thredUP Reviews Summary

ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

This company is a totally fraudulent SCAM. The clean out program? It's shady, it's unethical, it's downright STEALING.

I sent in a few items with their free kit. A BRAND new with tags dress from Coach (listed or like $10?) and a few other items I felt should have been listed for more...

I also sent in a shirt I had bought from Marshalls (I googled it after this whole situation) and they listed the shirt for $300 but were "discounting" it for $50 (it hasn't sold yet but now it's down to $38...)

The whole situation is sketchy. Don't trust them. And save your time. Just donate the clothes or sell on Ebay...

Over the last few years I have sent in a number of bags of clothes and you can track the bags on the app. In the past it has been easy and worked well. But recently all seems to be falling apart. I have sent in bags and I can see they are received in the app and they move to 'processing' but then they just disappear after about 6 months without ever posting for sale. I have emailed so many times inquiring about my missing bags and I can't get a response. I would not send any designer pieces or things you are not willing to lose. They are not responsive and impossible to reach. So it's just a coin toss if you actually get money for your items.

I had a credit in my account because I had been waiting over a year for another clean out bag to be posted. I just went to check and all of my money (credit) was gone. They said in chat that it rolls into a gift card. Complete fraud. I was never contacted that this was even a possibility. They still have not posted had my last clean out bag that I paid to receive from well over a year ago. Do not trust them.

Highway Robbery
March 30, 2024

My ThredUp payout after selling 20+ items -- including quality brands like Ann Taylor, Banana Republic, White Houes Black Market, and J. Crew -- was a whopping $1.56, and it took nearly half a YEAR for them to process these donations. (I won't call them sales, because it's essentially a donation.) You can see in the photos how much money these items were sold for versus how much I received in payout too. What a silly waste of my time and effort. I would have been better off just donating them to a women's shelter or taking them to a local Goodwill so that my donations could have at least helped someone in need rather than someone in greed. How is this business still a business?

The worst
March 28, 2024

My mother died and she had three closets full of clothes. Many still had the tags on them. Never worn. I cleaned out her house and sent many to thread up. Many with tags on them from macys and jcpenney. They accepted 3 items, none with the tags still on them. I thought to myself, someone must have stolen them at threadup. I still have a lot more of her clothes but I will just have to have a rummage sale. This company is an absolute joke in my opinion.

ThredUP is a great way to recycle your clothing but this is NOT a way to make any money! I've sent in four 30lbs boxes of quality clothing that all got listed and sold. After paying the $14.99/box shipping cost I've made a total profit of $60 for all of it. I kept two additional boxes of clothing and decided to post them on Facebook marketplace to see what happened. I've already made $250 and only sold half the clothing so far. Where does all the money go with ThredUP? Definitely not to the person providing the clothing! Font's waste your time, sell it yourself!

I had no idea they would pass out 60% off+ coupons that the seller would have to take the hit for. Wow. Seriously, what a scam.

So very disappointed! Here's my story, long but true.
I've brought my items to consignment shops before, so I'm fully aware of how they work. However, I saved my most expensive items for thredUP, because I actually believed they were a very trusting, reputable, and professional company! Unfortunately, I did not have a good experience at all.
First of all, they claim to have misplaced my coach pocketbook. It was never listed, and when I questioned why, they claimed it was misplaced. If you understand thredUP policy, if they don't list it, they supposedly donated it. You can't get it back unless you pay a fee. That is totally a scam!
Secondly, they didn't list a beautiful expensive Chicos jacket because they claimed it didn't have a size and so this too supposedly was donated when I asked for it back. If they thoroughly checked the jacket as they state they do, they would've seen that it was a reversible jacket and that's why there was no size. I sent about 16 items and they only listed about 8. Out of those eight items that they listed, The payout was extremely low… $1.60, $2.48, etc. only one item had a payout of $10.48. However, ironically it did not sell so they got to keep that item.
Although customer service gave me a payout for my coach pocketbook, they wouldn't do anything about the Chico jacket. And out of the eight items that they listed, only one sold for about and the payout was about $1.04 and I never saw it.
I am so upset that I sent so many valuable items to them, because I believe they ended up keeping most of them for themselves.
It is not worth it to send any items there. Even If they sell what they list, the payout isn't worth it! Drive to your local consignment shop that gives a payout of 50/50 and that you can take home any items they don't list or sell.
This is the honest truth. I I don't want others to have the huge regret I have for trusting them with my most valuable items.

Gone downhill
March 17, 2024

Since when did these idiots charge $3.99 for returns for each item? And then offer a credit instead for less to try to bargain with the crap they sent you? I. Am. Soooooooo. Sick. Of being gipped by everybody. I swear online shopping is absolute trash these days; we are officially seeing how easy customers can be swindled by businesses like Thred up. I have even heard people sending their name brand stuff and only giving them a few dollars, but then reselling it for much higher. I am shocked by how greedy and trashy they've become. I wonder who owns this trashy company.

Scam
March 15, 2024

ThredUP is a scam.
They lost my shipment 1 of 2 boxes, placed my items on sale on their site at 200to 300%. It's retail cost, then when items did not sell I realize I have to buy my merchandise back.

Thought I'd try this place to resell some of my work clothes. They accepted all the pieces (6). Their policy is to give new purchasers a 45% discount, even on items they just received. (I would understand that policy IF the items hadn't sold in, say, a month, but not INSTANTLY!). Five of my items sold. I received a grand total of LESS THAN $12 for my five sold items. Even then, in order to actually get cash, there are service fees, further reducing my payout. I would have been better off donating them, and, in future I will!

Not worth it
March 7, 2024

Sent a number of items, and most sold. By the time they take all their fees and cut, I received a credit of less than $3.00. Will donate my clothes going forward, which is what I had done in the past.

I sent in 4 clean out kits to try this resale service and due to the Thredup charges, all my items sold, but the sales were not enough to cover the service charges - this is actually costing me money. I would get more value from donating the clothing (name brand items) or selling on Facebook marketplace

I have used thredUP in the past and had good results. This last clean out bag I had several items that sold, some brand new with tags. I got several emails from thredUP telling me my payout amount, but my account balance never changed. When I asked about it, I was told that there was a " clean out fee ". That clean out fee was conveniently slightly more than my payout fee. There's another review on here stating " they steal clothes" and I completely agree. Thredup has lost my business. I will no longer sell, buy, or refer anyone to Thredup.

I sent clothes with tags attached or items maybe worn once or twice. Mostly expensive jeans. Most all of my items sold and I made only $12. Would have made more selling on Poshmark or a yardsale even. They only applied as a shopping credit.

I sent in a pretty well rounded bag of items that included Michael kors, Rachel Zoe, Victoria secret, brand new adidas shoes and many more. The payout on most items was 2 dollars or less. I had some items new with tags that never even made listing. HUGELY disappointed and will never use again.

Terrible
February 24, 2024

I have bought numerous times, never had issues this time no package no tracking 20 days pending. Reached out to customer service by email, they said they sent the package without tracking and to let them know with a designated date to respond if not received When I told them I did not receive they swore they sent. I believe they just never sent the package because when I told them I wanted my money they refunded with no package. Be careful.

FIrst and Last Time Buyer
February 23, 2024

I purchased 4 items from Thredup, all classified as "excellent" condition, described as "like new, no signs of wear." -- a very generous analysis. All of the items had that smell often found in second-hand clothing, where someone has used some overwhelming fragrance/fabric softener, etc. That I could live with, but BOTH Eileen Fisher sweaters had a significant number of pulls, pilling, and general wear that I would classify as "Fair" condition. The Fabletics hoodie was faded in spots and pilled under the arms. I would not purchase from them again.
