ThredUp's reputation is marred by significant customer dissatisfaction, particularly regarding the selling process and customer service. Many users report feeling misled about item valuations and processing times, leading to frustration over perceived exploitation and lack of transparency. While some customers appreciate the variety of products available for purchase, issues such as delays in shipping, inadequate communication, and poor handling of returns overshadow these positives. Overall, the sentiment leans heavily towards disappointment, prompting many to recommend alternative selling methods and express reluctance to engage further with the company.

The quality of the products is always top notch. I receive my products quickly and customer service was wonderful. I like that they started donating a portion to local schools, definitely makes me shop with them more. Only downside is shipping, unless I have a free shipping code or free shipping day, I don't like having to spend $70 to get free shipping.
I usually donate my clothes to local organizations, but when I heard about thred UP I thought I'd give it a shot. I sent only 1 bag with a few excellent quality name brand items barely worn: sweaters, tops, and a skirt from Banana Republic, J Crew, and Loft. I was totally shocked when they informed me that they only accepted 1 sweater and would give me $2.48! I would rather donate to charity than support thredUP.
I sent 4 filled-to-the-max bags of clothes to thredUP. Believe me when I say they were of the utmost quality -- the majority of them were brand new with tags. These were boutique brands like Neige, Pink Chicken, and Crew Cuts -- no Old Navy, Carter's or even Gap. (When my daughter was born I had a bit of a clothes-buying habit. Her wardrobe was truly extraordinary, and she never wore even 1/2 of it.) For the first bag, I made $62. All were designated for upfront payment, none for consignment. I thought that was a bit strange bc many of the pieces were in the $100 range but just assumed there must have been issues I missed. Then a couple weeks later I recieved notice that a second bag would payout $20. At this point alarm bells were going off. There was no way the clothes i had sent had come to such a small amount. No way! Today was the final straw... the payout for the third bag? $2. This company has gotten unthinkably unscrupulous. (I sold The same quality of clothing to them years ago and made a full 10x the amount. 10x!) I usually pass along my daughter's clothes to a friend but I was trying to make some Christmas cash. I'm mortified to have been victimized by this company, and completely regret having sent them the clothes. My advice? Sell on eBay or Craig's List; give to a friend; or donate. The tax write off is actually worth more than you will make here, and you'll actually be helping kids in need instead of padding the pockets of these predators. My children's clothes meant something to me; ThredUP trashed that.
If you want to shop here, that's fine. Just understand that your dollars are fattening the wallets of everyone but the trusting person who sent ThredUp the item.
It's my fault. I should have studied the fine print better. But since "Real Simple" magazine recommended this site, I took a flyer on it and literally paid the price.
I took a lot of time to clean and examine the clothing I sent and make sure they were "accepted" brands. I estimated that the total THRIFT STORE value of the items I sent was about $45-$50. On the website, I guessed they'd bring maybe twice that.
My payout on roughly half of the items that were accepted and sold was a whopping $5.50 Then they turned around and sold the stuff for at least 10 times that amount.
I would have done much better with my local consignment store! I will not use this site again. I'd much rather give my clothes to charity. I know ThredUp claims to do that with their rejects, but I'd rather have my clothes go to my local community -- not some Silicon Valley sham/scam.
I was impressed with a no-hassle return since I couldn't really tell if the clothes would fit and needed to return a few. They were nicely packaged and tagged with a printout of what I ordered. I absolutely will buy from them again. I only have one disappointment which was the smell on the clothes but it did come out in the wash.
Thredup is a sham. Here is an example-
The following item is posted on thredup for $8.99 and the compare price is shown as $18
https://www.thredup.com/product/women-vassarette-black-tights/*******
However if you check ebay for the same product (brand new) it is available at $2 only.

Sent 3 bags... received $5.35 for; one was told NOTHING in the entire ball was worth any thing & can't wait to see what the story is on the last one.
T TOTAL SCAM. LETS START A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT. SELLERS EVERYWHERE UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES USE THREDUP.
I just made my second purchase on Thred up - so far it has been a great experience, buying clothing that is like new for a lot less than it would normally cost. I am petite, so I am glad there are petite sizes available. I also only buy clothing that is in excellent condition, eligible for returns, and from well know brands (such as ann taylor, J. Crew, and BR). I do not think I will try selling clothing to Thred up however, due to reviews that describe this as a bad experience.
They continue to say that they donate the clothes that they don't buy to charitable endeavors however, I'm becoming increasingly more concerned that they actually pocket the lower brand clothes that are sellable when people who send them for consignment. Either way next time I'm just using the time and gas and going to Plato's Closet to sell my clothes! :)
I sent three bags of designer clothing to Thread up. They accepted five items from the first bag, including a silk Joie blouse that was brand new and cost $150, an evening dress that was originally $300, and some lululemon items. For five items, I got $35. I got an email saying they accepted nothing from the other two bags. I was shocked because those bags included brand new Frye snake skin boots ($500 retail), coach shoes, and new Kate Spade and Tori Burch clothing among other items. This week, I got an email saying they had made a mistake. The email included 68 links to items. They wanted me to click on every link and note if the item was mine. Apparently, my stuff was mixed in with other people's stuff. Can you imagine how long it took to go to 68 links!?! 13 of the items were mine and I'm still not convinced I didn't miss something. Worse, I'm not convinced they sent links to all of my items they are going to keep. I know everyone thinks they have nice stuff, but seriously, I sent them great stuff. All new, designer, and less than one year old. So, right now, for three giant bags of designer clothing and shoes, I have $35 and a lot of questions/frustrations. Who knows where all my stuff is?
I'd bought a few things from ThredUp and been reasonably pleased with the quality and price. One thing was excellent, the rest were fine for what I paid.
My first consigning experience, though, was horrible. I sent a huge bag stuffed with clothes, most specifically from the list of "acceptable" brands on the website. Most were nice things that I've worn for work. All were clean, no stains, no holes. I received $1 for consigning a long-sleeved t-shirt I bought in Montreal for about $15, and nothing else for any of the things I sent. I also never received an explanation, additional payout, or information about where my things went.
I didn't expect to get rich off consigning, but I had hoped that my brand name clothes that met all of the service's criteria would result in a bit more return, or at some communication about what happened to all of the things I sent.
I won't bother shopping or consigning there again. You probably shouldn't either unless your expectations are very, very low.
These people insulted my things and never gave me any money. I have no idea where all of my good things went. I'm so angry and I don't want any other people to be screwed by these ruthless individuals. They wouldn't send any of my things back, either.
Never, ever send these people ANYTHING!
I sent them two beautiful coats that I bought at Venus, and a really nice pair of fashion boots. All were never worn. And all cost me over $80 a piece.
They only accepted one coat I paid $100 for (again, not worn) and they graciously, after a month, said I earned $2.48. No offer to give me the stuff they didnt want back. Guessing they're going to make some good money off my stuff.
Biggest rip off ever. I wish I had put them in a consignment shop.
Live and learn... but pass on.
I would review their product but I never received it! It's been a month - whats so hard about getting a T-Shirt
I am nervous about my recent effort to consign with Thread up. Most of my items are still in the package and worried that I have made a mistake. I hope someone buys the brand new ECCO tee shirts and enjoys them but I am not expecting much of a payout.
I sold items using thredup and found the process to be easy. I was a little rises disappointed with the amount of money they sent back considering three of the items I sent were brand new with tags. I also received a 40% coupon for sending in my bag but the code did not work/expired very quickly. I tind the prices of most items to be a little high and this without the 40% off coupon I probably will just accept the cash payout and not purchase anything. Seems like a great idea but wasn't truly consignment prices.
They accepted my nearly new items including a very high quality dress for a total of a shocking $4.15. When I asked for the clothes back, their reply was that any item they accept cannot be returned. I could have given them to friends or people in need for FREE and get much more joy than $4.15. I feel completely cheated and I wish I had read the other reviews before I used this site.
Products ok but not overly helpful customer service when I asked them a few questions about sizing pre-purchase they seems kind vague. Think the sizes/fit I got in the end were quite a good bit by luck ratherthan design
Thredup is a total scam. Hey basically stole my items... I would not recommend this service to anyone
The items I received are like new, the prices are fantastic. They arrive in a nice box and I feel good about repurposing items in our throw away world.
Great job!
Answer: Don't bother. I got 80 cents for a whole bag of good condition name brand clothes.
Answer: I've actually emailed their customer service to show them how many negative reviews there were on this site and they did not care at all. They just quoted their policies. I'm sure they will go bankrupt soon enough...
Answer: 1% but they trash the expensive stuff (or am not sure what they do with it) and sell the cheap stuff. So i sent 2 bags with over 20 items, and got total 25$. I had antik batik dress, anthropologie clothes, jcrew, christian lacroix, etc. and they trashed the expensive (new condition) brand and listed cheap things. I will not send them stuff again, it was very hurtful.
Answer: Because they essentially steal your clothes and then sell them for a profit. You get hardly any payout, but they gladly take all your clothes and sell them for a big mark up.
Answer: Of course buyers are satisfied. They are getting other peoples' brand-name, like-new clothes that has been stolen by ThredUp. Buying from ThredUp just supports their dishonest and shady business practice.
Answer: I almost always sell on eBay first. Then when I don't feel like hanging on to the clothes any more and just want my closet space back and they have been on eBay for months, I will send to thredUP. I don't even send in that high end of items and I will usually get $16 and up per bag. So to me, it's a last resort, but I usually can expect something even if it's a little. I LOVE thredUP for buying. Use their upfront calculator to see what items they take. They will say 50 cents to 1.00 per item so it is not hidden info. There is always the return option where you can get your entire bag back for $12.99 as well. Everyone who has nice stuff they'd want back should opt for this method always.
Answer: They sent me an email and put the money on my thred up account so I can buy something. I was do disgusted I gave up on the whole thing
Answer: Because I sent in 575.00 worth of clothes and recieved 8.00 in credit, half of them had tags still on them and were high priced items. When I asked for proof why they did not take them in they said they had stains on them. I asked for pics because they were brand new, they squirted water on them and took a pic. It takes a couple months to even get your credit and when you buy womens clothes, half the time I was sent stained or childrens sized clothes, TWICE is a much better company.
Answer: Honestly this company is not choosing to accept a lot of product that could easily be listed. I have sent bags and bags, including valuable pieces... cashmere sweaters, high end items of considerable retail cost and relatively recently produced. When questioned I am given the response that the items were not in as good a shape as they wanted them to be. That their buyers should be able to buy perfect product. My take on this is... if it's a 200 dollar cashmere sweater and the purchase price is under 10 dollars, a few pills on the fabric should be a non issue! Period. I question what is going on, frankly, as many do. Too much disappears with no explanation, many bags go into complete reject status. I genuinely am concerned that there is a story here and may become apparent after a while. Only time will tell.
Answer: Not worth it unless you have stuff priced over $40 and can get 40%. There percentages are ridiculous for lower priced clothes. You can order return assurance for about $12 but be prepared to get a bag back with your items stuffed in like garbage. They do not even take the time to fold things nicely even though you pay for this service.
