ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

After sending excellent used Ebay worthy clothes in 2 polka dot bags, I received an average of 30 cents for each item. Totaling a whopping $54 for 60 items. DONATE, GET A RECEIPT, AND TAKE IT OFF YOUR TAXES (U DO NOT NEED TO ITEMIZE!)
When I first found ThredUp a few years ago I sent so many friends and co-workers to them. Now I tell them to stay away if they are considering consigning and warn them about inaccurate descriptions and the new restocking fee if they are thinking of shopping. Processing times are ridiculous and there is zero logic to what they accept. I am to the point where I wonder if the people deciding on bags are making off with items. Just one example: I recently sent BRAND NEW in the BOX Cole Haan sandals in the SUMMER they did not accept? (I wonder where they ended up. I have seen similar items on the site for sale.) There were other new and like new items in the bag of high value that mysteriously didn't make the cut. I should have opted for the return unaccepted items for a fee option. They have also been sending items with such an overwhelming perfume odor that the dry cleaner can't even get it out! So now there is a restocking fee if they send you something unusable? They also don't understand sizing. If an item is Petite Sized, it doesn't say S/P on the label. It specifically says PETITES. Good luck getting anyone from "customer service" to acknowledge this or waive the restocking fee. This business idea is still a good one, but boy, are they ruining it. Wondering how long it will be before someone else figures out how to this right.
Hello there. Thank you for writing this review. Our acceptance standards are based on our inventory supply and demand. Sometimes there is a high quantity of certain items and styles, that will be rejected and marked “off trend”.
We do not guarantee the acceptance of every single item that is sent to us new with tags.
If you ever find that an item is incorrectly listed, please reach out to us and an agent will assist you with resisting the item with the proper details.
Pertaining to the restocking fee, in order to maintain low prices and continue to offer a huge selection of high-quality secondhand styles, returned items may be subject to a restocking fee. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way.
Restocking fees are not applied to items included in orders placed before this feature went into affect (7/17). Fees are also not applied to items not as described. We hope this information is helpful.
Had you asked me what I thought of ThredUp two years ago, I'd have said it's fantastic! Even a year ago I was happy with my experiences, even if there were hiccups in some orders. Now, I plan to use the credit I have then I'll be done with it.
I knew as a seller I wasn't going to get much. I sent in one bag with not much in it to test it out, and I got about what I expected, almost nothing.
As a buyer, I used to love it! I got great deals on items and I got free returns since I always took credit. Now, prices have gone up considerably and are closer to retail than thrift store for non-designer brands. Some things are more expensive than new if the store has a good sale. Then came the restocking fee. If it's truly a mistake on their part they may wave it, but it's a hassle. My final straw is not refunding me what I paid. Even if I deduct the restocking fee from my total return, the amount I got back is almost 10% less than what I paid. I'm sure it'll get resolved, but shopping there now is more work than it's worth. I'm done.
Thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We are happy to offer some clarification.
Prices may be increased or decreased depending on inventory supply and demand.
Item pricing is determined by the cost of production required to process, photograph & list your items for you.

I have sent my last clean-up bag. I have gotten payouts on 10 bags. I have received $961 - which is a good average pay-out - but thredUp has made more than $6000 in sales on my items - more than 500% ROI. Their policies have changed more times in the last 2 years than I can count, but the restocking fee for returned items has me opting out. I will take the $20 or so that I get for my last bag; I'll pay the cashout fee, and I will chalk my break-up with thredUp to just an inequitable relationship where I got fed up with being taken advantage of.
Thank you for leaving a review Polly. As a regular seller, we are assured you are aware of the information provided regarding our payout percentages and potential seller earnings so as to not make sellers feel this way. Item pricing are determined based on the cost of production to list items are sellers and provide convenience in consigning with us. The lase bag I sent in had two pair of Calvin Klein shoes in excellent condition, belts, jewelry and plenty of other items all in near perfect condition which were never listed! Only five items were listed from an extremely full bag! Additionally, items listed in my previous bag were listed as flawed due to fading. HOWEVER, the colors were MUTED, not FADED! Can't they tell the difference? There is no way to contact them to discuss this! VERY FRUSTRATING! Next time I will be recording what goes in to my bag and listing inventory!
Hi Nadine,
We are sorry to hear that your clean out experience did not go as expected. We provide sellers with the information detailing our Clean Out program to ensure they are well informed on our Quality Assurance and Acceptance policy. If you'd like to review this Clean Out further, our customer service team is available via email, chat or the app here: https://bit.ly/2LDlYpw.
My most recent purchase had 2 sweaters with holes. I can understand returning something if it doesn't fit but not when it was misrepresented. I returned the items within 24 hours but for the first time, I did not get reimbursed once the package was scanned at the post office. I will be taking a break from ThredUp after I receive my refund for these items
Hi Nikki,
Thanks for reaching out to us. We are sorry to hear about this. There is no record of any initiated returns containing sweaters from Order #12543433. We offer free return labels for store credit and you and do not charge customers a restocking fee for items not as described. If you need further assistance with a return, please contact our Customer Service team via email, chat or the app here: https://bit.ly/2LDlYpw.
Took two weeks to get the bag. Sent an almost new wool suit and khakis. Received nothing. I would recommend taking your clothes to a real store where you know what you will get before you part with your items.
Thank you for leaving us a review Calvin. Our records indicate that the contents of clean out bag #B2D3D-W37DF were rejected for their category/gender, unclean/stained, & for being shrunken. We offer Return Assurance for sellers to receive their rejected items back for a fee of $9.99. This feature is available upon ordering a clean out kit. If you'd like to review this Clean Out further, our customer service team is available via email, chat or the app here: https://bit.ly/2LDlYpw. Thank you.
They advertise sell your clothes and indicate you get a profit. They take FOREVER to process a bag so your items are out of season. You have to pay the 9.99 bag fee then you only get 5%. Example. I had a winter coat in like new condition. They said retail price was 89.99 and listed for 27.00. It sold. I get 1.35 which is deducted from the 9.99 fee for the bag. I would be better off donating to my local charity.
Thank you for your review Karen. We are sorry to hear that your clean out did not go as expected. Our website and clean out program does not indicate that sellers will profit on items that are sent to us for review. We offer our sellers information regarding our payout structure, to ensure that they are aware of potential earnings.

The $9.99 fee is optional and only deducted when sellers select Return Assurance on a clean out kit. Return Assurance ensures that we return any rejected items back to you. Hope these facts are helpful. Thank you.
I totally understand that this service is based on convienence and there is a price for that, but what they offer as payouts is completely absurd. 15% for high quality designer name brands that they turn around and sell for 600% times what they've paid you? No thanks. I'd rather donate it than line their greedy pockets.
Thank you for your review, Sarah. We are sorry to hear your Clean Out did not go as expected. Prior to sending in a kit, we recommend reviewing our payout structure (https://thredup.helpshift.com/a/thredup/?s=selling&f=how-much-will-i-earn-for-my-clothing&l=en) and payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) to get a better idea of your potential payout. Restocking fees, extra shipping fees for longer distances, and here's what really burns me up: My Clean Out Bag, filled with clothes I sent in to consign, was lost. This is not a big deal; mistakes happen. But! Here's the part that destroys my romance with ThredUp: I could find no way whatsoever on the site to inquire about my lost bag. Nothing. No way to ask, none zero, nada. And so I say: Ptooey to ThredUp. I'll shop local from now on. But I wonder: are these policies a sign that the company is not financially healthy, or just greedy? (to thredup: note that the number of the bag listed below is not correct. The correct number, for the lost bag, is not available to me when I look on your site.)
Hi Laura. Thank you for your review and we are sorry to hear about these frustrations. Our customer service team is available via email, chat or the app, and this information can be found on our FAQ page here: https://bit.ly/2LDlYpw.
Don't sell your clothing, shoes, etc. on this site. They take FOREVER to process your clean out bags and the payoff amounts are absolutely ridiculous! I sent them a $200.00 never used Brahmin bag that they listed for $65.00. My payoff amount was $3.65. How does a beautiful, worn once, Sundance blouse list less then a Faded Glory tee shirt? VERY disappointed and upset. You're better off selling your stuff at a yard sale or EBay.
We appreciate the time you took to leave a review Kelly and we apologize for your unsatisfactory experience. We ask customers review our payout structure (https://thredup.helpshift.com/a/thredup/?s=selling&f=how-much-will-i-earn-for-my-clothing&l=en) and payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) prior to sending in a Clean Out bag to get the best idea of their potential payout. If you'd like to review your payout further, our customer service team is available via email, chat or the app here: https://bit.ly/2LDlYpw.
I used to send everyone I knew to ThredUp, I would place a huge order 4 times a year and I always shopped with the confidence knowing if something didn't fit, I could return it for store credit, a choice I always made. Over the years I even suggested they make the garment measurements known in the description to help reduce returns due to fit. My recent order was great minus a few items that did not fit, even though the measurements in the descriptions of those items should have fit my body according my tape measure. I went to return and noticed a disclaimer about a "restocking fee", something that was not called to my attention when purchasing, when checking out, in the confirmation email or even right on the site. I don't recall any emails about this new policy either. I reached out to ThredUp because I noticed a few customers were writing about not seeing the restocking fee or it being a glitch, and this is the email I received:
Thank you for reaching out to thredUP support.
Previously, restocking fees were only a small test group (2 months ago). On July 17th at 1 pm PDT, this went live for all of our customers, though still in a testing stage. Any item that you have that is under $50.00 will have a $1.99 restocking fee applied to it. If your items are not as described, please reach out to us providing photos of the major discrepancy (we do not include minor measurements as not as described) and we'll be happy to assist you in potentially waiving the restocking fee.
If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us.

So unfortunately, due to inaccuracies in item descriptions, I am forced to keep an item that doesn't fit, or pay additional costs for an error that wasn't my own. At least with other companies, if the sizing is incorrect, I am not penalized for it. This is rather unfortunate considering my happy history with Thredup. I will make sure to tell everyone I had previously gushed to about this company about this shady detail because they sure wont!
Thank you for taking the time to leave your review Ashley - we appreciate your feedback. All orders placed after July 17th, 2018 will have the Restocking Fee applied, but this will also be noted within the item details prior to checking out or adding an item to your cart. We appreciate your feedback, and it will be passed along to our teams.
I ordered my box 8/6 and was charged immediately and still have NO box. I went to my account and it says I've never ordered anything. I've emailed, called and ALWAYS busy, I've tried to chat and cannot reach a real human. Even with HORRIBLE reviews, I wanted to give this a try. I even had 20 people to refer if I liked it. So far, I am not impressed and definitely will NOT refer Thredup to anyone.
I love the variety of brand new with tags Coach Wristlets and handbags. I can finally afford these items for a fraction of the original price. As a result, I have become a regular customer!
I agree that as a seller ThredUp hasn't been great, but its been OK. As a buyer I got some good stuff that I was happy with for good prices. But now, the restocking fee. Its impossible to know if something purchased online will fit, so its essential that you can return items "worry free" as they used to say. I'm fine with the site credit for returns. But since the idea is low prices for second hand stuff, a $2 return fee is too large a proportion per item. I have some credit that I will use up, that that's the end. Too bad.
And please ThredUp, don't write to tell me you have my best interest in mind/heart/wherever. Its nonsense. You are a business out to make money. Don't blame you but find a different way than the restocking fee.
Hi Jennifer - we appreciate your feedback and we are sorry to know that your recent experiences have not gone as expected. We'll be passing along your feedback to our teams as this only betters the experience for all customers.
I work and have 3 kids, I just don't get out to shop for myself and I used to love shopping on ThredUp. I have been with them since 2016 and enjoyed the easy no hassle return policy if I accepted store credit.
**Things have changed. I recently bought a bunch of clothes and now I see that there is a restocking fee EVEN if I accept store credit. As far as I am concerned this isn't worth it. I wish everything I bought online would fit and look wonderful but that isn't always the case. Not everything fits, looks good on me, or is in good condition (stitching torn out in pants hem) and now I have to pay $2 for every item I return. If you really needed to make up the costs of restocking then increase your prices by a $1 to make up for those things that do get returned.
I feel the restocking fee is insulting to people who have been loyal customers and is counter intuitive to buying more clothes. I don't want to buy something if in the back of my mind I know I have to pay money to return it if it doesn't fit.
I wish they went back to the way their old buyer friendly ways. I am done.
Thank you for taking the time to review your thredUP experience Michelle. Our goal is to give customers access to the widest variety of secondhand pieces at the most affordable prices imaginable. To keep our prices low, we do need to apply certain fees to our services. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way. If you ever receive an item not as described, please contact our customer service team who is able to assist further with any concerns you may have.
First of all. I really loved ThredUp. I don't have a lot of consignment stores in my area with the type of clothing I like. I thought ThredUp was great until I decided to send in a Clean Out bag.
They give you barely anything for your items. Even if their brand new pants (worn once) $60 = $2 paid to you (This is before the price reduction for items that haven't sold fast enough). This isn't even worth the time it takes to put it together and bring your bag to the post office. Not only this, but they keep an outdated article that ranks high on search engines about their "30 days return policy", but their return policy is now 14 days. Instead of removing this article they keep it up. I wouldn't doubt they are doing this to mislead customers, because their customer support was anything but helpful when I asked to return items because I was mislead by the article. I ended up with around $80 of items that don't fit me that they will not accept back even after explaining how I was misled. I don't believe they care about sustainability or helping people, it's all about profit. I won't send them any more clean out bags and I'm going to do my best to shop secondhand locally in the future.
Oh and forgot about this... Which is why I'm changing my review to one star from 2 stars. I contacted their support team 3 different ways: mobile app, email, and online chat portal. After waiting multiple days I heard nothing from the mobile app and email. I finally decided to use their web chat and that is the only way they responded.
We appreciate your review Kayla and we are sorry to hear your experience did not meet expectations. Please refer to your account's order return page (https://www.thredup.com/order_returns) for the most updated information about your return deadlines. We value your feedback as this only betters the thredUP experience for all customers.
My frist frustration is the SUPER long response time from customer service. I keep getting auto emails that I need to return by Goody Box by tomorrow, which I had dropped at the post office 4 days ago. Still no response from customer service, and apparently I'm going to be charged tomorrow for all the items that I already sent back.
Every time I send an inquiry to customer service the response time is 4-5 days -- just unacceptable. What is taking so long to respond?
My second complaint is the new restocking fee. Ever since that was instituted I have definitely halted my spending at ThredUp. Definitely not worth it anymore. $2 an item is just insane.
Thank you for your review VT. We do show you spoke with a member of our customer service team on 8/9/2018, we apologize for any delays in following up. Additionally, we appreciate your feedback regarding the Restocking Fee recently initiated. Our goal is to give customers access to the widest variety of secondhand pieces at the most affordable prices imaginable. To keep our prices low, we do need to apply certain fees to our services. While these fees may change over time, we have the best interest of our customers in mind every step of the way.
I had used thredUP in the past as both a buyer and a seller and I was always pleased. I never had an issue with the merchandise I purchased and I felt I received fair pricing for the items I sold. I don't know what has happened to this site, but now as a seller, the prices are ridiculous. I sent in a bag of both clothing and shoes, all in great condition, some with tags, and I received $10.00! They gave me less than $1.00 for blouses in like new condition and then they turn around and post them for $15.99. I will be steering clear of them in the future and instead head to the local consignment store.
Thank you for your review, Julie and we apologize for your frustrations. When an item is accepted into our shop, we discount items anywhere from 70%-90% off their retail price and give the seller a percentage payout based on this resale value. Prior to sending in a clean out kit, we recommend customers review our payout estimator (thredup.com/cleanout/payout-estimator) and our selling FAQ page that outlines our payout structure (https://thredup.helpshift.com/a/thredup/?s=selling&f=how-much-will-i-earn-for-my-clothing&l=en). If you'd like to review your clean out further, you can reach out to our support team via email, chat or the app.
I was very upset with the company after one of my precious Prada bags went missing. Upon further investigation and understanding that I did not receive it back, they instantly credited my account for what the price would have been (and it was a fairly acceptable amount) that I was immediately able to transfer to paypal. I appreciate the quick customer service and revising the problem and doing the right thing for your customers.
Hi Robin. Thank you for reaching out to us. When ordering a Luxe bag, these will have Return Assurance automatically applied. We ask that you reach out to our support team via [email protected] who can look into this Clean Out bag further and assist. You can also review your bag earnings and acceptance on your seller page: https://www.thredup.com/bags. Thank you.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
thredUP.com was designed to be an easy and convenient way to buy and sell secondhand clothing.
