Western Union Reviews Summary

Western Union's reputation is markedly mixed, with a significant number of customers expressing frustration over service delays, unresponsive customer support, and unresolved transaction issues. Many reviews highlight a lack of accountability and transparency, particularly regarding refunds and the status of transfers. Conversely, some users report successful transactions and satisfactory experiences, particularly with the app's functionality and customer service in specific instances. Overall, while there are positive experiences, the prevailing sentiment suggests that the company must address systemic inefficiencies and improve customer communication to enhance trust and reliability.

Their pre-registration process is tedious, requiring you to upload a passport of driver's license (their camera kept saying out of memory and I had to taker a picture of my passport and send it separately). Worse, they never checked the passport info but some how adding a "e" to my last name by themselves. I had to make many phone calls to find out why my credit card rejected payment and each time a staffer gave a different reason. In trying to save money, they hire people whose English is often incomprehensible even though Western Union is the most expensive in terms of foreign exchange rate and commission (3%). It took two days of back and forth to finally get the money to be sent to Tokyo, and the charged 4,800 yens more than their competitors like Remitly. Never use Western again.

I am building a house in the Philippines with my wife. We are to be married in about 10 days after we get our wedding license. After sending money for 6 months and answering their stupid fraud questions every time, they decided to deny my last transfer for the last amount I tried to send. I was livid. Nothing had changed. The house is almost finished and I needed money for the wedding also. I even asked to speak to a supervisor. After a while, I got so frustrated I lost it. If they want to work for a company run by idiots, they deserved the earful they got. Then, I receive an e-mail saying the transfer went through. I didn't trust them and sent more money via WISE. I don't care if it cost me $30. It was worth not dealing with Western Union. Deposits from both Western Union and WISE arrived about 2 hours later. I didn't even have to wait a week like I do for western union. Western Union is the worst! I will never use them again.

Invasion of privacy
August 8, 2023

I would like Western Union to look into the script of third-party organization contracted by this organization requesting information from individuals that violates both the Western Union and Global Privacy Statement. It clearly states the type of information that may be required by the organization. The question asked by the authorize contracted agents are invading one's privacy and should be held liable. We are held hostage by your organization to answer question that is not relevant to identify fraud or in the scope of the privacy statement.
Question: In regard to privacy, why is Western Union invading individuals' privacy? There is a difference when it has to state, federal laws global and local privacy statements. There should be a class action against organizations that are indirectly forcing individuals to provide information beyond the scope required. The third party asked me how is the receipt related to me and it's not in accordance to the privacy terms and conditions or law?

Consumer warning: please be aware of western union money transfer. They have the options to transfer from debit visa to recipient debit visa/bank account but it always has an error and they debit my bank account. No transactions can be found under history. I do not know where my money is. Cash can only be pickup, which is very inconvenient. Consumer beware.

I have been using Western Union for many years with no issues. Now they area holding all money transfers because of scams. They don't even give you the ability to look at your account to make sure customer account information is correct. You don't even get to talk to a customer service person in the US. I will not use this company ever again. I will even let my friends know not to us them. They do not deserve a one star rating. Holding customers hostage because of other people is wrong.

The Spanish inquisition of money transfer
June 28, 2023

Probably the worst app you could choose to transfer money by a mile.
Creating an account and sending money is very difficult and time consuming because they clearly thought I was Russian Mafia trying to send 30 euros to my girlfriend in the Philippines.
Endless security checks including photos of ID cards bank alerts etc etc ad infinitum.
Finally after endless box filling the tiny payment was approved to be put on hold immediately presumably because they need to contact the Spanish authorities of attempted money laundering. 5 hours later still on hold.
Had to send the money again by Remitly which was an absolute breeze to the delight of my Girlfriend and her immanent birthday.
Avoid it like the black death, an awful company and an awful app in all aspects.

Jumping thru hoops
June 26, 2023

If you ever buy a money order from Western Union and it's been stolen and cashed be prepared to jump thru hoops to get your back. Not only will you have to jump thru hoops you'll be $50 or more less richer, they not only will take a $15 fee if your money order is over $20 you'll have to pay for a photo copy of your money order which Is $15 once you see the money order has been forged you'll have to pay to have paperwork notorized. This makes absolutely no sense when they can see it's been forged then you'll have to wait another 90-120 days for them to make a decision, they almost go as far as if your the one who stole your own money order and your the criminal. I strongly believe Western Union wants you to give up and not pursue getting back your money otherwise why would they take a customer that purchased there product thru so much to get back money that's your's. Purchase there money orders at your own risk because if it's stolen be prepared to wait at least 3-4 months to get back your money.

I'm an agent at a store that uses western union (so i help customers make their transfers and money orders and whatnot) but their customer service helpline is really not very helpful. I had a customer picking up money and the system kept giving me an error code, and i called the help line - i went through three different agents over at least 30 minutes and all they did was tell me what the error code meant (which i knew, because it says it alongside the error code….) at the very end of the call, after i had this customer waiting at the desk for 30+ minutes, the only solution they could give me was to send the customer to a different location and it should work over there. I mean, c'mon! Sometimes the system is pretty finicky, but for the most part it works fine, so i'll balance it out to three stars ‍

The website always have technical issues. If you think you're going to receive your money after transferring it to your bank account and receive it the same day you're mistaken. The customer service representatives do absolutely nothing to help you. And if you think getting a supervisor to escalate the issue will fix it, you're on for a ride. The absolute worst part about this company is that they have so many locations on Google but 99% of them are inactive and they do nothing to update their location information so think of how much time and gas spent going from location to location just for them to tell you they don't have a WesternUnion.
I have used this company for over 15 years, but after being disappointed over and over again, I will NEVER use them again.

Horrible. Avoid.
June 15, 2023

Western Union made several rapid unauthorized withdrawals from my debit card account totaling more than $2,600. When I called to complain their representative was rude and unhelpful. The unauthorized withdrawals are clearly fraudulent and the company is still refusing to accept responsibility.

Awesomeness!
June 1, 2023

Maricel (HC Pawnshop-Western Union authorized agent) in Bongabong Or. Mdo. Had provided me with a great customer service, showed great patience & understanding. My 1st time to wire money, not only successfully & quickly but also painlessly. (Not quite as smooth at first due to Western Union's system, but Maricel was patient, diligent & assisted me well through the whole process). Thank you Maricel & HC Pawnshop. Mabuhay!

More info
May 20, 2023

In reading the reviews the general feeling is that they don't care, I've done a bit of research on them and there are two things that stick out. Firstly they are just about the only option for cash pickup they virtually have a monopoly, secondly every western union office in overseas countries has a bill paying service as many suppliers gas power etc, only accept payments from the bill service, this is probably more lucrative the the money transfer, business. (Google western union fined) will give you an idea of where their going, there heading back to the 2017 wake up call.

What an absolutely horrible experience. For anybody out there if you do not have to use the money order do not do it. It's an extensive process to try to get your money back if your money order was received or cashed. I always heard stories, but had my own experience, and they should just do away with them in my opinion. Please, just another way they f ck the poor.I give it a negative extremely horrible and never again! Never
