thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. I sent in a lot of expensive pieces, some with tags and I only noticed items missing when they processed my bag. When I inquired they told me their standards were not met. Really... tagged items didn't meet standards? They claimed one of my blouses was sleepwear even though the company doesn't sell sleepwear. They don't even know fashion trends or brand relevance. And when I called them on it they did nothing to resolve it... they just stuck to their first claim. I bet someone there is walking around with a very nice blouse for free.

I've shopped here for many years and sent several bags in for consignment. I realize in order to keep the selling prices low, maybe they're not going to pay out on consigned items as well as other sites, but it's a balance, and until the last year or two, they've managed that balance well.

Now they've changed several policies and even though they still pay pennies on the dollar for items I send in (if they buy them at all), they've also raised their prices, making the sale price not all that different than you can buy new on sale somewhere else. And to add even more bitterness and bite to the user experience, they've added "restocking fees" on returns and premium fees if the item you happen to want to buy comes from a warehouse that isn't your "home warehouse". I recently bought a sweater that was described as "looks brand new", only to discover on delivery that it was heavily discolored and pilling. They asked me to pay a "restock fee" on this item, even though it was their fault they wrote an inaccurate description for the item when I purchased it.

This used to be a great place to shop, but I think I'm done now. I would not be surprised if in the next year or two, many customers will come to the same conclusion and this site will close up shop.

A couple of months ago I discovered thredUP and was really excited. I ordered close to $1500 worth of clothes & shoes. I was able to try new brands that I would not have been able to afford before, but there was a lot of items I had to return for sizing, since I had no clue about sizing for those brands. I just went back to the site to order more clothes and see that there is a $1.99 restocking fee per item returned. There is no way that this will work for me. Sizing varies with each brand and I will have to look else where for my shopping. I am truly disappointed in this new policy.

Better off donating
September 5, 2018

I sent in my bag with over 35 kids clothes. All of which were name brand. All in like new condition and several with tags. I even had. Brand new pair of Birkenstocks with the tags attached. They only excepted 5 things. The ones that they did except weren't even new with tags. I think they are keeping the good stuff for themselves. They are criminals. Never donate your clothes or items to this company.

Very disappointed
September 5, 2018

I too have been a victim of the rip off clean out bag! The last three clean out bags I sent them I was grossly under paid (in credits) for brand new, name brand clothing, shoes, jewellery, and purses. I sent a bag that was so full I could hardly close it and only 14 items were processed for mere pennies? Where did the other items go? ThredUp is my go to for clothes, shoes, purses but I will no longer be sending them any of my clothes and will seriously consider canceling my account. Super bummed I had to write this review!

Definitely a ripoff.
September 5, 2018

I have sent in two clean out bags in the past and was very happy with the turn over and the payout. This time around, I sent in much nicer items (some they said they were always in need of like $90 maternity jeans worn once) and a pair of $120 Vince Camuto heels that I'd only worn in the house once and they accepted only 12 items (not even the shoes) and I received just over $12. Are you kidding me?! I waited over a month for that and I couldn't even receive my items back. I'd never recommend this company and will NEVER buy from or sell to them again.

What?!
September 3, 2018

I have a. 95c credit from a bebe top and a roxy shirt... buuuut after waiting to release my credit to me for 2 weeks (I'm assuming in hopes that you will use your credit to buy something from them), I can't even cash out because the total is under the $1 minimum to either transfer to a paypal account or the pre-paid card. AND if you want them to Paypal you, you pay a 2% fee. This is just wrong.

I used to love Thredup. But the last bag I sent in came back as an insult. $6.65 store credit for a full bag of great items? I am very picky about the things I send in. I only send items with the same quality and brands I would want from consignment. I was surprised when they did not accept a perfect Lululemon tank. Really? It was excellent condition, only worn a couple of times. So I out of curiosity, I went and looked for the same tank and there it was. Now I can't say if it is the one I sent in. But, I would never know would I? They can "say" they didn't accept something and then put it on their site if they wanted to. Or the items they "donate" might get first pick by the employees? I also think they are bumping up the estimated retail price so they can make it look like you are getting a great deal. I'm suspicious. There is no way to know if they are being honest. I sent another bag in last week before I saw how little they paid for the previous bag. If they don't do much better on this one, I am done.

The quality has always been a gamble. The only reason I ever ordered from them was because returns were free, so there was no risk. If something wasn't as described or didn't fit, I could return it for credit. Now, with the "restocking fee" it just isn't worth the risk.

I tried a "goody box" last week, when they promised to include the items in my cart. They included only two of the items I wanted and many of the others they threw in were overpriced garbage. $73 for a pilled sweater? And much of it smelled. (Full disclosure: I did keep one nice item.)

I cleaned out closest and sent all name brands to them, about ten items in total, all in good shape, washed, dry-cleaned, folded. Brands were mostly Chico, one or two Cato and a few other mall brands. Hoping to get about $20 so I can shop some more there... What do I get? $2.65! They accepted three items. My clothes were in better shape then the ones I've gotten off them, I don't get it. I didn't ask for them back as I was cleaning closet but that's ridiculous! Goodwill charges more than that for one non name brand shirt, typically $5.50. I mean since they are getting clothes for almost nothing and they have an over abundance of clothes according to their website why not give bigger in store credits so people can get a shirt or two for a while bag of clothes they sent them. No sweat off their backs. They will give. 45 cents for a Cato's, sell it for at least $7 and I got. 50 cents for a Chico sweater! They will sell that for at least $20! I haven't gotten any Chico on their cheap. I don't get it. B2HWM-3AYWK

I did a recent cleanout of my closet and wanted to get some value out of the higher end items I never wore. I found ThredUP online and decided to send my nicest items for a try. The bag included $90 heels that were never worn, a pair of UGGs worn once and much more. After over a month without hearing anything about the bag I sent in, a few of my items were "accepted". Four out of twelve to be exact. The UGGs weren't in season so they were simply thrown somewhere and I couldn't even get them back. For the four items that were good enough to be accepted, I received $4.75. Total.

INCREDIBLY DISAPPOINTING
September 1, 2018

I sent multiple items with price tags attached; one item was less than a month old. Before I could alter the obscenely low prices ( example 81 dollar pair of jeans, never worn - they tagged for about two bucks) - they said all my items were sold in two days. RIPOFF, RIPOFF, RIPOFF... I WILL NEVER BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM AGAIN - I WILL GIVE EVERYTHING TO GOODWILL FROM NOW ON.

Between their 'new' payout prices - which are pennies to the dollar and returning my items damaged - I will absolutely NOT ever recommend thredUP or send them anything to consign again. I always take photos of my items before I ship them... and I'm not sure what ThredUp did... but the damage is beyond salvaging the shoes. Looks like I'm joining the sentiments of the others who recently posted negative feedback too.

In the past, I have sold to shops like platos closet and usually receive around $3 per item. I had high hopes for ThredUp, but let me tell you, they were crushed. I sent 20 designer/brand name items and received $2. I should have tried to sell them on poshmark instead! It gets worse- the $2 that I received can only be used as a ThredUp store credit or visa gift card, otherwise you are charged a 2% fee to send the money to your bank account. You have to wait 14 days to get the money. I already waited a month after shipping the items to find out how much money I would receive. Do not send your clothes to ThredUp!

I have ordered for years and have gotten many good things. If there ever was a problem with an order, customer service was always good about resolving the issue. This has changed. Two of the items I recently ordered were final sale, but they were definitely not as described. One skirt listed as being 23" long was really only 20", I'm not sure how they could measure so poorly considering it was a pencil skirt and when flat is easy to measure. The other item was a pair of pants listed in extremely good/like new condition. It arrived with two very noticeable ink stains on the front waistband. In the past I was always refunded for mistakes such as this, but not on this order. I was told that in regards to the skirt measurement, they do their best to provide accurate measurements and would not refund anything. It could not be returned because it was a final sale item. So because someone can't tell the difference between a skirt that measures 20" and a skirt that measures 23", I'm out money and a skirt. I only order skirts a certain length or they are too short for me and therefore cannot be worn. For the excellent condition/like new pants I was given a 15% refund. I wanted a full refund because I don't care how much you discount the pants, the ink stains are still there and cannot be worn. How can someone miss obvious ink stains on the front of pants and list them in excellent condition? I'm not happy about the new restocking fee either, so I thought I'd stick with final sale items, but not if you can't trust the measurements or the quality. If a mistake is made on their part, why am I out money? It's just not worth it if your have to gamble with your purchases and customer service does not own up to their mistakes and reimburses you accordingly. I really enjoyed shopping with ThredUp and getting nice clothes and great deals, but without any reassurances that I can trust the descriptions, I'm afraid to place any more orders. I used to tell everyone I could about what great things I'd find from ThredUp and it was becoming almost the only place I purchased clothes, but no more.

Response is ridiculous
August 28, 2018
Updated review

ThredUP's response to my review is ridiculous. You can find clothes from Walmart, Target, Old Navy, and Fashion Bug on there and grandma clothes. Fashion Bug went out of business years ago (unfortunately, it was a great store), but yet the clothes I sent in that are much newer and better brands are "off trend." I have checked the website to see if they accept the brands I am sending in and estimate what I can receive and it's more than I received, even thought the item are new or like new. You think with all the complaints they would see they are making a huge mistake and losing customers, but if they're not going to listen to customers they are going to continue to lose business.

Not worth it anymore
August 26, 2018
Previous review

I used to love this website, but it has gone downhill. They used to have free returns for store credit and now there is a restocking fee of $1.99 if your item is less than $50 (which mine always are, it's thrift store!) I was frequently returning things because you have no idea how they will fit since they are used clothes, sometimes items have shrunk. Also their measurements are totally inaccurate. I used to deal with it though because I had nothing to lose, but not so anymore. It is also taking much longer to receive items and they come in multiple shipments, even for small orders.

I also sent in a bag to sell a couple of years ago and was satisfied with what I received, even though it wasn't a ton of money. I recently sent another bag and was totally ripped off - $0.30 for items that were new, not worn or barely worn, not designer, but nice brands. Other items the same, but not accepted. Brand new bags not accepted. One of my items was incorrectly sized and they eventually fixed it, but I think it caused me to receive less money for it since they put it on consignment. It was a plus size "0" corset top that I knew would sell right away, but they sized it as a standard size 0. I mean clearly, if anyone actually looked at it they would know it was plus size. When it was fixed and put in Plus it instantly sold like I thought. Then I'm seeing that they're now selling items that are "not accepted" under "rejects" whereas they used to give them to charity unless your requested them back. I was fine with my items going to charity because that's what I would have done with them had I not tried to sell them, but now they are still making money off of your stuff and giving you nothing. Sell your clothes yourself and don't bother.

I recently sent my forth bag which included two pairs of Vince cumuto shoes that had been worn once as the heels were too high for me. They were not listed on the accepted items or the consign items, and when I inquired, I received a response after five days that the shoes were stained and therefore donated. This was not the case as I would not send in stained shoes as I consign my high end designer items with another site and they are very picky so I use the same criteria for thred up, as I would rather donate myself if the item will not be accepted.
Previously thred up has been acceptable on the amounts they returned but this last bag is an insult. I will donate and get a receipt from now on... caution if you send items that
May be inviting to the employees who accept the bag... seems they can deem them unacceptable and keep for themselves.

I'm out
August 24, 2018

There are indeed some great finds here, but clothes are a hard thing to buy online, so the hassle of sending things back once you try them on puts you in an unfortunate spot of going ahead and buying something that might not be just right--after all, you've already paid for it. The psychology of this model is great for the business, but not for the shopper. Especially now that the restocking fee has been added. Then you actually are having to PAY to send it back when it didn't work--further getting your shoppy-calculus all working weird. Not to mention seeming pretty unfair. I can send back NEW stuff from other online sites with no "restocking fee," after all. I also think brick and mortar consignment is probably more eco-friendly ultimately, since it's more local and all that shipping isn't going down daily. So yeah: I was in, now I'm out.
