We provide auction estimates which are always significantly lower than private sales values, but can of course as you say be exceeded during the sale.
It is also prudent to start low to attract bidders.

I wished that the reviewer had provided more background information and context. The piece was not particularly valuable from a dollars and cents standpoint. But culturally and historically it came from somewhere or from China and I look to VMS to tell me more. I learned from another expert that foo dogs are actually lions and we just say foo dogs in the west. I would have appreciated a bit more description of how they came to be guardians in China. I just felt the expert was brief because the piece was not so valuable.

This was my second evaluation of an item through ValueMyStuff. This may have been a little trickier since the item in question dates to about the early 19th century.
