thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I sent in around 20-30 items, most of which consisted of J. Crew and Madewell clothing. I got $5 back less the $6.99 for the shipping. There was zero mention of any of those items in their email. Please do not use this service, it's a total scam and I am super mad that I fell for it.

Not happy with my first purchase at ThredUp and very doubtful I will shop there again. I had an online coupon so it made the purchase very reasonable. But I will need to spend money, more than I would like to wear this coat. None of the "issues" was mentioned in the listing description. Unfortunately 4 of the buttons on the coat (it's a double-breasted J Crew wool coat) are broken in half (in other words 1/2 the buttons are "1/2" buttons.) So will need to replace all the buttons unless I can find this exact button (there are 8 buttons altogether). Since I'm not skilled with a needle & thread, I will need to first buy new buttons and second take the coat somewhere to have the old buttons removed and the new one's sewn on. (Cha-Ching!) Also the coat has a few random hairs and lint on it so will need to be professionally dry-cleaned (Cha-Ching, Cha-Ching!) Could have dealt with the dry cleaning if not for the issue with the buttons! Also, it took nearly 14 days to receive the item which just added to my annoyance with ThredUp! The item can be returned at my expense, but you only have 14 days from purchase to do that. Update: As you can see I received a canned reply from Thred-Up, a generic "I'm sorry." What I would like to know is why does Thred-Up require a buyer to pay for return shipping when it's not their fault? It will cost me approximately what I paid for the item to return it. Do not recommend.

Mixed buying experience. Clothes are definitely not laundered, merely shipped out as they came in. One item reeked of perfume. Another was flea ridden. I started getting bites just trying it on. And a spider came crawling out. Items were like new, so happy with that. I would like to stick to my local thrift stores, but they are going out of business in the Bay Area, in part because of lost business to ThredUp. Consignment prices are high. I saw many items for which the used pricing was higher than what you'd find the new on sale for.

SCAM DO NOT USE!
July 13, 2017

Selling to thredup is a SCAM. They determine how much your bag is worth before selling the items and that is all the money you receive. I sent in items and over 20 were accepted. The majority of these items were brand new, never worn and with tags on them. Most items were originally bought for $80 and upwards. I only received 50 dollars for my entire bag. However, they have sold all the items for A SIGNIFICANT amount more and I received none of the profit. They made so much money off my clothes! Moreover, if you disagree with the amount that they are willing to give you for your bag there is absolutely nothing you can do. They make all the money! You make NONE. Trust me you are better off selling to a regular consignment shop even if it is more inconvenient. This company is such a SCAM. I never write reviews but I want people to cognizant of this before they use thredup! I was fooled by this company. The customer help is atrocious as well. I wish I could give the company negative stars.

I sent in a bag of clothing to ThredUp. They accepted 29% of the items I sent -- which I had washed. All the clothing was very lightly used, and the things they accepted were in excellent condition and sold almost immediately. I checked the items that I'd sent that Three Up posted for sale. They grossed $66 -- I grossed less than $6 -- and after being charged $4.99 just to do business with them... I netted 12 cents. What a total ripoff. They also claim to "responsibly recycle" the clothing they don't accept -- unless you pay $15.99 for it to be returned to you. Somehow, I doubt that now. I think they probably made even more of a profit off of me with the items they didn't post for sale on their website.

The director of marketing, Anthony Marino, sent me an email, asking for my honest feedback on my experience. I replied to that email -- and it bounced. So I did a little search and found his real email and re-sent my reply, expressing my disappointment at being ripped off. Never heard back from him.

Avoid selling anything to them.

Thredup used to be my "gurl". Alas, we've broken up. Apparently they actually charge YOU for your clothes now and aren't even willing to pay for returns.

I thought we had a good thing going. I guess I eat wrong.

I sent in a huge bag of like new, name brand clothes. They took 19 of my items and gave me $8.99 then turned around and charged me a shipping and handling fee of $8.99 so I made NOTHING and they are making a profit by selling my clothes! First of all, there is to be no fee for sending in a bag so I will be contacting them about this and will also report them to the BBB.

I gave this one star only because I couldn't give it NO STARS! I sent in a bag of 27 items, many new with tags and the rest in fabulous shape, all in style and name brand. They gave me $20 for 27 items. I'm in SHOCK! Had 4 Lululemon items in there which were in themselves EACH worth more than $20. Again, I am dumbfounded. Didn't have alot of time so thought I'd try sending clothes to them. Knew I wouldn't get what they were worth, BUT NEVER THOUGHT I'd get this screwed. NEVER EVER AGAIN, will I send anything to them for sale. Please believe these reviews, doesn't matter how nice your stuff is, you will get ripped off.

I recently sent in my third bag of clothes, without realizing that during the period between my last and most recent submission, thredUP had totally changed their payout terms. Nobody needs to accept only 5% of the sale value in this day and age. Use ebay or etsy or tradesy and control how much your items sell for (and, consequently, how much you make). Your photos will be 10x better, your descriptions more accurate, and you'll sleep at night. I'm frankly insulted and feel taken advantage of: 23 bucks for 16 items of immaculately cared for, like-new, top brand clothes is despicable. I'll never send items in again. I'll still support re-use and recycling, but on my terms, not these exploitative ones.

I've had good luck purchasing clothing from them. I've actually gotten some really nice things. Although I will say, they do not seem to have as nice of items as they did when I started shopping with them, probably because people send one bag to sell and then never send another after they've been ripped off. That said, buying is fine until you need to return. I sent in a return three weeks and I'm still waiting for my credit. As far as selling to them? DON'T. For starters, the BEST-MOST EXPENSIVE items in your bag? They won't buy. They claim to "donate" them... often times at a later date you will actually see these items for sale on their site. If you are okay sending in 50 like new name brand/designer items and making $10 after you pay their fees, then by all means, send your stuff in. For most people, you will just be upset when you get the measly payout. Save yourself the trouble and donate to a local charity.

Careful this company uses false advertising to draw in customers and then the codes do not give you the discount you expect.

Some of the clothes were delivered damaged and in much worst condition than advertised. The company takes returns but you have to pay for shipping and only have 14 days to get it back. The discount on the used closed was not enough to deal with the poor customer service and returns. The prices are about the same as the clothes on sale or at TJMaxx/Marshall, but these clothes are used and returns are more difficult.

Glad I tried it once but will not be a return customer.

Ordered here with a 40% off of the already low prices. Package came within a few days and EVERY item was individually wrapped. All items ordered fit perfectly! Only 2 pairs of shoes I could tell were worn before (but still in great condition) and the rest of the shoes/clothes I couldn't even tell were second-hand. I can't say anything about selling clothes to this company, but buying from them is TOTALLY worth it. 10/10 would recommend.

Sometimes their msrp are a little inaccurate but with a coupon code it's totally worth their prices. Everything I've ordered has always been in great shape and they ship quickly.

They took some items, high end labels and then "donated" other items without my permission. When I inquired about a tax deduction for the many items of mine they donated, they said that I had to say in advance that I was officially donating them and that I was not entitled to a tax credit as I had listed them for sale. As a retired attorney, I have to say their explanations are bogus. Their offer: they will immediately credit me the $24 for items they purchased from me now instead of my waiting 10 more days. Whoopie, what generous souls they are.

Submitted a bag with some clothes and like-new Jeffrey Campbell booties. Got $1.37 for a bag FULL of clothes and no mention of the shoes. I had used this service in the past and had recommended it to some of my friends. Not anymore and never again.

I sent them two bags of clothing and shoes, they charged me 9.99 per bag, then I got an email stating what I made up front which they deducted the 9.99. To add insult to injury every time they sell one of your items you get an email which says " one of your nice items has sold". What the email should say is WE ARE GOING TO CONTINUE TO RIP YOU OFF AND SEND YOU EMAILS UNTIL ALL YOUR ITEMS HAVE BEEN SOLD. As for the star rating I would like to give them a Negative 5.

Thred up pays pennies on the dollar for the clothing they accept. Once you factor in the charges for shipping & return assurance, you might as well have donated the clothing to a well deserved charity. Did I mention they lost my clothing? I spent hours going through my closet, inspecting clothing (only sent the good stuff), sent them $400 - $500 worth of clothing and made about $20.00. Return assurance? Obviously meaningless. They have no intention of compensating me for my clothing or my time.

I started shopping on Thredup about 7 months a go. I loved the items I purchased- great condition & price! I then began cleaning out my closet & sent in many high end clothing items- the first few bags I sent in the payout was ok, not great but tolerable. But within the past 3-4 months Thredup started charging $9.99 per bag & the payouts were literally nothing- I'm talking like $1.23 for 10 or more New or like New items! Thredup has since lowered the price to submit a bag to $4.99, but that is still ridiculous when you see how much your items end up selling for on their website. I have gone back to donating most of my stuff to the Salvation Army, which is a completely transparent and legitimate organization not out to make millions off your donations.

It used to be free to send in clothes. About 2 months ago I sent in over 20 of my son's high end items. Most were Polos that I checked over very carefully. No stains, no signs of wear, nearly new. All of them. Not only did they take TWO MONTHS to get to my bag, I get an email saying that NONE of them were accepted! THEN... I see that my account balance had gone down. When I write to inquire, they inform me that they CHARGED me $5 to SEND IN OVER 20 EXPENSIVE ITEMS IN GREAT SHAPE! I am so pissed. I could have sold them locally for at least a few dollars a piece which is what I should have done :( LESSON LEARNED! Beware of this SCAM unless you enjoy flushing money down the toilet!
