ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

I used to love thredup and was such a loyal seller and customer! It used to be so fun and worth it (even tho the pay outs individually weren't much, if you sold a decent amount of items it would sure add up) but now… they have so many fees by the time they deduct you get like 5$ For multiple (and good items!) IF THAT… sooo not worth it anymore! Sell on your own…. Facebook market or somewhere else that doesn't have all these fees. However if you're just looking to donate old items instead of throwing it away in the trash, this can still be a good option but in that case I'd say just donate it to your local shelter or somewhere it will go directly to people in need since thredup just sells it anyway and you receive no payout. Alsooo customer service is terrible and it's so hard to reach an actual person. Sadly I will no longer be using thredup and I definitely will do not recommend! Also the item descriptions don't always match the items I've gotten items that said on the website "new with tags" but have arrived used and without tags so also beware of that
They pilfer apparel! I sent six enormous boxes, heavy-duty Home Depot boxes, to be exact. I sent brands like Vera Wang, Calvin Klein, H&M, NIKE, Tory Burch, Adidas, Eileen Fisher, COACH, ZARA, ANTHROPOLOGIE, BCBGMaxazria, and Lululemon that were in GREAT CONDITION with TAGS! Just a small number were sold, where are the others? I opened a ticket and their customer service was awful. It took a whole year to process the orders and begin selling! A WHOLE YEAR. Why did those six GIGANTIC BOXES only bring in $62 for me? Whoever it is that's going through those boxes is stealing under their nose. I call THIEVES.
I bought alot there. Now it's way too expensive and too many fees. I tried selling. They say that only a few brands were good enough for them. But I have seen some of the brands I sent on their site. I would not bother is my advice. They have gotten too big for their britches!
We all know an XL in women's is not the same as a junior size. True, I need to gauge the written dimensions, but I missed one (and I really like the shirt). As you can guess, it won't even close in the front.
There is an expectation that if you are shopping for a women's XL, that it is a women's size, even if you don't analyze the bust dimensions. Be careful! This was my first order. I couldn't find a way to contact the company, and of course, because it was on sale, it was a final sale.
I looked at others on the site this evening. Many junior sizes in the women's category.
YES! Like the other reviewer said...They BLATANTLY just STEAL your clothing, and have ZERO Customer Service Skills. I sent some top-notch designer stuff, including a beautiful LEATHER purse. THE ONLY thing that they said that sold was the unused 'FREE" Peleton shoes I never used, and I never saw a dime! It is a complete FARCE run by ENTITLED, SIMPLETON YOUNGSTERS, with ZERO idea WHAT INTEGRITY IS, or sommon sense and manners, for that matter! STAY AWAY!
The fees are outrageous and your cut for your high end clothes is next to pennies. Took months to get them to process two bags. They supposedly didn't sell many of my items which included a pair of Joe's Jeans. Two bags after all the fees made me $2.16
Total robbery. Out of 24 items I sent them (some were two or three pieces sets, they - for whatever stupid reason - separated them as separate items, not sets, and even by separating, they did not list some items of those broken apart sets, although they were new and never worn), they listed about half. I have no idea what happened to the rest of not listed items. In about a month, I started getting emails to claim back unsold items and, of course, pay them now for this service. Out of about 30 separate pieces of clothing I sent them, 6 were in pending sale mode for about another month. The price range for those 6 items payable to me is between 40 cents to one and a half dollar. So, I sent them fully functional, fashionable 30 items, and maybe I will get 3 dollars for that!
But when you search items on their site, they sell them for tens, hundreds and sometimes even thousands of dollars.
They just rob people, for their own profit.
I would never make this mistake again - giving ThredUp my cloth. You can donate them locally, or give away on community sites, and feel good about it, rather then being robbed in this way by ThredUp.
I used to quite a bit of clothes to thredup. I stopped for awhile because it was starting to not be worth it. It had been awhile so I thought I'd try again. Out of 5 bags, I have made more than their 15$ fee on like 3 of them and just barely over 15$. They accepted a lot but the pay out is so so so so low. I've also seen that they won't pay you anything for some mall brands even though they'll happily accept them. Don't even bother honestly. I was trying to make extra money but I'll probably end up having to pay them just to cover the high fees.
Recently they started charging nearly $20 to process a bag. The bags used to be free. You hardly make any money for mid range label clothing like Madewell, Banana Republic, etc. They then take most if not all your earnings in fees. At least you can claim your Goodwill donations on your taxes. You'll get far more money. Thredup started out great but has turned into a money grab site - beware.
Could not get anybody to help me with my order kept saying we were shipping over 7 to 10 days never got it. Luckily my credit card refunded me the money I used to think it's a good company but it's not for me now I won't be using them again for in the future.
They don't even have a product! Their product is what they manage to steal and plunder from your clean out bags. They are the worst! I was a buyer and not too bad experience so I thought I would sell few dozen pieces. Mind you I sent (6) maybe worn couple times name brand childrens winter coats which they sold in the first week of being listed they were in such great shape. Anywhere else I could have easily gotten $200 for those coats! They made the $200 and I got $9.43 for everything. This does not include boys and girls name brand jeans, sweaters, pullovers all totaling about 42 pieces of new or lightly used merchandise. I will NEVER buy or sell from ThredUp again. I keep thinking of ALL others ThredUp has ripped off and every time I look on their merchandise I wonder what poor soul was also ripped off from this company? I cannot in good conscience buy anything else from them knowing their fraudulent business practices! I buy from companies that make me feel good when I purchase something. This is NOT the case with ThredUp I feel cheated and feel sorry for ALL those that have also been through this! WARNING!
In hopes of making a little money back, I send them good quality, never worn items, even with price tags. They show you how much they sell it for the profit ends up being less than 5% of the sale. They have a service fee of $14.99 that gets deducted from your earnings.
The only way to get payout is through paypal. Do not use them if your purpose it to make money. They are only good for donations. I wish I knew this before I sent them my good quality items. You are better off selling your stuff privately.
Sent multiple boxes using the shipping labels provided by ThredUp. They "lost" every single box, I had to fight for a very paltry repayment. They facilitate shipping but then claim that you're still responsible for your clothing until they buy it off you which is nonsense. There is no accountability. I wanted all clothing they rejected returned to me and instead they "lost" all of it. Can only imagine how much they steal if you opt to donate anything they "reject". Absolute trash.
I recently sent a bag in. All gently worn. Some barely worn at all. Met all of the criteria for labels, etc. They only listed half my items, and the cheapest half. They claim the other half didn't meet criteria… yet they can't tell me what was wrong with the pieces. A sweater that retailed for over $300 by a luxury designer that I unfortunately wore a handful of times, somehow didn't meet criteria. Two tops from one of their most popular brands sold, also barely worn, didn't meet criteria. Customer service's only response was I should've paid for the insurance to send it back. And yes, if I knew they were going to scam me out of the better items I sent, well I wouldn't have sent them in at all. Do yourself a favor and try a different platform or your local consignment shop instead.
I mailed them a bunch of new clothing and they only sold one thing. They said the rest of the items was gonna be recycled and I couldn't get it back. The one item they sold, they never paid me. DONT SELL TO THEM!
I've bought many of my clothes via ThredUp and was lucky to find some interesting items at good prices but after my last placed order I think I'm done. I often had to spend some considerable time trying to find what I like, I also had to make sure their measurements were accurate since I already knew some of the brands' sizing, and their description didn't match the usual size. They started to take quite a long time to ship my parcels. I thought I was buying an item in great condition to then find out the garment had some damage. Additionally, they charge a restock fee and many times the shipping costs didn't even match the package's weight and size. It takes a while to get your money back, by the way. I mean, once they get the returned parcel, they notify you and then you have to wait several days until the return is complete and your funds available, meaning that if you find something that you'd like to spend your credit on, you're unable to do so. If you choose to get reimbursed to your original payment, then that's an awful deal because it ends up being more expensive since you'll pay shipping plus restock fee. They sell items that are not returnable due to a big discount but they don't measure them properly. Some items are even sold without providing measurements, that is common to find with their jackets. If it doesn't fit, you'll end up returning.
Oh and I forgot to mention they take pictures of heavily wrinkled garments intended to sell.
Oh. And I forgot. I also requested a clean out closet kit, I shipped good stuff including a new, nice kids' pair of hiking boots but those never showed in the website's search. Only my least nice items appeared available. They probably take the best stuff and sell it somewhere else. Besides, many clothes are not just used but expensive and I know there's good, new stuff that can be found at similar costs.
My fault, ladies, I should've raised my shopping standards loooong ago. But still I'm gonna have to spend some pending credit.
What a rip off. Told shipping free with bag, but still charged. Contacted customer service, but they won't even respond. Designer jeans and I get less than $2. Never again.
This place is a big rip off, people warned me, but I tried it, they make money, you get no6, don't waste your time, what a joke.
After multiple terrible experiences receiving items that were not accurately described or pictured and then being unable to return or reach a human for support or a refund, I am officially over this platform. It's a total scam and they're making a ton of money in returns and shipping alone. Basically flushing money fine the toilet.
I have seen on their website Old Navy, Aeropostale, Maurice's brands so I spent all day cleaning out my closet and washing and drying and nicely folding then putting in their bag. I also have designer brands too. All are good to very good condition. Then I read the fine print for sellers and it says no payout for value brands but to save the planet they will donate. I asked the customer service rep do they take those brands? The person sent a pre written paragraph saying they don't pay out. I asked them so if I send you Old Navy I don't get a pay out but Thred up gets paid? They said "that is not correct" then sent me another pre written paragraph saying they will accept them and list them but I dont get paid. Because they are saving from landfills. The rep was rude and even on my designer items they end up selling for $30 I'd get a 10% payout so I'd get $3. Are they insane? And I have to pay $14.99 for each bag I send to them. I'll check with my local thrift shops and what they don't want I will give to charity. I've bought several hundreds of dollars of clothes from them but Im deleting the app. Sad they are abusing the thought of landfills and saving the planet for their own profit.
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
