ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I was a loyal customer-- used to love their products and your returns for store credit. However, now, I am being charged $2 per each item I want to return. I feel like I'm being ripped off. I've shopped here since 2016 and told my friends about it and used to love this company, but their new policies are frustrating to me. I also had several friends tell me they got PENNIES compared to what their items were worth and reading other reviews here make it seem like other sellers are feeling the same. All of this information leads me to believe that they don't care about their customers. I have a bunch of items that are too small for me that I want to return but because they are charging $2 per item, I won't return them, and just want to be done with this company forever. I'd rather keep these too small items instead of paying the restocking fee and having to communicate with this company about getting a refund. So disappointed-- you just lost a customer that's been shopping with you for almost 3 years.
The goody boxes are a cool idea and I wanted to try them but my account ordered two and I only wanted one. I contacted customer service right away and they told me I quote, "we can not delete them". Give it a chance maybe you will like them and if not you have 7 days to return. Come on its Very easy to cancel a order...
Very very disappointed I will be sending back all the clothes and deleting my account.
Its too bad because I really liked the business!
Thank you for your feedback, Michele. Unfortunately, our customer service team does have a limited amount of time to adjust or cancel orders and cannot once a shipment is labeled in the facility or shipped out. If you have concerns about an order, we ask you contact our customer service team as soon as the order goes through. We do value your feedback and will pass it along to our teams.
For awhile now I've bought a good portion of mine and my children's clothes here. Recently it seems that they have gotten greedy though. I generally buy brands like tea collection and Hanna Andersson, and with their last price increase I would pay more here than I ever would with sales directly through these brands, so brand new vs. used. Kinda silly if you ask me, when you're marketing yourself as brand name clothes up to 90% off. Also they keep changing how they run their site, apparently someone new is in charge and needs to change absolutely everything, such as returns now having a restocking fee - bad move I think, and they have something that's supposed to be "green" where you pay less for clothes from the closet warehouse to you. Only in actuality you don't pay less, you simply now pay more for clothes from further away warehouses, and it's not correct, at least for me - it says my closet warehouse is Vernon Hills, IL, which is approximately 2,000 miles away from me, when San Leandro, CA is about a third of that. They obviously know where I live because I've ordered hundreds of packages through them. I will say I DO like the auto buy option for things that are in other people's carts, but otherwise someone needs to get them to chill out for a bit and slow down or they will turn off a lot of customers. Such as myself. Oh, and definitely don't send anything in unless you're cool with literally cents from most items. With how greedy they've gotten recently I wouldn't feel good about just adding to that, would rather donate where someone in need could use it, much "greener" that way too, since you're avoiding shipping stuff somewhere, and while they claim to care about being green and having items repurposed, it's pretty clear to me that they really only care about MONEY, and marketing themselves as caring about the environment probably helps that end goal.
Hi Liz. We appreciate your feedback and we're sorry to know that your recent thredUP experiences have not met expectations. As we continue to test new features and fees on the site, we have the best interests of our customers in mind every step of the way. We'll be passing along your feedback to the appropriate teams and hope you choose to shop and sell with us again down the line.
ORIGINAL POST: At first I thought threadUP was an amazing solution to cloths that I couldn't sell at Crossroads or other boutique consignment shops, boy was I wrong. They send you a clean out bag with pre-paid postage the second you order one but they take over 3 months to process the bags and issue a cash out, which is measly, I got $4.50 total for 5 items. However, the last time that I sent a bag of cloths in they took over 4 months to process it and then they processed the wrong bag! When I contacted their customer service they said they had lost the bag I sent. Don't be a fool and use threadUP, it't just not worth the hassle.
UPDATE: After complaining to their customer service, they gave me $50 cash to replace the bag of cloths I sent in, that they lost. This is totally worth it as I doubt what I sent in would have been a cash out of more than $10. I have changed my mind about threadUP and would use their services again, also it seems like it pays to be a squeaky wheel.
Seller and Buyer beware! SCAM!
I have purchased clothing and sent in clothing to resell through thredup on 2 separate occasions. NEVER AGAIN!
I gave them a second chance after my first experience, believing they were newer and could improve over time. The second experience is worse than the first. I sent in over $500 worth of new shoes, $500 worth of clothing, and 2 brand new bags worth over $300 together. They rejected almost everything, only keeping the lowest end things. For all this, they have offered me $60, and will not return any of the items stating, I didn't choose that option. I was NEVER given that option. Their response, "It is implied by the 'terms and conditions' of using our website."
I would much rather give those items to women in need.
They refuse to return anything I sent in because it "has been processed". There are pictures of it up on their website, so they could certainly go get them and return them to me. WHAT A SCAM! They have hard working women turn in clothes, which they resell at 500% markup from what they give the original owners. Retail has a 100% markup.
Hi Stacy,
We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with our Clean Out program. Items from your former bags have been rejected due to reasons including "unclean/stained, fading, off trend". The Return Assurance feature is not implied. It is clearly offered on the clean out kit order page. There is a box that sellers can either check or uncheck depending on if you wish to apply the feature or not. If this feature is not selected, previous to bag processing, we will not return your rejected items. We hope this information is helpful. Thank you.
I have been trying to get customer support. They don't answer your questions. They are rude. They have no idea what the comnpay does or what the customer needs.
No clue... don't send your things there... they asked me whom I was calling and would not tell me where they worked... Must be a call center.
Still trying to find my things or speak with someone 3 hours later. I think no stars.
Hi Carol,

If you're looking for stylish clothing at an affordable price and don't want to leave your home--This is the right place for you! I was a bit skeptical about buying clothes online since I can't try them on first, but I picked my size, and ordered. Got my order in and it fit me perfectly, and I'm a plus sized lady. I am VERY happy with the pricing and the materials.
This site was great & now they're charging a restocking fee? And they didn't even inform me! I find out thru my account when I went to return some items. Lame! I liked this site for that very reason- I could return items either for store credit for free or pay a shipping fee & get my money back. They're even charging a fee if you received the item damaged! I know some places may charge a restocking fee but never on goods received damaged. And because I know these other companies charge a restocking fee, I don't buy from them. Thred up just sprung this on me. I have 2 of 3 shipments coming of an order. Funny how the first shipment isn't showing the restocking fee but the rest is. I don't even want to get store credit now because they're just gonna nickel & dime me to death with their restocking fee! And yes like others mentioned, don't sell your stuff on here. Not worth it. Sell it on eBay or some other platform. And also yes, why can't they wash items before sending out? Gross! It makes you feel like you shopped at a thrift store while paying department store prices. Thred up, I'm FED UP!
Thanks for the feedback Carisa. Our goal is to give customers access to the widest variety of secondhand pieces at the most affordable prices imaginable. To keep our prices low, we do need to apply certain fees to our services. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way. Any orders placed prior to being alerted about the restocking fee on the item details page and the returns page will not be subject to the restocking fee. Additionally, if you ever receive an item not as described, please reach out to our customer service team as they'll be able to look into it further.
Please don't bother sending in anything of quality unless you would be donating it anyway or are happy with $1. Or so per item. You're better off trying Poshmark or selling at local consignment. The payout is truly shameful and I am not surprised to see a lot of complaints here.
On the other hand, the prices for purchasing are great... but in the Bay Area we have so many high end consignment shops that you are better off going to those instead. So... it's just a no for Thredup from me.
Hi A B. Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with your clean out experience and we have sent you a private message to go over any concerns you may have further.
Nooooo! I loved ThredUp and have been using for two years, but I don't know that it will be worth it for me to continue to use thredup due to the new restocking fee. I usually can only keep about 25% of what I order due to size / things not looking like what I thought they would, and the restocking fee makes it almost not worth it to use the service. That would mean that on some orders my return would be 25 dollars and I would only end up keeping a few items. Might as well go to the store to try newer (albeit cheaper, like H&M) clothes on in person.

I sent in a nice size clean out bag, nice stuff! I got $5 and some odd cents... Will NEVER shop with them or even browse after I spend my whopping $5 bucks! What makes matters worse is what they are charging for my items! You'll NEVER get me again!... reviews I just read on this thread, make me angry I did not read them prior, I usually always do...
Hi Amy,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We are sorry to hear you were unsatisfied with your clean out experience. In the interest of transparency, we offer payout percentages and values directly on the clean out page, for sellers to reference. It’s important to remember that using thredUP means that you may not earn as much as you would if you sold your items peer to peer. But what you may miss in earnings, you earn back in overall convenience. Our goal is to help make our customers’ lives easier by helping them get rid of unwanted items from their closets from the convenience of their own home. While you might be able to earn slightly more by selling elsewhere, thredUP does all of the hard work for you: no driving, no negotiating with buyers, no dealing with rejected items.
It seems like thredup's never been great for sellers... but as a buyer, I was so so happy with thredup for the past year+. Probably half of my everyday wardrobe is from thredup.
But, recently things have taken a bit of a turn:
- Like others have said, the $2 restocking fee makes it make way less sense to order from thredup. Not everything fits, so I end up returning about half of the items that I order for storecredit, which I use on my next order... but spending $2 to return a $15 shirt seems ridiculous. Would make way more sense if you had to keep a certain dollar value from your order, and pay shipping costs if you decided to keep less than that.
- I placed an order a couple of months ago, which was supposed to come in 3 boxes. Two came in a timely manner. The third still hadn't come a month later, with no update. I contacted them, they said "we'll look into it". A week later, still no response. I emailed them again, and they said oh actually, we never put the shipping label on it so it's not coming. They refunded me for the order, but it seems ridiculous to wait a month and a half with no updates from them -- and no sort of compensation for wasting my time.
I may still order from thredup occasionally, because I like their mission of reducing waste, and they do have a lot of reasonably priced decent items... but it doesn't make any sense now to make large frequent purchases, given the restock fee.
Hi Rhia,
Thank you for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear about the delay in communication. Check your inbox for a discount code linked to your account. Enjoy the rest of your day.
At first I thought I'd made a mistake, but after reading all the reviews, I realize it's not me, it's Thredup, listing a few of my items, paying me pennies, and disappearing with the rest without comment. But at least the buying side is great, right? NO. Prices up above what you'd pay new on sale, low end items or poor condition items clogging the site, sizing and descriptions off. And now a RESTOCKING FEE on "free shipping." Forget it. I used to love this site, but now I'll use up my credit and move on.
Hi Sarah,
Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback. We are sorry to hear you were unhappy with your clean out experience. If you ever wish to have a bag review or receive more details you can always reach out to our Customer Service team via [email protected]
Thank you.
Sold some very nice items from brands such as eshakti and downeast basics that were in like-new condition, a huge bag full and my payoff was about $18.00. Really this is just a ripoff. Purchased a coat that was listed as a women's size 14 and the tag inside clearly states that it is a "M"--and I have to pay return shipping for their mistake? Really bad business to deal with. Never again.
Hi Veronica,
Thank you for taking the time to share this information. In the interest of transparency, all payout structures and percentages are included on our website for sellers to reference when sending us their items. If you ever receive an item that is not as described, on the website, you are not responsible for the restocking fee or return shipping. We offer a free return label with refund to store credit. Never hesitate to reach out to Customer Service for further clarification and assistance. Thank you.
I loved shopping on thredup because I could get whatever I wanted and just return the item if it didn't fit or I didn't like it once it arrived. I didn't have to worry about losing money because I'd just return for store credit. But now with this new restocking fee I'm afraid to add any items to my cart unless I'm fairly certain I'll like and keep the item. $2 to restock the item is a lot and will add up when I order 7-10 items per order and return more than half of them. I liked feeling confident I wouldn't lose my money and ordered whatever I wanted. Now I have to be careful of what I add to my cart. Once I use up my credit I will not be returning.
Hello Jackie,
Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback. In order to maintain low prices and continue to offer a huge selection of high-quality secondhand styles, returned items may be subject to a restocking fee. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way.
Our Customer Service team is here to help with any shopping questions you may have before you make your purchase. After all, it's our mission for you to find the perfect pieces for your closet. It would be my pleasure to help you with any questions you may have about items in our shop, so don’t hesitate to ask!
I ORDERED WHAT APPEARED TO BE A BEAUTIFUL DRESS ON THE WEBSITE. IT ARRIVED LIKE IT WAS USED AND ABUSED. THE DRESS CAME WITH AN ACCESSORY THAT WAS FALLING OFF. IT WAS NOTHING LIKE THE PICTURE ON THE WEBSITE. I WANTED TO SPEAK WITH A A CUSTOMER SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE TO SEE IF I COULD RETURN THE ITEM AS IT ARRIVED WHILE I WAS ON MY VACATION OVERSEAS. THERE WAS NO NUMBER TO CALL. THIS IS UPSETTING. I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM THREDUP AGAIN. YOU BET I WILL LET ALL MY COWORKERS, FRIENDS AND FAMILY ABOUT THIS!
Hi Grace,
We understand your concern. You can always contact Customer Service by messaging [email protected] or contacting us during our chat hours, M-F 7 am - 4 pm. If you ever receive an item not as described, we are more than willing to work with you on a resolution. You have options.
Im probably the only one who washes their clothes before they donate them.
I received one Cabi shirt Im great condition and one coat from White House/Black market als in great shape. Both of these items were shipped from the San Leandro, CA location.
My 2nd half of the order shipped from Mechanicsburg, PA. They were older Inc. brand shirts that appeared to be in okay shape. The one, however, reeked of either being kept in the basement or in somebodies multi home. It also had a slight hint of smoke, as in cigarette smoke to it. I washed both of the shirts and the stench still did not come out of this one shirt. Right now I have it outside in the sun hoping the fresh air will help. It may take many washings before the stench is out. Horrible. I dont think Ill ever buy from this company ever again. With their return policy, they make it too complicated.
Hi Nancy,
Thank you for taking the time to leave us this feedback. We are sorry to hear about this. If you ever receive an item not as described, we are more than happy to provide a free return + refund to original method of payment for you. If an item is odorous, we will credit your account for the problematic item. All you have to do is send us a message to [email protected] and our Customer Service team will take care of you.
This is a disgrace. They deducted 10.99 for return assurance when I specially did not select it and confirmed it was not selected when I sent in the bags. They are thieves.
Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for reaching out to us. Our Clean Out service is not a scam. This is not supposed to happen and may be the result of a site glitch. We ask that you reach out to our Customer Service for a courtesy credit to your bag payout. If you prefer, send us a message with your account email and bag ID, and we can resolve this for you. Thanks!
Beware: My first order with thredUP was great - great price, quality item, true to size. 2nd order a women's size 10 blouse was a girls size 10,3rd order women's dress size 12, was size 12 girls or juniors, clearly stated on label - did not return items, don't have time for that, that is why I shop online. Disappointing!
Hi Susie,
Thank you for taking the time to write to us. We are sorry to hear this was your experience. We ask customers to contact our Customer Support team at [email protected] or during our chat hours, M-F 7 am - 4 pm. If you ever receive an item not as described, we will send you a free return label for a full refund to original method of payment.
Not worth it at all. Sent them 8 items including a designer purse which was in excellent condition. My payoff, $3.70. Should have sold on Ebay instead! They really have some racket going!
Hi Gwen. Thank you for your review and we're sorry your clean out did not go as expected. We're happy to review your payout further with you - we have sent you a private message.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
