place they are advertising. In my experience, the host cancelled 48 hours before, claimed she was going to be evicted if she rented to me. I was only 3000 miles from home. AIRBNB offered me a 10% discount to rebook another place. I did not and will not use them again.
Answer: Susan's answer is very thorough and I agree with her. Even more important when booking places outside your country of origin to ensure you don't get a flea pit. Also, always look at the reviews, they are very important. If there is a really bad review, don't stay there. You need to check the locations online as well. You don't want to be in a bad, dangerous area... this just happened to someone staying in Philadelphia. If you have a problem, the AirBnB website is useless. Google the AirBnB customer service number from your location. Renee
